This thesis consists of three self-contained chapters. The first two concern quantum invariants of links and three manifolds and the third contains results on the word problem for link groups.
In chapter 1 we relate the tree part of the Aarhus integral to the mu-invariants of string-links in homology balls thus generalizing results of Habegger and Masbaum.
There is a folklore result in physics saying that the Feynman integration of an exponential is itself an exponential. In chapter 2 we state and prove an exact formulation of this statement in the language which is used in the theory of finite type invariants.
The final chapter is concerned with properties of link groups. In particular we study the relationship between known solutions from small cancellation theory and normal surface theory for the word and conjugacy problems of the groups of (prime) alternating links. We show that two of the algorithms in the literature for solving the word problem, each using one of the two approaches, are the same. Then, by considering small cancellation methods, we give a normal surface solution to the conjugacy problem of these link groups and characterize the conjugacy classes. Finally as an application of the small cancellation properties of link groups we give a new proof that alternating links are non-trivial.
Positive permutation braids on n strings, which are defined to be positive n-braids where each pair of strings crosses at most once, form the elementary but non-trivial building blocks in many studies of conjugacy in the braid groups. We consider conjugacy among these elementary braids which close to knots, and show that those which close to the trivial knot or to the trefoil are all conjugate. All such n-braids with the maximum possible crossing number are also shown to be conjugate. We note that conjugacy of these braids for n<6 depends only on the crossing number. In contrast, we exhibit tw…
Given a knot $K$ inside an integer homology sphere $Y$, the Casson-Lin-Herald invariant can be interpreted as a signed count of conjugacy classes of irreducible representations of the knot complement into $SU(2)$ which map the meridian of the knot to a fixed conjugacy class. It has the interesting feature that it determines the Tristram-Levine signature of the knot associated to the conjugacy class chosen. Turning things around, given a 4-manifold $X$ with the integral homology of $S^{1}\times S^{3}$, and an embedded torus $T$ inside $X$ such that $H_{1}(T;\mathbb{Z})$ surjects onto $H_{1}(X;\…
In this paper we study some consequences of the author's classification of graph manifolds by their profinite fundamental groups. In particular we study commensurability, the behaviour of knots, and relation to mapping classes. We prove that the exteriors of graph knots are distinguished among all 3-manifold groups by their profinite fundamental groups. We also prove a strong conjugacy separability result for certain mapping classes of surfaces.
Based on a recently introduced by the author notion of {\em parity}, in the present paper we construct a sequence of invariants (indexed by natural numbers $m$) of long virtual knots, valued in certain simply-defined group ${\tilde G}_{m}$ (the Cayley graphs of these groups are represented by grids in the $(m+1)$-space); the conjugacy classes of elements of $G_{m}$ play the role of invariants of {\em compact} virtual knots. By construction, all invariants do not change under {\em virtualization}. Factoring the group algebra of the corresponding group by certain polynomial relations leads to fi…
The complete classification of representations of the Trefoil knot group G in S^{3} and SL(2,R), their affine deformations, and some geometric interpretations of the results, are given. Among other results, we also obtain the classification up to conjugacy of the non cyclic groups of affine Euclidean isometries generated by two isometries $μ$ and $ν$ such that $μ^{2}=ν^{3}=1$, in particular those which are crystallographic. We also prove that there are no affine crystallographic groups in the three dimensional Minkowski space which are quotients of G.
We give a classification of irreducible metabelian representations from a knot group into SL(n,C) and GL(n,C). If the homology of the n-fold branched cover of the knot is finite, we show that every irreducible metabelian SL(n,C) representation is conjugate to a unitary representation and that the set of conjugacy classes of such representations is finite. In that case, we give a formula for this number in terms of the Alexander polynomial of the knot. These results are the higher rank generalizations of a result of Nagasato, who recently studied irreducible, metabelian SL(2,C) representations …
We present a new algorithm to solve the conjugacy problem in Artin braid groups, which is faster than the one presented by Birman, Ko and Lee. This algorithm can be applied not only to braid groups, but to all Garside groups (which include finite type Artin groups and torus knot groups among others).
In this article we describe the summit sets in B_3, the smallest element in a summit set and we compute the Hilbert series corresponding to conjugacy classes. The results will be related to Birman-Menesco classification of knots with braid index three or less than three.
We study two sorts of actions on the space of conjugacy classes of irreducible $SU_2$-representations of a knot group. One of them is an involution which comes from the algebraic structure of $SU_2$ and the other is the action by the outer automorphism group of the knot group. In particular, we consider them on an 1-dimensional smooth part of the space, which is canonically oriented and metrized via a Reidemeister torsion volume form. As an application we show that the Reidemeister torsion function on the 1-dimensional subspace has symmetry about the metrization.
We introduce topological invariants of knots and braid conjugacy classes, in the form of differential graded algebras, and present an explicit combinatorial formulation for these invariants. The algebras conjecturally give the relative contact homology of certain Legendrian tori in five-dimensional contact manifolds. We present several computations and derive a relation between the knot invariant and the determinant.
Classical knot theory deals with {\em diagrams} and {\em invariants}. By means of horizontal {\em trisecants}, we construct a new theory of classical braids with invariants valued in {\em pictures}. These pictures are closely related to diagrams of the initial object. The main tool is the notion of {\em free $k$-braid group}. In the simplest case, for free $2$-braids, the word problem and the conjugacy problem can be solved by finding the minimal representative, which can be thought of as a graph, and is unique, as such. We prove a general theorem about invariants of dynamical systems which ar…
We discuss how to apply work of L. Rudolph to braid conjugacy class invariants to obtain potentially effective obstructions to a slice knot being ribbon. We then apply these ideas to a family of braid conjugacy class invariants coming from Khovanov-Lee theory and explain why we do not obtain effective ribbon obstructions in this case.
We describe relations between hyperbolic geometry and codimension two knots or, more exactly, between varieties of conjugacy classes of discrete faithful representations of the fundamental groups of hyperbolic n-manifolds M into $\operatorname{SO}^{\circ} (n+2,1)$ and (n-1)-dimensional knots in the (n+1)-sphere. This approach allows us to discover a phenomenon of non-connectedness of these varieties for closed n-manifolds M, $n\geq 3$, with large enough number of disjoint totally geodesic surfaces, to construct quasisymmetric infinitely compounded "Julia" knots $K\subset S^{n+1}$ which are eve…
We generalize R. Riley's study about parabolic representations of two bridge knot groups to the general knots in $S^3$. We utilize the parabolic quandle method for general knot diagrams and adopt symplectic quandle for better investigation, which gives such representations and their complex volumes explicitly. For any knot diagram with a specified crossing $c$, we define a generalized Riley polynomial $R_c(y) \in \mathbb{Q}[y]$ whose roots correspond to the conjugacy classes of parabolic representations of the knot group. The sign-type of parabolic quandle is newly introduced and we obtain a f…

Knots naturally appear in continuous dynamical systems as flow periodic trajectories. However, discrete dynamical systems are also closely connected with the theory of knots and links. For example, for Pixton diffeomorphisms, the equivalence class of the Hopf knot, which is the orbit space of the unstable saddle separatrix in the manifold $\mathbb{S}^2\times \mathbb{S}^1$, is a complete invariant of the topological conjugacy of the system. In this paper we distinguish a class of three-dimensional Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms for which the complete invariant of topological conjugacy is the equiv…
An ideal triangulation $\mathcal{T}$ of a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with one cusp is non-peripheral if no edge of $\mathcal{T}$ is homotopic to a curve in the boundary torus of $M$. For such a triangulation, the gluing and completeness equations can be solved to recover the hyperbolic structure of $M$. A planar projection of a knot gives four ideal cell decompositions of its complement (minus 2 balls), two of which are ideal triangulations that use 4 (resp., 5) ideal tetrahedra per crossing. Our main result is that these ideal triangulations are non-peripheral for all planar, reduced, alternat…
Let $G$ be a nonabelian, simple group with a nontrivial conjugacy class $C \subseteq G$. Let $K$ be a diagram of an oriented knot in $S^3$, thought of as computational input. We show that for each such $G$ and $C$, the problem of counting homomorphisms $π_1(S^3\setminus K) \to G$ that send meridians of $K$ to $C$ is almost parsimoniously $\mathsf{\#P}$-complete. This work is a sequel to a previous result by the authors that counting homomorphisms from fundamental groups of integer homology 3-spheres to $G$ is almost parsimoniously $\mathsf{\#P}$-complete. Where we previously used mapping class…
We construct cohomology classes in the space of knots by considering a bundle over this space and "integrating along the fiber" classes coming from the cohomology of configuration spaces using a Pontrjagin-Thom construction. The bundle we consider is essentially the one considered by Bott and Taubes, who integrated differential forms along the fiber to get knot invariants. By doing this "integration" homotopy-theoretically, we are able to produce integral cohomology classes. We then show how this integration is compatible with the homology operations on the space of long knots, as studied by B…
Generalized knot groups G_n(K) were introduced first by Wada and Kelly independently. The classical knot group is the first one G_1(K) in this series of finitely presented groups. For each natural number n, G_1(K) is a subgroup of G_n(K) so the generalized knot groups can be thought of as extensions of the classical knot group. For the square knot SK and the granny knot GK, we have an isomorphism $G_1(SK)\cong G_1(GK)$. From the presentations of G_n(SK) and G_n(GK), for n>1, it seems unlikely that G_n(SK) and G_n(GK) would be isomorphic to each other. We are able to show that for many finite g…
We investigate the Reshetikhin--Turaev invariants associated to SU(2) for the 3-manifolds M obtained by doing any rational surgery along the figure 8 knot. In particular, we express these invariants in terms of certain complex double contour integrals. These integral formulae allow us to propose a formula for the leading asymptotics of the invariants in the limit of large quantum level. We analyze this expression using the saddle point method. We construct a certain surjection from the set of stationary points for the relevant phase functions onto the space of conjugacy classes of nonabelian S…
This paper is an exposition of the relationship between Witten's Chern-Simons functional integral and the theory of Vassiliev Invariants of knots and links in three dimensional space. We conceptualize the functional integral in terms of equivalence classes of functionals of gauge fields and we do not use measure theory. This approach makes it possible to discuss the mathematics intrinsic to the functional integral rigorously and without functional integration. Applications to loop quantum gravity are discussed. We thank the organizers of the Conference on 60 Years of Yang-Mills Gauge Field The…

This paper is an exposition of heuristics related to Witten's functional integral, relating it to Vassiliev invariants and to the Kontsevich integrals that can be used to produce Vassiliev invariants of knots and links. In particular, we give a simplified version of the appearance of the Kontsevich integrals in the perturbation expansion of the functional integral.
This work continues the study of a homotopy-theoretic construction of the author inspired by the Bott-Taubes integrals. Bott and Taubes constructed knot invariants by integrating differential forms along the fiber of a bundle over the space of knots. Their techniques were later used by Cattaneo et al. to construct real "Vassiliev-type" cohomology classes in spaces of knots in higher-dimensional Euclidean space. By doing this integration via a Pontrjagin-Thom construction, we constructed cohomology classes in the knot space with arbitrary coefficients. We later showed that a refinement of this …
Several finite complex reflection groups have a braid group which is isomorphic to a torus knot group. The reflection group is obtained from the torus knot group by declaring meridians to have order $k$ for some $k\geq 2$, and meridians are mapped to reflections. We study all possible quotients of torus knot groups obtained by requiring meridians to have finite order. Using the theory of $J$-groups of Achar and Aubert, we show that these groups behave like (in general infinite) complex reflection groups of rank two. The large family of "toric reflection groups" which we obtain includes, among …
We review the Reshetikhin-Turaev approach to construction of non-compact knot invariants involving R-matrices associated with infinite-dimensional representations, primarily those made from Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm. The corresponding formulas can be obtained from modular transformations of conformal blocks as their Kontsevich-Soibelman monodromies and are presented in the form of transcendental integrals, where the main issue is manipulation with integration contours. We discuss possibilities to extract more explicit and handy expressions which can be compared with the ordinary (compact) …
A two-component link produces a torus as the product of the component knots in a two-point configuration space of a three-sphere. This space can be identified with a cotangent bundle and also with an indefinite Grassmannian. We show that the integration of the absolute value of the canonical symplectic form is equal to the area of the torus with respect to the pseudo-Riemannian structure, and that it attains the minimum only at the "best" Hopf links.
In 1999, Rozansky conjectured the existence of a rational presentation of the Kontsevich integral of a knot. Roughly speaking, this rational presentation of the Kontsevich integral would sum formal power series into rational functions with prescribed denominators. Rozansky's conjecture was soon proven by the second author. We begin our paper by reviewing Rozansky's conjecture and the main ideas that lead to its proof. The natural question of extending this conjecture to links leads to the class of boundary links, and a proof of Rozansky's conjecture in this case. A subtle issue is the fact tha…
