Generalized knot groups G_n(K) were introduced first by Wada and Kelly independently. The classical knot group is the first one G_1(K) in this series of finitely presented groups. For each natural number n, G_1(K) is a subgroup of G_n(K) so the generalized knot groups can be thought of as extensions of the classical knot group. For the square knot SK and the granny knot GK, we have an isomorphism $G_1(SK)\cong G_1(GK)$. From the presentations of G_n(SK) and G_n(GK), for n>1, it seems unlikely that G_n(SK) and G_n(GK) would be isomorphic to each other. We are able to show that for many finite groups H, the numbers of homomorphisms from G_n(SK) and G_n(GK) to H, respectively, are the same. Moreover, the numbers of conjugacy classes of homomorphisms from G_n(SK) and G_n(GK) to H, respectively, are also the same. It remains a challenge to us to show, as we would like to conjecture, that G_n(SK) and G_n(GK) are not isomorphic to each other for all n>1.
It is well known that any knot group is torsion-free, but it may admit a generalized torsion element. We show that the knot group of any negative twist knot admits a generalized torsion element. This is a generalization of the same claim for the knot $5_2$, which is the $(-2)$-twist knot, by Naylor and Rolfsen.
In a group, a non-trivial element is called a generalized torsion element if some non-empty finite product of its conjugates equals to the identity. We say that a knot has generalized torsion if its knot group admits such an element. For a (2, 2q+1)-torus knot K, we demonstrate that there are infinitely many unknots c such that p-twisting K about c yields a twist family, which consists of hyperbolic knots with generalized torsion whenever |p| > 3. This gives a new infinite class of hyperbolic knots having generalized torsion. In particular, each class contains knots with arbitrarily high genus…
We show that for many classical knots one can find generalized torsion in the fundamental group of its complement, commonly called the knot group. It follows that such a group is not bi-orderable. Examples include all torus knots, the (hyperbolic) knot $5_2$ and satellites of these knots.
Let $G$ be a group. If an equation $x^n = y^n$ in $G$ implies $x = y$ for any elements $x$ and $y$, then $G$ is called an $R$--group. It is completely understood which knot groups are $R$--groups. Fay and Walls introduced $\bar{R}$--group in which the normalizer and the centralizer of an isolator of $\langle x \rangle$ coincide for any non-trivial element $x$. It is known that $\bar{R}$--groups and $R$--groups share many interesting properties and $\bar{R}$--groups are necessarily $R$--groups. However, in general, the converse does not hold. We will prove that these classes are the same for kn…
Generalized knot groups $G_n(K)$ were introduced independently by Kelly (1991) and Wada (1992). We prove that $G_2(K)$ determines the unoriented knot type and sketch a proof of the same for $G_n(K)$ for $n>2$.
We analyze all monodromies of genus one fibered knots that possess clean or once-unclean arcs, and use this to determine all manifolds containing genus one fibered knots with generalized crossing changes resulting in another genus one fibered knot, and classify all such generalized crossing changes between two genus one, fibered knots.
We show that if K is a satellite knot which admits a generalized cosmetic crossing change of order q with |q| \geq 6, then K admits a pattern knot with a generalized cosmetic crossing change of the same order. As a consequence of this, we find that any prime satellite knot which admits a pattern knot that is fibered cannot admit a generalized cosmetic crossing changes of order q with |q| \geq 6. We also show that if there is any knot admitting a generalized cosmetic crossing change of order q with |q| \geq 6, then there must be such a knot which is hyperbolic.
Several distinct Garside monoids having torus knot groups as groups of fractions are known. For $n,m\geq 2$ two coprime integers, we introduce a new Garside monoid $\mathcal{M}(n,m)$ having as Garside group the $(n,m)$-torus knot group, thereby generalizing to all torus knot groups a construction that we previously gave for the $(n,n+1)$-torus knot group. As a byproduct, we obtain new Garside structures for the braid groups of a few exceptional complex reflection groups of rank two. Analogous Garside structures are also constructed for a few additional braid groups of exceptional complex refle…
In this article, we consider alternating knots on a closed surface in the 3-sphere, and show that these are not parallel to any closed surface disjoint from the prescribed one.
We show that any parabolic generating pair of a genus-one hyperbolic 2-bridge knot group is equivalent to the upper or lower meridian pair. As an application, we obtain a complete classification of the epimorphisms from 2-bridge knot groups to genus-one hyperbolic 2-bridge knot groups.
This article presents a formula for the determinant of the twisted generalized hybrid weaving knot $\hat{Q}_3(m_1,m_2,n,l)$, which is a closed 3-braid. As a corollary, we prove Conjecture 2 of Singh & Chbili [Nuclear Physics B, 980:115800 (2022)].
A classical result of H. S. M. Coxeter asserts that a certain quotient $B(m,n)$ of the braid group $B(m)$ on $m$ strands is finite if and only if $(m,n)$ corresponds to the type of one of the five Platonic solids. If ${\bf k}$ is a knot or virtual knot, one can study similar quotients $G({\bf k}, n)$ for the corresponding knot group. We identify a class of long virtual knots ${\bf k}$ for which $G({\bf k}, n)$ is infinite for $n\ge 2$. The main feature of these long virtual knots is that their Wirtinger complexes are non-positively curved squared complexes.
We consider the relations $\ge$ and $\ge_p$ on the collection of all knots, where $k \ge k'$ (respectively, $k \ge_p k'$) if there exists an epimorphism $πk \to πk'$ of knot groups (respectively, preserving peripheral systems). When $k$ is a torus knot, the relations coincide and $k'$ must also be a torus knot; we determine the knots $k'$ that can occur. If $k$ is a 2-bridge knot and $k \ge_p k'$, then $k'$ is a 2-bridge knot with determinant a proper divisor of the determinant of $k$; only finitely many knots $k'$ are possible.
Previous work of the authors establishes a criterion on the fundamental group of a knot complement that determines when Dehn surgery on the knot will have a fundamental group that is not left-orderable. We provide a refinement of this criterion by introducing the notion of a decayed knot; it is shown that Dehn surgery on decayed knots produces surgery manifolds that have non-left-orderable fundamental group for all sufficiently positive surgeries. As an application, we prove that sufficiently positive cables of decayed knots are always decayed knots. These results mirror properties of L-space …
C Croke and B Kleiner have constructed an example of a CAT(0) group with more than one visual boundary. J Wilson has proven that this same group has uncountably many distinct boundaries. In this article we prove that the knot group of any connected sum of two non-trivial torus knots also has uncountably many distinct CAT(0) boundaries.
For any hyperbolic twist knot in the 3-sphere, we show that the resulting manifold by $r$-surgery on the knot has left-orderable fundamental group if the slope $r$ satisfies the inequality $0\le r \le 4$.
We show that the resulting manifold by $r$-surgery on the knot $5_2$, which is the two-bridge knot corresponding to the rational number 3/7, has left-orderable fundamental group if the slope $r$ satisfies $0\le r\le 4$.
We construct a Kirby diagram of the rational homology ball used in "generalized rational blow-down" developed by Jongil Park. The diagram consists of a dotted circle and a torus knot. The link is simpler, but the parameters are a little complicate. Euclidean Algorithm is used three times in the construction and the proof.
For any hyperbolic genus one 2-bridge knot in the 3-sphere, we show that the resulting manifold by $r$-surgery on the knot has left-orderable fundamental group if the slope $r$ lies in some range which depends on the knot.
Kashaev's invariants for a knot in a three sphere are generalized to invariants of a knot in a three manifold. A relation between the newly constructed invariants and the hyperbolic volume of the knot complement is observed for some knots in lens spaces.
This paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions on a compact, connected, orientable 3-manifold M for it to contain a knot K such that M-K is irreducible and pi_1(M) embeds in pi_1(M-K). This result provides counterexamples to a conjecture of Lopes and Morales and characterizes those orientable 3-manifolds for which it is true.
Given an abelian group $A$ and a Lie group $G$, we construct a bilinear pairing from $A\timesπ_1({\mathcal R})$ to $π_1(G)$, where $\mathcal R$ is a subvariety of the variety of representations $A\to G$. In the case where $A$ is the peripheral subgroup of a torus or two-bridge knot group, $G=S^1$ and $\mathcal R$ is a certain variety of representations arising from suitable SU(2)-representations of the knot group, we show that this pairing is not identically zero. We discuss the consequences of this result for the SU(2)-representations of fundamental groups of manifolds obtained by Dehn surger…
We describe various properties and give several characterizations of ternary groups satisfying two axioms derived from the third Reidemeister move in knot theory. Using special attributes of such ternary groups, such as semi-commutativity, we construct a ternary invariant of curves immersed in compact surfaces, considered up to flat Reidemeister moves.
Let K be a knot of genus g. If K is fibered, then it is well known that the knot group pi(K) splits only over a free group of rank 2g. We show that if K is not fibered, then pi(K) splits over non-free groups of arbitrarily large rank. Furthermore, if K is not fibered, then pi(K) splits over every free group of rank at least 2g. However, pi(K) cannot split over a group of rank less than 2g. The last statement is proved using the recent results of Agol, Przytycki-Wise and Wise.
For a cyclic covering map $(Σ,K) \to (Σ',K')$ between two pairs of a 3-manifold and a knot each, we describe the fundamental group $π_1(Σ\setminus K)$ in terms of $π_1(Σ' \setminus K')$. As a consequence, we give an alternative proof for the fact that certain knots in $S^3$ cannot be represented as the preimage of any knot in a lens space, which is related to free periods of knots. In our proofs, the subgroup of a group $G$ generated by the commutators and the $p$th power of each element of $G$ plays a key role.
In Classical Knot Theory and in the new Theory of Quantum Invariants substantial effort was directed toward the search for unknotting moves on links. We solve, in this note, several classical problems concerning unknotting moves. Our approach uses a new concept, Burnside groups of links, which establishes unexpected relationship between Knot Theory and Group Theory. Our method has the potential to be used in computational biology in the analysis of DNA via tangle embedding theory, as developed by D.W.Sumners.
We present and discuss some open problems formulated by participants of the International Workshop "Knots, Braids, and Auto\-mor\-phism Groups" held in Novosibirsk, 2014. Problems are related to palindromic and commutator widths of groups; properties of Brunnian braids and two-colored braids, corresponding to an amalgamation of groups; extreme properties of hyperbolic 3-orbifold groups, relations between inner and quasi-inner automorphisms of groups; and Staic's construction of symmetric cohomology of groups.
We show that a knot has a non left-orderable surgery if the knot group admits a generalized Baumslag-Solitar relator and satisfies certain conditions on a longitude of the knot. As an application, it is shown that certain positively twisted torus knots admit non left-orderable surgeries.
We study Nielsen equivalence classes of generating pairs of Kleinian groups and HNN-extensions. We establish the following facts: - Hyperbolic 2-bridge knot groups have infinitely many Nielsen classes of generating pairs. - For any natural number N there is a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold whose fundamental group has N distinct Nielsen classes of generating pairs. - Two pairs of elements of a fundamental group of an HNN-extension are Nielsen equivalent iff they are so for the obvious reasons.
In the paper of Yu. A. Mikhalchishina for an arbitrary virtual link $L$ three groups $G_{1,r}(L)$, $r>0$, $G_{2}(L)$ and $G_{3}(L)$ were defined. In the present paper these groups for the virtual trefoil are investigated. The structure of these groups are found out and the fact that some of them are not isomorphic to each other is proved. Also we prove that $G_3$ distinguishes the Kishino knot from the trivial knot. The fact that these groups have the lower central series which does not stabilize on the second term is noted. Hence we have a possibility to study these groups using quotients by …
We consider knots whose diagrams have a high amount of twisting of multiple strands. By encircling twists on multiple strands with unknotted curves, we obtain a link called a generalized augmented link. Dehn filling this link gives the original knot. We classify those generalized augmented links that are Seifert fibered, and give a torus decomposition for those that are toroidal. In particular, we find that each component of the torus decomposition is either "trivial", in some sense, or homeomorphic to the complement of a generalized augmented link. We show this structure persists under high D…
The aim of the present paper is to construct series of invariants of free knots (flat virtual knots, virtual knots) valued in free groups (and also free products of cyclic groups). (Some minor mistakes are corrected)
We use the Bar-Natan Zh-correspondence to identify the generalized Alexander polynomial of a virtual knot with the Alexander polynomial of a two component welded link. We show that the Zh-map is functorial under concordance, and also that Satoh's Tube map (from welded links to ribbon knotted tori in $S^4$) is functorial under concordance. In addition, we extend classical results of Chen, Milnor, and Hillman on the lower central series of link groups to links in thickened surfaces. Our main result is that the generalized Alexander polynomial vanishes on any knot in a thickened surface which is …
Bott, Cattaneo and Rossi defined invariants of long knots $\mathbb R^n \hookrightarrow \mathbb R^{n+2}$ as combinations of configuration space integrals for $n$ odd $\geq 3$. Here, we give a more flexible definition of these invariants. Our definition allows us to interpret these invariants as counts of diagrams. It extends to long knots inside more general $(n+2)$-manifolds, called asymptotic homology $\mathbb R^{n+2}$, and provides invariants of these knots.
The motivation for this work was to construct a nontrivial knot with trivial Jones polynomial. Although that open problem has not yielded, the methods are useful for other problems in the theory of knot polynomials. The subject of the present paper is a generalization of Conway's mutation of knots and links. Instead of flipping a 2-strand tangle, one flips a many-string tangle to produce a generalized mutant. In the presence of rotational symmetry in that tangle, the result is called a "rotant". We show that if a rotant is sufficiently simple, then its Jones polynomial agrees with that of the …
Three new knot invariants are defined using cocycles of the generalized quandle homology theory that was proposed by Andruskiewitsch and Graña. We specialize that theory to the case when there is a group action on the coefficients. First, quandle modules are used to generalize Burau representations and Alexander modules for classical knots. Second, 2-cocycles valued in non-abelian groups are used in a way similar to Hopf algebra invariants of classical knots. These invariants are shown to be of quantum type. Third, cocycles with group actions on coefficient groups are used to define quandle co…
We give an obstruction for genus one knots $K$, $K'$ to have the Gordian distance one by using the $0$th coefficient of the HOMFLT polynomials. As an application, we give a new constraint for genus one knot to admit a (generalized) cosmetic crossing. Combining known results, we prove the (generalized) cosmetic crossing conjecture for genus one pretzel knots.
Let $K,K'$ be two-bridge knots of genus $n,k$ respectively. We show the necessary and sufficient condition of $n$ in terms of $k$ that there exists an epimorphism from the knot group of $K$ onto that of $K'$.
Virtual knots, defined by Kauffman, provide a natural generalization of classical knots. Most invariants of knots extend in a natural way to give invariants of virtual knots. In this paper we study the fundamental groups of virtual knots and observe several new and unexpected phenomena. In the classical setting, if the longitude of a knot is trivial in the knot group then the group is infinite cyclic. We show that for any classical knot group there is a virtual knot with that group and trivial longitude. It is well known that the second homology of a classical knot group is trivial. We provide…
Suppose that there exists an epimorphism from the knot group of a $2$-bridge knot $K$ onto that of another knot $K'$. In this paper, we study the relationship between their crossing numbers $c(K)$ and $c(K')$. Especially it is shown that $c(K)$ is greater than or equal to $3 c(K')$ and we estimate how many knot groups a $2$-bridge knot group maps onto. Moreover, we formulate the generating function which determines the number of $2$-bridge knot groups admitting epimorphisms onto the knot group of a given $2$-bridge knot.
For a knot diagram $K$, the classical knot group $π_1(K)$ is a free group modulo relations determined by Wirtinger-type relations on the classical crossings. The classical knot group is invariant under the Reidemeister moves. In this paper, we define a set of quotient groups associated to a knot diagram $K$. These quotient groups are invariant under the Reidemeister moves and the set includes the extended knot groups defined by Boden et al and Silver and Williams.
Kirchhoff energy is a classical functional on the space of arclength-parameterized framed curves whose critical points approximate configurations of springy elastic rods. We introduce a generalized functional on the space of framed curves of arbitrary parameterization, which model rods with axial stretch or cross-sectional inflation. Our main result gives explicit parameterizations for all periodic critical framed curves for this generalized functional. The main technical tool is a correspondence between the moduli space of shape similarity classes of closed framed curves and an infinite-dimen…
Any knot group is the image of the group of a prime knot by a homomorphism that preserves peripheral structure. In fact, there are infinitely many such prime knots. A related partial order on knots is defined, and its properties are discussed.
We solve the Jones conjecture, which states that the exponent sum in a minimal braid representation of a knot in S^3 is a knot invariant, by proving a generalized version of the original one. We apply contact geometry to study this problem in knot theory.
The group of any nontrivial torus knot, hyperbolic 2-bridge knot, or hyperbolic knot with unknotting number one contains infinitely many elements, none the automorphic image of another, such that each normally generates the group.
We explore algebraic characterizations of 2-knots whose associated knot manifolds fibre over lower-dimensional orbifolds, and consider also some issues related to the groups of higher-dimensional fibred knots.
We study groups of some virtual knots with small number of crossings and prove that there is a virtual knot with long lower central series which, in particular, implies that there is a virtual knot with residually nilpotent group. This gives a possibility to construct invariants of virtual knots using quotients by terms of the lower central series of knot groups. Also, we study decomposition of virtual knot groups as semi direct product and free product with amalgamation. In particular, we prove that the groups of some virtual knots are extensions of finitely generated free groups by infinite …
We study concordance of virtual knots. Our main result is that a classical knot K is virtually slice if and only if it is classically slice. From this we deduce that the concordance group of classical knots embeds into the concordance group of long virtual knots.
