Unexpected connections between Burnside Groups and Knot Theory

In Classical Knot Theory and in the new Theory of Quantum Invariants substantial effort was directed toward the search for unknotting moves on links. We solve, in this note, several classical problems concerning unknotting moves. Our approach uses a new concept, Burnside groups of links, which establishes unexpected relationship between Knot Theory and Group Theory. Our method has the potential to be used in computational biology in the analysis of DNA via tangle embedding theory, as developed by D.W.Sumners.

There are no unexpected tunnel number one knots of genus one

The only knots that are tunnel number one and genus one are those that are already known: 2-bridge knots obtained by plumbing together two unknotted annuli and the satellite examples classified by Eudave-Munoz and by Morimoto-Sakuma. This confirms a conjecture first made by Goda and Teragaito.

Unexpected Essential Surfaces among Exteriors of Twisted Torus Knots

The twisted torus knots K(p, q; r, s) are obtained by performing a sequence of s full twists on r adjacent strands of (p, q)-torus knots. Morimoto asked whether all twisted torus knots with essential tori in the exterior fit into one of two families. We prove that the answer to this question is no, by finding two different new families of toroidal twisted torus knots.

Unexpected local minima in the width complexes for knots

In "Width complexes for knots and 3-manifolds," Jennifer Schultens defines the width complex for a knot in order to understand the different positions a knot can occupy in the 3-sphere and the isotopies between these positions. She poses several questions about these width complexes; in particular, she asks whether the width complex for a knot can have local minima that are not global minima. Virtual Knot Groups

Virtual knots, defined by Kauffman, provide a natural generalization of classical knots. Most invariants of knots extend in a natural way to give invariants of virtual knots. In this paper we study the fundamental groups of virtual knots and observe several new and unexpected phenomena. In the classical setting, if the longitude of a knot is trivial in the knot group then the group is infinite cyclic. Fibered knots and potential counterexamples to the Property 2R and Slice-Ribbon Conjectures

If there are any 2-component counterexamples to the Generalized Property R Conjecture, a least genus component of all such counterexamples cannot be a fibered knot. Furthermore, the monodromy of a fibered component of any such counterexample has unexpected restrictions. One-Term Parity Bracket For Braids

In previous papers, the author realized the following principle for many knot theories: if a knot diagram is complicated enough then it reproduces itself, i.e., is a subdiagram of any other diagram equivalent to it. This principle is realized by diagram-valued invariants [ ] of knots such that [K]=K. Holonomic and Legendrian parametrizations of knots

Let $f:S^1\to R$ be a generic map. We may use $f$ to define a new map $\tilde{f}:S^1\to R^3$ by $\tilde{f}(t) = (-f(t),f'(t),-f''(t))$, and if $f$ is an embedding then the image of $\tilde{f}$ will be a knot. Knots defined by such parametrizations are called holonomic knots. They were introduced in 1997 by Vassiliev, who proved that every knot type can be represented by a holonomic knot. This paper is based on my talks (`Skein modules with a cubic skein relation: properties and speculations' and `Symplectic structure on colorings, Lagrangian tangles and its applications') given in Kyoto (RIMS), September 11 and September 18 respectively, 2001. On the Kronheimer-Mrowka concordance invariant

Kronheimer and Mrowka introduced a new knot invariant, called $s^\sharp$, which is a gauge theoretic analogue of Rasmussen's $s$ invariant. In this article, we compute Kronheimer and Mrowka's invariant for some classes of knots, including algebraic knots and the connected sums of quasi-positive knots with non-trivial right handed torus knots.
