This paper is based on my talks (`Skein modules with a cubic skein relation: properties and speculations' and `Symplectic structure on colorings, Lagrangian tangles and its applications') given in Kyoto (RIMS), September 11 and September 18 respectively, 2001. The first three sections closely follow the talks: starting from elementary moves on links and ending on applications to unknotting number motivated by a skein module deformation of a 3-move. The theory of skein modules is outlined in the problem section of these proceedings.
In the first section we make the point that despite its long history, knot theory has many elementary problems that are still open. We discuss several of them starting from the Nakanishi's 4-move conjecture. In the second section we introduce the idea of Lagrangian tangles and we show how to apply them to elementary moves and to rotors. In the third section we apply (2,2)-moves and a skein module deformation of a 3-move to approximate unknotting numbers of knots. In the fourth section we introduce the Burnside groups of links and use these invariants to resolve several problems stated in section 1.
We reprove and expand results of Bonahon and Wong on central elements of the Kauffman bracket skein modules at root of 1 and on the existence of the Chebyshev homomorphism, using elementary skein methods.
We discuss several open problems in classical Knot Theory and we develop techniques that allow us to study them: Lagrangian tangles, skein modules and Burnside groups.
The theory of welded and extended welded knots is a generalization of classical knot theory. Welded (resp. extended welded) knot diagrams include virtual crossings (resp. virtual crossings and wen marks) and are equivalent under an extended set of Reidemeister-type moves. We present a new class of invariants for welded and extended welded knots and links using a multi-skein relation, following Z. Yang's approach for virtual knots. Using this skein-theoretic approach, we find sufficient conditions on the coefficients to obtain invariance under the extended Reidemeister moves appropriate to weld…
We study the concept of the fourth skein module of 3-manifolds, that is a skein module based on the skein relation b_0L_0 + b_1L_1 + b_2L_2 + b_3L_3 = 0 and a framing relation L^{(1)} = aL, where a, b_0, b_3 are invertible. We introdule the concept of n-algebraic tangles (and links) and analyze the skein module for 3-algebraic links. As a byproduct we prove the Montesinos-Nakanishi 3-move conjecture for 3-algebraic links (including 3-bridge links).
We start a systematic analysis of links up to 5-move equivalence. Our motivation is to develop tools which later can be used to study skein modules based on the skein relation being deformation of a 5-move (in an analogous way as the Kauffman skein module is a deformation of a 2-move, i.e. a crossing change). Our main tools are Jones and Kauffman polynomials and the fundamental group of the 2-fold branch cover of S^3 along a link. We use also the fact that a 5-move is a composition of two rational \pm (2,2)-moves (i.e. \pm 5/2-moves) and rational moves can be analyzed using the group of Fox co…
Diagrams and Reidemeister moves for links in a twisted S^1-bundle over an unorientable surface are introduced. Using these diagrams, we compute the Kauffman Bracket Skein Module (KBSM) of the connected sum of two projective spaces. In particular, we show that it has torsion. We also present a new computation of the KBSM of S^1 x S^2 and the lens spaces L(p,1).
We prove that, in order to derive the HOMFLYPT skein module of the lens spaces $L(p,1)$ from the HOMFLYPT skein module of the solid torus, $\mathcal{S}({\rm ST})$, it suffices to solve an infinite system of equations obtained by imposing on the Lambropoulou invariant $X$ for knots and links in the solid torus, braid band moves that are performed only on the first moving strand of elements in a set $Λ^{aug}$, augmenting the basis $Λ$ of $\mathcal{S}({\rm ST})$.
In this paper we work toward the Homflypt skein module of the lens spaces $L(p,1)$, $\mathcal{S}(L(p,1))$, using braids. In particular, we establish the connection between $\mathcal{S}({\rm ST})$, the Homflypt skein module of the solid torus ST, and $\mathcal{S}(L(p,1))$ and arrive at an infinite system, whose solution corresponds to the computation of $\mathcal{S}(L(p,1))$. We start from the Lambropoulou invariant $X$ for knots and links in ST, the universal analogue of the Homflypt polynomial in ST, and a new basis, $Λ$, of $\mathcal{S}({\rm ST})$ presented in \cite{DL1}. We show that $\math…
Morrison, Walker, and Wedrich used the blob complex to construct a generalization of Khovanov-Rozansky homology to links in the boundary of a 4-manifold. The degree zero part of their theory, called the skein lasagna module, admits an elementary definition in terms of certain diagrams in the 4-manifold. We give a description of the skein lasagna module for 4-manifolds without 1- and 3-handles, and present some explicit calculations for disk bundles over $S^2$.
Khovanov homology is a categorification of the Jones polynomial, so it may be seen as a kind of quantum invariant of knots and links. Although polynomial quantum invariants are deeply involved with Vassiliev (aka. finite type) invariants, the relation remains unclear in case of Khovanov homology. Aiming at it, in this paper, we discuss a categorified version of Vassiliev skein relation on Khovanov homology. More precisely, we will show that the "genus-one" operation gives rise to a crossing change on Khovanov complexes. Invariance under Reidemeister moves turns out, and it enables us to extend…
In this paper we develop a braid theoretic approach for computing the Kauffman bracket skein module of the lens spaces $L(p,q)$, KBSM($L(p,q)$), for $q\neq 0$. For doing this, we introduce a new concept, that of an {\it unoriented braid}. Unoriented braids are obtained from standard braids by ignoring the natural top-to-bottom orientation of the strands. We first define the {\it generalized Temperley-Lieb algebra of type B}, $TL_{1, n}$, which is related to the knot theory of the solid torus ST, and we obtain the universal Kauffman bracket type invariant, $V$, for knots and links in ST, via a …
In this paper we present recent results toward the computation of the HOMFLYPT skein module of the lens spaces $L(p,1)$, $\mathcal{S}\left(L(p,1) \right)$, via braids. Our starting point is the knot theory of the solid torus ST and the Lambropoulou invariant, $X$, for knots and links in ST, the universal analogue of the HOMFLYPT polynomial in ST. The relation between $\mathcal{S}\left(L(p,1) \right)$ and $\mathcal{S}({\rm ST})$ is established in \cite{DLP} and it is shown that in order to compute $\mathcal{S}\left(L(p,1) \right)$, it suffices to solve an infinite system of equations obtained b…
In this paper we present two new bases, $B^{\prime}_{H_2}$ and $\mathcal{B}_{H_2}$, for the Kauffman bracket skein module of the handlebody of genus 2 $H_2$, KBSM($H_2$). We start from the well-known Przytycki-basis of KBSM($H_2$), $B_{H_2}$, and using the technique of parting we present elements in $B_{H_2}$ in open braid form. We define an ordering relation on an augmented set $L$ consisting of monomials of all different "loopings" in $H_2$, that contains the sets $B_{H_2}$, $B^{\prime}_{H_2}$ and $\mathcal{B}_{H_2}$ as proper subsets. Using the Kauffman bracket skein relation we relate $B_{…
In this paper we work toward the HOMFLYPT skein module of $L(p, 1)$, $\mathcal{S}(L(p,1))$, via braids. Our starting point is the linear Turaev-basis, $Λ^{\prime}$, of the HOMFLYPT skein module of the solid torus ST, $\mathcal{S}({\rm ST})$, which can be decomposed as the tensor product of the "positive" ${Λ^{\prime}}^+$ and the "negative" ${Λ^{\prime}}^-$ sub-modules, and the Lambropoulou invariant, $X$, for knots and links in ST, that captures $S({\rm ST})$. It is a well-known result by now that $\mathcal{S}(L(p, 1))=\frac{\mathcal{S}(ST)}{<bbm's>}$, where bbm's (braid band moves) denotes th…
In this survey paper we present results about link diagrams in Seifert manifolds using arrow diagrams, starting with link diagrams in $F\times S^1$ and $N\hat{\times}S^1$, where $F$ is an orientable and $N$ an unorientable surface. Reidemeister moves for such arrow diagrams make the study of link invariants possible. Transitions between arrow diagrams and alternative diagrams are presented. We recall results about %the knot group presentation for lens spaces and the Kauffman bracket and HOMFLYPT skein modules of some Seifert manifolds using arrow diagrams, namely lens spaces, a product of a di…
In this paper we compute the Kauffman bracket skein module of the complement of $(2, 2p+1)$-torus knots, $KBSM(T_{(2, 2p+1)}^c)$, via braids. We start by considering geometric mixed braids in $S^3$, the closure of which are mixed links in $S^3$ that represent links in the complement of $(2, 2p+1)$-torus knots, $T_{(2, 2p+1)}^c$. Using the technique of parting and combing, we obtain algebraic mixed braids, that is, mixed braids that belong to the mixed braid group $B_{2, n}$ and that are followed by their ``coset'' part, that represents $T_{(2, 2p+1)}^c$. In that way we show that links in $T_{(…
Talk 1: Open problems in knot theory that everyone can try to solve. Knot theory is more than two hundred years old; the first scientists who considered knots as mathematical objects were A.Vandermonde (1771) and C.F.Gauss (1794). However, despite the impressive grow of the theory, there are simply formulated but fundamental questions, to which we do not know answers. I will discuss today several such open problems, describing in detail the 20 year old Montesinos-Nakanishi conjecture. Our problems lead to sophisticated mathematical structures (I will describe some of them in tomorrows talks), …
We have two results. First, we give 96 generating sets oriented singular Reidemeister moves; it is an answer to a question by Bataineh, Khaled, Elhamdadi, and Hajij who give a generating set of oriented singular Reidemeister moves using their computation. Second, in the theory of plane curve and Legendrian knots introduced by V. I. Arnold, we select which moves survive as those of Legendrian singular knots and fronts diagrammatically and explicitly.
Two welded (respectively virtual) link diagrams are homotopic if one may be transformed into the other by a sequence of extended Reidemeister moves, classical Reidemeister moves, and self crossing changes. In this paper, we extend Milnor's mu and bar mu invariants to welded and virtual links. We conclude this paper with several examples, and compute the mu invariants using the Magnus expansion and Polyak's skein relation for the mu invariants.
Suppose $K$ is an unknot lying in the 1-skeleton of a triangulated 3-manifold with $t$ tetrahedra. Hass and Lagarias showed there is an upper bound, depending only on $t$, for the minimal number of elementary moves to untangle $K$. We give a simpler proof, utilizing a normal form for surfaces whose boundary is contained in the 1-skeleton of a triangulated 3-manifold. We also obtain a significantly better upper bound of $2^{120t+14}$ and improve the Hass--Lagarias upper bound on the number of Reidemeister moves needed to unknot to $2^{10^5 n}$, where $n$ is the crossing number.
In this paper we give a new basis, $Λ$, for the Homflypt skein module of the solid torus, $\mathcal{S}({\rm ST})$, which was predicted by Jozef Przytycki, using topological interpretation. The basis $Λ$ is different from the basis $Λ^{\prime}$, discovered independently by Hoste--Kidwell \cite{HK} and Turaev \cite{Tu} with the use of diagrammatic methods. For finding the basis $Λ$ we use the generalized Hecke algebra of type B, $\textrm{H}_{1,n}$, defined by the second author in \cite{La2}, which is generated by looping elements and braiding elements and which is isomorphic to the affine Hecke …
Khovanov defined graded homology groups for links L in R^3 and showed that their polynomial Euler characteristic is the Jones polynomial of L. Khovanov's construction does not extend in a straightforward way to links in I-bundles M over surfaces F not D^2 (except for the homology with Z/2 coefficients only). Hence, the goal of this paper is to provide a nontrivial generalization of his method leading to homology invariants of links in M with arbitrary rings of coefficients. After proving the invariance of our homology groups under Reidemeister moves, we show that the polynomial Euler character…
We use elementary skein theory to prove a version of a result of Stylianakis who showed that under mild restrictions on m and n, the normal closure of the m-th power of a half-twist has infinite index in the mapping class group of a sphere with 2n punctures.
We introduce diagrams and Reidemeister moves for links in FxS^{1}, where F is an orientable surface. Using these diagrams we compute (in a new way) the Kauffman Bracket Skein Modules (KBSM) for D^{2}xS^{1} and AxS^{1}, where D^{2} is a disk and A is an annulus. Moreover, we also find the KBSM for the F_{0,3}xS^{1}, where F_{0,3} denotes a disk with two holes, and thus show that the module is free.
We describe an elementary combinatorial move on the set of quadratic differentials with a horizontal one cylinder decom-position. Computer experiment suggests that the corresponding equivalent classes are in one-to-one correspondence with the con-nected component of the strata.
Let $B_n$ denote the classical braid group on $n$ strands and let the {\em mixed braid group} $B_{m,n}$ be the subgroup of $B_{m+n}$ comprising braids for which the first $m$ strands form the identity braid. Let $B_{m,\infty}=\cup_nB_{m,n}$. We will describe explicit algebraic moves on $B_{m,\infty}$ such that equivalence classes under these moves classify oriented links up to isotopy in a link complement or in a closed, connected, oriented 3--manifold. The moves depend on a fixed link representing the manifold in $S^3$. More precisely, for link complements the moves are: the two familiar move…
The Markov Theorem Without Stabilization (MTWS) established the existence of a calculus of braid isotopies that can be used to move between closed braid representatives of a given oriented link type without having to increase the braid index by stabilization. Although the calculus is extensive there are three key isotopies that were identified and analyzed---destabilization, exchange moves and elementary braid preserving flypes. One of the critical open problems left in the wake of the MTWS is the "recognition problem"---determining when a given closed $n$-braid admits a specified move of the …

We develop a calculus of surgery data, called bridged links, which involves besides links also pairs of balls that describe one-handle attachements. As opposed to the usual link calculi of Kirby and others this description uses only elementary, local moves(namely modifications and isolated cancellations), and it is valid also on non-simply connected and disconnected manifolds. In particular, it allows us to give a presentation of a 3-manifold by doing surgery on any other 3-manifold with the same boundary. Bridged link presentations on unions of handlebodies are used to give a Cerf-theoretical…
The stable Andrews-Curtis conjecture in combinatorial group theory is the statement that every balanced presentation of the trivial group can be simplified to the trivial form by elementary moves corresponding to "handle-slides" together with "stabilization" moves. Schoenflies conjecture is the statement that the complement of any smooth embedding S^3 into S^4 are pair of smooth balls. Here we suggest an approach to these problems by certain cork twisting operation on contractible manifolds, and demonstrate it on the example of the first Cappell-Shaneson homotopy sphere.
We define invariants of oriented surface-links by enhancing the biquandle counting invariant using \textit{biquandle modules}, algebraic structures defined in terms of biquandle actions on commutative rings analogous to Alexander biquandles. We show that bead colorings of marked graph diagrams are preserved by Yoshikawa moves and hence define enhancements of the biquandle counting invariant for surface links. We provide examples illustrating the computation of the invariant and demonstrate that these invariants are not determined by the first and second Alexander elementary ideals and characte…
We introduce the theory of strong homotopy types of simplicial complexes. Similarly to classical simple homotopy theory, the strong homotopy types can be described by elementary moves. An elementary move in this setting is called a strong collapse and it is a particular kind of simplicial collapse. The advantage of using strong collapses is the existence and uniqueness of cores and their relationship with the nerves of the complexes. From this theory we derive new results for studying simplicial collapsibility with a different point of view. We analyze vertex-transitive simplicial $G$-actions …
