Kronheimer and Mrowka introduced a new knot invariant, called $s^\sharp$, which is a gauge theoretic analogue of Rasmussen's $s$ invariant. In this article, we compute Kronheimer and Mrowka's invariant for some classes of knots, including algebraic knots and the connected sums of quasi-positive knots with non-trivial right handed torus knots. These computations reveal some unexpected phenomena: we show that $s^\sharp$ does not have to agree with $s$, and that $s^\sharp$ is not additive under connected sums of knots.
Inspired by our computations, we separate the invariant $s^\sharp$ into two new invariants for a knot $K$, $s^\sharp_+(K)$ and $s^\sharp_-(K)$, whose sum is $s^\sharp(K)$. We show that their difference satisfies $0 \leq s^\sharp_+(K) - s^\sharp_-(K) \leq 2$. This difference may be of independent interest.
We also construct two link concordance invariants that generalize $s^\sharp_\pm$, one of which we continue to call $s^\sharp_\pm$, and the other of which we call $s^\sharp_I$. To construct these generalizations, we give a new characterization of $s^\sharp$ using immersed cobordisms rather than embedded cobordisms. We prove some inequalities relating the genus of a cobordism between two links and the invariant $s^\sharp$ of the links. Finally, we compute $s^\sharp_\pm$ and $s^\sharp_I$ for torus links.
We proved that the dimension of the F-vector space J#(G) for a plane trivalent graph G, defined by Kronheimer and Mrowka using their SO(3) instanton Floer homology, is equal to the number of Tait colorings of G.
Kronheimer and Mrowka constructed a variant of Seiberg-Witten invariants for a 4-manifold $X$ with contact boundary in 1997. Using Furuta's finite dimensional approximation, we refine this invariant in the case $H^1(X, \partial X; \mathbb{R})=0$.
Kronheimer and Mrowka recently suggested a possible approach towards a new proof of the four color theorem that does not rely on computer calculations. Their approach is based on a functor $J^\sharp$, which they define using gauge theory, from the category of webs and foams to the category of vector spaces over the field of two elements. They also consider a possible combinatorial replacement $J^\flat$ for $J^\sharp$. Of particular interest is the relationship between the dimension of $J^\flat(K)$ for a web $K$ and the number of Tait colorings $\mathrm{Tait}(K)$ of $K$; these two numbers are k…
We prove that the instanton knot homology KHI(K) as defined by Kronheimer and Mrowka (Knots, sutures and excision, preprint), recovers the Alexander polynomial for knots K in the 3-sphere.
We prove that Khovanov homology detects the trefoils. Our proof incorporates an array of ideas in Floer homology and contact geometry. It uses open books; the contact invariants we defined in the instanton Floer setting; a bypass exact triangle in sutured instanton homology, proven here; and Kronheimer and Mrowka's spectral sequence relating Khovanov homology with singular instanton knot homology. As a byproduct, we also strengthen a result of Kronheimer and Mrowka on $SU(2)$ representations of the knot group.
We show that monopole Floer homology (as defined by Kronheimer and Mrowka) is isomorphic to the S^1-equivariant homology of the Seiberg-Witten Floer spectrum constructed by the second author.
We introduce a Floer homotopy version of the contact invariant introduced by Kronheimer-Mrowka-Ozváth-Szabó. Moreover, we prove a gluing formula relating our invariant with the first author's Bauer-Furuta type invariant, which refines Kronheimer-Mrowka's invariant for 4-manifolds with contact boundary. As an application, we give a constraint for a certain class of symplectic fillings using equivariant KO-cohomology.
We present a large family of knots for which the Rasmussen s-invariants of arbitrary satellites do not detect sliceness. This answers a question of Hedden. The proof hinges on work of Kronheimer-Mrowka and Cochran-Harvey-Horn.
We use grid diagrams to investigate the Ozsvath-Szabo concordance invariant tau, and to prove that |tau(K_1)-tau(K_2)|<=g, whenever there is a genus g knot cobordism joining K_1 to K_2. This leads to an entirely grid diagram-based proof of Kronheimer-Mrowka's theorem, formerly known as the Milnor conjecture.
We define a "real" version of Kronheimer-Mrowka's monopole Floer homology for a 3-manifold equipped with an involution. As a special case, we obtain invariants for links via their double branched covers. The new input is the notion of a real spin-c structure, which consists of a spin-c structure along with a compatible anti-linear involution on the spinor bundle.
We introduce two invariants called sl(3) Khovanov module and pointed sl(3) Khovanov homology for spatial webs (bipartite trivalent graphs). Those invariants are related to Kronheimer-Mrowka's instanton invariants $J^\sharp$ and $I^\sharp$ for spatial webs by two spectral sequences. As an application of the spectral sequences, we prove that sl(3) Khovanov module and pointed sl(3) Khovanov homology both detect the planar theta graph.
We prove that an infinite family of virtually overtwisted tight contact structures discovered by Honda on certain circle bundles over surfaces admit no symplectic semi-fillings. The argument uses results of Mrowka, Ozsvath and Yu on the translation-invariant solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations on cylinders and the non-triviality of the Kronheimer-Mrowka monopole invariants of symplectic fillings.
For any link of two components in an integral homology sphere, we define an instanton Floer homology whose Euler characteristic is the linking number between the components of the link. We relate this Floer homology to the Kronheimer-Mrowka instanton Floer homology of knots. We also show that, for two-component links in the 3-sphere, the Floer homology does not vanish unless the link is split.
We study the representation spaces $R(K;\bf{i})$ as appearing in Kronheimer and Mrowka's framed instanton knot Floer homology, for a class of pretzel knots. In particular, for pretzel knots $P(p,q,r)$ with $p, q, r$ pairwise coprime, these appear to be non-degenerate and comprise representations in SU(2) that are not binary dihedral.
An oriented link L in a 3-sphere S in complex 2-space is a C-boundary if it bounds a piece of algebraic curve in the 4-ball bounded by S. Using Kronheimer and Mrowka's proof of the Thom Conjecture, we construct many oriented knots which are not concordant to a C-boundary. We use the two-variable HOMFLY polynomial to give an obstruction to a knot's being a C-boundary in a strictly pseudoconvex S. We make several conjectures.
Inspired by Kronheimer and Mrowka's approach to monopole Floer homology, we develop a model for $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant symplectic Floer theory using equivariant almost complex structures, which admits a localization map to a twisted version of Floer cohomology in the invariant set. We then present applications to Steenrod operations on Lagrangian Floer cohomology, and to the Heegaard Floer homology of double covers of three-manifolds.
Motivated by a possible connection between the $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ instanton knot Floer homology of Kronheimer and Mrowka and $\mathfrak{sl}(N)$ Khovanov-Rozansky homology, Lobb and Zentner recently introduced a moduli problem associated to colourings of trivalent graphs of the kind considered by Murakami, Ohtsuki and Yamada in their state-sum interpretation of the quantum $\mathfrak{sl}(N)$ knot polynomial. For graphs with two colours, they showed this moduli space can be thought of as a representation variety, and that its Euler characteristic is equal to the $\mathfrak{sl}(N)$ polynomial of th…
We study the Seiberg-Witten invariant $λ_{\rm{SW}} (X)$ of smooth spin $4$-manifolds $X$ with integral homology of $S^1\times S^3$ defined by Mrowka, Ruberman, and Saveliev as a signed count of irreducible monopoles amended by an index-theoretic correction term. We prove a splitting formula for this invariant in terms of the Frøyshov invariant $h(X)$ and a certain Lefschetz number in the reduced monopole Floer homology of Kronheimer and Mrowka. We apply this formula to obstruct existence of metrics of positive scalar curvature on certain 4-manifolds, and to exhibit new classes of integral homo…
The singular instanton Floer homology was defined by Kronheimer and Mrowka in connection with their proof that the Khovanov homology is an unknot detector. We study this theory for knots and two-component links using equivariant gauge theory on their double branched covers. We show that the special generator in the singular instanton Floer homology of a knot is graded by the knot signature mod 4, thereby providing a purely topological way of fixing the absolute grading in the theory. Our approach also results in explicit computations of the generators and gradings of the singular instanton Flo…
Suppose $Σ$ is a compact oriented surface (possibly with boundary) that has genus zero, and L is a link in the interior of $(-1,1)\timesΣ$. We prove that the Asaeda-Przytycki-Sikora (APS) homology of L has rank 2 if and only if L is isotopic to an embedded knot in $\{0\}\timesΣ$. As a consequence, the APS homology detects the unknot in $(-1,1)\timesΣ$. This is the first detection result for generalized Khovanov homology that is valid on an infinite family of manifolds, and it partially solves a conjecture in arxiv:2005.12863. Our proof is different from the previous detection results obtained …
For an oriented link $L \subset S^3 = \Bd\!D^4$, let $χ_s(L)$ be the greatest Euler characteristic $χ(F)$ of an oriented 2-manifold $F$ (without closed components) smoothly embedded in $D^4$ with boundary $L$. A knot $K$ is {\it slice} if $χ_s(K)=1$. Realize $D^4$ in $\C^2$ as $\{(z,w):|z|^2+|w|^2\le1\}$. It has been conjectured that, if $V$ is a nonsingular complex plane curve transverse to $S^3$, then $χ_s(V\cap S^3)=χ(V\cap D^4)$. Kronheimer and Mrowka have proved this conjecture in the case that $V\cap D^4$ is the Milnor fiber of a singularity. I explain how this seemingly special case imp…
Using the theory of perverse sheaves of vanishing cycles, we define a homological invariant of knots in three-manifolds, similar to the three-manifold invariant constructed by Abouzaid and the second author. We use spaces of SL(2,C) flat connections with fixed holonomy around the meridian of the knot. Thus, our invariant is a sheaf-theoretic SL(2,C) analogue of the singular knot instanton homology of Kronheimer and Mrowka. We prove that for two-bridge and torus knots, the SL(2,C) invariant is determined by the l-degree of the $\widehat{A}$-polynomial. However, this is not true in general, as c…
We use the contact invariant defined in [2] to construct a new invariant of Legendrian knots in Kronheimer and Mrowka's monopole knot homology theory (KHM), following a prescription of Stipsicz and Vértesi. Our Legendrian invariant improves upon an earlier Legendrian invariant in KHM defined by the second author in several important respects. Most notably, ours is preserved by negative stabilization. This fact enables us to define a transverse knot invariant in KHM via Legendrian approximation. It also makes our invariant a more likely candidate for the monopole Floer analogue of the "LOSS" in…
There have been a number of constructions of Lagrangian Floer homology invariants for $3$-manifolds defined in terms of symplectic character varieties arising from Heegaard splittings. With the aim of establishing an Atiyah-Floer counterpart of Kronheimer and Mrowka's singular instanton homology, we generalize one of these, due to H. Horton, to produce a Lagrangian Floer invariant of a knot or link $K \subset Y$ in a closed, oriented $3$-manifold, which we call symplectic instanton knot homology ($\mathrm{SIK}$). We use a multi-pointed Heegaard diagram to parametrize the gluing together of a p…
[Original abstract (1992):] The modulus of quasipositivity q(K) of a knot K was introduced as a tool in the knot theory of complex plane curves, and can be applied to Legendrian knot theory in symplectic topology. It has also, however, a straightforward characterization in ordinary knot theory: q(K) is the supremum of the integers f such that the framed knot (K;f) embeds non-trivially on a fiber surface of a positive torus link. Geometric constructions show that -\infty < q(K), calculations with link polynomials that q(K) < \infty. The present paper aims to provide sharper lower bounds (by opt…
We prove an analogue of the Kotschick-Morgan conjecture in the context of SO(3) monopoles, obtaining a formula relating the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds using the SO(3)-monopole cobordism. The main technical difficulty in the SO(3)-monopole program relating the Seiberg-Witten and Donaldson invariants has been to compute intersection pairings on links of strata of reducible SO(3) monopoles, namely the moduli spaces of Seiberg-Witten monopoles lying in lower-level strata of the Uhlenbeck compactification of the moduli space of SO(3) monopoles [arXiv:dg-ga/9710…
