We introduce a method to determine if n-dimensional smooth subvarieties of an ambient space of dimension at most 2n − 2 inherit the Picard group from the ambient space (as it happens when the ambient space is a projective space, according to results of Barth and Larsen). As an application, we give an affirmative answer (up to some mild natural numerical conditions) when the ambient space is a Grassmannian of lines (thus improving results of Barth, Van de Ven and Sommese) or a product of two projective spaces of the same dimension.
In this paper we extend the properties of ordinary points of curves [10] to ordinary closed points of one-dimensional affine reduced schemes and then to ordinary subvarieties of codimension one.
We extend results of our previous papers, on ordinary multiple points of curves, and on the computation of their conductor, to ordinary multiple subvarieties of codimension one.
We investigate a method proposed by E. Arrondo and J. Caravantes to study the Picard group of a smooth low-codimension subvariety X in a variety Y when Y is homogeneous. We prove that this method is strongly related to the signature σ_Y of the Poincare pairing on the middle cohomology of Y. We give under some topological assumptions a bound on the rank of Picard group Pic(X) in terms of σ_Y and remove these assumptions for grassmannians to generalise the main result of E. Arrondo and J. Caravantes.
We prove the following: (a) Let X be a smooth, codimension two subvariety of P6. If X lies on a hyperquintic or if deg(X)<74, then X is a complete intersection. (b) Let X be a smooth, subcanonical threefold in P5. If X lies on a hyperquartic, then X is a complete intersection.
We consider smooth codimension two subcanonical subvarieties in $\mathbb{P}^n$ with $n \geq 5$, lying on a hypersurface of degree $s$ having a linear subspace of multiplicity $(s-2)$. We prove that such varieties are complete intersections. We also give a little improvement to some earlier results on the non existence of rank two vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^4$ with small Chern classes.
We show that for a smooth hypersurface $X\subset \bbP^n$ of degree at least 2, there exist arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) codimension two subvarieties $Y\subset X$ which are not an intersection $X\cap{S}$ for a codimension two subvariety $S\subset\bbP^n$. We also show there exist $Y\subset X$ as above for which the normal bundle sequence for the inclusion $Y\subset X\subset\bbP^n$ does not split.
We prove Bertini type theorems for the inverse image, under a proper morphism, of any Schubert variety in an homogeneous space. Using generalisations of Deligne's trick, we deduce connectedness results for the inverse image of the diagonal in $X^2$ where $X$ is any isotropic grassmannian. We also deduce simple connectedness properties for subvarieties of $X$. Finally we prove transplanting theorems {à} la Barth-Larsen for the Picard group of any isotropic grassmannian of lines and for the Neron-Severi group of some adjoint and coadjoint homogeneous spaces.
We make precise the structure of the first two reduction morphisms associated with codimension two nonsingular subvarieties of quadrics $\Q{n}$, $n\geq 5$. We give a coarse classification of the same class of subvarieties when they are assumed to be not of log-general-type. Keywords: Adjunction Theory, classification, codimension two, conic bundles, low codimension, non log-general-type, quadric, reduction, special variety
Let X\subsetneq\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^{N} be an n-dimensional nondegenerate smooth projective variety containing an m-dimensional subvariety Y. Assume that either m>\frac{n}{2} and X is a complete intersection or that m\geq\frac{N}{2}, we show deg(X)|deg(Y) and codim_{span(Y)}Y\geq codim_{\mathbb{P}^{N}}X, where span(Y) is the linear span of Y. These bounds are sharp. As an application, we classify smooth projective n-dimensional quadratic varieties swept out by m\geq[\frac{n}{2}]+1 dimensional quadrics passing through one point.
Fix integers $a\geq 1$, $b$ and $c$. We prove that for certain projective varieties $V\subset{\bold P}^r$ (e.g. certain possibly singular complete intersections), there are only finitely many components of the Hilbert scheme parametrizing irreducible, smooth, projective, low codimensional subvarieties $X$ of $V$ such that $$ h^0(X,\Cal O_X(aK_X-bH_X)) \leq λd^{ε_1}+c(\sum_{1\leq h < ε_2}p_g(X^{(h)})), $$ where $d$, $K_X$ and $H_X$ denote the degree, the canonical divisor and the general hyperplane section of $X$, $p_g(X^{(h)})$ denotes the geometric genus of the general linear section of $X$ o…
Let $X$ be a codimension two nonsingular subvariety of a nonsingular quadric $\Q{n}$ of dimension $n\geq 5$. We classify such subvarieties when they are scrolls. We also classify them when the degree $d\leq 10$. Both results were known when $n=4$. Keywords: Classification; liaison; low codimension; low degree; quadric; scroll; vector bundle
We prove that there are only finitely many families of codimension two nonsingular subvarieties of quadrics $\Q{n}$ which are not of general type, for $n=5$ and $n\geq 7$. We prove a similar statement also for the case of higher codimension. The case $n=6$ has been recently settled by Fania-Ottaviani. We give examples of infinitely extendable (not as cones) arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay and arithmetically Gorenstein subvarieties of projective spaces and which are not complete intersections. The proof uses the computation of the dimension of the Hilbert scheme of codimension $2$ subschemes of projective spaces due to G. Ellingsrud and of arithmetically Gorenstein codimension $3$ subschemes due to J. O. Kleppe and R.-M. Miró-Roig.
In this paper, we introduce a notion of adjoint ideal sheaves along closed subvarieties of higher codimension and study its local properties using characteristic $p$ methods. When $X$ is a normal Gorenstein closed subvariety of a smooth complex variety $A$, we formulate a restriction property of the adjoint ideal sheaf $\adj_X(A)$ of $A$ along $X$ involving the l.c.i. ideal sheaf $\mathcal{D}_X$ of $X$. The proof relies on a modification of generalized test ideals of Hara and Yoshida.
A general method to express in terms of Gauss sums the number of rational points of subschemes of projective schemes over finite fields is applied to the image of the triple embedding $\mathbb{P}^1\hookrightarrow\mathbb{P}^3$. As a consequence, we obtain a non-trivial description of the value of a Kloosterman-sum-like exponential sum.
We give a new practical method for computing subvarieties of projective hypersurfaces. By computing the periods of a given hypersurface X, we find algebraic cohomology cycles on X. On well picked algebraic cycles, we can then recover the equations of subvarieties of X that realize these cycles. In practice, a bulk of the computations involve transcendental numbers and have to be carried out with floating point numbers. However, if X is defined over algebraic numbers then the coefficients of the equations of subvarieties can be reconstructed as algebraic numbers. A symbolic computation then ver…
We introduce a notion of ampleness for subschemes of higher codimension using the theory of q-ample line bundles. We also investigate certain geometric properties satisfied by ample subvarieties, e.g. the Lefschetz hyperplane theorems and numerical positivity. Using these properties, we also construct a counterexample to the converse of the Andreotti-Grauert vanishing theorem.
We give the first examples of nef line bundles on smooth projective varieties over finite fields which are not semi-ample. More concretely, we find smooth curves on smooth projective surfaces over finite fields such that the normal bundle has degree zero, but no positive multiple of the curve moves in a family of disjoint curves. This answers questions by Keel and Mumford. The proof uses an obstruction theory, in the spirit of homotopy theory, which links the infinitely many obstructions to moving higher and higher multiples of a given codimension-one subvariety. On 3-folds over a finite field…
We study the geometry of a Picard modular fourfold which parametrizes abelian fourfolds of Weil type for the field of cube roots of unity. We find a projective model of this fourfold as a singular, degree ten, hypersurface X in projective 5-space. The Weyl group W(E_6) acts on X and we provide an explicit description of this action. Moreover, we describe various special subvarieties as well as the boundary of X.
We extend an argument of S.Lichtenbaum involving codimension one cycles to higher codimensions and obtain a generalization of the well-known Picard-Brauer exact sequence for a smooth variety X. The resulting exact sequence connects the codimension n Chow group of X with a certain "Brauer-like" group.
We give a classification of embedded smooth projective varieties swept out by rational homogeneous varieties whose Picard number and codimension are one.
We obtain criteria for detecting complete intersections in projective varieties. Motivated by a conjecture of Hartshorne concerning subvarieties of projective spaces, we investigate situations when two-codimensional smooth subvarieties of rational homogeneous varieties are complete intersections.
We generalize the notion of coisotropic hypersurfaces to subvarieties of Grassmannians having arbitrary codimension. To every projective variety X, Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky associate a series of coisotropic hypersurfaces in different Grassmannians. These include the Chow form and the Hurwitz form of X. Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky characterized coisotropic hypersurfaces by a rank one condition on conormal spaces, which we use as the starting point for our generalization. We also study the dual notion of isotropic varieties by imposing rank one conditions on tangent spaces instead…
Let $V$ be a subvariety of codimension $\leq g$ of the moduli space $\cA_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ or of the moduli space $\tM_g$ of curves of compact type of genus $g$. We prove that the set $E_1(V)$ of elements of $V$ which map onto an elliptic curve is analytically dense in $V$. From this we deduce that if $V \subset \cA_g$ is complete, then $V$ has codimension equal to $g$ and the set of elements of $V$ isogenous to a product of $g$ elliptic curves is countable and analytically dense in $V$. We also prove a technical property of the conormal sheaf of $V…
We prove that in characteristic p>0 the locus of stable curves of p-rank at most f is pure of codimension g-f in the moduli space of stable curves. Then we consider the Prym map and analyze it using tautological classes. We study the locus of curves with an etale double cover of p-rank 0 in some detail. In particular, in genus 2 we obtain a formula for the number of such curves. We end with several examples illustrating our formula.
In this paper we investigate codimension one Fano distributions on Fano manifolds with Picard number one. We classify Fano distributions of maximal index on complete intersections in weighted projective spaces, Fano contact manifolds, Grassmannians of lines and their linear sections, and describe their moduli spaces. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of codimension one del Pezzo distributions on Fano manifolds with Picard number one.
For $Y \subset X$ a locally complete intersection of codimension p, Spencer Bloch [2] constructed the semi-regularity map $π: H^{1}(\mathcal{N}_{Y/X}) \to H^{p+1}(Ω_{X/k}^{p-1})$. As an analogue, we construct a map $\tildeπ: H^{1}(\mathcal{N}_{Y/X}) \to H^{p+1}(Ω_{X/\mathbb{Q}}^{p-1})$, without assuming local complete intersections. While the semi-regularity map $π$ is expected to be injective, we show $\tildeπ$ is a zero map. We use this zero map to interpret how to eliminate obstructions to deforming cycles, an idea by Mark Green and Phillip Griffiths in [9].
We construct a new 20-dimensional family of projective 6-dimensional irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds. The elements of this family are deformation equivalent with the Hilbert scheme of three points on a K3 surface and are constructed as natural double covers of special codimension 3 subvarieties of the Grassmanian G(3,6). These codimension 3 subvarieties are defined as Lagrangian degeneracy loci and their construction is parallel to that of EPW sextics, we call them the EPW cubes. As a consequence we prove that the moduli space of polarized IHS sixfolds of K3-type, Beauville-Bogomo…
The Picard number of a Fano manifold X obtained by blowing up a curve in a smooth projective variety is known to be at most 5, in any dimension greater than or equal to 4. We show that the Picard number attains to the maximal if and only if X is the blow-up of the projective space whose center consists of two points, the strict transform of the line joining them and a linear subspace or a quadric of codimension 2. This result is obtained as a consequence of a classification of special types of Fano manifolds.
In this article we develop a new way of systematically constructing infinitely many families of smooth subvarieties $X$ of any given dimension $m$, $m \geq 3$, and any given codimension in $\mathbb P^N$, embedded by complete subcanonical linear series, and, in particular, in the range of Hartshorne's conjecture. We accomplish this by showing the existence of everywhere non--reduced schemes called ropes, embedded in $\mathbb P^N$, and by smoothing them. In the range $3 \leq m < N/2$, we construct smooth subvarieties, embedded by complete subcanonical linear series, that are not complete interse…
Smooth complex polarized varieties $(X,L)$ with a vector subspace $V \subseteq H^0(X,L)$ spanning $L$ are classified under the assumption that the locus ${\Cal D}(X,V)$ of singular elements of $|V|$ has codimension equal to $\dim(X)-i$, $i=3,4,5$, the last case under the additional assumption that $X$ has Picard number one. In fact it is proven that this codimension cannot be $\dim(X)-4$ while it is $\dim(X)-3$ if and only if $(X,L)$ is a scroll over a smooth curve. When the codimension is $\dim(X)-5$ and the Picard number is one only the Plücker embedding of the Grassmannian of lines in $\Bbb…
In this paper, we study rational sections of the relative Picard variety of a linear system on a smooth projective variety. Specifically, we prove that if the linear system is basepoint-free and the locus of non-integral divisors has codimension at least two, then all rational sections of the relative Picard variety come from restrictions of line bundles on the variety.
We construct a family of examples of Legendrian subvarieties in some projective spaces. Although most of them are singular, a new example of smooth Legendrian variety in dimension 8 is in this family. The 8-fold has interesting properties: it is a compactification of the special linear group, a Fano manifold of index 5 and Picard number 1.
To each subvariety $X$ in projective $n$-space of codimension $m$ we associate an integer sequence of length $m + 1$ from $1$ to the degree of $X$ recording the maximal cardinalities of finite, reduced intersections of $X$ with linear subvarieties. We call this the sequence of secant indices of $X$. Similar numbers have been studied independently with the aim of classifying subvarieties with extremal secant spaces. Our focus in this note is the study of the combinatorial properties that the secant indices satisfy collectively. We show these sequences are strictly increasing for nondegenerate s…
We prove Barth-type connectedness results for low-codimension smooth subvarieties with good numerical properties inside certain "easy" ambient spaces (such as homogeneous varieties, or spherical varieties). The argument employs some basics from the theory of cones of cycle classes, in particular the notion of bigness of a cycle class.
We work over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. Ellingsrud-Peskine proved that smooth surfaces in P^4 are subject to strong limitations. Their whole argument is derived from the fact that the sectional genus of surfaces of degree d lying on a hypersurface of degree s varies in an interval of length \frac{d(s-1)^2}{2s}. The aim of the present paper is to show that for smooth codimension two subvarieties of P^n, n\geq 5, one can get a similar result with an interval whose length depends only on s. The main point is Lemma 1.1 whose proof is a direct application of the posi…
Real Legendrian subvarieties are classical objects of differential geometry and classical mechanics and they have been studied since antiquity. However, complex Legendrian subvarieties are much more rigid and have more exceptional properties. The most remarkable case is the Legendrian subvarieties of projective space and prior to the author's research only few smooth examples of these were known. The first series of results of this thesis is related to the automorphism group of any Legendrian subvariety in any projective contact manifold. The connected component of this group (under suitable m…
We consider weak Fano manifolds with small contractions obtained by blowing up successively curves and subvarieties of codimension 2 in products of projective spaces. We give a classification result for a special case. In the process of proof, we describe explicitly the structure of nef cones and compute the self intersection numbers of anti-canonical divisors for such weak Fano manifolds.
We study the geometry of $3$-codimensional smooth subvarieties of the complex projective space. In particular, we classify all quasi-Buchsbaum Calabi--Yau threefolds in projective $6$-space. Moreover, we prove that this classification includes all Calabi--Yau threefolds contained in a possibly singular 5-dimensional quadric as well as all Calabi--Yau threefolds of degree at most $14$ in $\mathbb{P}^6$.
We prove that a GIT chamber quotient of an affine variety $X=Spec(A)$ by a reductive group $G$, where $A$ is an almost factorial domain, is a Mori dream space if it is projective, regardless of the codimension of the unstable locus. This includes an explicit description of the Picard number, the pseudoeffective cone, and the Mori chambers in terms of GIT. We apply the results to quiver moduli, to show that they are Mori dream spaces if the quiver contains no oriented cycles, and if stability and semistability coincide. We give a formula for the Picard number in quiver terms. As a second applic…
In this article we study how the birational geometry of a normal projective variety $X$ is influenced by a normal subvariety $A \subset X.$ One of the most basic examples in this context is provided by the following situation. Let $f:X\to Y$ be a surjective holomorphic map with connected fibers between compact connected complex manifolds. It is well known that given a general fiber $A$ of $f$ we have $$ κ(X)\le κ(A)+\dim Y. $$ This article grew out of the realization that this result should be true with $\dim Y$ replaced by the codimension $\cod_X A$ for a pair $(X,A)$ consisting of a normal s…
Non-dicritical codimension one foliations on projective spaces of dimension four or higher always have an invariant algebraic hypersurface. The proof relies on a strengthening of a result by Rossi on the algebraization/continuation of analytic subvarieties of projective spaces.
In this paper, we study rational sections of the relative Picard scheme of a linear system on a smooth projective variety. We prove that if the linear system is basepoint-free and the locus of non-integral divisors has codimension at least two, then all rational sections of the relative Picard scheme come from restrictions of line bundles on the variety. As a consequence, we describe the group of sections of the Hitchin fibration for moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on curves.
Let $X$ be a codimension 1 subvariety of dimension $>1$ of a variety of minimal degree $Y$. If $X$ is subcanonical with Gorenstein canonical singularities admitting a crepant resolution, then $X$ is Arithmetically Gorenstein and we characterise such subvarieties $X$ of $Y$ via apolarity as those whose apolar hypersurfaces are Fermat.
In casual discussion, a stack is often described as a variety (the coarse space) together with stabilizer groups attached to some of its subvarieties. However, this description does not uniquely specify the stack. Our main result shows that for a large class of stacks one typically encounters, this description does indeed characterize them. Moreover, we prove that each such stack can be described in terms of two simple procedures applied iteratively to its coarse space: canonical stack constructions and root stack constructions. More precisely, if $\mathcal X$ is a smooth separated tame Delign…
The aim of this paper is to study Weil divisors on a singular rational normal scroll X. In particular the author describes explicitly the group of divisorial sheaves associated to Weil divisors on X, via the direct image of the Picard group of the canonical resolution of X, which is very well known. The analysis naturally splits in two cases, depending on the codimension of the vertex of X (>2 or =2). When the codimension of the vertex is >2, then the two groups are isomorphic and there is a natural intersection form in X inherited from the one in the canonical resolution. When the codimension…
In this paper we describe the birational geometry of Fano double spaces $V\stackrelσ{\to}{\mathbb P}^{M+1}$ of index 2 and dimension $\geqslant 8$ with at mostquadratic singularities of rank $\geqslant 8$, satisfying certain additional conditions of general position: we prove that these varieties have no structures of a rationally connected fibre space over a base of dimension $\geqslant 2$, that every birational map $χ\colon V\dashrightarrow V'$ onto the total space of a Mori fibre space $V'/{\mathbb P}^1$ induces an isomorphism $V^+\cong V'$ of the blow up $V^+$ of the variety $V$ along $σ^{…
The purpose of this paper is to show how the generic vanishing theorems of M. Green and the second author can be used to settle several questions and conjectures concerning the geometry of irregular complex projective varieties. First, we prove a conjecture of Arbarello and DeConcini characterizing principally polarized abelian varieties whose theta divisors are singular in codimension one. Secondly, we study the holomorphic Euler characteristics of varieties of general type having maximal Albanese dimension: we verify a conjecture of Kollar for subvarieties of abelian varieties, but show that…
Given a projective variety X defined over a finite field, the zeta function of divisors attempts to count all irreducible, codimension one subvarieties of X, each measured by their projective degree. When the dimension of X is greater than one, this is a purely p-adic function, convergent on the open unit disk. Four conjectures are expected to hold, the first of which is p-adic meromorphic continuation to all of C_p. When the divisor class group (divisors modulo linear equivalence) of X has rank one, then all four conjectures are known to be true. In this paper, we discuss the higher rank case…
Inspired by the computation of the Kodaira dimension of symmetric powers Xm of a complex projective variety X of dimension n $\ge$ 2 by Arapura and Archava, we study their analytic and algebraic hyperbolic properties. First we show that Xm is special if and only if X is special (except when the core of X is a curve). Then we construct dense entire curves in (suf-ficiently hig) symmetric powers of K3 surfaces and product of curves. We also give a criterion based on the positivity of jet differentials bundles that implies pseudo-hyperbolicity of symmetric powers. As an application, we obtain the…
