Given $α> -1$, consider the second order differential operator in $(0,\infty)$,
$$L_αf \equiv (x^2 \frac{d^2}{dx^2} + (2α+3)x \frac{d}{dx} + x^2 + (α+1)^2)(f), $$
which appears in the theory of Bessel functions. The purpose of this paper is to develop the corresponding harmonic analysis taking $L_α$ as the analogue to the classical Laplacian. Namely we study the boundedness properties of the heat and Poisson semigroups. These boundedness properties allow us to obtain some convergence results that can be used to solve the Cauchy problem for the corresponding heat and Poisson equations.
The paper gives a short account of some basic properties of \textit{Dirichlet-to-Neumann} operators $Λ_{γ,\partialΩ}$ including the corresponding semigroups motivated by the Laplacian transport in anisotropic media ($γ\neq I$) and by elliptic systems with dynamical boundary conditions. For illustration of these notions and the properties we use the explicitly constructed \textit{Lax semigroups}. We demonstrate that for a general smooth bounded convex domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ the corresponding {Dirichlet-to-Neumann} semigroup $\left\{U(t):= e^{-t Λ_{γ,\partialΩ}}\right\}_{t\geq0}$ in the …
Let $M$ be a finite von Neumann algebra. In the first part, we give asymptotic results about $M$-stable sequences of weak*-continuous mappings which are related with operators belonging to $M$. In the second part, we extend, by a shorter way, similarity results given in [CaFa2] to unbounded semigroups of operators contained in a finite von Neumann algebra.
The eigenvectors of an ergodic semigroup of linear normal positive unital maps on a von Neumann algebra are described. Moreover, it is shown by means of examples, that mere positivity of the maps in question is not sufficient for Frobenius theory as in S. Albeverio and R. Høegh-Krohn, \emph{Frobenius theory of positive maps of von Neumann algebras}, Comm. Math. Phys. \bf{64}(1978), 83--94, to hold.

We study the structure of the generator of a symmetric, conservative quantum dynamical semigroup with norm-bounded generator on a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful semifinite trace. For von Neumann algebras with abelian commutant (i.e. type I von Neumann algebras), we give a necessary and sufficient algebraic condition for the generator of such a semigroup to be written as a sum of square of self-adjoint derivations of the von Neumann algebra. This generalizes some of the results obtained by Albeverio, H(phi)egh-Krohn and Olsen [Alb] for the special case of the finite dimensional ma…
We prove that any weak* continuous semigroup $(T_t)_{t \geq 0}$ of factorizable Markov maps acting on a von Neumann algebra $M$ equipped with a normal faithful state can be dilated by a group of Markov $*$-automorphisms analogous to the case of a single factorizable Markov operator, which is an optimal result. We also give a version of this result for strongly continuous semigroups of operators acting on noncommutative $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces and examples of semigroups to which the results of this paper can be applied. Our results implies the boundedness of the McIntosh's $\mathrm{H}^\infty$ fun…
We develop a generalized Littlewood-Paley theory for semigroups acting on $L^p$-spaces of functions with values in uniformly convex or smooth Banach spaces. We characterize, in the vector-valued setting, the validity of the one-sided inequalities concerning the generalized Littlewood-Paley-Stein $g$-function associated with a subordinated Poisson symmetric diffusion semigroup by the martingale cotype and type properties of the underlying Banach space. We show that in the case of the usual Poisson semigroup and the Poisson semigroup subordinated to the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup on ${\mathbb …
In this paper we establish $L^p$-boundedness properties for variation, oscillation and jump operators associated with Riesz transforms and Poisson semigroups related to Laguerre polynomial expansions.
Under the standard assumptions on the variable exponent $p(x)$ (log- and decay conditions), we give a characterization of the variable exponent Bessel potential space $\mathfrak B^α[L^{p(\cdot)}(\mathbb R^n)]$ in terms of the rate of convergence of the Poisson semigroup $P_t$. We show that the existence of the Riesz fractional derivative $\mathbb{D}^\al f$ in the space $L^{p(\cdot)}(\rn)$ is equivalent to the existence of the limit $\frac{1}{\ve^\al}(I-P_\ve)^\al f$. In the pre-limiting case $\sup_x p(x)<\frac{n}{\al}$ we show that the Bessel potential space is characterized by the condition $…
Consider $d$ commuting $C_{0}$-semigroups (or equivalently: $d$-parameter $C_{0}$-semigroups) over a Hilbert space for $d \in \mathbb{N}$. In the literature (\textit{cf.} [29, 26, 27, 23, 18, 25]), conditions are provided to classify the existence of unitary and regular unitary dilations. Some of these conditions require inspecting values of the semigroups, some provide only sufficient conditions, and others involve verifying sophisticated properties of the generators. By focussing on semigroups with bounded generators, we establish a simple and natural condition on the generators, \textit{viz…
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain in R d with Lipschitz boundary $Γ$. We define the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator N on L 2 ($Γ$) associated with a second order elliptic operator A = -- d k,j=1 $\partial$ k (c kl $\partial$ l) + d k=1 b k $\partial$ k -- $\partial$ k (c k $\times$) + a 0. We prove a criterion for invariance of a closed convex set under the action of the semigroup of N. Roughly speaking, it says that if the semigroup generated by --A, endowed with Neumann boundary conditions, leaves invariant a closed convex set of L 2 ($Ω$), then the 'trace' of this convex set is invariant for the se…
Recent results of L. Zsido, based on his previous work with C. P. Niculescu and A. Stroh, on actions of topological semigroups on von Neumann algebras, give a Jacobs-de Leeuw-Glicksberg splitting theorem at the von Neumann algebra (rather than Hilbert space) level. We generalize this to the framework of actions of quantum semigroups, namely Hopf-von Neumann algebras. To this end, we introduce and study a notion of almost periodic vectors and operators that is suitable for our setting.
The purpose of this article is to establish upper and lower estimates for the integral kernel of the semigroup exp(-tP) associated to a classical, strongly elliptic pseudodifferential operator P of positive order on a closed manifold. The Poissonian bounds generalize those obtained for perturbations of fractional powers of the Laplacian. In the selfadjoint case, extensions to t in C_+ are studied. In particular, our results apply to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann semigroup.
We prove Poisson upper bounds for the heat kernel of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator with variable H{ö}lder coefficients when the underlying domain is bounded and has a C 1+$κ$-boundary for some $κ$ > 0. We also prove a number of other results such as gradient estimates for heat kernels and Green functions G of elliptic operators with possibly complex-valued coefficients. We establish H{ö}lder continuity of $\nabla$ x $\nabla$ y G up to the boundary. These results are used to prove L p-estimates for commutators of Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators on the boundary of C 1+$κ$-domains. Such estima…
In this paper we analyze the convergence of the following type of series \begin{equation*} T_N f(x)=\sum_{j=N_1}^{N_2} v_j\Big(\mathcal{P}_{a_{j+1}} f(x)-\mathcal{P}_{a_{j}} f(x)\Big),\quad x\in \mathbb R_+, \end{equation*} where $\{\mathcal{P}_t \}_{t>0}$ is the Poisson semigroup of the Bessel operator $\displaystyle Δ_λ:=-{d^2\over dx^2}-{2λ\over x}{d\over dx}$ with $λ$ being a positive constant, $N=(N_1, N_2)\in \mathbb Z^2$ with $N_1<N_2,$ $\{v_j\}_{j\in \mathbb Z}$ is a bounded real sequences and $\{a_j\}_{j\in \mathbb Z}$ is an increasing real sequence. {Our analysis will consist in the …
Let $\{ϕ_s\}_{s\in S}$ be a commutative semigroup of completely positive, contractive, and weak*-continuous linear maps acting on a von Neumann algebra $N$. Assume there exists a semigroup $\{α_s\}_{s\in S}$ of weak*-continuous *-endomorphisms of some larger von Neumann algebra $M\supset N$ and a projection $p\in M$ with $N=pMp$ such that $α_s(1-p)\le 1-p$ for every $s\in S$ and $ϕ_s(y)=pα_s(y)p$ for all $y\in N$. If $\inf_{s\in S}α_s(1-p)=0$ then we show that the map $E:M\to N$ defined by $E(x)=pxp$ for $x\in M$ induces a complete isometry between the fixed point spaces of $\{α_s\}_{s\in S}$ …

In this paper we study two semigroups of completely positive unital self-adjoint maps on the von Neumann algebras of the free orthogonal quantum group $O_N^+$ and the free permutation quantum group $S_N^+$. We show that these semigroups satisfy ultracontractivity and hypercontractivity estimates. We also give results regarding spectral gap and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities.
In this paper we characterize the discrete Hölder spaces by means of the heat and Poisson semigroups associated to the discrete Laplacian. These characterizations allow us to get regularity properties of fractional powers of the discrete Laplacian and the Bessel potentials along these spaces and also in the discrete Zygmund spaces in a more direct way than using the pointwise definition of the spaces. To obtain our results, it has been crucial to get boundedness properties of the heat and Poisson kernels and their derivatives in both space and time variables. We believe that these estimates ar…
For $1<p\leq q$ we show that the Poisson semigroup $e^{-t\sqrt{-Δ}}$ on the $n$-sphere is hypercontractive from $L^{p}$ to $L^{q}$ in dimensions $n \leq 3$ if and only if $e^{-t\sqrt{n}} \leq \sqrt{\frac{p-1}{q-1}}$. We also show that the equivalence fails in large dimensions.
The paper is concerned with the interconnection of the boundary behaviour of the solutions of the exterior Dirichlet and Neumann problems of harmonic analysis for the three-dimensional unit ball with the corresponding behaviour of the associated ergodic inverse problems for the punched unlimited space. The basis is the theory of semigroups of linear operators mapping a Banach space $X$ into itself. The rates of approximation play a basic role. Another tool is a Drazin-like inverse operator $B$ for the infinitesimal generator $A$ of a semigroup that arises naturally in ergodic theory. This oper…
We investigate Fourier multipliers on the compact dual of arbitrary discrete groups. Our main result is a Hörmander-Mihlin multiplier theorem for finite-dimensional cocycles with optimal smoothness condition. We also find Littlewood-Paley type inequalities in group von Neumann algebras, prove $L_p$ estimates for noncommutative Riesz transforms and characterize $L_\infty \to \mathrm{BMO}$ boundedness for radial Fourier multipliers. The key novelties of our approach are to exploit group cocycles and cross products in Fourier multiplier theory in conjunction with BMO spaces associated to semigrou…
