The paper gives a short account of some basic properties of \textit{Dirichlet-to-Neumann} operators $Λ_{γ,\partialΩ}$ including the corresponding semigroups motivated by the Laplacian transport in anisotropic media ($γ\neq I$) and by elliptic systems with dynamical boundary conditions. For illustration of these notions and the properties we use the explicitly constructed \textit{Lax semigroups}. We demonstrate that for a general smooth bounded convex domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ the corresponding {Dirichlet-to-Neumann} semigroup $\left\{U(t):= e^{-t Λ_{γ,\partialΩ}}\right\}_{t\geq0}$ in the Hilbert space $L^2(\partial Ω)$ belongs to the \textit{trace-norm} von Neumann-Schatten ideal for any $t>0$. This means that it is in fact an \textit{immediate Gibbs} semigroup. Recently Emamirad and Laadnani have constructed a \textit{Trotter-Kato-Chernoff} product-type approximating family $\left\{(V_{γ, \partialΩ}(t/n))^n \right\}_{n \geq 1}$ \textit{strongly} converging to the semigroup $U(t)$ for $n\to\infty$. We conclude the paper by discussion of a conjecture about convergence of the \textit{Emamirad-Laadnani approximantes} in the the {\textit{trace-norm}} topology.
The paper is devoted to a linear dynamics for non-autonomous perturbation of the Gibbs semigroup on a separable Hilbert space. It is shown that evolution family {U(t, s)} 0$\le$s$\le$t solving the non-autonomous Cauchy problem can be approximated in the trace-norm topology by product formulae. The rate of convergence of product formulae approximants {U n (t, s)} {0$\le$s$\le$t,n$\ge$1} to the solution operator {U(t, s)} {0$\le$s$\le$t} is also established.
Let $M$ be a finite von Neumann algebra. In the first part, we give asymptotic results about $M$-stable sequences of weak*-continuous mappings which are related with operators belonging to $M$. In the second part, we extend, by a shorter way, similarity results given in [CaFa2] to unbounded semigroups of operators contained in a finite von Neumann algebra.
Given $α> -1$, consider the second order differential operator in $(0,\infty)$, $$L_αf \equiv (x^2 \frac{d^2}{dx^2} + (2α+3)x \frac{d}{dx} + x^2 + (α+1)^2)(f), $$ which appears in the theory of Bessel functions. The purpose of this paper is to develop the corresponding harmonic analysis taking $L_α$ as the analogue to the classical Laplacian. Namely we study the boundedness properties of the heat and Poisson semigroups. These boundedness properties allow us to obtain some convergence results that can be used to solve the Cauchy problem for the corresponding heat and Poisson equations.
The eigenvectors of an ergodic semigroup of linear normal positive unital maps on a von Neumann algebra are described. Moreover, it is shown by means of examples, that mere positivity of the maps in question is not sufficient for Frobenius theory as in S. Albeverio and R. Høegh-Krohn, \emph{Frobenius theory of positive maps of von Neumann algebras}, Comm. Math. Phys. \bf{64}(1978), 83--94, to hold.
We consider the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator associated to a strictly elliptic operator on the space $\mathrm{C}(\partial M)$ of continuous functions on the boundary $\partial M$ of a compact manifold $\overline{M}$ with boundary. We prove that it generates an analytic semigroup of angle $\fracπ{2}$. This yields that the corresponding strictly elliptic operator with Wentzell boundary conditions generates a compact and analytic semigroups of angle $\fracπ{2}$ on the space $\mathrm{C}(\overline{M})$.

We study the structure of the generator of a symmetric, conservative quantum dynamical semigroup with norm-bounded generator on a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful semifinite trace. For von Neumann algebras with abelian commutant (i.e. type I von Neumann algebras), we give a necessary and sufficient algebraic condition for the generator of such a semigroup to be written as a sum of square of self-adjoint derivations of the von Neumann algebra. This generalizes some of the results obtained by Albeverio, H(phi)egh-Krohn and Olsen [Alb] for the special case of the finite dimensional ma…
We prove that any weak* continuous semigroup $(T_t)_{t \geq 0}$ of factorizable Markov maps acting on a von Neumann algebra $M$ equipped with a normal faithful state can be dilated by a group of Markov $*$-automorphisms analogous to the case of a single factorizable Markov operator, which is an optimal result. We also give a version of this result for strongly continuous semigroups of operators acting on noncommutative $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces and examples of semigroups to which the results of this paper can be applied. Our results implies the boundedness of the McIntosh's $\mathrm{H}^\infty$ fun…
Consider $d$ commuting $C_{0}$-semigroups (or equivalently: $d$-parameter $C_{0}$-semigroups) over a Hilbert space for $d \in \mathbb{N}$. In the literature (\textit{cf.} [29, 26, 27, 23, 18, 25]), conditions are provided to classify the existence of unitary and regular unitary dilations. Some of these conditions require inspecting values of the semigroups, some provide only sufficient conditions, and others involve verifying sophisticated properties of the generators. By focussing on semigroups with bounded generators, we establish a simple and natural condition on the generators, \textit{viz…
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain in R d with Lipschitz boundary $Γ$. We define the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator N on L 2 ($Γ$) associated with a second order elliptic operator A = -- d k,j=1 $\partial$ k (c kl $\partial$ l) + d k=1 b k $\partial$ k -- $\partial$ k (c k $\times$) + a 0. We prove a criterion for invariance of a closed convex set under the action of the semigroup of N. Roughly speaking, it says that if the semigroup generated by --A, endowed with Neumann boundary conditions, leaves invariant a closed convex set of L 2 ($Ω$), then the 'trace' of this convex set is invariant for the se…
Recent results of L. Zsido, based on his previous work with C. P. Niculescu and A. Stroh, on actions of topological semigroups on von Neumann algebras, give a Jacobs-de Leeuw-Glicksberg splitting theorem at the von Neumann algebra (rather than Hilbert space) level. We generalize this to the framework of actions of quantum semigroups, namely Hopf-von Neumann algebras. To this end, we introduce and study a notion of almost periodic vectors and operators that is suitable for our setting.
In this paper we relate the generator property of an operator $A$ with (abstract) generalized Wentzell boundary conditions on a Banach space $X$ and its associated (abstract) Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator $N$ acting on a "boundary" space $\partial X$. Our approach is based on similarity transformations and perturbation arguments and allows to split $A$ into an operator $A_{00}$ with Dirichlet-type boundary conditions on a space $X_0$ of states having "zero trace" and the operator $N$. If $A_{00}$ generates an analytic semigroup, we obtain under a weak Hille--Yosida type condition that $A$ gene…
The purpose of this article is to establish upper and lower estimates for the integral kernel of the semigroup exp(-tP) associated to a classical, strongly elliptic pseudodifferential operator P of positive order on a closed manifold. The Poissonian bounds generalize those obtained for perturbations of fractional powers of the Laplacian. In the selfadjoint case, extensions to t in C_+ are studied. In particular, our results apply to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann semigroup.
In a recent paper we presented a general perturbation result for generators of $C_0$-semigroups. The aim of the present paper is to replace, in case the unperturbed semigroup is analytic, the various conditions appearing in this result by simpler assumptions on the domain and range of the operators involved. The power of our result to treat classes of PDE's systematically is illustrated by considering a generic example, a degenerate differential operator with generalized Wentzell boundary conditions and a reaction diffusion equation subject to Neumann boundary conditions with distributed unbou…
We characterize all semigroups $(T(t))_{t\geq0}$ on $L^2(Ω)$ sandwiched between Dirichlet and Neumann ones, i.e.: \begin{equation*}\label{eq:san} e^{tΔ_D}\leq T(t)\leq e^{tΔ_N}\quad,\text{for all }t\geq0 \end{equation*} in the positive operators sense. The proof uses the well-known Beurling-Deny and Lejan formula to drop the locality assumption made usually on the form associated with $(T(t))_{t\geq 0}$.
Let $\{ϕ_s\}_{s\in S}$ be a commutative semigroup of completely positive, contractive, and weak*-continuous linear maps acting on a von Neumann algebra $N$. Assume there exists a semigroup $\{α_s\}_{s\in S}$ of weak*-continuous *-endomorphisms of some larger von Neumann algebra $M\supset N$ and a projection $p\in M$ with $N=pMp$ such that $α_s(1-p)\le 1-p$ for every $s\in S$ and $ϕ_s(y)=pα_s(y)p$ for all $y\in N$. If $\inf_{s\in S}α_s(1-p)=0$ then we show that the map $E:M\to N$ defined by $E(x)=pxp$ for $x\in M$ induces a complete isometry between the fixed point spaces of $\{α_s\}_{s\in S}$ …
We revisit the problem of obtaining uniform gradient estimates for Dirichlet and Neumann heat semigroups on Riemannian manifolds with boundary. As applications, we obtain isoperimetric inequalities, using Ledoux's argument, and uniform quantitative gradient estimates, firstly for $C^2_b$ functions with boundary conditions and then for the unit spectral projection operators of Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians.
A well-known result of W. Ray asserts that if $C$ is an unbounded convex subset of a Hilbert space, then there is a nonexpansive mapping $T$: $C\to C$ that has no fixed point. In this paper we establish some common fixed point properties for a semitopological semigroup $S$ of nonexpansive mappings acting on a closed convex subset $C$ of a Hilbert space, assuming that there is a point $c\in C$ with a bounded orbit and assuming that certain subspace of $C_b(S)$ has a left invariant mean. Left invariant mean (or amenability) is an important notion in harmonic analysis of semigroups and groups int…

We develop a theory of eventually positive $C_0$-semigroups on Banach lattices, that is, of semigroups for which, for every positive initial value, the solution of the corresponding Cauchy problem becomes positive for large times. We give characterisations of such semigroups by means of spectral and resolvent properties of the corresponding generators, complementing existing results on spaces of continuous functions. This enables us to treat a range of new examples including the square of the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions, the bi-Laplacian on $L^p$-spaces, the Dirichlet-to-Neuma…
Let $\mathcal S$ be a semigroup of partial isometries acting on a complex, infinite-dimensional, separable Hilbert space. In this paper we seek criteria which will guarantee that the selfadjoint semigroup $\mathcal T$ generated by $\mathcal S$ consists of partial isometries as well. Amongst other things, we show that this is the case when the set of final projections of elements of $\mathcal S$ generates an abelian von Neumann algebra of uniform finite multiplicity.
The paper is concerned with the interconnection of the boundary behaviour of the solutions of the exterior Dirichlet and Neumann problems of harmonic analysis for the three-dimensional unit ball with the corresponding behaviour of the associated ergodic inverse problems for the punched unlimited space. The basis is the theory of semigroups of linear operators mapping a Banach space $X$ into itself. The rates of approximation play a basic role. Another tool is a Drazin-like inverse operator $B$ for the infinitesimal generator $A$ of a semigroup that arises naturally in ergodic theory. This oper…
In this paper we show novel underlying connections between fractional powers of the Laplacian on the unit sphere and functions from analytic number theory and differential geometry, like the Hurwitz zeta function and the Minakshisundaram zeta function. Inspired by Minakshisundaram's ideas, we find a precise pointwise description of $(-Δ_{\mathbb{S}^{n-1}})^s u(x)$ in terms of fractional powers of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the sphere. The Poisson kernel for the unit ball will be essential for this part of the analysis. On the other hand, by using the heat semigroup on the sphere, addition…
