We show that if a product system comes from a quantum Markov semigroup, then it carries a natural Borel structure with respect to which the semigroup may be realized in terms of a measurable representation. We show, too, that the dual product system of a Borel product system also carries a natural Borel structure. We apply our analysis to study the order interval consisting of all quantum Markov semigroups that are subordinate to a given one.
In his article "On the free convolution with a semicircular distribution," Biane found very useful characterizations of the boundary values of the imaginary part of the Cauchy-Stieltjes transform of the free additive convolution of a probability measure on the real line with a Wigner (semicircular) distribution. Biane's methods were recently extended by Huang to measures which belong to the partial free convolution semigroups introduced by Nica and Speicher. This note further extends some of Biane's methods and results to free convolution powers of operator-valued distributions and to free con…
We realize the Belinschi-Nica semigroup of homomorphisms as a free multiplicative subordination. This realization allows to define more general semigroups of homomorphisms with respect to free multiplicative convolution. For these semigroups we show that a differential equation holds, generalizing the complex Burgers equation. We give examples of free multiplicative subordination and find a relation to the Markov-Krein transform, Boolean stable laws and monotone stable laws. A similar idea works for additive subordination, and in particular we study the free additive subordination associated t…
We describe a Markov dilation for any weak* continuous semigroup $(T_t)_{t \geq 0}$ of selfadjoint unital completely positive Fourier multipliers acting on the group von Neumann algebra $\mathrm{VN}(G)$ of a locally compact group $G$.
We show that the Markov semigroup obtained by Floricel in [Flo08] compressing the $E_0$-semigroup of Skeide [Ske06], does not consist of endomorphisms. It, therefore, cannot be the tail flow of an $E_0$-semigroup. As a corollary of our result, Floricel's construction will allow to get examples of proper type III Markov semigroups that are not tensor products of simpler ones, provided we find type III Arveson systems that do not factor into tensor products.
We prove that any weak* continuous semigroup $(T_t)_{t \geq 0}$ of Markov Fourier multipliers acting on a group von Neumann algebra $\mathrm{VN}(G)$ associated to a locally compact group $G$ can be dilated by a weak* continuous group of Markov $*$-automorphisms on a bigger von Neumann algebra. Our construction relies on probabilistic tools and is even new for the group $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our results imply the boundedness of the McIntosh's $\mathrm{H}^\infty$ functional calculus of the generators of these semigroups on the associated noncommutative $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces.
We study a class of ergodic quantum Markov semigroups on finite-dimensional unital $C^*$-algebras. These semigroups have a unique stationary state $σ$, and we are concerned with those that satisfy a quantum detailed balance condition with respect to $σ$. We show that the evolution on the set of states that is given by such a quantum Markov semigroup is gradient flow for the relative entropy with respect to $σ$ in a particular Riemannian metric on the set of states. This metric is a non-commutative analog of the $2$-Wasserstein metric, and in several interesting cases we are able to show, in an…
The Haagerup approximation property for a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful normal state $φ$ is shown to imply existence of unital, $φ$-preserving and KMS-symmetric approximating maps. This is used to obtain a characterisation of the Haagerup approximation property via quantum Markov semigroups (extending the tracial case result due to Jolissaint and Martin) and further via quantum Dirichlet forms.
We study asymptotic behavior of a Markov semigroup on a von-Neumann algebra by exploring a maximal von-Neumann subalgebra where the Markov semigroup is an automorphism. This enables us to prove that strong mixing is equivalent to ergodic property for continuous time Markov semigroup on a type-I von-Neumann algebra with center completely atomic. For discrete time dynamics we prove that an aperiodic ergodic Markov semigroup on a type-I von-Neumann algebra with center completely atomic is strong mixing. There exists a tower of isomorphic von-Neumann algebras generated by the weak Markov process a…
Cipriani and Sauvageot have shown that for any $L^2$-generator $L^{(2)}$ of a tracially symmetric quantum Markov semigroup on a C*-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ there exists a densely defined derivation $δ$ from $\mathcal{A}$ to a Hilbert bimodule $H$ such that $L^{(2)}=δ^*\circ \overlineδ$. Here we show that this construction of a derivation can in general not be generalised to quantum Markov semigroups that are symmetric with respect to a non-tracial state. In particular we show that all derivations to Hilbert bimodules can be assumed to have a concrete form, and then we use this form to show that i…
Let H be a separable Hilbert space. Given two strongly commuting CP_0-semigroups $ϕ$ and $θ$ on B(H), there is a Hilbert space K containing H and two (strongly) commuting E_0-semigroups $α$ and $β$ such that $ϕ_s \circ θ_t (P_H A P_H) = P_H α_s \circ β_t (A) P_H$ for all s,t and all A in B(K). In this note we prove that if $ϕ$ is not an automorphism semigroup then $α$ is cocycle conjugate to the minimal *-endomorphic dilation of $ϕ$, and that if $ϕ$ is an automorphism semigroup then $α$ is also an automorphism semigroup. In particular, we conclude that if $ϕ$ is not an automorphism semigroup a…
We prove that for a symmetric Markov semigroup, Ricci curvature bounded from below by a non-positive constant combined with a finite $L_\infty$-mixing time implies the modified log-Sobolev inequality. Such $L_\infty$-mixing time estimates always hold for Markov semigroups that have spectral gap and finite Varopoulos dimension. Our results apply to non-ergodic quantum Markov semigroups with noncommutative Ricci curvature bounds recently introduced by Carlen and Maas. As an application, we prove that the heat semigroup on a compact Riemannian manifold admits a uniform modified log-Sobolev inequa…
Invariance properties of linear functionals and linear maps on algebras of functions on quantum homogeneous spaces are studied, in particular for the special case of expected coideal *-subalgebras. Several one-to-one correspondences between such invariant functionals are established. Adding a positivity condition, this yields one-to-one correspondences of invariant quantum Markov semigroups acting on expected coideal *-subalgebras and certain convolution semigroups of states on the underlying compact quantum group. This gives an approach to classifying invariant quantum Markov semigroups on th…
Strongly continuous semigroups of unital completely positive maps (i.e. quantum Markov semigroups or quantum dynamical semigroups) on compact quantum groups are studied. We show that quantum Markov semigroups on the universal or reduced C${}^*$-algebra of a compact quantum group which are translation invariant (w.r.t. to the coproduct) are in one-to-one correspondence with Lévy processes on its $*$-Hopf algebra. We use the theory of Lévy processes on involutive bialgebras to characterize symmetry properties of the associated quantum Markov semigroup. It turns out that the quantum Markov semigr…
We present, for the first time, the result (from 2008) that (normal, strongly continuous) Markov semigroups on $\mathscr{B}(G)$ ($G$ a separable Hilbert space) admit a Hudson-Parthasarathy dilation (that is, a dilation to a cocycle perturbation of a noise) if and only if the Markov semigroup is spatial (that is, if it dominates an elementary CP-semigroup). The proof is by general abstract nonsense (taken from Arveson's classification of $E_0$-semigroups on $\mathscr{B}(H)$ by Arveson systems up to cocycle conjugacy) and not, as usual, by constructing the cocycle as a solution of a quantum stoc…
In this note we prove a refined version of the Christensen-Evans theorem for generators of uniformly continuous GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroups. We use this result to show the existence of GNS-symmetric extensions of GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroups. In particular, this implies that the generators of GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroups on finite-dimensional von Neumann algebra can be written in the form specified by Alicki's theorem.
In this paper, we study Markov dynamics on unitary duals of compact quantum groups. We construct such dynamics from characters of quantum groups. Then we show that the dynamics have generators, and we give an explicit formula of the generators using the representation theory. Moreover, we construct Markov dynamics on the unitary dual of an inductive limit of compact quantum groups.
Cesaro convergence of spherical averages is proven for measure-preserving actions of Markov semigroups and groups. Convergence in the mean is established for functions in $L^p$, $1\le p<\infty$, and pointwise convergence for functions in $L^\infty$. In particular, for measure-preserving actions of word hyperbolic groups (in the sense of Gromov) we obtain Cesaro convergence of spherical averages with respect to any symmetric set of generators.
We prove that any weak* continuous semigroup $(T_t)_{t \geq 0}$ of factorizable Markov maps acting on a von Neumann algebra $M$ equipped with a normal faithful state can be dilated by a group of Markov $*$-automorphisms analogous to the case of a single factorizable Markov operator, which is an optimal result. We also give a version of this result for strongly continuous semigroups of operators acting on noncommutative $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces and examples of semigroups to which the results of this paper can be applied. Our results implies the boundedness of the McIntosh's $\mathrm{H}^\infty$ fun…
Quantum Markov Semigroups (QMSs) originally arose in the study of the evolutions of irreversible open quantum systems. Mathematically, they are a generalization of classical Markov semigroups where the underlying function space is replaced by a non-commutative operator algebra. In the case when the QMS is uniformly continuous, theorems due to Lindblad \cite{lindblad}, Stinespring \cite{stinespring}, and Kraus \cite{kraus} imply that the generator of the semigroup has the form $$L(A)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}V_n^*AV_n +GA+AG^*$$ where $V_n$ and G are elements of the underlying operator algebra. In th…
In this article we introduce a complete gradient estimate for symmetric quantum Markov semigroups on von Neumann algebras equipped with a normal faithful tracial state, which implies semi-convexity of the entropy with respect to the recently introduced noncommutative 2-Wasserstein distance. We show that this complete gradient estimate is stable under tensor products and free products and establish its validity for a number of examples. As an application we prove a complete modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality with optimal constant for Poisson-type semigroups on free group factors.
We show that the generator of a GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroup can be written as the square of a derivation. This generalizes a result of Cipriani and Sauvageot for tracially symmetric semigroups. Compared to the tracially symmetric case, the derivations in the general case satisfy a twisted product rule, reflecting the non-triviality of their modular group. This twist is captured by the new concept of Tomita bimodules we introduce. If the quantum Markov semigroup satisfies a certain additional regularity condition, the associated Tomita bimodule can be realized inside the $L^2$ space …
Following up on the recent work on lower Ricci curvature bounds for quantum systems, we introduce two noncommutative versions of curvature-dimension bounds for symmetric quantum Markov semigroups over matrix algebras. Under suitable such curvature-dimension conditions, we prove a family of dimension-dependent functional inequalities, a version of the Bonnet-Myers theorem and concavity of entropy power in the noncommutative setting. We also provide examples satisfying certain curvature-dimension conditions, including Schur multipliers over matrix algebras, Herz-Schur multipliers over group alge…
The concept of balance between two state preserving quantum Markov semigroups on von Neumann algebras is introduced and studied as an extension of conditions appearing in the theory of quantum detailed balance. This is partly motivated by the theory of joinings. Balance is defined in terms of certain correlated states (couplings), with entangled states as a specific case. Basic properties of balance are derived and the connection to correspondences in the sense of Connes is discussed. Some applications and possible applications, including to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, are briefly e…
We study quantum Dirichlet forms and the associated symmetric quantum Markov semigroups on noncommutative $L^2$ spaces. It is known from the work of Cipriani and Sauvageot that these semigroups induce a first order differential calculus, and we use this differential calculus to define a noncommutative transport metric on the set of density matrices. This construction generalizes both the $L^2$-Wasserstein distance on a large class of metric spaces as well as the discrete transport distance introduced by Maas, Mielke, and Chow-Huang-Li-Zhou. Assuming a Bakry-Émery-type gradient estimate, we sho…
In the study of Markovian processes, one of the principal achievements is the equivalence between the $Φ$-Sobolev inequalities and an exponential decrease of the $Φ$-entropies. In this work, we develop a framework of Markov semigroups on matrix-valued functions and generalize the above equivalence to the exponential decay of matrix $Φ$-entropies. This result also specializes to spectral gap inequalities and modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in the random matrix setting. To establish the main result, we define a non-commutative generalization of the carré du champ operator, and prove a …
