We study asymptotic behavior of a Markov semigroup on a von-Neumann algebra by exploring a maximal von-Neumann subalgebra where the Markov semigroup is an automorphism. This enables us to prove that strong mixing is equivalent to ergodic property for continuous time Markov semigroup on a type-I von-Neumann algebra with center completely atomic. For discrete time dynamics we prove that an aperiodic ergodic Markov semigroup on a type-I von-Neumann algebra with center completely atomic is strong mixing. There exists a tower of isomorphic von-Neumann algebras generated by the weak Markov process and a unique up to isomorphism minimal dilated quantum dynamics of endomorphisms associated with the Markov semigroup. The dilated endomorphism is pure in the sense of Powers if and only if the adjoint Markov semigroup satisfies Kolmogorov property. As an application of our general results we find a necessary and sufficient condition for a translation invariant state on a quantum spin chain to be pure. We also find a tower of type-II$_1$ factors canonically associated with the canonical conditional expectation on a sub-factor of a type-II$_1$ factor. This tower of factors unlike Jones's tower do not preserve index. This gives a sequence of Jones's numbers as an invariance for the inclusion of a finite sub-factor of a type-II$_1$ factor.
We study a model of repeated interaction between quantum systems which can be thought of as a non-commutative Markov chain. It is shown that there exists an outgoing Cuntz scattering system associated to this model which induces an input-output formalism with a transfer function corresponding to a multi-analytic operator, in the sense of multivariate operator theory. Finally we show that observability for this system is closely related to the scattering theory of non-commutative Markov chains.
In this paper we show how questions about operator algebras constructed from stochastic matrices motivate new results in the study of harmonic functions on Markov chains. More precisely, we characterize coincidence of conditional probabilities in terms of (generalized) Doob transforms, which then leads to a stronger classification result for the associated operator algebras in terms of spectral radius and strong Liouville property. Furthermore, we characterize the non-commutative peak points of the associated operator algebra in a way that allows one to determine them from inspecting the matri…
We give a necessary and sufficient criterion when a normal CP-map on a von Neumann algebra admits a restriction to a maximal commutative subalgebra. We apply this result to give a far reaching generalization of Rebolledo's sufficient criterion for the Lindblad generator of a Markov semigroup on B(G).
We construct Markov semi-groups $\mathcal{T}$ and associated BMO-spaces on a finite von Neumann algebra $(\mathcal{M}, τ)$ and obtain results for perturbations of commutators and non-commutative Lipschitz estimates. In particular, we prove that for any $A \in \mathcal{M}$ self-adjoint and $f: \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ Lipschitz there is a Markov semi-group $\mathcal{T}$ such that for $x \in \mathcal{M}$, \[ \Vert [f(A), x] \Vert_{{\rm BMO}(\mathcal{M}, \mathcal{T})} \leq c_{abs} \Vert f' \Vert_\infty \Vert [A, x] \Vert_\infty. \] We obtain an analogue of this result for more general v…
For a large class of C*-algebras $A$, we calculate the $K$-theory of reduced crossed products $A^{\otimes G}\rtimes_rG$ of Bernoulli shifts by groups satisfying the Baum--Connes conjecture. In particular, we give explicit formulas for finite-dimensional C*-algebras, UHF-algebras, rotation algebras, and several other examples. As an application, we obtain a formula for the $K$-theory of reduced C*-algebras of wreath products $H\wr G$ for large classes of groups $H$ and $G$. Our methods use a generalization of techniques developed by the second named author together with Joachim Cuntz and Xin Li…
By defining tracial states on a non-commutative analogue of a path space, we construct Markov dilations for a class of conservative completely Markov semigroups on finite von Neumann algebras. This class includes all symmetric semigroups. For well chosen semigroups (for instance with generator any divergence form operator associated to a derivation valued in the coarse correspondence) those dilations give rise to stationary solutions of certain free SDEs previously considered by D. Shlyakhtenko. Among applications, we prove a non-commutative Talagrand inequality for non-microstates free entrop…
We introduce a notion of uniformly continuous orbit equivalence as a subequivalence relation of continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided topological Markov shifts. It is described in terms of gauge actions on the associated Cuntz-Krieger algebras and continuous full groups of the Markov shifts.
We show that the (Gurevich) topological entropy for the countable Markov shift associated with an infinite transition matrix $A$ coincides with the non-commutative topological entropy for the Exel--Laca algebra associated with $A$, under certain conditions on $A$. An important example satisfying the conditions is the renewal shift, which is not locally finite. We also pose interesting questions for future research on non-commutative topological entropy for non-locally finite transition matrices.
We will introduce a notion of strongly continuous orbit equivalence in one-sided topological Markov shifts. Strongly continuous orbit equivalence yields a topological conjugacy between their two-sided topological Markov shifts $(\bar{X}_A, \barσ_A)$ and $(\bar{X}_B, \barσ_B)$. We prove that one-sided topological Markov shifts $(X_A, σ_A)$ and $(X_B, σ_B)$ are strongly continuous orbit equivalent if and only if there exists an isomorphism bewteen the Cuntz-Krieger algebras ${\mathcal{O}}_A$ and ${\mathcal{O}}_B$ preserving their maximal commutative $C^*$-subalgebras $C(X_A)$ and $C(X_B)$ and gi…
We solve, mainly by counterexamples, many natural questions regarding maximal commutative subalgebras invariant under CP-maps or semigroups of CP-maps on a von Neumann algebra. In particular, we discuss the structure of the generators of norm continuous semigroups on B(G) leaving a maximal commutative subalgebra invariant and show that there exists Markov CP-semigroups on M_d without invariant maximal commutative subalgebras for any d>2.
Let $(X_A,σ_A)$ be the right one-sided topological Markov shift for an irreducible matrix with entries in $\{0,1\}$, and $Γ_A$ the continuous full group of $(X_A,σ_A)$. For two irreducible matrices $A$ and $B$ with entries in $\{0,1\}$, it will be proved that the continuous full groups $Γ_A$ and $Γ_B$ are isomorphic as abstract groups if and only if their one-sided topological Markov shifts $(X_A,σ_A)$ and $(X_B,σ_B)$ are continuously orbit equivalent.
For continuously orbit equivalent one-sided topological Markov shifts $(X_A,σ_A)$ and $(X_B,σ_B)$, their eventually periodic points and cocycle functions are studied. As a result we directly construct an isomorphism between their ordered cohomology groups $(\bar{H}^A, \bar{H}^A_+)$ and $(\bar{H}^B, \bar{H}^B_+)$. We also show that the cocycle functions for the continuous orbit equivalences give rise to positive elements of the ordered cohomology, so that the the zeta functions of continuously orbit equivalent topological Markov shifts are related. The set of Borel measures is shown to be invar…
We will prove that one-sided topological Markov shifts $(X_A,σ_A)$ and $(X_B,σ_B)$ for matrices $A$ and $B$ with entries in $\{0,1\}$ are topologically orbit equivalent if and only if there exists an isomorphism between the Cuntz-Krieger algebras ${\Cal O}_A$ and ${\Cal O}_B$ keeping their commutative $C^*$-subalgerbas $C(X_A)$ and $C(X_B)$. It is also equivalent to the condition that there exists a homeomorphism from $X_A$ to $X_B$ intertwining their topological full groups. We will also study structure of the automorphisms of ${\Cal O}_A$ keeping the commutative $C^*$-algebra $C(X_A)$.
We construct a non-commutative Aleksandrov-Clark measure for any element in the operator-valued free Schur class, the closed unit ball of the free Toeplitz algebra of vector-valued full Fock space over $\mathbb{C} ^d$. Here, the free (analytic) Toeplitz algebra is the unital weak operator topology (WOT)-closed algebra generated by the component operators of the free shift, the row isometry of left creation operators. This defines a bijection between the free operator-valued Schur class and completely positive maps (non-commutative AC measures) on the operator system of the free disk algebra, t…
We introduce a non-commutative extension of Tsirelson-Vershik's noises, called (non-commutative) continuous Bernoulli shifts. These shifts encode stochastic independence in terms of commuting squares, as they are familiar in subfactor theory. Such shifts are, in particular, capable of producing Arveson's product system of type I and type II. We investigate the structure of these shifts and prove that the von Neumann algebra of a (scalar-expected) continuous Bernoulli shift is either finite or of type III. The role of (`classical') stationary flows for Tsirelson-Vershik's noises is now played b…
The Smirnov class for the classical Hardy space is the set of ratios of bounded analytic functions on the open complex unit disk with outer denominators. This definition extends naturally to the commutative and non-commutative multi-variable settings of the Drury-Arveson space and the full Fock space over $\mathbb C ^d$. Identifying the Fock space with the free multi-variable Hardy space of non-commutative or free holomorphic functions on the non-commutative open unit ball, we prove that any closed, densely-defined operator affiliated to the right free multiplier algebra of the full Fock space…
For a given finite directed graph $G$, there are two types of Markov-Dyck shifts, the Markov-Dyck shift $D_G^V$ of vertex type and the Markov-Dyck shift $D_G^E$ of edge type. It is shown that, if $G$ does not have multi-edges, the former is a finite-to-one factor of the latter, and they have the same topological entropy. An expression for the zeta function of a Markov-Dyck shift of vertex type is given. It is different from that of the Markov-Dyck shift of edge type.
Let $A$ be an $N\times N$ irreducible matrix with entries in $\{0,1\}$. We present an easy way to find an $(N+3)\times (N+3)$ irreducible matrix $\bar{A}$ with entries in $\{0,1\}$ such that their Cuntz--Krieger algebras ${\mathcal{O}}_A$ and ${\mathcal{O}}_{\bar{A}}$ are isomorphic and $ \det(1 -A) = - \det(1-\bar{A}). $ As a consequence, we know that two Cuntz--Krieger algebras ${\mathcal{O}}_A$ and ${\mathcal{O}}_B$ are isomorphic if and only if the one-sided topological Markov shift $(X_A, σ_A)$ is continuously orbit equivalent to $(X_B, σ_B)$ or $(X_{\bar{B}}, σ_{\bar{B}}).$
We will characterize topologically conjugate two-sided topological Markov shifts $(\bar{X}_A,\barσ_A)$ in terms of the associated asymptotic Ruelle $C^*$-algebras ${\mathcal{R}}_A$ with its commutative $C^*$-subalgebras $C(\bar{X}_A)$ and the canonical circle actions. We will also show that extended Ruelle algebras ${\widetilde{\mathcal{R}}}_A$, which are purely infinite version of the asymptotic Ruelle algebras, with its commutative $C^*$-subalgebras $C(\bar{X}_A)$ and the canonical torus actions $γ^A$ are complete invariants for topological conjugacy of two-sided topological Markov shifts. W…
We study discrete flow equivalence of two-sided topological Markov shifts by using extended Ruelle algebras. We characterize flow equivalence of two-sided topological Markov shifts in terms of conjugacy of certain actions weighted by ceiling functions of two-dimensional torus on the stabilized extended Ruelle algebras for the Markov shifts.
In this paper we use the description of free group factors as the von Neumann algebras of Berezin's deformation of the upper half-plane, modulo PSL$(2,{\Bbb Z})$. The derivative, in the deformation parameter, of the product in the corresponding algebras, is a positive Hochschild 2-cocycle, defined on a dense subalgebra. By analyzing the structure of the cocycle we prove that there is a generator $\cal L$ for a quantum dynamical semigroup that implements the cocycle on a strongly dense subalgebra. For $x$ in the dense subalgebra, ${\cal L}(x)$ is the (diffusion) operator $$ {\cal L}(x)=Λ(x)-(1/…
Motivated by importance of operator spaces contained in the set of all scalar multiples of isometries ($MI$-spaces) in a separable Hilbert space for $C^*$-algebras and E-semigroups we exhibit more properties of such spaces. For example, if an $MI$-space contains an isometry with shift part of finite multiplicity, then it is one-dimensional. We propose a simple model of a unilateral shift of arbitrary multiplicity and show that each separable subspace of a Hilbert space is the range of a shift. Also, we show that $MI$-spaces are non-symmetric, very unfriendly to multiplication, and prove a Comm…
We will characterize topological conjugate one-sided topological Markov shifts in terms of their subgroups of continuous full groups and subalgebras of Cuntz--Krieger algebras.
We will study torus actions on Cuntz--Krieger algebras trivially acting on its canonical maximal abelian $C^*$-subalgebras from the view points of continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided topological Markov shifts and flow equivalence of two-sided topological Markov shifts.
We study KMS states for gauge actions with potential functions on Cuntz--Krieger algebras whose underlying one-sided topological Markov shifts are continuous orbit equivalent. As a result, we have a certain relationship between topological entropy of continuous orbit equivalent one-sided topological Markov shifts.
We will characterize topological conjugacy classes of one-sided topological Markov shifts in terms of the associated Cuntz--Krieger algebras and its gauge actions with potentials.
We introduce notions of suspension and flow equivalence on one-sided topological Markov shifts, which we call one-sided suspension and one-sided flow equivalence, respectively. We prove that one-sided flow equivalence is equivalent to continuous orbit equivalence on one-sided topological Markov shifts. We also show that the zeta function of the flow on a one-sided suspension is a dynamical zeta function with some potential function and that the set of certain dynamical zeta functions is invariant under one-sided flow equivalence of topological Markov shifts.
We study the relations between (tight) logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, entropy decay and spectral gap inequalities for Markov evolutions on von Neumann algebras. We prove that log-Sobolev inequalities (in the non-commutative form defined by Olkiewicz and Zegarlinski) imply spectral gap inequalities, with optimal relation between the constants. Furthermore, we show that a uniform exponential decay of a proper relative entropy is equivalent to a modified version of log-Sobolev inequalities; this entropy decay turns out to be implied by the usual log-Sobolev inequality adding some regularity co…
The Markov-Dyck shifts arise from finite directed graphs. An expression for the zeta function of a Markov-Dyck shift is given. The derivation of this expression is based on a formula in Keller (G. Keller, {\it Circular codes, loop counting, and zeta-functions}, J. Combinatorial Theory {\bf 56} (1991), pp. 75--83). For a class of examples that includes the Fibonacci-Dyck shift the zeta functions and topological entropy ae determined.
We will study several subgroups of continuous full groups of one-sided topological Markov shifts from the view points of cohomology groups of full group actions on the shift spaces. We also study continuous orbit equivalence and strongly continuous orbit equivalence in terms of these subgroups of the continuous full groups and the cohomology groups.
In the setting of finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebras ${\mathcal A}$ we define what we call a Riemannian metric for ${\mathcal A}$, which when ${\mathcal A}$ is commutative is very closely related to a finite resistance network. We explore the relationship with Dirichlet forms and corresponding seminorms that are Markov and Leibniz, with corresponding matricial structure and metric on the state space. We also examine associated Laplace and Dirac operators, quotient energy seminorms, resistance distance, and the relationship with standard deviation.
From Kümmerer's investigations on stationary Markov processes has emerged an operator algebraic definition of white noises which captures many examples from classical as well as from non-commutative probability. Within non-commutative $L^p$-spaces associated to a white noise, the role of (non-)commutative Lévy processes is played by additive cocycles for the white noise shift, and moreover, the notion for exponentials of classical Lévy processes is generalized by unitary cocycles. As a main result we report a bijective correspondence between additive and unitary cocycles for white noise shifts…
Let A,B be square irreducible matrices with entries in {0,1}. We will show that if the one-sided topological Markov shifts (X_A,σ_A) and (X_B,σ_B) are continuously orbit equivalent, then the two-sided topological Markov shifts (\bar X_A,\barσ_A) and (\bar X_B,\barσ_B) are flow equivalent, and hence det(id-A)=det(id-B). As a result, the one-sided topological Markov shifts (X_A,σ_A) and (X_B,σ_B) are continuously orbit equivalent if and only if the Cuntz-Krieger algebras O_A and O_B are isomorphic and det(id-A)=det(id-B).
We introduce a notion of coded equivalence in one-sided topological Markov shifts. The notion is inspired by coding theory. One-sided topological conjugacy implies coded equivalence. We will show that coded equivalence implies continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided topological Markov shifts.
The matrix normed structure of the unitization of a (non-selfadjoint) operator algebra is determined by that of the original operator algebra. This yields a classification up to completely isometric isomorphism of two-dimensional unital operator algebras. This allows to define invariant distances on the spectrum of commutative operator algebras analogous to the Caratheodory distance for complex manifolds. Moreover, unitizations of two-dimensional operator algebras with zero multiplication provide a rich class of counterexamples. Especially, several badly behaved quotients of function algebras …
We study dynamical optimal transport metrics between density matrices associated to symmetric Dirichlet forms on finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebras. Our setting covers arbitrary skew-derivations and it provides a unified framework that simultaneously generalizes recently constructed transport metrics for Markov chains, Lindblad equations, and the Fermi Ornstein--Uhlenbeck semigroup. We develop a non-nommutative differential calculus that allows us to obtain non-commutative Ricci curvature bounds, logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, transport-entropy inequalities, and spectral gap estimates.
Noncommutative domain algebras were introduced by Popescu as the non-selfadjoint operator algebras generated by weighted shifts on the Full Fock space. This paper uses results from several complex variables to classify many noncommutative domain algebras, and it uses results from operator theory to obtain new bounded domains in hermitian spaces with non-compact automorphic group.
Non-commutative multivariable versions of weighted shift operators arise naturally as `weighted' left creation operators acting on the Fock space Hilbert space. We identify a natural notion of periodicity for these $N$-tuples, and then find a family of inductive limit algebras determined by the periodic weighted shifts which can be regarded as non-commutative multivariable generalizations of the Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras. We establish this by proving that the C*-algebras generated by shifts of a given period are isomorphic to full matrix algebras over Cuntz-Toeplitz algebras. This leads to an …
The Riesz-Markov theorem identifies any positive, finite, and regular Borel measure on the complex unit circle with a positive linear functional on the continuous functions. By the Weierstrass approximation theorem, the continuous functions are obtained as the norm closure of the Disk Algebra and its conjugates. Here, the Disk Algebra can be viewed as the unital norm-closed operator algebra of the shift operator on the Hardy Space, $H^2$ of the disk. Replacing square-summable Taylor series indexed by the non-negative integers, i.e. $H^2$ of the disk, with square-summable power series indexed b…
For an irreducible non-permutation matrix $A$, the triplet $({\mathcal{O}_A},{\mathcal{D}_A},ρ^A)$ for the Cuntz-Krieger algebra ${\mathcal{O}_A}$, its canonical maximal abelian $C^*$-subalgebra ${\mathcal{D}_A}$, and its gauge action $ρ^A$ is called the Cuntz-Krieger triplet. We introduce a notion of strong Morita equivalence in the Cuntz-Krieger triplets, and prove that two Cuntz-Krieger triplets $({\mathcal{O}_A},{\mathcal{D}_A},ρ^A)$ and $({\mathcal{O}_B},{\mathcal{D}_B},ρ^B)$ are strong Morita equivalent if and only if $A$ and $B$ are strong shift equivalent. We also show that the general…

Previous work showed that all Bernoulli shifts over a free group are orbit-equivalent. This result is strengthened here by replacing Bernoulli shifts with the wider class of properly ergodic countable state Markov chains over a free group. A list of related open problems is provided.
In this paper, we will introduce notions of relative version of imprimitivity bimodules and relative version of strong Morita equivalence for pairs of $C^*$-algebras $(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{D})$ such that $\mathcal{D}$ is a $C^*$-subalgebra of $\mathcal{A}$ with certain conditions. We will then prove that two pairs $(\mathcal{A}_1, \mathcal{D}_1)$ and $(\mathcal{A}_2, \mathcal{D}_2)$ are relatively Morita equivalent if and only if their relative stabilizations are isomorphic. In particularly, for two pairs $(\mathcal{O}_A, \mathcal{D}_A)$ and $(\mathcal{O}_B, \mathcal{D}_B)$ of Cuntz--Krieger …
A fundamental result of Biane (1998) states that a process with freely independent increments has the Markov property, but that there are two kinds of free Levy processes: the first kind has stationary increments, while the second kind has stationary transition operators. We show that a process of the first kind (with mean zero and finite variance) has the same transition operators as the free Brownian motion with appropriate initial conditions, while a process of the second kind has the same transition operators as a monotone Levy process. We compute an explicit formula for the generators of …
We examine, for $-1<q<1$, $q$-Gaussian processes, i.e. families of operators (non-commutative random variables) $X_t=a_t+a_t^*$ -- where the $a_t$ fulfill the $q$-commutation relations $a_sa_t^*-qa_t^*a_s=c(s,t)\cdot \id$ for some covariance function $c(\cdot,\cdot)$ -- equipped with the vacuum expectation state. We show that there is a $q$-analogue of the Gaussian functor of second quantization behind these processes and that this structure can be used to translate questions on $q$-Gaussian processes into corresponding (and much simpler) questions in the underlying Hilbert space. In particula…
Given a 0-1 infinite matrix $A$ and its countable Markov shift $Σ_A$, one of the authors and M. Laca have introduced a kind of {\it generalized countable Markov shift} $X_A=Σ_A \cup Y_A$, where $Y_A$ is a special set of finite admissible words. For some of the most studied countable Markov shifts $Σ_A$, $X_A$ is a compactification of $Σ_A$, and always it is at least locally compact. We developed the thermodynamic formalism on the space $X_A$, exploring the connections with standard results on $Σ_A$. New phenomena appear, such as new conformal measures and a {\it length-type phase transition}: …
Countable Markov shifts, denoted by $Σ_A$ for a 0-1 infinite matrix $A$, are central objects in symbolic dynamics and ergodic theory. R. Exel and M. Laca introduced the corresponding operator algebras, a generalization of the Cuntz-Krieger algebras for infinite countable alphabet, and the set $X_A$, a kind of Generalized Markov Shift (GMS) that coincides with $Σ_A$ in the locally compact case. The set $Σ_A$ is dense in $X_A$, and its complement, a set of finite allowed words, is dense in $X_A$ when non-empty. We develop the thermodynamic formalism for $X_A$, introducing the notion of conformal…
