We consider a class of partial differential equations with Carlitz derivatives over a local field of positive characteristic, for which an analog of the Cauchy problem is well-posed. Equations of such type correspond to quasi-holonomic modules over the ring of differential operators with Carlitz derivatives. The above class of equations includes some equations of hypergeometric type. Building on the work of Thakur, we develop his notion of the hypergeometric function of the first kind (whose parameters belonged initially to $\mathbb Z$) in such a way that it becomes fully an object of the function field arithmetic, with the variable, parameters and values from the field of positive characteristic.
In connection with each global field of positive characteristic we exhibit many examples of two-variable algebraic functions possessing properties consistent with a conjectural refinement of the Stark conjecture in the function field case recently proposed by the author (math.NT/0407535). Most notably, all examples are Coleman units. We obtain our results by studying rank one shtukas in which both zero and pole are generic, i.~e., shtukas not associated to any Drinfeld module.
It is well known that Feynman integrals in dimensional regularization often evaluate to functions of hypergeometric type. Inspired by a recent proposal for a coaction on one-loop Feynman integrals in dimensional regularization, we use intersection numbers and twisted homology theory to define a coaction on certain hypergeometric functions. The functions we consider admit an integral representation where both the integrand and the contour of integration are associated with positive geometries. As in dimensionally-regularized Feynman integrals, endpoint singularities are regularized by means of …
Igusa noted that the Hasse invariant of the Legendre family of elliptic curves over a finite field of odd characteristic is a solution mod $p$ of a Gaussian hypergeometric equation. We show that any family of exponential sums over a finite field has a Hasse invariant which is a sum of products of mod $p$ solutions of $A$-hypergeometric systems.
In 1995, Thakur invented and studied positive characteristic analogues of hypergeometric functions. In this paper, we interpret the special values of those functions as periods of a pre-$t$-motive. As a consequence, we show their transcendence and linear independence results by using Chang's refined version of the Anderson-Brownawell-Papanikolas criterion. Furthermore, as by-products, we show some linear/algebraic independence results among the special values of Kochubei multiple polylogarithms according to our period interpretation and the corresponding refined criterion.
We classify the endomorphism algebras of factors of the Jacobian of certain hypergeometric curves over a field of characteristic zero. Other than a few exceptional cases, the endomorphism algebras turn out to be either a cyclotomic field $E=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_q)$, or a quadratic extension of $E$, or $E\oplus E$. This result may be viewed as a generalization of the well known results of the classification of endomorphism algebras of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{C}$.
We study the action of the Hecke operators Un on the set of hy- pergeometric functions, as well as on formal power series. We show that the spectrum of these operators on the set of hypergeometric functions is the set n^a with a an integer and n a positive integer, and that the polylogarithms play a dominant role in the study of the eigenfunctions of the Hecke operators Un on the set of hypergeometric functions. As a corollary of our results on simultaneous eigen- functions, we also obtain an apriori unrelated result regarding the behavior of completely multiplicative hypergeometric coefficien…
Let $q$ be a prime power and $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field with $q$ elements. Let $e$ and $d$ be positive integers. In this paper, for $d\geq2$ and $q\equiv1(\mathrm{mod}~ed(d-1))$, we calculate the number of points on an algebraic curve $E_{e,d}:y^e=x^d+ax+b$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ in terms of $_dF_{d-1}$ Gaussian hypergeometric series with multiplicative characters of orders $d$ and $e(d-1)$, and in terms of $_{d-1}F_{d-2}$ Gaussian hypergeometric series with multiplicative characters of orders $ed(d-1)$ and $e(d-1)$. This helps us to express the trace of Frobenius endomorphis…
Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $n$ be a positive integer. For any positive integer $α$ and $m\in\{1,2,3\}$, we have \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{p^αn-1}\frac{(\frac12)_k}{k!}\cdot\frac{(-4)^k}{m^k}\equiv\bigg(\frac{m(m-4)}{p}\bigg)\sum_{k=0}^{p^{α-1}n-1}\frac{(\frac12)_k}{k!}\cdot\frac{(-4)^k}{m^k}\pmod{p^{2α}}, \end{align*} where $(x)_k=x(x+1)\cdots(x+k-1)$ and $\big(\frac{\cdot}{\cdot}\big)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. Also, when $m=4$, \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{p^αn-1}(-1)^k\cdot\frac{(\frac12)_k}{k!}\equiv p\sum_{k=0}^{p^{α-1}n-1}(-1)^k\cdot\frac{(\frac12)_k}{k!}\pmod{p^{2α}}. \end{align*…
We study modules over the Carlitz ring, a counterpart of the Weyl algebra in analysis over local fields of positive characteristic. It is shown that some basic objects of function field arithmetic, like the Carlitz module, Thakur's hypergeometric polynomials, and analogs of binomial coefficients arising in the function field version of umbral calculus, generate quasi-holonomic modules. This class of modules is, in many respects, similar to the class of holonomic modules in the characteristic zero theory.
For a prime $p\equiv 3\pmod{4}$ and a positive integer $t$, let $q=p^{2t}$. Let $g$ be a primitive element of the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. The Peisert graph $P^\ast(q)$ is defined as the graph with vertex set $\mathbb{F}_q$ where $ab$ is an edge if and only if $a-b\in\langle g^4\rangle \cup g\langle g^4\rangle$. We provide a formula, in terms of finite field hypergeometric functions, for the number of complete subgraphs of order four contained in $P^\ast(q)$. We also give a new proof for the number of complete subgraphs of order three contained in $P^\ast(q)$ by evaluating certain characte…
A Huff curve over a field $K$ is an elliptic curve defined by the equation $ax(y^2-1)=by(x^2-1)$ where $a,b\in K$ are such that $a^2\ne b^2$. In a similar fashion, a general Huff curve over $K$ is described by the equation $x(ay^2-1)=y(bx^2-1)$ where $a,b\in K$ are such that $ab(a-b)\ne 0$. In this note we express the number of rational points on these curves over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd characteristic in terms of Gaussian hypergeometric series $\displaystyle {_2F_1}(λ):={_2F_1}\left(\begin{matrix} ϕ&ϕ& ε\end{matrix}\Big| λ\right)$ where $ϕ$ and $ε$ are the quadratic and trivial c…
The $j$th divisor function $d_j$, which counts the ordered factorisations of a positive integer into $j$ positive integer factors, is a very well-known arithmetic function; in particular, $d_2(n)$ gives the number of divisors of $n$. However, the $j$th non-trivial divisor function $c_j$, which counts the ordered proper factorisations of a positive integer into $j$ factors, each of which is greater than or equal to 2, is rather less well-studied. We also consider associated divisor functions $c_j^{(r)}$, whose definition is motivated by the sum-over divisors recurrence for $d_j$. After reviewin…
In this article, we show a new general linear independence criterion related to values of $G$-functions, including the linear independence of values at algebraic points of contiguous hypergeometric functions, which is not known before. Let $K$ be any algebraic number field and $v$ be a place of $K$. Let $r\in\mathbb{Z}$ with $r\ge2$. Consider $a_1,\ldots,a_{r}, b_1,\ldots,b_{r-1}\in \mathbb{Q}\setminus\{0\}$ not being negative integers. Assume neither $a_k$ nor $a_k+1-b_j$ be strictly positive integers $(1\le k \le r, 1\le j \le r-1)$. Let $α_1,\ldots,α_m\in K\setminus\{0\}$ with $α_1,\ldots,α…
We present a simple technique to compute moments of derivatives of unitary characteristic polynomials. The first part of the technique relies on an idea of Bump and Gamburd: it uses orthonormality of Schur functions over unitary groups to compute matrix averages of characteristic polynomials. In order to consider derivatives of those polynomials, we here need the added strength of the Generalized Binomial Theorem of Okounkov and Olshanski. This result is very natural as it provides coefficients for the Taylor expansions of Schur functions, in terms of shifted Schur functions. The answer is fin…
We give a new proof of the Mordell-Lang conjecture in positive characteristic for finitely generated subgroups. We also make some progress towards the full Mordell-Lang conjecture in positive characteristic.
We prove a quantitative equidistribution statement for certain adelic homogeneous subsets in positive characteristic. As an application, we describe a proof of property tau for arithmetic groups in this context.
This appendix shows that the Fundamental lemma of Jacquet-Rallis, proved by Zhiwei Yun in the positive charactersitic case, is also true in characteristic zero, when residue characteristic is sufficiently large. In fact, this follows immediately from the article "Transfer Principle for the Fundamental Lemma" by R. Cluckers, T.C. Hales and F.Loeser.
Let $P\in \Bbb Q_p[x,y]$, $s\in \Bbb C$ with sufficiently large real part, and consider the integral operator $ (A_{P,s}f)(y):=\frac{1}{1-p^{-1}}\int_{\Bbb Z_p}|P(x,y)|^sf(x) |dx| $ on $L^2(\Bbb Z_p)$. We show that if $P$ is homogeneous then for each character $χ$ of $\Bbb Z_p^\times$ the characteristic function $\det(1-uA_{P,s,χ})$ of the restriction $A_{P,s,χ}$ of $A_{P,s}$ to the eigenspace $L^2(\Bbb Z_p)_χ$ is the $q$-Wronskian of a set of solutions of a (possibly confluent) $q$-hypergeometric equation. In particular, the nonzero eigenvalues of $A_{P,s,χ}$ are the reciprocals of the zeros …
