We obtain strong and uniform asymptotics in every domain of the complex plane for the scaled polynomials $a (3nz)$, $b (3nz)$, and $c (3nz)$ where $a$, $b$, and $c$ are the type II Hermite-Padé approximants to the exponential function of respective degrees $2n+2$, $2n$ and $2n$, defined by $a (z)e^{-z}-b (z)=Ø(z^{3n+2})$ and $a (z)e^{z}-c (z)=Ø(z^{3n+2})$ as $z\to 0$. Our analysis relies on a characterization of these polynomials in terms of a $3\times 3$ matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem which, as a consequence of the famous Mahler relations, corresponds by a simple transformation to a similar Riemann-Hilbert problem for type I Hermite-Padé approximants. Due to this relation, the study that was performed in previous work, based on the Deift-Zhou steepest descent method for Riemann-Hilbert problems, can be reused to establish our present results.
We study the logarihtnmic asymptotic of multiple orthogonal polynomials arising in a mixed type Hermite-Padé approximation problem associated with the rational perturbation of a Nikishin system of functions. The formulas obtained allow to give exact estimates of the rate of convergence of the corresponding Hermite-Padé approximants.
We investigate the asymptotic behavior for type II Hermite-Pade approximation to two functions, where each function has two branch points and the pairs of branch points are separated. We give a classification of the cases such that the limiting counting measures for the poles of the Hermite-Pade approximants are described by an algebraic function of order 3 and genus 0. This situation gives rise to a vector-potential equilibrium problem for three measures and the poles of the common denominator are asymptotically distributed like one of these measures. We also work out the strong asymptotics f…
We propose an algorithm for producing Hermite-Padé polynomials of type I for an arbitrary tuple of $m+1$ formal power series $[f_0,\dots,f_m]$, $m\geq1$, about $z=0$ ($f_j\in{\mathbb C}[[z]]$) under the assumption that the series have a certain (`general position') nondegeneracy property. This algorithm is a straightforward extension of the classical Viskovatov algorithm for construction of Padé polynomials (for $m=1$ our algorithm coincides with the Viskovatov algorithm). The algorithm proposed here is based on a recurrence relation and has the feature that all the Hermite-Padé polynomials co…
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence with geometric rate of the common denominators of simultaneous rational interpolants with a bounded number of poles. The conditions are expressed in terms of intrinsic properties of the system of functions used to build the approximants. Exact rates of convergence for these denominators and the simultaneous rational approximants are provided.
In the present paper we prove a Stieltjes type theorem on the convergence of a sequence of rational functions associated with a mixed type Hermite-Padé approximation problem of a Nikishin system of functions and analyze the ratio asymptotic of the corresponding Hermite-Padé polynomials.
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the polynomials p, q, r of degrees n in type I Hermite-Pade approximation to the exponential function, defined by p(z)e^{-z}+q(z)+r(z)e^{z} = O(z^{3n+2}) as z -> 0. These polynomials are characterized by a Riemann-Hilbert problem for a 3x3 matrix valued function. We use the Deift-Zhou steepest descent method for Riemann-Hilbert problems to obtain strong uniform asymptotics for the scaled polynomials p(3nz), q(3nz), and r(3nz) in every domain in the complex plane. An important role is played by a three-sheeted Riemann surface and certain measures and fu…
In this work type II Hermite-Padé approximants for a vector of Cauchy transforms of smooth Jacobi-type densities are considered. It is assumed that densities are supported on mutually disjoint intervals (an Angelesco system with complex weights). The formulae of strong asymptotics are derived for any ray sequence of multi-indices.
We consider Hermite-Padé approximants in the framework of discrete integrable systems defined on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$. We show that the concept of multiple orthogonality is intimately related to the Lax representations for the entries of the nearest neighbor recurrence relations and it thus gives rise to a discrete integrable system. We show that the converse statement is also true. More precisely, given the discrete integrable system in question there exists a perfect system of two functions, i.e., a system for which the entire table of Hermite-Padé approximants exists. In addition, we …
Hermite-Padé approximants of type II are vectors of rational functions with common denominator that interpolate a given vector of power series at infinity with maximal order. We are interested in the situation when the approximated vector is given by a pair of Cauchy transforms of smooth complex measures supported on the real line. The convergence properties of the approximants are rather well understood when the supports consist of two disjoint intervals (Angelesco systems) or two intervals that coincide under the condition that the ratio of the measures is a restriction of the Cauchy transfo…
Motivated by the Novikov equation and its peakon problem, we propose a new mixed type Hermite--Padé approximation whose unique solution is a sequence of polynomials constructed with the help of Pfaffians. These polynomials belong to the family of recently proposed partial-skew-orthogonal polynomials. The relevance of partial-skew-orthogonal polynomials is especially visible in the approximation problem germane to the Novikov peakon problem so that we obtain explicit inverse formulae in terms of Pfaffians by reformulating the inverse spectral problem for the Novikov multipeakons. Furthermore, w…
We develop an underlying relationship between the theory of rational approximations and that of isomonodromic deformations. We show that a certain duality in Hermite's two approximation problems for functions leads to the Schlesinger transformations, i.e. transformations of a linear differential equation shifting its characteristic exponents by integers while keeping its monodromy invariant. Since approximants and remainders are described by block-Toeplitzs determinants, one can clearly understand the determinantal structure in isomonodromic deformations. We demonstrate our method in a certain…
Type I Hermite--Padé polynomials for a set of functions $f_0, f_1, ..., f_s$ at infinity, $Q_{n,0}$, $Q_{n,1}$, ..., $Q_{n,s}$, is defined by the asymptotic condition $$ R_n(z):=\bigl(Q_{n,0}f_0+Q_{n,1}f_1+Q_{n,2}f_2+...+Q_{n,s}f_s\bigr)(z) =\mathcal O (\frac1{z^{s n+s}}), \quad z\to\infty, $$ with the degree of all $Q_{n,k}\leq n$. We describe an approach for finding the asymptotic zero distribution of these polynomials as $n\to \infty$ under the assumption that all $f_j$'s are semiclassical, i.e. their logarithmic derivatives are rational functions. In this situation $R_n$ and $Q_{n,k}f_k$ s…
K. Mahler introduced the concept of perfect systems in the theory of simultaneous Hermite-Padé approximation of analytic functions. Recently, we proved that Nikishin systems, generated by measures with bounded support and non-intersecting consecutive supports contained on the real line, are perfect. Here, we prove that they are also perfect when the supports of the generating measures are unbounded or touch at one point. As an application, we give a version of Stieltjes' theorem in the context of simultaneous Hermite-Padé approximation.
In this paper we study linear and non-linear Fourier-Padé approximation for Angelesco systems of functions. This construction is similar to that of Hermite-Padé approximation. Instead of considering power series expansions of the functions in the system, we take their expansion in a series of orthogonal polynomials.
Let $\mathbb{R}=(-\infty,\infty)$, and let $Q\in C^1(\mathbb{R}): \mathbb{R}\rightarrow \mathbb{R^+}=[0,\infty)$ be an even function, which is an exponent. We consider the weight $w_ρ(x)=|x|^ρ e^{-Q(x)}$, $ρ\geqslant 0$, $x\in \mathbb{R}$, and then we can construct the orthonormal polynomials $p_{n}(w_ρ^2;x)$ of degree n for $w_ρ^2(x)$. In this paper we obtain $L_p$-convergence theorems of even order Hermite-Fejér interpolation polynomials at the zeros $\left\{x_{k,n,ρ}\right\}_{k=1}^n$ of $p_{n}(w_ρ^2;x)$.
We consider a quaternionic analogue of the univariate complex Hermite polynomials and study some of their analytic properties in some detail. We obtain their integral representation as well as the operational formulas of exponential and Burchnall types they obey. We show that they form an orthogonal basis of both the slice and the full Hilbert spaces on the quaternions with respect to the Gaussian measure. We also provide different types of generating functions. Remarkably identities, including quadratic recurrence formulas of Nielsen type are derived.
Recently there has been a renewed interest in an extension of the notion of orthogonal polynomials known as multiple orthogonal polynomials. This notion comes from simultaneous rational approximation (Hermite-Pade approximation) of a system of several functions. We describe seven families of multiple orthogonal polynomials which have he same flavor as the very classical orthogonal polynomials of Jacobi, Laguerre and Hermite. We also mention some open research problems and some applications.

We consider sequences of biorthogonal polynomials with respect to a Cauchy type convolution kernel and give the weak and ratio asymptotic of the corresponding sequences of biorthogonal polynomials. The construction is intimately related with a mixed type Hermite-Padé approximation problem whose asymptotic properties is also revealed.
Considering functions $ f $ on $ \R^n $ for which both $ f $ and $ \hat{f} $ are bounded by the Gaussian $ e^{-{1/2}a|x|^2}, 0 < a < 1 $ we show that their Fourier-Hermite coefficients have exponential decay. Optimal decay is obtained for $ O(n)-$finite functions thus extending the one dimensional result of Vemuri.
We consider multiple orthogonal polynomials corresponding to two Macdonald functions (modified Bessel functions of the second kind), with emphasis on the polynomials on the diagonal of the Hermite-Padé table. We give some properties of these polynomials: differential properties, a Rodrigues type formula and explicit formulas for the third order linear recurrence relation.
Here we solve Padé and Prony interpolation problems for the generalized exponential sums with equal weights: $$H_n(z; h)=\fracμ{n}\sum_{k=1}^n h(λ_k z),\quad \text{where}\quad μ,λ_k\in \mathbb{C},$$ and $h$ is a fixed analytic function under few natural assumptions. The interpolation of a function $f$ by $H_n$ is due to properly chosen $μ$ and $\{λ_k\}_{k=1}^n$, which depend on $f$, $h$ and $n$. The sums $H_n$ are related to the $h$-sums and generalized exponential sums, i.e. to $$\mathcal{H}^*_n(z; h)=\sum_{k=1}^n λ_k h(λ_k z)\quad \text{and}\quad\mathcal{H}_n(z; h):=\sum_{k=1}^n μ_k h(λ_k z)…
It is well known that rational approximation theory involves degenerate hypergeometric functions and, in particular, the Padé approximation of the exponential function is closely related to Kummer hypergeometric functions. Recently, in the context of the study of the exponential stability of the trivial solution of delay-differential equations, a new link between the degenerate hypergeometric function and the zeros distribution of the characteristic function associated with linear delay-differential equations was emphasized. Such a link allowed the characterization of a property of time-delay …
In this paper, we construct a new family of q-Hermite polynomials denoted by Hn(x,s|q). Main properties and relations are established and proved. In addition, is deduced a sequence of novel polynomials, Ln(. ,.|q), which appear to be connected with well known (q,n)-exponential functions E{q,n}(.), introduced by Ernst in his work entitled: (A New Method for q-calculus, Uppsala Dissertations in Mathematics, Vol. 25, 2002). Relevant results spread in the literature are retrieved as particular cases. Fourier integral transforms are explicitly computed and discussed. A (q;p)-extension of the Hn(x,s…
Given $K$ arbitrary poles, which are neither necessarily distinct nor bounded, on the extended real line, a corresponding ordered base of rational functions orthogonal with respect to varying exponential weights is constructed: this gives rise to a $K$-fold family of orthogonal rational functions (ORFs). The ORF problem is characterised as a family of $K$ matrix Riemann-Hilbert problems (RHPs) on the extended real line, and a corresponding family of $K$ energy minimisation (variational) problems containing external fields with singular points is formulated, and the existence, uniqueness, and r…
We present a new approach to exponential functions on time scales and to timescale analogues of ordinary differential equations. We describe in detail the Cayley-exponential function and associated trigonometric and hyperbolic functions. We show that the Cayley-exponential is related to implicit midpoint and trapezoidal rules, similarly as delta and nabla exponential functions are related to Euler numerical schemes. Extending these results on any Padé approximants, we obtain Padé-exponential functions. Moreover, the exact exponential function on time scales is defined. Finally, we present appl…
In this paper we study sequences of vector orthogonal polynomials. The vector orthogonality presented here provides a reinterpretation of what is known in the literature as matrix orthogonality. These systems of orthogonal polynomials satisfy three-term recurrence relations with matrix coefficients that do not obey to any type of symmetry. In this sense the vectorial reinterpretation allows us to study a non-symmetric case of the matrix orthogonality. We also prove that our systems of polynomials are indeed orthonormal with respect to a complex measure of orthogonality. Approximation problems …
Properties of certain $q$-orthogonal polynomials are connected to the $q$-oscillator algebra. The Wall and $q$-Laguerre polynomials are shown to arise as matrix elements of $q$-exponentials of the generators in a representation of this algebra. A realization is presented where the continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials form a basis of the representation space. Various identities are interpreted within this model. In particular, the connection formula between the continuous big $q$-Hermite polynomials and the continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials is thus obtained, and two generating functions for thes…
Let $E= A - iB$ be a Hermite-Biehler entire function of exponential type $τ/2$ where $A$ and $B$ are real entire, and consider $dμ(x) = dx/|E(x)|^2$. We show that the sign of the product $A B$ is an extremal signature for the space of functions of exponential type $τ$ with respect to the norm of $L^1(μ)$. This allows us to find best approximations by entire functions of exponential type $τ$ in $L^1(μ)$-norm to certain special functions (e.g., the Gaussian and the Poisson kernel).
We show how one can use Hermite-Padé approximation and little $q$-Jacobi polynomials to construct rational approximants for $ζ_q(2)$. These numbers are $q$-analogues of the well known $ζ(2)$. Here $q=\frac{1}{p}$, with $p$ an integer greater than one. These approximants are good enough to show the irrationality of $ζ_q(2)$ and they allow us to calculate an upper bound for its measure of irrationality: $μ(ζ_q(2))\leq 10π^2/(5π^2-24) \approx 3.8936$. This is sharper than the upper bound given by Zudilin (\textit{On the irrationality measure for a $q$-analogue of $ζ(2)$}, Mat. Sb. \textbf{193} (2…
