Suppose $F$ is a distribution on the half-line $[0,\infty)$. We study the limits of the ratios of tails $\bar{F*F}(x)/\bar{F}(x)$ as $x\to\infty$. We also discuss the classes of distributions ${\mathcal{S}}$, ${\mathcal{S}}(γ)$ and ${\mathcal{S}}^*$.
We bring in this short report (counter -) examples on order to show a difference between tails behavior and Grand Lebesgue Spaces norms for some classes of random variables.
For a fixed positive integer $\;k,\;$ limit laws of linearly normalized $\;k$-th upper order statistics are well known. In this article, a comprehensive study of tail behaviours of limit laws of normalized $k$-th upper order statistics under fixed and random sample sizes is carried out using tail equivalence which leads to some interesting tail behaviours of the limit laws. These lead to definitive answers about their max domains of attraction. Stochastic ordering properties of the limit laws are also studied. The results obtained are not dependent on linear norming and apply to power norming …
We offer in this paper the non-asymptotical pairwise bilateral exact up to multiplicative constants interrelations between the tail behavior, moments (Grand Lebesgue Spaces) norm and Orlicz's norm for random variables (r.v.), which does not satisfy in general case the Cramer's condition.
In this paper, asymptotic behavior of convolution of distributions belonging to two subclasses of distributions with exponential tails are considered, respectively. The precise second-order tail asymptotics of the convolutions are derived under the condition of second-order regular variation.
We obtain a number of new general properties, related to the closedness of the class of long-tailed distributions under convolutions, that are of interest themselves and may be applied in many models that deal with "plus" and/or "max" operations on heavy-tailed random variables. We analyse the closedness property under convolution roots for these distributions. Namely, we introduce two classes of heavy-tailed distributions that are not long-tailed and study their properties. These examples help to provide further insights and, in particular, to show that the properties to be both long-tailed a…
We present explicit estimates of right and left tails and exact (up to universal, multiplicative constants) estimates of tails and moments of hitting times of Bessel processes. The latter estimates are obtained from more general estimates of moments and tails established for convolutions of elementary mixtures of exponential distributions.
In this paper, according to a certain criterion, we divide the exponential distribution class into three subclasses. One of them is closely related to the regular-variation-tailed distribution class, so it is called the semi-regular-variation-tailed distribution class. In the class, although all distributions are not convolution equivalent, they still have some good properties. We give the precise tail asymptotic expression of convolution of these distributions, and prove that the new class is closed under convolution. In addition, we do not need to require the corresponding random variables to…
Let $X$ and $Y$ be two independent random variables with corresponding distributions $F$ and $G$ supported on $[0,\infty)$. The distribution of the product $XY$, which is called the product convolution of $F$ and $G$, is denoted by $H$. In this paper, some suitable conditions about $F $ and $G $ are given, under which the distribution $H$ belongs to the long-tailed distribution class. Here, $F$ is a generalized long-tailed distribution and is not necessarily an exponential distribution. Finally, a series of examples are given to show that the above conditions are satisfied by many distribution…
In the literature, retrial queues with batch arrivals and heavy service times have been studied and the so-called equivalence theorem has been established under the condition that the service time is heavier than the batch size. The equivalence theorem provides the distribution (or tail) equivalence between the total number of customers in the system for the retrial queue and the total number of customers in the corresponding standard (non-retrial) queue. In this paper, under the assumption of regularly varying tails, we eliminate this condition by allowing that the service time can be either …
Let $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ be a sequence of independent random variables (not necessarily identically distributed), and $η$ be a counting random variable independent of this sequence. We obtain sufficient conditions on $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ and $η$ under which the distribution function of the random sum $S_η=ξ_1+ξ_2+\cdots+ξ_η$ belongs to the class of $\mathcal{O}$-exponential distributions.

We study an equivalence of (i) deterministic pathwise statements appearing in the online learning literature (termed \emph{regret bounds}), (ii) high-probability tail bounds for the supremum of a collection of martingales (of a specific form arising from uniform laws of large numbers for martingales), and (iii) in-expectation bounds for the supremum. By virtue of the equivalence, we prove exponential tail bounds for norms of Banach space valued martingales via deterministic regret bounds for the online mirror descent algorithm with an adaptive step size. We extend these results beyond the line…
We consider questions related to the well-known conjecture due to Embrechts and Goldie on the closedness of different classes of heavy- and light-tailed distributions with respect to convolution roots. We show that the class L(γ)\cap OS is not closed under convolution roots related to an infinitely divisible distribution for any γ\ge0, i.e. we provide examples of infinitely divisible distributions belonging to this class such that the corresponding Levy spectral distribution does not. We also prove a similar statement for the class (L(γ)\cap OS)\ S(γ). In order to facilitate our analysis, we e…
We study the behavior of the tail of a measure $μ^{\boxtimes t}$, where $\boxtimes t$ is the $t$-fold free multiplicative convolution power for $t\geq 1$. We focus on the case where $μ$ is a probability measure on the positive half-line with a regularly varying tail i.e. of the form $x^{-α} L(x)$, where $L$ is slowly varying. We obtain a phase transition in the behavior of the tail of $μ^{\boxplus t}$ between regimes $α<1$ and $α>1$. Our main tool is a description of the regularly varying tails of $μ$ in terms of the behavior of the corresponding $S$-transform at $0^-$. We also describe the ta…
Relations between subexponential densities and locally subexponential distributions are discussed. It is shown that the class of subexponential densities is neither closed under convolution roots nor closed under asymptotic equivalence. A remark is given on the closure under convolution roots for the class of convolution equivalent distributions.
Consider a single server system serving a multiclass population. Some popular scheduling policies for such system are the discriminatory processor sharing (DPS), discriminatory random order service (DROS), generalized processor sharing (GPS) and weighted fair queueing (WFQ). In this paper, we propose two classes of policies, namely MPS (multiclass processor sharing) and MROS (multiclass random order service), that generalize the four policies mentioned above. For the special case when the multiclass population arrive according to Poisson processes and have independent and exponential service r…
We show that every symmetric random variable with log-concave tails satisfies the convex infimum convolution inequality with an optimal cost function (up to scaling). As a result, we obtain nearly optimal comparison of weak and strong moments for symmetric random vectors with independent coordinates with log-concave tails.
We consider a single-server GI/GI/1 queueing system with feedback. We assume the service times distribution to be (intermediate) regularly varying. We find the tail asymptotics for a customer's sojourn time in two regimes: the customer arrives in an empty system, and the customer arrives in the system in the stationary regime. In particular, in the case of Poisson input we use the branching processes structure and provide more precise formulae. As auxiliary results, we find the tail asymptotics for the busy period distribution in a single-server queue with an intermediate varying service times…

We show the equivalence of three properties for an infinitely divisible distribution: the subexponentiality of the density, the subexponentiality of the density of its Lévy measure and the tail equivalence between the density and its Lévy measure density, under monotonic-type assumptions on the Lévy measure density. The key assumption is that tail of the Lévy measure density is asymptotic to a non-increasing function or is eventually non-increasing. Our conditions are novel and cover a rather wide class of infinitely divisible distributions. Several significant properties for analyzing the sub…
We re-examine a lower-tail upper bound for the random variable $$X=\prod_{i=1}^{\infty}\min\left\{\sum_{k=1}^iE_k,1\right\},$$ where $E_1,E_2,\ldots\stackrel{iid}\sim\text{Exp}(1)$. This bound has found use in root-finding and seed-finding algorithms for randomly growing trees, and was initially proved as a lemma in the context of the uniform attachment tree model. We first show that $X$ has a useful representation as a compound product of uniform random variables that allows us to determine its moments and refine the existing nonasymptotic bound. Next we demonstrate that the lower-tail probab…
