Michor and Mumford have shown that the distances between planar curves in the simplest metric (not involving derivatives) are identically zero. We consider two conformally equivalent metrics for which the distances between curves are nontrivial. We show that in the case of the simpler of the two metrics, the only minimal geodesics are those corresponding to curve evolution in which the points of the curve move with the same normal speed. An equation for the geodesics and a formula for the sectional curvature are derived; a necessary and sufficient condition for the sectional curvature to be bounded is given.
In the present paper we study pseudo-Riemannian submanifolds which have 3-planar geodesic normal sections. We consider W-curves (helices) on pseudo-Riemannian submanifolds. Finally, we give neccessary and sufficient condition for a normal section to be a W-curve on pseudo-Riemannian submanifolds.
For an arbitrary nondegenerate curve in a pseudo-Riemann\-ian (including Riemannian) 2-manifold, we express the equi-affine curvature with the help of the Frenet (geodesic) curvature of this curve.
J.Eells and L. Lemaire introduced k-harmonic maps, and T. Ichiyama, J. Inoguchi and H.Urakawa showed the first variation formula. In this paper, we describe the ordinary differential equations of $3$-harmonic curves into a Riemannian manifold with constant sectional curvature, and show biharmonic curve is k-harmonic curve $(k\geq 2)$.
We prove the existence of immersed closed curves of constant geodesic curvature in an arbitrary Riemannian 2-sphere for almost every prescribed curvature. To achieve this, we develop a min-max scheme for a weighted length functional.
In this paper, we define f-eikonal helix curves and f-eikonal V_{n}-slant helix curves in a n-dimensional Riemannian manifold. Also, we give the definition of harmonic curvature functions related to f-eikonal helix curves and f-eikonal V_{n}-slant helix curves in a n-dimensional Riemannian manifold. Moreover, we give characterizations for f-eikonal helix curves and f-eikonal V_{n}-slant helix curves by making use of the harmonic curvature functions.
We obtain a characterization of the proximal normal cone to a prox-regular subset of a Riemannian manifold. Moreover, some properties of Bouligand tangent cones to prox-regular sets are described. We prove that for a prox-regular subset S of a Riemannian manifold, the metric projection P_S to S is locally Lipschitz on an open neighborhood of S and it is directionally differentiable at boundary points of S. Finally, a necessary condition for a curve to be a minimizing curve in a prox-regular set is derived.
The equivalence problem of curves with values in a Riemannian manifold, is solved. The domain of validity of Frenet's theorem is shown to be the spaces of constant curvature. For a general Riemannian manifold new invariants must thus be added. There are two important generic classes of curves; namely, Frenet curves and a new class, called curves "in normal position". They coincide in dimensions $\leq 4$ only. A sharp bound for asymptotic stability of differential invariants is obtained, the complete systems of invariants are characterized, and a procedure of generation is presented. Different …
In this paper, we show that any compact K$ä$hler manifold homotopic to a compact Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature admits a K$ä$hler-Einstein metric of general type. Moreover, we prove that, on a compact symplectic manifold $X$ homotopic to a compact Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature, for any almost complex structure $J$ compatible with the symplectic form, there is no non-constant $J$-holomorphic entire curve $f:C \rightarrow X$.
We consider a pseudo-Riemannian metric that changes signature along a smooth curve on a surface, called the discriminant curve. The discriminant curve separates the surface locally into a Riemannian and a Lorentzian domain. We study the local behaviour and properties of geodesics at a point on the discriminant where the isotropic direction is tangent to the discriminant curve.
A magnetic field is defined by the property that its divergence is zero in a three dimensional oriented Riemannian manifold. Each magnetic field generates a magnetic flow whose trajectories are curves called as magnetic curves. In this paper, we give a new variational approach to studies the magnetic flow asociated with the Killing magnetic field in a three dimensional oriented Riemann manifold, And then, we investigate the trajectories of the magnetic fields called as N-magnetic and B-magnetic curves.
In this paper, the Cartan frames and the equi-affine curvatures are described with the help of the Frenet frames and the Frenet curvatures of a non-null and non-degenerate curve in a 3-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold. The constancy of the Frenet curvatures of such a curve always implies the constancy of the equi-affine curvatures. We show that the converse statement does not hold in general. Finally, we study the equi-affine curvatures of null curves in 3-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds, and prove that they are related to their pseudo-torsion.
We classify positively curved Alexandrov spaces of dimension 4 with an isometric circle action up to equivariant homeomorphism, subject to a certain additional condition on the infinitesimal geometry near fixed points which we conjecture is always satisfied. As a corollary, we also classify positively curved Riemannian orbifolds of dimension 4 with an isometric circle action.
Considering Riemannian submersions, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for when sub-Riemannian normal geodesics project to curves of constant first geodesic curvature or constant first and vanishing second geodesic curvatures. We describe a canonical extension of the sub-Riemannian metric and study geometric properties of the obtained Riemannian manifold. This work contains several examples illustrating the results.
This chapter reviews some past and recent developments in shape comparison and analysis of curves based on the computation of intrinsic Riemannian metrics on the space of curves modulo shape-preserving transformations. We summarize the general construction and theoretical properties of quotient elastic metrics for Euclidean as well as non-Euclidean curves before considering the special case of the square root velocity metric for which the expression of the resulting distance simplifies through a particular transformation. We then examine different numerical approaches that have been proposed t…
We deal with irregular curves contained in smooth, closed, and compact surfaces. For curves with finite total intrinsic curvature, a weak notion of parallel transport of tangent vector fields is well-defined in the Sobolev setting. Also, the angle of the parallel transport is a function with bounded variation, and its total variation is equal to an energy functional that depends on the "tangential" component of the derivative of the tantrix of the curve. We show that the total intrinsic curvature of irregular curves agrees with such an energy functional. By exploiting isometric embeddings, the…
We present a method for proving the existence of solutions to a class of one dimensional variational problems. The method is demonstrated by two examples of optimal interpolation problems which are motivated by engineering applications. In each case we prove that the variational problem satisfies the Palais-Smale condition and the existence of a minimal solution and lower bounds for the number of stationary curves then follow.
Shape spaces are fundamental in a variety of applications including image registration, morphing, matching, interpolation, and shape optimization. In this work, we consider two-dimensional shapes represented by triangular meshes of a given connectivity. We show that the collection of admissible configurations representable by such meshes form a smooth manifold. For this manifold of planar triangular meshes we propose a geodesically complete Riemannian metric. It is a distinguishing feature of this metric that it preserves the mesh connectivity and prevents the mesh from degrading along geodesi…
Tractrices of planar curves, in particular, a family of tractrices of a circle, are considered. Some new observations (including arc-length parametrization, Chezaro equation) and corrected reference informations are provided. The article is written in Russian.
In this paper, we systemally study the long time behavior of the curve shortening flow in a closed or non-compact complete locally Riemannian symmetric manifold. Assume that we have a global flow. Then we can exhibit a a limit for the global behavior of the flow. In particular, we show the following results. 1). Let $\mathbf{M}$ be a compact locally symmetric space. If the curve shortening flow exists for infinite time, and $$ \lim_{t\to\infty}L(γ_{t})>0, $$ then for every $n>0$, $$ \lim_{t\to \infty}\sup(|\frac{D^{n}T}{\partial s^{n}}|)=0. $$ In particular, the limiting curve exists and is a …
In this paper, we study planar polygonal curves from the variational methods. We show an unified interpretation of discrete curvatures and the Steiner-type formula by extracting the notion of the discrete curvature vector from the first variation of the length functional. Moreover, we determine the equilibrium curves for the length functional under the area-constraint condition and study their stability.
We consider the following problem: on any given complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, among all curves which have fixed length as well as fixed end-points and tangents at the end-points, minimise the $L^\infty$ norm of the curvature. We show that the solutions of this problem, as well as a wider class of curves, must satisfy a second order ODE system. From this system we obtain some geometric information about the behaviour of the curves.
Metrics on Lie groupoids and differentiable stacks have been introduced recently, extending the Riemannian geometry of manifolds and orbifolds to more general singular spaces. Here we continue that theory, studying stacky curves on Riemannian stacks, measuring their length using stacky metrics, and introducing stacky geodesics. Our main results show that the length of stacky curves measure distances on the orbit space, characterize stacky geodesics as locally minimizing curves, and establish a stacky version of Hopf-Rinow Theorem. We include a concise overview that bypasses nonessential techni…
We study stable surfaces, i.e., second order minima of the area for variations of fixed volume, in sub-Riemannian space forms of dimension $3$. We prove a stability inequality and provide sufficient conditions ensuring instability of volume-preserving area-stationary $C^2$ surfaces with a non-empty singular set of curves. Combined with previous results, this allows to describe any complete, orientable, embedded and stable $C^2$ surface $Σ$ in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ and the sub-Riemannian sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$ of constant curvature $1$. In $\mathbb{H}^1$ we conclude that $Σ$ is a E…
Let $M$ be a graph manifold such that each piece of its JSJ decomposition has the $\Bbb H^2 \times \Bbb R$ geometry. Assume that the pieces are glued by isometries. Then, there exists a complete Riemannian metric on $\Bbb R \times M$ which is an "eventually warped cusp metric" with the sectional curvature $K$ satisfying $-1 \le K <0$. A theorem by Ontaneda then implies that $M$ appears as an end of a 4-dimensional, complete, non-compact Riemannian manifold of finite volume with sectional curvature $K$ satisfying $-1 \le K <0$.
In this paper we study singular points of the Wigner caustic and affine $λ$--equidistants of planar curves based on shapes of these curves. We generalize the Blaschke-Süss theorem on the existence of antipodal pairs of a convex curve.
The secant caustic of a planar curve $M$ is the image of the singular set of the secant map of $M$. We analyse the geometrical properties of the secant caustic of a planar curve, i.e. the number of branches of the secant caustic, the parity of the number of cusps and the number of inflexion points in each branch of this set. In particular, we investigate in detail some of the geometrical properties of the secant caustic of a rosette, i.e. a smooth regular oriented closed curve with non-vanishing curvature.
Motivated by the analogies between the projective and the almost quaternionic geometries, we study the generalized planar curves and mappings. We follow, recover, and extend the classical approach as developed by Mikes and Sinyukov. Then we exploit the impact of the general results in the almost quaternionic geometry. In particular we show, that the natural class of H--planar curves coincides with the class of all geodesics of the so called Weyl connections and preserving this class turns out to be the necessary and sufficient condition on diffeomorphisms to become morphisms of almost quaterni…
In this paper we use a gradient flow to deform closed planar curves to curves with least variation of geodesic curvature in the $L^2$ sense. Given a smooth initial curve we show that the solution to the flow exists for all time and, provided the length of the evolving curve remains bounded, smoothly converges to a multiply-covered circle. Moreover, we show that curves in any homotopy class with initially small $L^3\lVert k_s\rVert_2^2$ enjoy a uniform length bound under the flow, yielding the convergence result in these cases.
We study two aspects of the loop group formulation for isometric immersions with flat normal bundle of space forms. The first aspect is to examine the loop group maps along different ranges of the loop parameter. This leads to various equivalences between global isometric immersion problems among different space forms and pseudo-Riemannian space forms. As a corollary, we obtain a non-immersibility theorem for spheres into certain pseudo-Riemannian spheres and hyperbolic spaces. The second aspect pursued is to clarify the relationship between the loop group formulation of isometric immersions o…
A classical result in Riemannian geometry states that the absolutely continuous curves into a (finite-dimensional) Riemannian manifold form an infinite-dimensional manifold. In the present paper this construction and related results are generalised to absolutely continuous curves with values in a strong Riemannian manifolds. As an application we consider extensions of the square root velocity transform (SRVT) framework for shape analysis. Computations in this framework frequently lead to curves which leave the shape space (of smooth curves), and are only contained in a completion. In the vecto…
The method for approximation of planar curve by circular arcs with length preservation, proposed by I.Kh. Sabitov and A.V. Slovesnov, is analyzed. We extend the applicability of the method, and consider some corollaries, not related to the approximation problem. Inequalities for the length of a convex spiral arc with prescribed two-point $G^1$ or $G^2$ Hermite data are derived. We propose a scheme of computer modelling to explore properties of planar curves. As an example, closeness of ovals is tested, leading to some conjectures about closeness conditions.
Given a pair of real functions $(k,f)$, we study the conditions they must satisfy for $k+λf$ to be the curvature in the arc-length of a closed planar curve for all real $λ$. Several equivalent conditions are pointed out, certain periodic behaviours are shown as essential and a family of such pairs is explicitely constructed. The discrete counterpart of the problem is also studied. Finally, the characterization obtained is used to show that a sufficient analogue of the 4-vertex theorem cannot be developed.
Counterexamples to continuity of optimal transportation on Riemannian manifolds with everywhere positive sectional curvature are provided. These examples show that the condition A3w of Ma, Trudinger, & Wang is not guaranteed by positivity of sectional curvature.
In this paper, I shall demonstrate that sufficiently high-dimensional closed positively-curved Riemannian manifolds are either diffeomorphic to a spherical space form, or isometric to a locally compact rank one symmetric space. This surprising classification of positively-curved Riemannian manifolds results from combining the concentration of measures of Grassmanians with Brendle-Schoen pointwise (weakly)- 1/4-pinching Theorem. A direct corollary of the main result within this paper is the answering of the long standing Hopf Conjecture in sufficiently high dimensions.
We prove Gronwall-type estimates for the distance of integral curves of smooth vector fields on a Riemannian manifold. Such estimates are of central importance for all methods of solving ODEs in a verified way, i.e., with full control of roundoff errors. Our results may therefore be seen as a prerequisite for the generalization of such methods to the setting of Riemannian manifolds.

In this article we extend the computational geometric curve reconstruction approach to curves in Riemannian manifolds. We prove that the minimal spanning tree, given a sufficiently dense sample, correctly reconstructs the smooth arcs and further closed and simple curves in Riemannian manifolds. The proof is based on the behaviour of the curve segment inside the tubular neighbourhood of the curve. To take care of the local topological changes of the manifold, the tubular neighbourhood is constructed in consideration with the injectivity radius of the underlying Riemannian manifold. We also pres…
We define a computable topological invariant $μ(γ)$ for generic closed planar regular curves $γ$, which gives an effective lower bound for the number of inflection points on a given generic closed planar curve. Using it, we classify the topological types of locally convex curves (i.e. closed planar regular curves without inflections) whose numbers of crossings are less than or equal to five. Moreover, we discuss the relationship between the number of double tangents and the invariant $μ(γ)$ on a given $γ$.
Let LM be the semigroup of non-degenerate based loops with a fixed initial/final frame in a Riemannian manifold M of dimension at least three. We compare the topology of LM to that of the loop space Omega FTM on the bundle of frames in the tangent bundle of M. We show that Omega FTM is the group completion of LM, and prove that it is obtained by localizing LM with respect to adding a "small twist".
We uncover some connections between the topology of a complete Riemannian surface M and the minimum number of vertices, i.e., critical points of geodesic curvature, of closed curves in M. In particular we show that the space forms with finite fundamental group are the only surfaces in which every simple closed curve has more than two vertices. Further we characterize the simply connected space forms as the only surfaces in which every closed curve bounding a compact immersed surface has more than two vertices.
We show that in analytic sub-Riemannian manifolds of rank 2 satisfying a commutativity condition spiral-like curves are not length minimizing near the center of the spiral. The proof relies upon the delicate construction of a competing curve.
To what extent does the eigenvalue spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a compact Riemannian manifold determine the geometry of the manifold? We give examples of isospectral manifolds with different local geometry including continuous families of isospectral negatively curved manifolds with boundary as well as various pairs of manifolds. The latter illustrate that the spectrum does not determine whether a manifold with boundary has negative curvature, whether it has constant Ricci curvature, and whether it has parallel curvature tensor, and the spectrum does not determine whether a clo…
In this paper we prove a universal inequality describing the asymptotic behavior of support points for planar continuous curves. As corollaries we get an analogous result for tangent points of differentiable planar curves and some (partially known) assertions on the asymptotic of the mean value points for various classical analytic theorems. Some open questions are formulated.
We introduce a notion of geodesic curvature $k_ζ$ for a smooth horizontal curve $ζ$ in a three-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifold, measuring how much a horizontal curve is far from being a geodesic. We show that the geodesic curvature appears as the first corrective term in the Taylor expansion of the sub-Riemannian distance between two points on a unit speed horizontal curve $$ d_{SR}^2( ζ(t),ζ(t+ε))=ε^2-\frac{k_ζ^2(t)}{720} ε^6 +o(ε^{6}). $$ The sub-Riemannian distance is not smooth on the diagonal, hence the result contains the existence of such an asymptotics. This can be seen as …
We consider two natural problems arising in geometry which are equivalent to the local solvability of specific equations of Monge-Ampere type. These two problems are: the local isometric embedding problem for two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, and the problem of locally prescribed Gaussian curvature for surfaces in R^3. We prove a general local existence result for a large class of Monge-Ampere equations in the plane, and obtain as corollaries the existence of regular solutions to both problems, in the case that the Gaussian curvature vanishes to arbitrary finite order on a single smooth cu…
