We study stable surfaces, i.e., second order minima of the area for variations of fixed volume, in sub-Riemannian space forms of dimension $3$. We prove a stability inequality and provide sufficient conditions ensuring instability of volume-preserving area-stationary $C^2$ surfaces with a non-empty singular set of curves. Combined with previous results, this allows to describe any complete, orientable, embedded and stable $C^2$ surface $Σ$ in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ and the sub-Riemannian sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$ of constant curvature $1$. In $\mathbb{H}^1$ we conclude that $Σ$ is a Euclidean plane, a Pansu sphere or congruent to the hyperbolic paraboloid $t=xy$. In $\mathbb{S}^3$ we deduce that $Σ$ is one of the Pansu spherical surfaces discovered in [28]. As a consequence, such spheres are the unique $C^2$ solutions to the sub-Riemannian isoperimetric problem in $\mathbb{S}^3$.
We prove the instability of some families of Riemannian manifolds with non-trivial real Killing spinors. These include the invariant Einstein metrics on the Aloff-Wallach spaces $N_{k, l}={\rm SU}(3)/i_{k, l}(S^{1})$ (which are all nearly ${\rm G}_2$ except $N_{1,0}$), and Sasaki Einstein circle bundles over certain irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces. We also prove the instability of most of the simply connected non-symmetric compact homogeneous Einstein spaces of dimensions $5, 6, $ and $7$, including the strict nearly Kähler ones (except ${\rm G}_2/{\rm SU}(3)$).
We consider a column of a rotating stationary surface in Euclidean space. We obtain a value $l_0>0$ in such way that if the length $l$ of column satisfies $l>l_0$, then the surface is instable. This extends, in some sense, previous results due to Plateau and Rayleigh for columns of surfaces with constant mean curvature.
We prove nonexistence of nonconstant local minimizers for a class of functionals, which typically appears in the scalar two-phase field model, over a smooth N-dimensional Riemannian manifold without boundary with non-negative Ricci curvature. Conversely for a class of surfaces possessing a simple closed geodesic along which the Gauss curvature is negative we prove existence of nonconstant local minimizers for the same class of functionals.
A celebrated result due to Poincaré affirms that a closed non-degenerate minimizing geodesic $γ$ on an oriented Riemannian surface is hyperbolic. Starting from this classical theorem, our first main result is a general instability criterion for timelike and spacelike closed semi-Riemannian geodesics on a (non)oriented manifold. A key role is played by the spectral index, a new topological invariant that we define through the spectral flow (being the Morse index truly infinite) of a path of selfadjoint Fredholm operators. A major step in the proof of this result is a em new spectral flow formul…
We show that, for odd $d$, the $L^{\frac{d+2}2}$ bounds of Sogge and Xi for the Nikodym maximal function over manifolds of constant sectional curvature, are unstable with respect to metric perturbation, in the spirit of the work of Sogge and Minicozzi. A direct consequence is the instability of the bounds for the corresponding oscillatory integral operator. Furthermore, we extend our construction to show that the same phenomenon appears for any $d$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with a local totally geodesic submanifold of dimension $\lceil{\frac{d+1}2}\rceil$ if $d\ge 3$. In contrast, Sogge'…
We provide a general contractibility criterion for subsets of Riemannian metrics on the disc. For instance, this result applies to the space of metrics that have positive Gauss curvature and make the boundary circle convex (or geodesic). The same conclusion is not known in any dimension $n\geq 3$, and (by analogy with the closed case) is actually expected to be false for many values of $n\geq 4$.

We study the linear stability of Einstein metrics of Riemannian submersion type. First, we derive a general instability condition for such Einstein metrics and provide some applications. Then we study instability arising from Riemannian product structures on the base. As an application, we estimate the coindex of the Einstein metrics constructed in \cite{WZ90} and \cite{Wan92}. Finally, we investigate more closely the linear stability of Einstein metrics from circle bundle constructions and obtain a rigidity result for linearly stable Einstein metrics of this type.
We prove some estimates on the spectrum of the Laplacian of the total space of a Riemannian submersion in terms of the spectrum of the Laplacian of the base and the geometry of the fibers. When the fibers of the submersions are compact and minimal, we prove that the total space is discrete if and only if the base is discrete. When the fibers are not minimal, we prove a discreteness criterion for the total space in terms of the relative growth of the mean curvature of the fibers and the mean curvature of the geodesic spheres in the base. We discuss in particular the case of warped products.
We provide the first known family of examples of integrable homogeneous sub-Riemannian structures admitting strictly abnormal geodesics. These examples were obtained through the analysis of the equivalence problem for sub-Riemannian Engel structures. We formulate a criterion of strict abnormality in terms of structure functions of a canonical frame on a sub-Riemannian Engel manifold as well as estimates on conjugate times.
We study the spectrum of the Dirac operator $D$ on pseudo-Riemannian spin manifolds of signature $(p,q)$, considered as an unbounded operator in the Hilbert space $L^2_ξ(S)$. The definition of $L^2_ξ(S)$ involves the choice of a $p$-dimensional time-like subbundle $ξ\subset TM$. We establish a sufficient criterion for the spectra of $D$ induced by two maximal time-like subbundles $ξ_1,ξ_2\subset TM$ to be equal. If the base manifold $M$ is compact, the spectrum does not depend on $ξ$ at all. We then proceed by explicitely computing the full spectrum of $D$ for $\mathbb R^{p,q}$, the flat torus…
In this work, we study the stability of Hopf vector fields on Lorentzian Berger spheres as critical points of the energy, the volume and the generalized energy. In order to do so, we construct a family of vector fields using the simultaneous eigenfunctions of the Laplacian and of the vertical Laplacian of the sphere. The Hessians of the functionals are negative when they act on these particular vector fields and then Hopf vector fields are unstable. Moreover, we use this technique to study some of the open problems in the Riemannian case.
We give a geometric criterion which shows p-parabolicity of a class of submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold, with controlled second fundamental form, for p bigger or equal than 2.
Improving a result of Eschenburg and Kim we give a criterion for semisimplicity of pseudo-Riemannian extrinsic symmetric spaces in terms of the shape operator with respect to the mean curvature vector.
We study the manifold of all Riemannian metrics over a closed, finite-dimensional manifold. In particular, we investigate the topology on the manifold of metrics induced by the distance function of the L^2 Riemannian metric - so called because it induces an L^2 topology on each tangent space. It turns out that this topology on the tangent spaces gives rise to an L^1-type topology on the manifold of metrics itself. We study this new topology and its completion, which agrees homeomorphically with the completion of the L^2 metric. We also give a user-friendly criterion for convergence (with respe…
We construct homogeneous flat pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with non-abelian fundamental group. In the compact case, all homogeneous flat pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are complete and have abelian linear holonomy group. To the contrary, we show that there do exist non-compact and non-complete examples, where the linear holonomy is non-abelian, starting in dimensions $\geq 8$, which is the lowest possible dimension. We also construct a complete flat pseudo-Riemannian homogeneous manifold of dimension 14 with non-abelian linear holonomy. Furthermore, we derive a criterion for the properness of the …
We prove a criterion for an isometric action of a Lie group on a Riemannian manifold to be polar. From this criterion, it follows that an action with a fixed point is polar if and only if the slice representation at the fixed point is polar and the section is the tangent space of an embedded totally geodesic submanifold. We apply this to obtain a classification of polar actions with a fixed point on symmetric spaces.
I study Gromov-Hausdorff limits of complex curves endowed with singular flat metrics of constant diameter. I formulate a criterion that the limit is collapsed in terms of a certain piecewise affine weight function on the dual intersection complex of a semi-stable model of the degeneration introduced by Kontsevich and Soibelman. I describe the collapsed and non-collapsed limits, which are, respectively, metric graphs and finite collections of complex curves with flat metrics glued along finitely many points. I show that the collapsed limit of any positive genus can occur.
A three-dimensional Riemannian manifold has locally 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 or none independent Killing vectors. We present an explicit algorithm for computing dimension of the infinitesimal isometry algebra. It branches according to the values of curvature invariants. These are relative differential invariants computed via curvature, but they are not scalar polynomial Weyl invariants. We compare our obstructions to the existence of Killing vectors with the known existence criteria due to Singer, Kerr and others.
Let $σ>1$ and let $M$ be a complete Riemannian manifold. In a recent work [9], Grigor$^{\prime}$yan and Sun proved that a pointwise upper bound of volume growth is sufficient for uniqueness of nonnegative solutions of elliptic inequality $$(*)\quad\qquad\qquad\qquad Δu(x)+u^σ(x)\leq 0,\qquad x\in M.\quad\qquad \qquad\qquad $$ In this note, we improve their result to that an \emph{integral condition} on volume growth implies the same uniqueness of ($*$). It is inspired by the well-known Varopoulos-Grigor$^{\prime}$yan's criterion for parabolicity of $M$.
We use a construction which we call generalized cylinders to give a new proof of the fundamental theorem of hypersurface theory. It has the advantage of being very simple and the result directly extends to semi-Riemannian manifolds and to embeddings into spaces of constant curvature. We also give a new way to identify spinors for different metrics and to derive the variation formula for the Dirac operator. Moreover, we show that generalized Killing spinors for Codazzi tensors are restrictions of parallel spinors. Finally, we study the space of Lorentzian metrics and give a criterion when two L…
Riemannian geometrical tools, such as Ricci collineations and Killing symmetries, so often used in Einstein general theory of gravitation are here applied to plasma physics to build magnetic surfaces from Einstein plasma metrics used in tokamak devices. It is shown that the Killing symmetries are constrains the Einstein magnetic surfaces while the Killing vectors are built in terms of the displacement of the toroidal surface. The pressure is computed by applying these constraints to the pressure equations in tokamaks. A method, based on the sign of the only nontrivial constant Riemann curvatur…
