We prove Gronwall-type estimates for the distance of integral curves of smooth vector fields on a Riemannian manifold. Such estimates are of central importance for all methods of solving ODEs in a verified way, i.e., with full control of roundoff errors. Our results may therefore be seen as a prerequisite for the generalization of such methods to the setting of Riemannian manifolds.
In the paper we prove integral formulae for a Riemannian manifold endowed with $k>2$ orthogonal complementary distributions, which generalize well-known formula for $k=2$ and give applications to splitting and isometric immersions of Riemannian manifolds, in particular, multiply warped products, and to hypersurfaces with $k>2$ distinct principal curvatures of constant multiplicities.
In this paper we show that, under some curvature assumptions the integral of distance function on a compact Riemannian manifold is bounded below by the product of diameter, volume and a constant only depending on the dimension.
For a Riemannian $G$-structure, we compute the divergence of the vector field induced by the intrinsic torsion. Applying the Stokes theorem, we obtain the integral formula on a closed oriented Riemannian manifold, which we interpret in certain cases. We focus on almost harmitian and almost contact metric structures.
In this paper, we continue to study some applications with respect to a Reilly type integral formula associated with the $ϕ$-Laplacian. Some inequalities of Brascamp-Lieb type and Colesanti type are provided.
In this article, we deduce a series of integral formulas for a foliated sub-Riemannian manifold, which is a new geometric concept denoting a Riemannian manifold equipped with a distribution ${\mathcal D}$ and a foliation ${\mathcal F}$, whose tangent bundle is a subbundle of ${\mathcal D}$. Our integral formulas generalize some results for foliated Riemannian manifolds and involve the shape operators of ${\mathcal F}$ with respect to normals in ${\mathcal D}$ and the curvature tensor of induced connection on ${\mathcal D}$. The formulas also include arbitrary functions $f_j\ (0\le j<\dim{\math…
We study variational problems for integral invariants, which are defined as integrations of invariant functions of the second fundamental form, of a smooth map between pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. We derive the first variational formulae for integral invariants defined from invariant homogeneous polynomials of degree two. Among these integral invariants, we show that the Euler-Lagrange equation of the Chern-Federer energy functional is reduced to a second order PDE. Then we give some examples of Chern-Federer submanifolds in Riemannian space forms.
In this article, we prove a series of integral formulae for a codimension-one foliated sub-Riemannian manifold, i.e., a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ equipped with a distribution ${\mathcal D}=T{\mathcal F}\oplus\,{\rm span}(N)$, where ${\mathcal F}$ is a foliation of $M$ and $N$ a unit vector field $g$-orthogonal to ${\mathcal F}$. Our integral formulas involve $r$th mean curvatures of ${\mathcal F}$, Newton transformations of the shape operator of ${\mathcal F}$ with respect to $N$ and the curvature tensor of induced connection on ${\mathcal D}$ and generalize some known integral formulas (due…
This article shows that under locally uniformly integral bounds of the negative part of Ricci curvature the heat kernel admits a Gaussian upper bound for small times. This provides general assumptions on the geometry of a manifold such that certain function spaces are in the Kato class. Additionally, the results imply bounds on the first Betti number.
If the Killing vector field in a Riemannian manifold is the gradient of a smooth real valued function, then it is called Killing potential. In this paper we have deduced a necessary condition for the existence of Killing potential in a complete Riemannian manifold. Yau proved the Liouville theorem of harmonic function in a Riemannian manifold using gradient estimation and after that many authors have generalized this concept and investigated various types of Liouville theorems of harmonic functions. In this article we have also proved a Liouville theorem in integral form of harmonic functions …
We describe all pseudo-Riemannian metrics on closed surfaces whose geodesic flows admit nontrivial integrals quadratic in momenta. As an application, we solve the Beltrami problem on closed surfaces, prove the nonexistence of quadratically-superintegrable metrics of nonconstant curvature on closed surfaces, and prove the two-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian version of the projective Obata conjecture.
We investigate the integral conditions to extend the mean curvature flow in a Riemannian manifold. We prove that the mean curvature flow solution with finite total mean curvature on a finite time interval $[0,T)$ can be extended over time $T$. Moreover, we show that the condition is optimal in some sense.
We derive new integral estimates on substatic manifolds with boundary of horizon type, naturally arising in General Relativity. In particular, we generalize to this setting an identity due to Magnanini-Poggesi leading to the Alexandrov Theorem in the Euclidean space and improve on a Heintze-Karcher type inequality due to Li-Xia. Our method relies on the introduction of a new vector field with nonnegative divergence, generalizing to this setting the P-function technique of Weinberger.
Let $\X\simeq G/K$ be a Riemannian symmetric space of non-compact type, $\widetilde \X$ its Oshima compactification, and $(π,\mathrm{C}(\widetilde \X))$ the regular representation of $G$ on $\widetilde \X$. We study integral operators on $\widetilde \X$ of the form $π(f)$, where $f$ is a rapidly falling function on $G$, and characterize them within the framework of pseudodifferential operators, describing the singular nature of their kernels. In particular, we consider the holomorphic semigroup generated by a strongly elliptic operator associated to the representation $π$, as well as its resol…
In this paper, we consider the non-linear general $p$-Laplacian equation $Δ_{p,f}u+F(u)=0$ for a smooth function $F$ on smooth metric measure spaces. Assume that a Sobolev inequality holds true on $M$ and an integral Ricci curvature is small, we first prove a local gradient estimate for the equation. Then, as its applications, we prove several Liouville type results on manifolds with lower bounds of Ricci curvature. We also derive new local gradient estimates provided that the integral Ricci curvature is small enough.
We describe all pseudo-Riemannian metrics on closed surfaces whose geodesic flows admit nontrivial integrals quadratic in momenta. As an application, we solve the Beltrami problem on closed surfaces and prove the nonexistence of quadratically-superintegrable metrics of nonconstant curvature on closed surfaces
The regularity of limit spaces of Riemannian manifolds with L^p curvature bounds, $p > n/2$, is investigated under no apriori non-collapsing assumption. A regular subset, defined by a local volume growth condition for a limit measure, is shown to carry the structure of a Riemannian manifold. One consequence of this is a compactness theorem for Riemannian manifolds with $L^p$ curvature bounds and an a priori volume growth assumption in the pointed Cheeger-Gromov topology. A different notion of convergence is also studied, which replaces the exhaustion by balls in the pointed Cheeger-Gromov topo…
We prove existence and partial regularity of integral rectifiable $m$-dimensional varifolds minimizing functionals of the type $\int |H|^p$ and $\int |A|^p$ in a given Riemannian $n$-dimensional manifold $(N,g)$, $2\leq m<n$ and $p>m$, under suitable assumptions on $N$ (in the end of the paper we give many examples of such ambient manifolds). To this aim we introduce the following new tools: some monotonicity formulas for varifolds in $\mathbb{R}^S$ involving $\int |H|^p$, to avoid degeneracy of the minimizer, and a sort of isoperimetric inequality to bound the mass in terms of the mentioned f…
We obtain sharp quantitative Laplacian upper and lower estimates under no assumption on curvatures. As a result, we derive quantitative Laplacian, area and volume comparison theorems for tubes in Riemannian and Kähler manifolds under weak integral curvature assumptions. We also give some applications, such as a general Bonnet-Myers theorem and Cheng's eigenvalue estimate under weak integral curvature assumptions.
We study the geodesic X-ray transform $I_Γ$ of tensor fields on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with non-necessarily convex boundary and with possible conjugate points. We assume that $I_Γ$ is known for geodesics belonging to an open set $Γ$ with endpoint on the boundary. We prove generic s-injectivity and a stability estimate under some topological assumptions and under the condition that for any $(x,ξ)\in T^*M$, there is a geodesic without conjugate points in $Γ$ through $x$ normal to $ξ$.
In this paper we provide an integral representation of the fractional Laplace-Beltrami operator for general riemannian manifolds which has several interesting applications. We give two different proofs, in two different scenarios, of essentially the same result. One of them deals with compact manifolds with or without boundary, while the other approach treats the case of riemannian manifolds without boundary whose Ricci curvature is uniformly bounded below.
Consider a Riemannian symmetric space $X= G/K$ of non-compact type, where $G$ denotes a connected, real, semi-simple Lie group with finite center, and $K$ a maximal compact subgroup of $G$. Let $\widetilde X$ be its Oshima compactification, and $(π,\mathrm{C}(\widetilde X))$ the regular representation of $G$ on $\widetilde X$. In this paper, a regularized trace for the convolution operators $π(f)$ is defined, yielding a distribution on $G$ which can be interpreted as global character of $π$. In case that $f$ has compact support in a certain set of transversal elements, this distribution is a l…
We use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the triangle comparison theorems of Rauch and Toponogov to show that on compact Riemann surfaces of negative curvature period integrals of eigenfunctions $e_λ$ over geodesics go to zero at the rate of $O((\logλ)^{-1/2})$ if $λ$ are their frequencies. As discussed in \cite{CSPer}, no such result is possible in the constant curvature case if the curvature is $\ge0$. Notwithstanding, we also show that these bounds for period integrals are valid provided that integrals of the curvature over all geodesic balls of radius $r\le 1$ are pinched from above by $-δr^N$ …
Following Feynman's prescription for constructing a path integral representation of the propagator of a quantum theory, a short-time approximation to the propagator for imaginary time, N=1 supersymmetric quantum mechanics on a compact, even-dimensional Riemannian manifold is constructed. The path integral is interpreted as the limit of products, determined by a partition of a finite time interval, of this approximate propagator. The limit under refinements of the partition is shown to converge uniformly to the heat kernel for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on forms. A version of the steepest de…
We study a quantum system in a Riemannian manifold M on which a Lie group G acts isometrically. The path integral on M is decomposed into a family of path integrals on a quotient space Q=M/G and the reduced path integrals are completely classified by irreducible unitary representations of G. It is not necessary to assume that the action of G on M is either free or transitive. Hence the quotient space M/G may have orbifold singularities. Stratification geometry, which is a generalization of the concept of principal fiber bundle, is necessarily introduced to describe the path integral on M/G. Us…
Principal Component Analysis can be performed over small domains of an embedded Riemannian manifold in order to relate the covariance analysis of the underlying point set with the local extrinsic and intrinsic curvature. We show that the volume of domains on a submanifold of general codimension, determined by the intersection with higher-dimensional cylinders and balls in the ambient space, have asymptotic expansions in terms of the mean and scalar curvatures. Moreover, we propose a generalization of the classical third fundamental form to general submanifolds and prove that the eigenvalue dec…
After analyzing renormalization schemes on a Poincaré-Einstein manifold, we study the renormalized integrals of scalar Riemannian invariants. The behavior of the renormalized volume is well-known, and we show any scalar Riemannian invariant renormalizes similarly. We consider characteristic forms and their behavior under a variation of the Poincaré-Einstein structure, and obtain, from the renormalized integral of the Pfaffian, an extension of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem.
We establish a few formulas that compute the volume of the zero-set (or nodal set) of a function on a compact Riemannian manifold as integrals of functionals of the function and its derivatives.
Inspired by the Gromov-Hausdorff distance, we define the intrinsic flat distance between oriented $m$ dimensional Riemannian manifolds with boundary by isometrically embedding the manifolds into a common metric space, measuring the flat distance between them and taking an infimum over all isometric embeddings and all common metric spaces. This is made rigorous by applying Ambrosio-Kirchheim's extension of Federer-Fleming's notion of integral currents to arbitrary metric spaces. We prove the intrinsic flat distance between two compact oriented Riemannian manifolds is zero iff they have an orien…
We consider complete asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds that are the graphs of smooth functions over $\mathbb R^n$. By recognizing the scalar curvature of such manifolds as a divergence, we express the ADM mass as an integral of the product of the scalar curvature and a nonnegative potential function, thus proving the Riemannian positive mass theorem in this case. If the graph has convex horizons, we also prove the Riemannian Penrose inequality by giving a lower bound to the boundary integrals using the Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality.
In this paper, we study the weak compactness of the set of conformal metrics in any Riemann surface without boundary whose Calabi energy and area are uniformly bounded. We prove that for any sequence of such metrics, there alwasy exists a subsequence which converges in H\sp{2,2}_\sb{loc} everywhere except a finite number of bubble points. Blowup analysis near bubble shows that the bubble on bubble phenomenon occurs. The limit metric gives rise to a tree structure decomposition, where each node in the tree represents a limit metric of a subsequence at that stage while the edge of the tree struc…
Given a compact manifold with boundary with unknown Riemannian metric. The problem is to reconstruct the metric in a class of conformal metrics from knowledge of lengths of all closed geodesics (kinematic data). An integral inequality is stated which implies uniqueness and stability for this problem. If the conformal class is not known a unique reconstruction is not possible since of shortage of information. It is proved that the list of all geodesic lengths is sufficient for unique determination of a Riemannian metric in a compact surface with boundary up to an automorphism which fix the boun…
Let $M$ be a closed manifold which admits a foliation structure $\mathcal{F}$ of codimension $q\geq 2$ and a bundle-like metric $g_0$. Let $[g_0]_B$ be the space of bundle-like metrics which differ from $g_0$ only along the horizontal directions by a multiple of a positive basic function. Assume $Y$ is a transverse conformal vector field and the mean curvature of the leaves of $(M,\mathcal{F},g_0)$ vanishes. We show that the integral $\int_MY(R^T_{g^T})dμ_g$ is independent of the choice of $g\in [g_0]_B$, where $g^T$ is the transverse metric induced by $g$ and $R^T$ is the transverse scalar cu…
We obtain a comparison formula for integrals of mean curvatures of Riemannian hypersurfaces, via Reilly's identities. As applications we derive several geometric inequalities for a convex hypersurface $Γ$ in a Cartan-Hadamard manifold $M$. In particular we show that the first mean curvature integral of a convex hypersurface $γ$ nested inside $Γ$ cannot exceed that of $Γ$, which leads to a sharp lower bound in dimension $3$ for the total first mean curvature of $Γ$ in terms of the volume it bounds in $M$. This monotonicity property is extended to all mean curvature integrals when $γ$ is paralle…
This is the fourth in a series of papers where we prove a conjecture of Deser and Schwimmer regarding the algebraic structure of ``global conformal invariants''; these are defined to be conformally invariant integrals of geometric scalars. The conjecture asserts that the integrand of any such integral can be expressed as a linear combination of a local conformal invariant, a divergence and of the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet integrand. The present paper lays out the second half of this entire work: The second half proves certain purely algebraic statements regarding local Riemannian invariants; these we…
We provide integral curvature bounds for compact Riemannian manifolds that allow isometric immersions into a Euclidean space with low codimension in terms of the Betti numbers.
Integral formulae for foliated Riemannian manifolds provide obstructions for existence of foliations or compact leaves of them with given geometric properties. This paper continues our recent study and presents new integral formulae and their applications for codimension-one foliated Randers spaces. The goal is a generalization of Reeb's formula (that the total mean curvature of the leaves is zero) and its companion (that twice total second mean curvature of the leaves equals to the total Ricci curvature in the normal direction). We also extend results by Brito, Langevin and Rosenberg (that to…
Under the assumption of the uniform local Sobolev inequality, it is proved that Riemannian metrics with an absolute Ricci curvature bound and a small Riemannian curvature integral bound can be smoothed to having a sectional curvature bound. This partly extends previous a priori estimates of Ye Li (J. Geom. Anal. 17 (2007) 495-511; Advances in Mathematics 223 (2010) 1924-1957).
Sub-Riemannian cubics are a generalisation of Riemannian cubics to a sub-Riemannian manifold. Cubics are curves which minimise the integral of the norm squared of the covariant acceleration. Sub-Riemannian cubics are cubics which are restricted to move in a horizontal subspace of the tangent space. When the sub-Riemannian manifold is also a Lie group, sub-Riemannian cubics correspond to what we call a sub-Riemannian Lie quadratic in the Lie algebra. The present article studies sub-Riemannian Lie quadratics in the case of $\mathfrak{su}(2)$, focusing on the long term dynamics.
Integral formulae for foliated Riemannian manifolds provide obstructions for existence of foliations or compact leaves of them with given geometric properties. Recently, we associated a new Riemannian metric to a codimension-one foliated Finsler space and proved integral formulae for general and for Randers spaces. In the paper, we study this metric for a wider class of codimension-one foliated $(α,β)$-spaces and embody it in a set of metrics that can be viewed as a perturbed metric associated with $α$. For such metrics we calculate the Weingarten operator of the leaves and deduce the Reeb typ…
This is the last in a series of papers where we prove a conjecture of Deser and Schwimmer regarding the algebraic structure of ``global conformal invariants''; these are defined to be conformally invariant integrals of geometric scalars. The conjecture asserts that the integrand of any such integral can be expressed as a linear combination of a local conformal invariant, a divergence and of the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet integrand. The present paper, jointly with [6,7] gives a proof of an algebraic Proposition regarding local Riemannian invariants, which lies at the heart of our resolution of the Dese…
In this paper, we discuss the uniqueness in an integral geometry problem in a strongly convex domain. Our problem is related to the problem of finding a Riemannian metric by the distances between all pairs of the boundary points. For the proof, the problem is reduced to an inverse source problem for a kinetic equation on a Riemannian manifold and then the uniqueness theorem is proved in semi-geodesic coordinates by using the tools of Fourier analysis.
This paper deals with some simple results about spherical functions of type $δ$, namely new integral formulas, new results about behavior at infinity and some facts about the related $C_σ$ functions.
We show how Alesker's theory of valuations on manifolds gives rise to an algebraic picture of the integral geometry of any Riemannian isotropic space. We then apply this method to give a thorough account of the integral geometry of the complex space forms, i.e. complex projective space, complex hyperbolic space and complex euclidean space. In particular, we compute the family of kinematic formulas for invariant valuations and invariant curvature measures in these spaces. In addition to new and more efficient framings of the tube formulas of Gray and the kinematic formulas of Shifrin, this appr…
We study curvature invariants of a sub-Riemannian manifold (i.e., a manifold with a Riemannian metric on a non-holonomic distribution) related to mutual curvature of several pairwise orthogonal subspaces of the distribution, and prove geometrical inequalities for a sub-Riemannian submanifold. As applications, inequalities are proved for submanifolds with mutually orthogonal distributions that include scalar and mutual curvature. For compact submanifolds, inequalities are obtained that are supported by known integral formulas for almost-product manifolds.
We investigate the effect of the average scalar curvature on the conjugate radius, average area of the geodesic spheres, average volume of the metric balls and the total volume of a closed Riemannian manifold $N$ (or more generally $N$ with finite volume whose negative Ricci curvature integral on $SN$ is finite). For example, we prove that if the average scalar curvature is larger than the lower bound of the normalized Ricci curvature, then we can improve the Bishop-Gromov estimate on the average volume of the metric balls of any size. We also prove the monotone decreasing property of a certai…
We develop some of the basic theory for the obstacle problem on Riemannian Manifolds, and we use it to establish a mean value theorem. Our mean value theorem works for a very wide class of Riemannian manifolds and has no weights at all within the integral.
Given an $m$-dimensional closed connected Riemannian manifold $M$ smoothly isometrically immersed in an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $N$, we estimate the diameter of $M$ in terms of its mean curvature field integral under some geometric restrictions, and therefore generalize a recent work of Topping in the Euclidean case (Comment. Math. Helv., 83 (2008), 539--546).
We prove that in a Finsler manifold with vanishing $χ$-curvature (in particular with constant flag curvature) some non-Riemannian geometric structures are geodesically invariant and hence they induce a set of non-Riemannian first integrals. Two alternative expressions of these first integrals can be obtained either in terms of the mean Berwald curvature, or as functions of the mean Cartan torsion and the mean Landsberg curvature.
In this paper, we will first derive a DDVV-type optimal inequality for real skew-symmetric matrices, then we apply it to establish a Simons-type integral inequality for Riemannian submersions with totally geodesic fibres and Yang-Mills horizontal distributions. In this way, we show phenomenons of duality between Submanifold geometry and Riemannnian submersion, particularly between second fundamental form of a submanifold and integrability tensor of a Riemannian submersion.
