In this paper, we establish a general monotonicity formula of the following elliptic system $$ Δu_i+f_i(u_1,...,u_m)=0 \quad {\rm in} Ω, \label{0.1} $$ where $Ω\subset\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a bounded domain, $(f_i(u_1,...,u_m))=\nabla F(\vec{u})$, and $F(\vec{u})$ is a given smooth function of $\vec{u}=(u_1,...,u_m)$, $m,n$ are two positive integers. We also set up a new monotonicity formula for the following parabolic system $$ \partial_t u_i-Δu_i-f_i(u_1,...,u_m)=0, in (t_1, t_2)\times \mathbb{R}^n, $$ where $t_1<t_2$ are two constants, $(f_i(\vec{u}))$ is given as above. Our new monotonicity formulae are focused on more attention to the monotonicity of non-linear terms. Our point of view is that we introduce an index called $β$ to measure the monotonicity of the non-linear terms in the problems. The index in the study of monotonicity formulae is very useful in understanding the behavior of blow up sequences of solutions. Corresponding monotonicity results for free boundary problems are also presented.
In this article we establish a local parabolic almost monotonicity formula for two phase free boundary problems on Riemannian manifolds, which is an extension of a work of Edquist-Petrosyan.
Monotonicity formulae play a crucial role for many geometric PDEs, especially for their regularity theories. For minimal submanifolds in a Euclidean ball, the classical monotonicity formula implies that if such a submanifold passes through the centre of the ball, then its area is at least that of the equatorial disk. Recently Brendle and Hung proved a sharp area bound for minimal submanifolds when the prescribed point is not the centre of the ball, which resolved a conjecture of Alexander, Hoffman and Osserman. Their proof involves asymptotic analysis of an ingeniously chosen vector field, and…
This work is devoted to the study of parabolic frequency for solutions of the heat equation on Riemannian manifolds. We show that the parabolic frequency functional is almost increasing on compact manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature, which generalizes a monotonicity result proved by C. Poon and by L. Ni. The proof is based on a generalization of R. Hamilton's matrix Harnack inequality for small time. As applications, we obtain a unique continuation result. Monotonicity of a new quantity under two-dimensional Ricci flow, closely related to the parabolic frequency functional, is deriv…
We prove monotonicity of a parabolic frequency on manifolds. This is a parabolic analog of Almgren's frequency function. Remarkably we get monotonicity on all manifolds and no curvature assumption is needed. When the manifold is Euclidean space and the drift operator is the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator this can been seen to imply Poon's frequency monotonicity for the ordinary heat equation. Monotonicity of frequency is a parabolic analog of the 19th century Hadamard three circles theorem about log convexity of holomorphic functions on $\CC$. From the monotonicity, we get parabolic unique contin…
In this note, we construct families of functionals of the type of $\mathcal{F}$-functional and $\mathcal{W}$-functional of Perelman. We prove that these new functionals are nondecreasing under the Ricci flow. As applications, we give a proof of the theorem that compact steady Ricci breathers must be Ricci-flat. Using these new functionals, we also give a new proof of Perelman's no non-trivial expanding breather theorem. Furthermore, we prove that compact expanding Ricci breathers must be Einstein by a direct method. In this note, we also extend X. Cao's methods of eigenvalues\cite{C} and impro…
In this expository article, we discuss various monotonicity formulas for parabolic and elliptic operators and explain how the analysis of the function spaces and the geometry of the underlining spaces are intertwined. After briefly discussing some of the well-known analytical applications of monotonicity for parabolic operators, we turn to their elliptic counterparts, their geometric meaning, and some geometric consequences.
We consider possibly degenerate and singular elliptic equations in a possibly anisotropic medium. We obtain monotonicity results for the energy density, rigidity results for the solutions and classification results for the singularity/degeneracy/anisotropy allowed. As far as we know, these results are new even in the case of non-singular and non-degenerate anisotropic equations.
This paper defines a parabolic frequency for solutions of the heat equation along homothetically shrinking mean curvature flows and proves its monotonicity along such flows. As a corollary, frequency monotonicity provides a proof of backwards uniqueness. Additionally, for solutions of more general parabolic equations on mean curvature flow shrinkers, this paper provides bounds on the derivative of the frequency, which similarly imply backwards uniqueness.
We investigate the effect of frequency on the principal eigenvalue of a time-periodic parabolic operator with Dirichlet, Robin or Neumann boundary conditions. The monotonicity and asymptotic behaviors of the principal eigenvalue with respect to the frequency parameter are established. Our results prove a conjecture raised by Hutson, Michaikow and Poláčik [2001 J. Math. Biol.].
This paper defines a parabolic frequency for solutions of the heat equation on a Ricci flow and proves it's monotonicity along the flow. Frequency monotonicity is known to have many useful consequences; here it is shown to provide a simple proof of backwards uniqueness. For solutions of more general parabolic equations on a Ricci flow, this paper provides bounds on the derivative of the frequency, which similarly imply backwards uniqueness.
In this paper, we analyze main properties of the volume and layer potentials as well as the Poisson integral for a multi-dimensional degenerate parabolic equation. As consequences, we obtain trace formulae of the heat volume potential and the Poisson integral which solve Kac's problem for degenerate parabolic equations in cylindrical domains.
We derive identities for general flows of Riemannian metrics that may be regarded as local mean-value, monotonicity, or Lyapunov formulae. These generalize previous work of the first author for mean curvature flow and other nonlinear diffusions. Our results apply in particular to Ricci flow, where they yield a local monotone quantity directly analogous to Perelman's reduced volume V and a local identity related to Perelman's average energy F.
In this paper we give an unified approach to some questions arising in different fields of nonlinear analysis, namely: (a) the study of the structure of the Fuč\'ık spectrum and (b) possible variants and extensions of the monotonicity formula by Alt--Caffarelli--Friedman \cite{acf}. In the first part of the paper we present a class of optimal partition problems involving the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator. Beside establishing the existence of the optimal partition, we develop a theory for the extremality conditions and the regularity of minimizers. As a first application of this appr…
We introduce a monotonicity-based method for studying input-to-state stability (ISS) of nonlinear parabolic equations with boundary inputs. We first show that a monotone control system is ISS if and only if it is ISS w.r.t. constant inputs. Then we show by means of classical maximum principles that nonlinear parabolic equations with boundary disturbances are monotone control systems. With these two facts, we establish that ISS of the original nonlinear parabolic PDE with constant \textit{boundary disturbances} is equivalent to ISS of a closely related nonlinear parabolic PDE with constant \tex…
Consider the following coupled elliptic system of equations \begin{equation*} \label{} (-Δ)^s u_i = (u^2_1+\cdots+u^2_m)^{\frac{p-1}{2}} u_i \quad \text{in} \ \ \mathbb{R}^n , \end{equation*} where $0<s\le 2$, $p>1$, $m\ge1$, $u=(u_i)_{i=1}^m$ and $u_i:\mathbb R^n\to \mathbb R$. The qualitative behavior of solutions of the above system has been studied from various perspectives in the literature including the free boundary problems and the classification of solutions. For the case of local scalar equation, that is when $m=1$ and $s=1$, Gidas and Spruck in \cite{gs} and later Caffarelli, Gidas …
The main goal of this paper is to show how some monotonicity methods related with the subdifferential of suitable convex functions and its extensions as m-accretive operators in Banach spaces lead to new and unexpected results showing, for instance, the continuous and monotone dependence of solutions with the respect to the data (and coefficients) of the problem. In this way, this paper offers `a common roof' to several methods and results concerning monotone and non-monotone frameworks. Besides to present here some new results, this paper offers also a peculiar survey to some topics which att…
We study the strong unique continuation property backwards in time for the nonlocal equation in $\mathbb{R}^{n} \times \mathbb{R}$ \begin{equation}\label{one} (\partial_t - Δ)^{s} u = V(x,t)u \end{equation} for $s \in (0,1)$. Our main result Theorem 1.2 can be thought of as the nonlocal counterpart of the result obtained by Poon for the case when $s=1$. In order to prove Theorem 1.2 we develop the regularity theory of the extension problem for the equation above. With such theory in hands we establish: i) a basic monotonicity result for an adjusted frequency function which plays a central role…
In this paper we show boundary monotonicity formulae for rectifiable varifolds having a $C^{1,α}$ "boundary". In particular, we show that the area ratios of balls centered at this "boundary'' satisfy a nice monotonicity formula, similar to that for interior balls (proved in Allard's paper "On the first variation of a varifold''). This extends the boundary monotonicity formulae of Allard (see "On the first variation of a varifold- boundary behavior''), which require that the boundary is $C^{1,1}$. As a corollary, Allard's boundary regularity results extend to this case and provide a regularity …
We prove a generalization of the Li-Yau estimate for a board class of second order linear parabolic equations. As a consequence, we obtain a new Cheeger-Yau inequality and a new Harnack inequality for these equations. We also prove a Hamilton-Li-Yau estimate, which is a matrix version of the Li-Yau estimate, for these equations. This results in a generalization of Huisken's monotonicity formula for a family of evolving hypersurfaces. Finally, we also show that all these generalizations are sharp in the sense that the inequalities become equalities for a family of fundamental solutions, which h…
We prove quasi-monotonicity formulae for classical obstacle-type problems with quadratic energies with coefficients in fractional Sobolev spaces, and a linear term with a Dini-type continuity property. These formulae are used to obtain the regularity of free-boundary points following the approaches by Caffarelli, Monneau and Weiss.
We derive two equivalent definitions of the viscosity solutions to the homogeneous sub-p- Laplace parabolic equations on the Heisenberg group, and characterize the viscosity solutions in terms of an asymptotic mean value formula. Moreover, we construct an example to show that these formulae do not hold in non-asymptotic sense.
We prove by means of advanced pseudo-monotonicity methods an abstract existence result for parabolic partial differential equations with $\log$-Hölder continuous variable exponent nonlinearity governed by the symmetric part of a gradient only. To this end, we introduce the notions Bochner pseudo-monotonicity and Bochner coercivity, which are appropriate extensions of the concepts of pseudo-monotonicity and coercivity to unsteady problems in variable exponent spaces. In this context, we apply the so-called Hirano-Landes approach, which enables us to give general and easily verifiable conditions…
We are concerned with solutions to the parabolic Allen-Cahn equation in Riemannian manifolds. For a general class of initial condition we show non positivity of the limiting energy discrepancy. This in turn allows to prove almost monotonicity formula (a weak counterpart of Huisken's monotonicity formula) which gives a local uniform control of the energy densities at small scales. Such results will be used in [40] to extend previous important results from [31] in Euclidean space, showing convergence of solutions to the parabolic Allen-Cahn equations to Brakke's motion by mean curvature in space…
The aim of this article is to show how certain parabolic theorems follow from their elliptic counterparts. This technique is demonstrated through new proofs of five important theorems in parabolic unique continuation and the regularity theory of parabolic equations and geometric flows. Specifically, we give new proofs of an $L^2$ Carleman estimate for the heat operator, and the monotonicity formulas for the frequency function associated to the heat operator, the two-phase free boundary problem, the flow of harmonic maps, and the mean curvature flow. The proofs rely only on the underlying ellip…
We apply the stabilization technique, developed by T. Zelenyak in 1960s for parabolic equations, on curve shortening flow in $\R^3$, and derive several new monotonicity formulas. All of them share one main feature: the dependence of the "energy" term on the angle between the position vector and the plane orthogonal to the tangent vector. The first formula deals with the projection of the curve on the unit sphere, and computes the derivative of its length. The second formula is the generalization of the classical formula of G. Huisken, while the third one is the generalization of the monotonici…
We derive monotonicity formulae for solutions of the fractional Hénon-Lane-Emden equation \begin{equation*} (-Δ)^{s} u=|x|^a |u|^{p-1} u \ \ \ \text{in } \ \ \mathbb{R}^n, \end{equation*} when $0<s<2$, $a>0$ and $p>1$. Then, we apply these formulae to classify stable solutions of the above equation.
We study fractional parabolic equations with indefinite nonlinearities $$ \frac{\partial u} {\partial t}(x,t) +(-Δ)^s u(x,t)= x_1 u^p(x, t),\,\, (x, t) \in \mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{R}, $$ where $0<s<1$ and $1<p<\infty$. We first prove that all positive bounded solutions are monotone increasing along the $x_1$ direction. Based on this we derive a contradiction and hence obtain non-existence of solutions. These monotonicity and nonexistence results are crucial tools in a priori estimates and complete blow-up for fractional parabolic equations in bounded domains. To this end, we introduce seve…
We prove Hölder continuity up to the boundary for solutions of quasi-linear degenerate elliptic problems in divergence form, not necessarily of variational type, on Lipschitz domains with Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. This includes the $p$-Laplace operator for all $p \in (1,\infty)$, but also operators with unbounded coefficients. Based on the elliptic result we show that the corresponding parabolic problem is well-posed in the space $C(\barΩ)$ provided that the coefficients satisfy a mild monotonicity condition. More precisely, we show that the realization of the elliptic operator in…
We study large time behaviour of solutions of the Cauchy problem for equations of the form $\partial_tu-L u+λu=f(x,u)+g(x,u)\cdotμ$, where $L$ is the operator associated with a regular lower bounded semi-Dirichlet form ${\mathcal{E}}$ and $μ$ is a nonnegative bounded smooth measure with respect to the capacity determined by ${\mathcal{E}}$. We show that under the monotonicity and some integrability assumptions on $f,g$ as well as some assumptions on the form ${\mathcal{E}}$, $u(t,x)\rightarrow v(x)$ as $t\rightarrow\infty$ for quasi-every $x$, where $v$ is a solution of some elliptic equation …
In this paper, we establish several Liouville type theorems for entire solutions to fractional parabolic equations. We first obtain the key ingredients needed in the proof of Liouville theorems, such as narrow region principles and maximum principles for antisymmetric functions in unbounded domains, in which we remarkably weaken the usual decay condition $u \to 0$ at infinity with respect to the spacial variables to a polynomial growth on $u$ by constructing auxiliary functions. Then we derive monotonicity for the solutions in a half space $\mathbb{R}_+^n \times \mathbb{R}$ and obtain some new …
We prove a Liouville-type theorem for semilinear parabolic systems of the form $${\partial_t u_i}-Δu_i =\sum_{j=1}^{m}β_{ij} u_i^ru_j^{r+1}, \quad i=1,2,...,m$$ in the whole space ${\mathbb R}^N\times {\mathbb R}$. Very recently, Quittner [{\em Math. Ann.}, DOI 10.1007/s00208-015-1219-7 (2015)] has established an optimal result for $m=2$ in dimension $N\leq 2$, and partial results in higher dimensions in the range $p< N/(N-2)$. By nontrivial modifications of the techniques of Gidas and Spruck and of Bidaut-Véron, we partially improve the results of Quittner in dimensions $N\geq 3$. In particul…
We investigate the local properties, including the nodal set and the nodal properties of solutions to the following parabolic problem of Muckenhoupt-Neumann type: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \partial_t \overline{u} - y^{-a} \nabla \cdot(y^a \nabla \overline{u}) = 0 \quad &\text{ in } \mathbb{B}_1^+ \times (-1,0) \\ -\partial_y^a \overline{u} = q(x,t)u \quad &\text{ on } B_1 \times \{0\} \times (-1,0), \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $a\in(-1,1)$, is a fixed parameter $\mathbb{B}_1^+\subset \mathbb{R}^{N+1}$ is the upper unit half ball and $B_1$ is the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$. Our mai…
