We apply the stabilization technique, developed by T. Zelenyak in 1960s for parabolic equations, on curve shortening flow in $\R^3$, and derive several new monotonicity formulas. All of them share one main feature: the dependence of the "energy" term on the angle between the position vector and the plane orthogonal to the tangent vector. The first formula deals with the projection of the curve on the unit sphere, and computes the derivative of its length. The second formula is the generalization of the classical formula of G. Huisken, while the third one is the generalization of the monotonicity formula with logarithmic terms previously derived by the author for plane curves.
The method proposed by T. I. Zelenjak is applied to the mean curvature flow in the plane. A new type of monotonicity formula for star-shaped curves is obtained.
Space curve motion describes dynamics of material defects or interfaces, can be found in image processing or vortex dynamics. This article analyses some properties of space curves evolved by the curve shortening flow. In contrast to the classical case of shrinking planar curves, space curves do not obey the Avoidance principle in general. They can lose their convexity or develop non-circular singularities even if they are simple. In the first part of the text, we show that even though the convexity of space curves is not preserved during the motion, their orthogonal projections remain convex. …
The blow-up rates of derivatives of the curvature function will be presented when the closed curves contract to a point in finite time under the general curve shortening flow. In particular, this generalizes a theorem of M.E. Gage and R.S. Hamilton about mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$.
We study an $L^{2}$-type gradient flow of an immersed elastic curve in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ whose endpoints repel each other via a Coulomb potential. By De Giorgi's minimizing movements scheme we prove long-time existence of the flow. The work is complemented by several numerical experiments.
In this paper we prove that if $γ$ is a Jordan curve on $\mathbb{S}^2$ then there is a smooth curve shortening flow defined on $(0,T)$ which converges to $γ$ in $\mathcal{C}^0$ as $t\to 0^+ $. Another perspective is that the level-set flow of $γ$ is smooth. This is a generalization of the author's previous work where the planar case was studied. If a Jordan curve on $\mathbb{S}^2$ has Lebesgue measure zero then we show that the level-set flow instantly becomes a smooth closed curve. If the Lebesgue measure is positive then for small time the level-set flow is an annulus with smooth boundary. T…
We prove that the only closed, embedded ancient solutions to the curve shortening flow on $\mathbb{S}^2$ are equators or shrinking circles, starting at an equator at time $t=-\infty$ and collapsing to the north pole at time $t=0$. To obtain the result, we first prove a Harnack inequality for the curve shortening flow on the sphere. Then an application of the Gauss-Bonnet, easily allows us to obtain curvature bounds for ancient solutions leading to backwards smooth convergence to an equator. To complete the proof, we use an Aleksandrov reflection argument to show that maximal symmetry is preser…
We classify closed convex $α$-curve shortening flows for sub-affine-critical powers $α\leq \frac{1}{3}$. In addition, we show that closed convex smooth finite entropy $α$-curve shortening flows with $\frac{1}{3}<α$ is a shrinking circle. After normalization, the ancient flows satisfying the above conditions converge exponentially fast to smooth closed convex shrinkers at the backward infinity. In particular, when $α=\frac{1}{k^2-1}$ with $3\leq k \in \mathbb{N}$, the round circle shrinker has non-trivial Jacobi fields, but the ancient flows do not evolve along the Jacobi fields.
Using area-preserving curve shortening flow, and a new inequality relating the potential generated by a set to its curvature, we study a non-local isoperimetric problem which arises in the study of di-block copolymer melts, also referred to as the Ohta-Kawasaki energy. We are able to show that the only connected critical point is the ball under mild assumptions on the boundary, in the small energy/mass regime. In particular this class includes all rectifiable, connected 1-manifolds in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We also classify the simply connected critical points on the torus in this regime, showing the…
We prove the control and stabilization of the Benjamin-Ono equation in $L^2(\T)$, the lowest regularity where the initial value problem is well-posed. This problem was already initiated in \cite{LinaresRosierBO} where a stronger stabilization term was used (that makes the equation of parabolic type in the control zone). Here we employ a more natural stabilization term related to the $L^2$ norm. Moreover, by proving a theorem of controllability in $L^2$, we manage to prove the global controllability in large time. Our analysis relies strongly on the bilinear estimates proved in \cite{MolinetPil…
For parabolic equations of the form $$ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} - \sum_{i,j=1}^n a_{ij} (x, u) \frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial x_i \partial x_j} + f (x, u, D u) = 0 \quad \mbox{in } {\mathbb R}_+^{n+1}, $$ where ${\mathbb R}_+^{n+1} = {\mathbb R}^n \times (0, \infty)$, $n \ge 1$, $D = (\partial / \partial x_1, \ldots, \partial / \partial x_n)$ is the gradient operator, and $f$ is some function, we obtain conditions guaranteeing that every solution tends to zero as $t \to \infty$.
In this work, we use the classical moment method to find a practical and simple criterion to determine if a family of linearized Dispersive equations on a periodic domain is exactly controllable and exponentially stabilizable with any given decay rate in $H^{s}_{p}(\mathbb{T})$ with $s\in \mathbb{R}$. We apply these results to prove that the linearized Smith equation, the linearized dispersion-generalized Benjamin-Ono equation, the linearized fourth-order Schrödinger equation, and the Higher-order Schrödinger equations are exactly controllable and exponentially stabilizable with any given deca…
We obtain sharp conditions guaranteeing that every non-negative weak solution of the inequality $$ \sum_{|α| = m} \partial^α a_α(x, t, u) - u_t \ge f (x, t) g (u) \quad \mbox{in} {\mathbb R}_+^{n+1} = {\mathbb R}^n \times (0, \infty), \quad m,n \ge 1, $$ stabilizes to zero as $t \to \infty$. These conditions generalize the well-known Keller-Osserman condition on the grows of the function $g$ at infinity.
This paper is concerned with controllability and stabilization properties of the dispersion generalized Benjamin equation on the periodic domain $\mathbb{T}.$ First, by assuming the control input acts on all the domain, the system is proved to be globally exactly controllable in the Sobolev space $H^{s}_{p}(\mathbb{T}),$ with $s\geq 0.$ Second, by providing a locally-damped term added to the equation as a feedback law, it is shown that the resulting equation is globally well-posed and locally exponentially stabilizable in the space $L^{2}_{p}(\mathbb{T}).$ The main ingredient to prove the glob…
The moment method is used to prove the exact controllability of a wide class of bidimensional linear dispersive PDE's posed on the two-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^{2}.$ The control function is considered to be acting on a small vertical and horizontal strip of the torus. Our results apply to several well-known models including some bidimesional extensions of the Benajamin-Ono and Korteweg-de Vries equations. As a by product, the exponential stabilizability with any given decay rate is also established in $H^{s}_{p}(\mathbb{T}^{2}),$ with $s\geq 0,$ by constructing an appropriated feedback co…
This paper deals with the quasilinear attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_t=\nabla\cdot \big((u+1)^{m-1}\nabla u -χu(u+1)^{p-2}\nabla v +ξu(u+1)^{q-2}\nabla w\big),\\[] 0=Δv+αu-βv,\\[] 0=Δw+γu-δw \end{cases} \end{align*} in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ $(n \in \mathbb{N})$ with smooth boundary $\partial Ω$, where $m, p, q \in \mathbb{R}$, $χ, ξ, α, β, γ, δ>0$ are constants. In the case that $m=1$ and $p=q=2$, when $χα-ξγ<0$ and $β=δ$, Tao-Wang (Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci.; 2013; 23; 1-36) proved that global bounded classical solutions toward th…
We prove the semi-global controllability and stabilization of the $(1+1)$-dimensional wave maps equation with spatial domain $\mathbb{S}^1$ and target $\mathbb{S}^k$. First we show that damping stabilizes the system when the energy is strictly below the threshold $2π$, where harmonic maps appear as obstruction for global stabilization. Then, we adapt an iterative control procedure to get low-energy exact controllability of the wave maps equation. This result is optimal in the case $k=1$.
