For parabolic equations of the form $$ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} - \sum_{i,j=1}^n a_{ij} (x, u) \frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial x_i \partial x_j} + f (x, u, D u) = 0 \quad \mbox{in } {\mathbb R}_+^{n+1}, $$ where ${\mathbb R}_+^{n+1} = {\mathbb R}^n \times (0, \infty)$, $n \ge 1$, $D = (\partial / \partial x_1, \ldots, \partial / \partial x_n)$ is the gradient operator, and $f$ is some function, we obtain conditions guaranteeing that every solution tends to zero as $t \to \infty$.
In this paper, we present output feedback boundary stabilization for a class of semilinear parabolic PDEs with a boundary measurement and an actuation located at the same place. The method uses backstepping transformations, where the state and error systems are proved to be locally exponentially stable in the $\mathbb{H}^4$ norm. The stability of the transformed systems are obtained by constructing a strict Lyapunov function. A numerical example using the FitzHugh-Nagumo equation shows the proposed control law stabilizes the system into its equilibrium solution.
We consider output-feedback stabilization problems for a class of two-component linear parabolic systems with boundary actuation and measurement. The state-feedback control laws are obtained using backstepping method and require measurement of the state at each point in the domain. To this end, backstepping observers are designed for both anti-collocated and collocated sensors and actuators. Furthermore, we show the closed-loop systems consisting of the plant, the backstepping control laws, and the observer is exponentially stable. The backstepping method is used to obtain both control and obs…
In this paper we consider feedback stabilization for parabolic variational inequalities of obstacle type with time and space depending reaction and convection coefficients and show exponential stabilization to nonstationary trajectories. Based on a Moreau-Yosida approximation, a feedback operator is established using a finite (and uniform in the approximation index) number of actuators leading to exponential decay of given rate of the state variable. Several numerical examples are presented addressing smooth and nonsmooth obstacle functions.
This work is devoted to the stabilization of parabolic systems with a finite-dimensional control subjected to a constant delay. Our main result shows that the Fattorini-Hautus criterion yields the existence of such a feedback control, as in the case of stabilization without delay. The proof consists in splitting the system into a finite dimensional unstable part and a stable infinite-dimensional part and to apply the Artstein transformation on the finite-dimensional system to remove the delay in the control. Using our abstract result, we can prove new results for the stabilization of parabolic…
In this paper we consider the initial Neumann boundary value problem for a degenerate Keller--Segel model which features a signal-dependent non-increasing motility function. The main obstacle of analysis comes from the possible degeneracy when the signal concentration becomes unbounded. In the current work, we are interested in boundedness and exponential stability of the classical solution in higher dimensions. With the aid of a Lyapunov functional and a delicate Alikakos--Moser type iteration, we are able to establish a time-independent upper bound of the concentration provided that the moti…
This paper deals with the rapid stabilization of a degenerate parabolic equation with a right Dirich-let control. Our strategy consists in applying a backstepping strategy, which seeks to find an invertible transformation mapping the degenerate parabolic equation to stabilize into an exponentially stable system whose decay rate is known and as large as we desire. The transformation under consideration in this paper is Fredholm. It involves a kernel solving itself another PDE, at least formally. The main goal of the paper is to prove that the Fredholm transformation is well-defined, continuous …
For the time-space fractional degenerate Keller-Segel equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \partial _{t}^{β}u=-(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}(ρ(v)u),& t>0\\ (-Δ)^{\fracα{2}} v+v=u,& t>0 \end{cases} \end{equation*} $x\inΩ, Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n}, β\in (0,1),α\in (1,2)$, we consider for $n\geq 3$ the problem of finding a time-independent upper bound of the classical solution such that as $θ>0,C>0$ \begin{equation*} \left \| u(\cdot ,t)-\overline{u_{0}} \right \|_{L^{\infty }(Ω)}+\left \| v(\cdot ,t)-\overline{u_{0}} \right \|_{W^{1,\infty }(Ω)}\leq Ce^{(-θ)^{1/β}t}, \end{equation*} where $\overline{u_{0}…
This paper deals with the two-species chemotaxis-competition system $u_t = d_1 Δu - χ_1 \nabla \cdot (u \nabla w) + μ_1 u(1 - u - a_1 v)$, $v_t = d_2 Δv - χ_2 \nabla \cdot (v \nabla w) + μ_2 v(1 - a_2 u - v)$, $0 = d_3 Δw + αu + βv - γw$, where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with smooth boundary, $n\ge 2$; $χ_i$ and $μ_i$ are constants satisfying some conditions. The above system was studied in the cases that $a_1,a_2\in (0,1)$ and $a_1>1>a_2$, and it was proved that global existence and asymptotic stability hold when $\frac{χ_i}{μ_i}$ are small. However, the conditions in the above…
In the first part of this article, we study feedback stabilization of a parabolic coupled system by using localized interior controls. The system is feedback stabilizable with exponential decay $-ω<0$ for any $ω>0$. A stabilizing control is found in feedback form by solving a suitable algebraic Riccati equation. In the second part, a conforming finite element method is employed to approximate the continuous system by a finite dimensional discrete system. The approximated system is also feedback stabilizable (uniformly) with exponential decay $-ω+ε$, for any $ε>0$ and the feedback control is ob…
This paper deals with the quasilinear attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_t=\nabla\cdot \big((u+1)^{m-1}\nabla u -χu(u+1)^{p-2}\nabla v +ξu(u+1)^{q-2}\nabla w\big),\\[] 0=Δv+αu-βv,\\[] 0=Δw+γu-δw \end{cases} \end{align*} in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ $(n \in \mathbb{N})$ with smooth boundary $\partial Ω$, where $m, p, q \in \mathbb{R}$, $χ, ξ, α, β, γ, δ>0$ are constants. In the case that $m=1$ and $p=q=2$, when $χα-ξγ<0$ and $β=δ$, Tao-Wang (Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci.; 2013; 23; 1-36) proved that global bounded classical solutions toward th…
We derive a saturated feedback control, which locally stabilizes a linear reaction-diffusion equation. In contrast to most other works on this topic, we do not assume the Lyapunov stability of the uncontrolled system and consider general unstable systems. Using Lyapunov methods, we provide estimates for the region of attraction for the closed-loop system, given in terms of linear and bilinear matrix inequalities. We show that our results can be used with distributed as well as scalar boundary control, and with different types of saturations. The efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrate…
For an arbitrary parameter $p\in [1,+\infty]$, we consider the problem of exponential stabilization in the spatial $L^{p}$-norm, and $W^{1,p}$-norm, respectively, for a class of anti-stable linear parabolic PDEs with space-time-varying coefficients in the absence of a Gevrey-like condition, which is often imposed on time-varying coefficients of PDEs and used to guarantee the existence of smooth (w.r.t. the time variable) kernel functions in the literature. Then, based on the obtained exponential stabilities, we show that the solution of the considered system depends continuously on the $L^{p}$…
We establish a spatial gradient maximum principle for classical solutions to the initial and Neumann boundary value problem of some quasilinear parabolic equations on smooth convex domains.
We obtain Calderón-Zygmund type estimates for parabolic equations with Orlicz growth, where nonlinearities involved in the equations may be discontinuous for the space and time variables. In addition, we consider parabolic systems with the Uhlenbeck structure.
It is known that there is a class of semilinear parabolic equations for which interior gradient blow-up (in finite time) occurs for some solutions. We construct a continuation of such solutions after gradient blow-up. This continuation is global in time and we give an example when it never becomes a classical solution again.
We establish the pointwise continuity of bounded weak solutions to of a class of scalar parabolic equations and strongly coupled parabolic systems. Our approach to the regularity theory of parabolic scalar equations is quite elementary and its applications to strongly coupled systems does not require higher $L^p$ integrability of derivatives.
We prove interior Hölder estimates for the spatial gradient of viscosity solutions to the parabolic homogeneous $p$-Laplacian equation \[ u_t=|\nabla u|^{2-p} \mbox{ div} (|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u), \] where $1<p<\infty$. This equation arises from tug-of-war-like stochastic games with noise. It can also be considered as the parabolic $p$-Laplacian equation in non divergence form.
In this thesis, a unified approach to prove the boundedness of gradients of solutions to degenerate and singular elliptic and parabolic phi-Laplacian systems is presented. At first, a Cacciopoli-type energy inequality with an additional function f which can be chosen freely is proven. Then, Di Giorgi's method is applied using level sets which will lead to L-infinity-estimates on the gradient of the weak solution.
Asymptotic solutions of a quasilinear parabolic equation with a small parameter at the higher derivative are constructed near large-gradient and Lagrange singularities of A-type, which represent interest for studying processes of shock waves formation in physical media with a small nonzero viscosity.
We are concerned with gradient estimates for solutions to a class of singular quasilinear parabolic equations with measure data, whose prototype is given by the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation $u_t-Δ_p u=μ$ with $p\in (1,2)$. The case when $p\in \big(2-\frac{1}{n+1},2\big)$ were studied in [15]. In this paper, we extend the results in [15] to the open case when $p\in \big(\frac{2n}{n+1},2-\frac{1}{n+1}\big]$ if $n\geq 2$ and $p\in(\frac{5}{4}, \frac{3}{2}]$ if $n=1$. More specifically, in a more singular range of $p$ as above, we establish pointwise gradient estimates via linear parabolic Riesz…
We provide global gradient estimates for solutions to a general type of nonlinear parabolic equations, possibly in a Riemannian geometry setting. Our result is new in comparison with the existing ones in the literature, in light of the validity of the estimates in the global domain, and it detects several additional regularity effects due to special parabolic data. Moreover, our result comprises a large number of nonlinear sources treated by a unified approach, and it recovers many classical results as special cases.
Motivated by problems arising in geometric flows, we prove several regularity results for systems of local and nonlocal equations, adapting to the parabolic case a neat argument due to Caffarelli. The geometric motivation of this work comes from recent works arising in the theory harmonic maps with free boundary in particular. We prove Hölder regularity of weak solutions.
In this paper we consider viscosity solutions of a class of non-homogeneous singular parabolic equations $$\partial_t u-|Du|^γΔ_p^N u=f,$$ where $-1<γ<0$, $1<p<\infty$, and $f$ is a given bounded function. We establish interior Hölder regularity of the gradient by studying two alternatives: The first alternative uses an iteration which is based on an approximation lemma. In the second alternative we use a small perturbation argument.
In this paper, we prove the Lorentz space $L^{q,p}$-estimates for gradients of very weak solutions to the linear parabolic equations with $\mathbf{A}_q$-weights $$u_t-\operatorname{div}(A(x,t)\nabla u)=\operatorname{div}(F),$$ in a bounded domain $Ω\times (0,T)\subset\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$, where $A$ has a small mean oscillation, and $Ω$ is a Lipchistz domain with a small Lipschitz constant.
We prove interior Hölder estimate for the spatial gradients of the viscosity solutions to the singular or degenerate parabolic equation $$ u_t=|\nabla u|^κ\mbox{div} (|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u), $$ where $p\in (1,\infty)$ and $κ\in (1-p,\infty).$ This includes the from $L^\infty$ to $C^{1,α}$ regularity for parabolic $p$-Laplacian equations in both divergence form with $κ=0$, and non-divergence form with $κ=2-p$. This work is a continuation of a paper by the last two authors \cite{JS}.
We consider a general form of a parabolic equation that generalizes both the standard parabolic $p$-Laplace equation and the normalized version that has been proposed in stochastic game theory. We establish an equivalence between this equation and the standard $p$-parabolic equation posed in a fictitious space dimension, valid for radially symmetric solutions. This allows us to find suitable explicit solutions for example of Barenblatt type, and as a consequence we settle the exact asymptotic behaviour of the Cauchy problem even for nonradial data. We also establish the asymptotic behaviour in…
We consider a parabolic equation driven by a nonlinear diffusive operator and we obtain a gradient estimate in the domain where the equation takes place. This estimate depends on the structural constants of the equation, on the geometry of the ambient space and on the initial and boundary data. As a byproduct, one easily obtains a universal interior estimate, not depending on the parabolic data. The setting taken into account includes sourcing terms and general diffusion coefficients. The results are new, to the best of our knowledge, even in the Euclidean setting, though we treat here also th…
In this paper, we prove global gradient estimates for solutions to linear elliptic and parabolic equations. For a sufficiently smooth bounded convex domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, we show that a solution $ϕ\in W_0^{1,\infty}(Ω)$ to an appropriate elliptic equation $\mathcal{L} ϕ= F$, with $F \in L^{\infty}(Ω;\mathbb{R})$, satisfies $|\nabla ϕ|_{\infty} \leq C |F|_{\infty}$, with a positive constant $C = \exp(C(\mathcal{L})\text{diam}(Ω))$. We also obtain similiar estimates in the parabolic setting. The proof of these exponential bounds relies on global gradient estimates inspired by a series …
