We consider the invariants Ker and Im for commutative squares in quasi-abelian categories. These invariants were introduced by Lambek for groups and then studied by Hilton and Nomura in exact categories.
It is well-known that the category of presheaf functors is complete and cocomplete, and that the Yoneda embedding into the presheaf category preserves products. However, the Yoneda embedding does not preserve coproducts. It is perhaps less well-known that if we restrict the codomain of the Yoneda embedding to the full subcategory of limit-preserving functors, then this embedding preserves colimits, while still enjoying most of the other useful properties of the Yoneda embedding. We call this modified embedding the Lambek embedding. The category of limit-preserving functors is known to be a ref…
Let A be a symmetric monoidal closed exact category. This category is a natural framework to define the notions of purity and flatness. We show that an object F in A is flat if and only if any conflation ending in F is pure. Furthermore, we prove a generalization of the Lambek Theorem ([La64]) in A. In the case A is a quasi-abelian category, we prove that A has enough pure injective objects.
Every small monoidal category with universal finite joins of central idempotents is monoidally equivalent to the category of global sections of a sheaf of local monoidal categories on a topological space. Every small stiff monoidal category monoidally embeds into such a category of global sections. An infinitary version of these theorems also holds in the spatial case. These representation results are functorial and subsume the Lambek-Moerdijk-Awodey sheaf representation for toposes, the Stone representation of Boolean algebras, and the Takahashi representation of Hilbert modules as continuous…
It is well-known that the category of Kleisli algebras for a monoidal monad carries a canonical monoidal structure. We define the notion of a commutative graded monad and present a strictly two-categorical proof that Kleisli algebras for such monads equally carry a canonical monoidal structure which reduce to the monoidal monad case when the commutative graded monad in question is graded over the trivial monoidal category.
We discuss what it means for a symmetric monoidal category to be a module over a commutative semiring category. Each of the categories of (1) cartesian monoidal categories, (2) semiadditive categories, and (3) connective spectra can be recovered in this way as categories of modules over a commutative semiring category (or $\infty$-category in the last case). This language provides a simultaneous generalization of the formalism of algebraic theories (operads, PROPs, Lawvere theories) and stable homotopy theory, with essentially a variant of algebraic K-theory bridging between the two.
The main objective of this paper is to construct a symmetric monoidal closed model category of coherently commutative monoidal quasi-categories. We construct another model category structure whose fibrant objects are (essentially) those coCartesian fibrations which represent objects that are known as symmetric monoidal quasi-categories in the literature. We go on to establish a Quillen equivalence between the two model categories.
Over a field of characteristic zero, we show that the forgetful functor from the homotopy category of commutative dg algebras to the homotopy category of dg associative algebras is faithful. In fact, the induced map of derived mapping spaces gives an injection on all homotopy groups at any basepoint. We prove similar results both for unital and non-unital algebras, and also Koszul dually for the universal enveloping algebra functor from dg Lie algebras to dg associative algebras. An important ingredient is a natural model for these derived mapping spaces as Maurer-Cartan spaces of complete fil…
The category of involutive non-commutative sets encodes the structure of an involution compatible with a (co)associative (co)multiplication. We prove that the category of involutive bimonoids in a symmetric monoidal category is equivalent to the category of algebras over a PROP constructed from the category of involutive non-commutative sets.
We prove that an action $ρ:A\to M(C_0(\mathbb{G})\otimes A)$ of a locally compact quantum group on a $C^*$-algebra has a universal equivariant compactification, and prove a number of other category-theoretic results on $\mathbb{G}$-equivariant compactifications: that the categories compactifications of $ρ$ and $A$ respectively are locally presentable (hence complete and cocomplete), that the forgetful functor between them is a colimit-creating left adjoint, and that epimorphisms therein are surjective and injections are regular monomorphisms. When $\mathbb{G}$ is regular coamenable we also sho…
In this paper we construct a symmetric monoidal closed model category of coherently commutative monoidal categories. The main aim of this paper is to establish a Quillen equivalence between a model category of coherently commutative monoidal categories and a natural model category of Permutative (or strict symmetric monoidal) categories, $\mathbf{Perm}$, which is not a symmetric monoidal closed model category. The right adjoint of this Quillen equivalence is the classical Segal's Nerve functor.
Let $A$ be an algebra over a commutative ring $k$. We introduce the notion of a coquasitriangular left bialgebroid over $A$ and show that the category of left comodules over such a bialgebroid has a braiding. We also investigate a Tannaka type construction of bimonads and bialgebroids. As an application, the Faddeev-Reshetikhin-Takhtajan (FRT) construction over the algebra $A$ is established. Our construction associates a coquasitriangular bialgebroid to a braided object $(M, c)$ in the category of $A$-bimodules such that $M$ is finitely generated and projective as a left $A$-module. A Hopf al…
A long-standing open problem in the semantics of programming languages supporting probabilistic choice is to find a commutative monad for probability on the category DCPO. In this paper we present three such monads and a general construction for finding even more. We show how to use these monads to provide a sound and adequate denotational semantics for the Probabilistic FixPoint Calculus (PFPC) -- a call-by-value simply-typed lambda calculus with mixed-variance recursive types, term recursion and probabilistic choice. We also show that in the special case where we consider continuous dcpo's, …
