We construct an AF-algebra $A$ such that its local multiplier algebra $M_{\text{loc}}(A)$ does not agree with $M_{\text{loc}}(M_{\text{loc}}(A))$, thus answering a question raised by G.K. Pedersen in 1978.
We determine the injective envelope and local multiplier algebra of a continuous trace C*-algebra that arises from a continuous Hilbert bundle over an arbitrary locally compact Hausdorff space. In addition, we show that the second-order local multiplier algebra of any such algebra is injective.
We generalize some technical results of Glicksberg to the realm of general operator algebras and use them to give a characterization of open and closed projections in terms of certain multiplier algebras. This generalizes a theorem of J. Wells characterizing an important class of ideals in uniform algebras. The difficult implication in our main theorem is that if a projection is open in an operator algebra, then the multiplier algebra of the associated hereditary subalgebra arises as the closure of the subalgebra with respect to the strict topology of the multiplier algebra of a naturally asso…
We discuss necessary as well as sufficient conditions for the second iterated local multiplier algebra of a separable C*-algebra to agree with the first.
We construct Hopf algebra isomorphisms of discrete multiplier Hopf C*-algebras, and Hopf AF C*-algebras (generalized quantum UHF algebras), from K-theoretical data. Some of the intermediate results are of independent interest, such as a result that Jordan maps of Hopf algebras intertwine antipodes, and the applications to automorphisms of Hopf algebras.
In this paper we investigate whether positive elements in the multiplier algebras of certain finite C*-algebras can be written as finite linear combinations of projections with positive coefficients (PCP). Our focus is on the category of underlying C*-algebras that are separable, simple, with real rank zero, stable rank one, finitely many extreme traces, and strict comparison of projections by the traces. We prove that the strict comparison of projections holds also in the multiplier algebra of the stabilizer algebra. Based on this result and under the additional hypothesis that the multiplier…
We obtain some results that relate the Connes spectrum with the innerness of automorphisms in the fixed point local multiplier algebra. The results are variants and/or extensions of corresponding results of Olesen, Pedersen and Stormer [6], [7], [9] and Ara and Mathieu [1] to the case of local multiplier algebras.
Several examples of (separable) C*-algebras with the property that their second (iterated) local multiplier algebra is strictly larger than the first have been found by various groups of authors over the past few years, thus answering a question originally posed by G. K. Pedersen in 1978. This survey discusses a systematic approach by P. Ara and the author to produce such examples on the one hand; on the other hand, we present new criteria guaranteeing that the second and the first local multiplier algebra of a separable C*-algebra agree. For this class of C*-algebras, each derivation of the l…
A precise description of the injective envelope of a spatial continuous trace C*-algebra A over a Stonean space Delta is given. The description is based on the notion of a weakly continuous Hilbert bundle, which we show to be a Kaplansky--Hilbert module over the abelian AW*-algebra C(Delta). We then use the description of the injective envelope of A to study the first- and second-order local multiplier algebras of A. In particular, we show that the second-order local multiplier algebra of A is precisely the injective envelope of A.
We consider the question of when the multiplier algebra $M(\mathcal{A})$ of a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ is a $ W^*$-algebra, and show that it holds for a stable $C^*$-algebra exactly when it is a $C^*$-algebra of compact operators. This implies that if for every Hilbert $C^*$-module $E$ over a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$, the algebra $B(E)$ of adjointable operators on $E$ is a $ W^*$-algebra, then $\mathcal{A}$ is a $C^*$-algebra of compact operators. Also we show that a unital $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ which is Morita equivalent to a $ W^*$-algebra must be a $ W^*$-algebra.
Let A_i be a family of unital C*-algebras, respectively, of von Neumann algebras and phi: N_0 \to C. We show that if a Hankel matrix related to phi is trace-class, then there exists a unique completely bounded map M_phi on the reduced free product of the A_i, which acts as an radial multiplier. Hereby we generalize a result of Wysoczański for Herz-Schur multipliers on reduced group C*-algebras for free products of groups.
The subject of quasidiagonality is of much interest in many places - among other things, in the classification program for simple unital separable nuclear C*-algebras. In this note, we give two characterizations of nuclearity and quasidiagonality (for simple unital separable C*-algebras). Our first characterization is the nuclear analogue of Dadarlat's characterization of exact quasidiagonal C*-algebras. Our second characterizatiion is "dual" to the interesting (and important) Popa property first studied by Popa.
Let A be a C_0(X)-algebra. Then the multiplier algebra M(A) is a C(Y)-algebra in a natural way, where Y is the Stone-Cech compactification of X. Each x in X gives rise to an ideal J_x of A and an ideal H_x of M(A). The ideal J_x is contained in H_x, and H_x is contained in the strict closure of J_x in M(A). This paper studies the problem of determining when H_x is equal to the strict closure of J_x. THis can be interpreted as a problem of spectral synthesis type.
Main result: If a C*-algebra is simple, $σ$-unital, has finitely many extremal traces, and has strict comparison of positive elements by traces, then its multiplier also has strict comparison of positive elements by traces. The same results holds if "finitely many extremal traces" is replaced by "quasicontinuous scale". A key ingredient in the proof is that every positive element in the multiplier algebra of an arbitrary $σ$-unital C*-algebra can be approximated by a bi-diagonal series. An application of strict comparison: If the algebra is a simple separable stable $σ$-unital with real rank z…
In this paper we investigate the extremal richness of the multiplier algebra $M(A)$ and the corona algebra $M(A)/A$, for a simple C*-algebra $A$ with real rank zero and stable rank one. We show that the space of extremal quasitraces and the scale of $A$ contain enough information to determine whether $M(A)/A$ is extremally rich. In detail, if the scale is finite, then $M(A)/A$ is extremally rich. In important cases, and if the scale is not finite, extremal richness is characterized by a restrictive condition: the existence of only one infinite extremal quasitrace which is isolated in a convex …
We answer a question of Takesaki by showing that the following can be derived from the thesis of N-T Shen: If A and B are sigma-unital hereditary C*-subalgebras of C such that ||p - q|| < 1, where p and q are the corresponding open projections, then A and B are isomorphic. We give some further elaborations and counterexamples with regard to the sigma-unitality hypothesis. We produce a natural one-to-one correspondence between complete order isomorphisms of C*-algebras and invertible left multipliers of imprimitivity bimodules. A corollary of the above two results is that any complete order iso…
We define the Schur multipliers of a separable von Neumann algebra M with Cartan masa A, generalising the classical Schur multipliers of $B(\ell^2)$. We characterise these as the normal A-bimodule maps on M. If M contains a direct summand isomorphic to the hyperfinite II_1 factor, then we show that the Schur multipliers arising from the extended Haagerup tensor product $A \otimes_{eh} A$ are strictly contained in the algebra of all Schur multipliers.
Any multiplier Hopf *-algebra} with positive integrals gives rise to a locally compact quantum group (in the sense of Kustermans and Vaes). As a special case of such a situation, we have the compact quantum groups (in the sense of Woronowicz) and the discrete quantum groups (as introduced by Effros and Ruan). In fact, the class of locally compact quantum groups arising from such multiplier Hopf *-algebras} is self-dual. The most important features of these objects are (1) that they are of a purely algebraic nature and (2) that they have already a great complexity, very similar to the general l…
Let $G$ be a locally compact abelian Hausdorff topological group which is non-compact and whose Pontryagin dual $Γ$ is partially ordered. Let $Γ^{+}\subsetΓ$ be the semigroup of positive elements in $Γ$. The Hardy space $H^{2}(G)$ is the closed subspace of $L^{2}(G)$ consisting of functions whose Fourier transforms are supported on $Γ^{+}$. In this paper we consider the C*-algebra $C^{*}(\mathcal{T}(G)\cup F(C(\dot{Γ^{+}})))$ generated by Toeplitz operators with continuous symbols on $G$ which vanish at infinity and Fourier multipliers with symbols which are continuous on one point compactific…
Let $\MCZK$, denote the multiplier algebra over $\CZK$, the algebra of continuous functions into the compact operators with spectrum the infinite product of two-spheres. We consider multiplier projections in $\MCZK$ of a certain diagonal form. We show that, while for each multiplier projection $Q$ of the special form, we have that $Q(x)\in\BH\setminus \KK$ for all $x\in \prod_{j=1}^\infty S^2$, the ideal generated by $Q$ in $\MCZK$ might be proper. We further show that the ideal generated by a multiplier projection of the special form is proper if and only if the projection is stably finite.
We answer the title question for sigma-unital C*-algebras. The answer is that the algebra must be the direct sum of a dual C*-algebra and a C*-algebra satisfying a certain local unitality condition. We also discuss similar problems in the context of Hilbert C*-bimodules and imprimitivity bimodules and in the context of centralizers of Pedersen's ideal.
In this paper, we investigate the structure of the multiplier module of a Hilbert module over a locally C*-algebra and the relationship between the set of all adjointable operators from a Hilbert A-module E to a Hilbert A-module F and the set of all adjointable operators from the multiplier module M(E)of E to the multiplier module M(F) of F.
Using representation theory techniques we prove that various spaces of derivations or one-sided multipliers over certain operator algebras are reflexive. A sample result: any bounded local derivation (local left multiplier) on an automorphic semicrossed product is a derivation (resp. left multiplier). In the process we obtain various results of independent interest. In particular, the finite dimensional nest representations of the tensor algebra of a topological graph separate points.
We introduce a noncommutative analogue of the Figá-Talamanca-Herz algebra $A_p(G)$ on the natural predual of the operator space $\frak{M}_{p,cb}$ of completely bounded Schur multipliers on Schatten space $S_p$. We determine the isometric Schur multipliers and prove that the space $\frak{M}_{p}$ of bounded Schur multipliers on Schatten space $S_p$ is the closure in the weak operator topology of the span of isometric multipliers.
We study from the perspective of Borel complexity theory the classification problem for multiplier algebras associated with operator algebraic varieties. These algebras are precisely the multiplier algebras of irreducible complete Nevanlinna-Pick spaces. We prove that these algebras are not classifiable up to algebraic isomorphism using countable structures as invariants. In order to prove such a result, we develop the theory of turbulence for Polish groupoids, which generalizes Hjorth's turbulence theory for Polish group actions. We also prove that the classification problem for multiplier al…
In the first part of the paper, we present a short survey of the theory of multipliers, or double centralisers, of Banach algebras and completely contractive Banach algebras. Our approach is very algebraic: this is a deliberate attempt to separate essentially algebraic arguments from topological arguments. We concentrate upon the problem of how to extend module actions, and homomorphisms, from algebras to multiplier algebras. We then consider the special cases when we have a bounded approximate identity, and when our algebra is self-induced. In the second part of the paper, we mainly concentra…
We study multiplier algebras for a large class of Banach algebras which contains the group algebra $L_1(G)$, the Beurling algebras $L_1(G, ω)$, and the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ of a locally compact group $G$. This study yields numerous new results and unifies some existing theorems on $L_1(G)$ and $A(G)$ through an abstract Banach algebraic approach. Applications are obtained on representations of multipliers over locally compact quantum groups and on topological centre problems. In particular, five open problems in abstract harmonic analysis are solved.
For a locally compact group $G$ we look at the group algebras $C_0(G)$ and $C_r^*(G)$, and we let $f\in C_0(G)$ act on $L^2(G)$ by the multiplication operator $M(f)$. We show among other things that the following properties are equivalent: 1. $G$ has a compact open subgroup. 2. One of the $C^*$-algebras has a dense multiplier Hopf $^*$-subalgebra (which turns out to be unique). 3. There are non-zero elements $a\in C_r^*(G)$ and $f\in C_0(G)$ such that $aM(f)$ has finite rank. 4. There are non-zero elements $a\in C_r^*(G)$ and $f\in C_0(G)$ such that $aM(f)=M(f)a$. If $G$ is abelian, these prop…
We introduce the Jordan-strict topology on the multipliers algebra of a JB$^*$-algebra, a notion which was missing despite the fourty years passed after the first studies on Jordan multipliers. In case that a C$^*$-algebra $A$ is regarded as a JB$^*$-algebra, the J-strict topology of $M(A)$ is precisely the well-studied C$^*$-strict topology. We prove that every JB$^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$ is J-strict dense in its multipliers algebra $M(\mathfrak{A})$, and that latter algebra is J-strict complete. We show that continuous surjective Jordan homomorphisms, triple homomorphisms, and orthogonalit…
Multipliers of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces can be characterized in terms of positivity of $n \times n$ matrices analogous to the classical Pick matrix. We study for which reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces it suffices to consider matrices of bounded size $n$. We connect this problem to the notion of subhomogeneity of non-selfadjoint operator algebras. Our main results show that multiplier algebras of many Hilbert spaces of analytic functions, such as the Dirichlet space and the Drury-Arveson space, are not subhomogeneous, and hence one has to test Pick matrices of arbitrarily large matrix…
For a collection of reproducing kernels k which includes those for the Hardy space of the polydisk and ball and for the Bergman space, k is a complete Pick kernel if and only if the multiplier algebra of the Hilbert space H^2(k) associated to k has the Douglas property. Consequences for solving the operator equation AX=Y are examined.
We introduce multidimensional Schur multipliers and characterise them generalising well known results by Grothendieck and Peller. We define a multidimensional version of the two dimensional operator multipliers studied recently by Kissin and Shulman. The multidimensional operator multipliers are defined as elements of the minimal tensor product of several C*-algebras satisfying certain boundedness conditions. In the case of commutative C*-algebras, the multidimensional operator multipliers reduce to continuous multidimensional Schur multipliers. We show that the multipliers with respect to som…
In this paper we establish the $L^p$-$L^q$ boundedness of Fourier multipliers on locally compact separable unimodular groups for the range of indices $1<p\leq 2 \leq q<\infty$. Our approach is based on the operator algebras techniques. The result depends on a version of the Hausdorff-Young-Paley inequality that we establish on general locally compact separable unimodular groups. In particular, the obtained result implies the corresponding Hörmander's Fourier multiplier theorem on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and the corresponding known results for Fourier multipliers on compact Lie groups.
We develop a duality theory for multiplier Banach-Hopf algebras over a non-Archimedean field K. As examples, we consider algebras corresponding to discrete groups and zero-dimensional locally compact groups with K-valued Haar measure, as well as algebras of operators generated by regular representations of discrete groups.
We continue the investigation of the isomorphism problem for multiplier algebras of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces with the complete Nevanlinna-Pick property. In contrast to previous work in this area, we do not study these spaces by identifying them with restrictions of a universal space, namely the Drury-Arveson space. Instead, we work directly with the Hilbert spaces and their reproducing kernels. In particular, we show that two multiplier algebras of Nevanlinna-Pick spaces on the same set are equal if and only if the Hilbert spaces are equal. Most of the article is devoted to the study …
The notion of a multiplier of a group X is generalized to that of a C*-multiplier by allowing it to have values in an arbitrary C*-algebra A. On the other hand, the notion of the action of X in A is generalized to that of a projective action of X as linear transformations of the space of continuous functions with compact support in X and with values in A. It is shown that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between C*-multipliers and projective actions. C*-multipliers have been used to define twisted group algebras. On the other hand, the projective action tau can be used to construct the…
Using ultrapowers of $C^{\ast}$-algebras we provide a new construction of the multiplier algebra of a $C^{\ast}$-algebra. This extends the work of Avsec and Goldbring [Houston J. Math., to appear, arXiv:1610.09276.] to the setting of noncommutative and nonseparable $C^{\ast}$-algebras. We also extend their work to give a new proof of the fact that groups that act transitively on locally finite trees with boundary amenable stabilizers are boundary amenable.
A fundamental feature of quantum groups is that many come in pairs of mutually dual objects, like finite-dimensional Hopf algebras and their duals, or quantisations of function algebras and of universal enveloping algebras of Poisson-Lie groups. The same phenomenon was studied for quantum groupoids in various settings. In the purely algebraic setup, the construction of a dual object was given by Schauenburg and by Kadison and Szlachányi, but required the quantum groupoid to be finite with respect to the base. A sophisticated duality for measured quantum groupoids was developed by Enock, Lesieu…
We investigate Fourier multipliers on the compact dual of arbitrary discrete groups. Our main result is a Hörmander-Mihlin multiplier theorem for finite-dimensional cocycles with optimal smoothness condition. We also find Littlewood-Paley type inequalities in group von Neumann algebras, prove $L_p$ estimates for noncommutative Riesz transforms and characterize $L_\infty \to \mathrm{BMO}$ boundedness for radial Fourier multipliers. The key novelties of our approach are to exploit group cocycles and cross products in Fourier multiplier theory in conjunction with BMO spaces associated to semigrou…
We show that the multiplier algebra of the Fourier algebra on a locally compact group $G$ can be isometrically represented on a direct sum on non-commutative $L^p$ spaces associated to the right von Neumann algebra of $G$. If these spaces are given their canonical Operator space structure, then we get a completely isometric representation of the completely bounded multiplier algebra. We make a careful study of the non-commutative $L^p$ spaces we construct, and show that they are completely isometric to those considered recently by Forrest, Lee and Samei; we improve a result about module homomo…
In this paper, we discuss spectral properties of Laplacians associated with an arbitrary smooth distribution on a compact manifold. First, we give a survey of results on generalized smooth distributions on manifolds, Riemannian structures and associated Laplacians. Then, under the assumption that the singular foliation generated by the distribution is regular, we prove that the Laplacian associated with the distribution defines an unbounded multiplier on the foliation $C^*$-algebra. To this end, we give the construction of a parametrix.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of multiplier of a Hilbert algebra. The space of bounded multipliers is a semifinite von Neumann algebra isomorphic to the left von Neumann algebra of the Hilbert algebra, as expected. However, in the unbounded setting, the space of multipliers has the structure of a *-algebra with nice properties concerning commutant and affiliation: it is a pre-GW*-algebra. And this correspondence between Hilbert algebras and its multipliers is functorial. Then, we can endow the Hilbert algebra with a nice topology constructed from unbounded multipliers. As we can see f…
We study the ideals of the closure of the polynomial multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space. Structural results are obtained by investigating the relation between an ideal and its weak-$*$ closure, much in the spirit of the corresponding classical facts for the disc algebra. Zero sets for multipliers are also considered and are deeply intertwined with the structure of ideals. Our approach is primarily based on duality arguments.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group and $p,q\in \mathbb{R}$ with $p>1$ $p\not=2$ and $q$ between $2$ and $p$ (if $p<2$ then $p<q<2$, if $p>2$ then $2<q<p.$) The main result of the paper is that $A_q(G)$ multiplies $A_p(G)$, more precisely we show that the Banach algebra $A_p(G)$is a Banach module on $A_q(G).$
In a previous paper we showed how the main theorems characterizing operator algebras and operator modules, fit neatly into the framework of the `noncommutative Shilov boundary', and more particularly via the left multiplier operator algebra of an operator space. As well as giving new characterization theorems, the approach of that paper allowed many of the hypotheses of the earlier theorems to be eliminated. Recent progress of the author with Effros and Zarikian now enables weak*-versions of these characterization theorems. For example, we prove a result analogous to Sakai's famous characteriz…
Let $(A,Δ)$ be a locally compact quantum group and $(A_0,Δ_0)$ a regular multiplier Hopf algebra. We show that if $(A_0,Δ_0)$ can in some sense be imbedded in $(A,Δ)$, then $A_0$ will inherit some of the analytic structure of $A$. Under certain conditions on the imbedding, we will be able to conclude that $(A_0,Δ_0)$ is actually an algebraic quantum group with a full analytic structure. The techniques used to show this, can be applied to obtain the analytic structure of a $^*$-algebraic quantum group {\it in a purely algebraic fashion}. Moreover, the {\it reason} that this analytic structure e…
In this paper we introduce the notion of multiplier of a Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast }$-bimodule and we investigate the structure of the multiplier bimodule of a Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast}$-bimodule. We also investigate the relationship between the crossed product $A\times _{X}\mathbb{Z}$ of a pro-$% C^{\ast }$-algebra $A$ by a Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast }$-bimodule $X$ over $A$, the crossed product $M(A)\times _{M(X)}\mathbb{Z}$ of the multiplier algebra $M(A)$ of $A$ by the multiplier bimodule $M(X)$ of $X$ and the multiplier algebra $M(A\times _{X}\mathbb{Z})$ of $A\times _{X}\mathbb{Z}$.
Suppose $\fA$ is an algebra of operators on a Hilbert space $H$ and $A_1,..., A_n \in \fA$. If the row operator $[A_1,..., A_n] \in B(H^{(n)},H)$ has a right inverse in $B(H, H^{(n)})$, the Toeplitz corona problem for $\fA$ asks if a right inverse can be found with entries in $\fA$. When $H$ is a complete Nevanlinna-Pick space and $\fA$ is a weakly-closed algebra of multiplication operators on $H$, we show that under a stronger hypothesis, the corona problem for $\fA$ has a solution. When $\fA$ is the full multiplier algebra of $H$, the Toeplitz corona theorems of Arveson, Schubert and Ball-Tr…
Consider two non-degenerate algebras B and C over the complex numbers. We study a certain class of idempotent elements E in the multiplier algebra of the tensor product of B with C, called separability idempotents. The conditions include the existence of non-degenerate anti-homomorphisms from B to M(C) and from C to M(B), the multiplier algebras of C and B respectively. They are called the antipodal maps. There also exist what we call distinguished linear functionals. They are unique and faithful in the regular case. The notion is more restrictive than what is generally considered in the case …
We define the local multiplier module of a Hilbert module in analogy to the local multiplier algebra for $C^*$-algebras. We use properties of the local multiplier module to lift non-closed actions on $C^*$-algebras by Hilbert bimodules to closed actions on local multiplier algebras, and descend known results on such closed actions down to their unclosed counterparts. We define aperiodic dynamical inclusions and characterise them as crossed products by inverse semigroup actions. We describe the slice structure for such inclusions and show that all slices arise as linear combinations of slices a…
Let G be a locally compact group L^p(G) be the usual L^p-space for 1 =< p =< infty and A(G) be the Fourier algebra of G. Our goal is to study, in a new abstract context, the completely bounded multipliers of A(G), which we denote M_{cb}A(G). We show that M_{cb}A(G) can be characterised as the ``invariant part'' of the space of (completely) bounded normal L^{infty}(G)-bimodule maps on B(L^2(G)), the space of bounded operator on L^2(G). In doing this we develop a function theoretic description of the normal L^{infty}(X,mu)-bimodule maps on B(L^2(X,mu)), which we denote by V^{infty}(X,μ), and nam…
A weak multiplier Hopf algebra is a pair (A,Δ) of a non-degenerate idempotent algebra A and a coproduct $Δ$ on A. The coproduct is a coassociative homomorphism from A to the multiplier algebra M(A\otimes A) with some natural extra properties (like the existence of a counit). Further we impose extra but natural conditions on the ranges and the kernels of the canonical maps T_1 and T_2 defined from A\otimes A to M(A\otimes A) by T_1(a\otimes b)=Δ(a)(1\otimes b) and T_2(a\ot b)=(a\otimes 1)Δ(b). The first condition is about the ranges of these maps. It is assumed that there exists an idempotent e…
We consider a number of examples of multiplier algebras on Hilbert spaces associated to discs embedded into a complex ball in order to examine the isomorphism problem for multiplier algebras on complete Nevanlinna-Pick reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. In particular, we exhibit uncountably many discs in the ball of $\ell^2$ which are multiplier biholomorphic but have non-isomorphic multiplier algebras. We also show that there are closed discs in the ball of $\ell^2$ which are varieties, and examine their multiplier algebras. In finite balls, we provide a counterpoint to a result of Alpay, Put…
Let $(M_i)_{i}$ be a (finite or infinite) family of finite von Neumann algebras with a common subalgebra $P$. When $φ:\IN\rightarrow\IC$ is a function, we define the radial multiplier $M_φ$ on the amalgamated free product $M=M_1\free_P M_2\free_P\ldots$ setting $M_φ(x)=φ(n)x$ for every reduced expression $x$ of length $n$. In this paper we give a sufficient condition on $φ$ to ensure that the corresponding radial multiplier $M_φ$ is a completely bounded map, and moreover we give an upper bound on its completely bounded norm. Our condition on $φ$ does not depend on the choice of von Neumann alg…
Let $G$ be a {\it finite group}. Consider the algebra $A$ of all complex functions on G (with pointwise product). Define a coproduct $Δ$ on A by $Δ(f)(p,q)=f(pq)$ where $f\in A$ and $p,q\in G$. Then $(A,Δ)$ is a Hopf algebra. If $G$ is only a {\it groupoid}, so that the product of two elements is not always defined, one still can consider $A$ and define $Δ(f)(p,q)$ as above when $pq$ is defined. If we let $Δ(f)(p,q)=0$ otherwise, we still get a coproduct on $A$, but $Δ(1)$ will no longer be the identity in $A\ot A$. The pair $(A,Δ)$ is not a Hopf algebra but a weak Hopf algebra. If $G$ is a {\…
