Let $H$ be a subgroup of a group $G$. We say that $H$ satisfies the power condition with respect to $G$, or $H$ is a power subgroup of $G$, if there exists a non-negative integer $m$ such that $H=G^{m}=<g^{m} | g \in G >$. In this note, the following theorem is proved: Let $G$ be a group and $k$ the number of non-power subgroups of $G$. Then (1) $k=0$ if and only if $G$ is a cyclic group(theorem of F. Sz$\acute{a}$sz) ;(2) $0 < k <\infty$ if and only if $G$ is a finite non-cyclic group; (3) $k=\infty$ if and only if $G$ is a infinte non-cyclic group. Thus we get a new criterion for the finite non-cyclic groups.
Let G be a finite group, p a fixed prime and P a Sylow p-subgroup of G. In this short note we prove that if p is odd, G is p-nilpotent if and only if P controls fusion of cyclic groups of order p. For the case p=2, we show that G is p-nilpotent if and only if P controls fusion of cyclic groups of order 2 and 4.
In this paper we introduce and study the concept of cyclic subgroup commutativity degree of a finite group $G$. This quantity measures the probability of two random cyclic subgroups of $G$ commuting. Explicit formulas are obtained for some particular classes of groups. A criterion for a finite group to be an Iwasawa group is also presented.
Marius Tărnăuceanu described the finite groups $G$ having $|G|-1$ cyclic subgroups. We describe the finite groups $G$ having $|G|-Δ$ cyclic subgroups for $Δ=2, 3, 4$ and $5$.
In this article we give an order-dividing bijective function between cyclic and non cyclic groups of finite order. In particular, we prove that there exists a bijective function from D_{2n} to Z_{2n} for any natural integer n; and from Z_p x Z_k to Z_{pk} when p is an odd prime and k is not a multiple of p.
In this paper we introduce and study the concept of cyclic factorization number of a finite group G. By using the Mobius inversion formula and other methods involving the cyclic subgroup structure, this is explicitly computed for some important classes of finite groups.
Tărnăuceanu described the finite groups $G$ having exactly $|G|-1$ cyclic subgroups. In "Finite Groups with a Prescribed Number of Cyclic Subgroups,", we used elementary methods to completely characterize those finite groups $G$ having exactly $|G|-Δ$ cyclic subgroups for $Δ=2, 3, 4$ and $5$. In this paper, we prove that for any $Δ>0$ if $G$ has exactly $|G|-Δ$ cyclic subgroups, then $|G|\le 8Δ$ and therefore the number of such $G$ is finite. We then use the computer program GAP to find all $G$ with exactly $|G|-Δ$ cyclic subgroups for $Δ=1,\ldots,32$.
In this note, we show that among finite nilpotent groups of a given order or finite groups of a given odd order, the cyclic group of that order has the minimum number of edges in its cyclic subgroup graph. We also conjecture that this holds for arbitrary finite groups.
In this paper we introduce and study the relative cyclic subgroup commutativity degrees of a finite group. We show that there is a finite group with $n$ such degrees for all $n \in \mathbb{N}^*\setminus \lbrace 2\rbrace$ and we indicate some classes of finite groups with few relative cyclic subgroup commutativity degrees. Using this new concept, we are able to show that the set containing all cyclic subgroup commutativity degrees of finite groups is not dense in $[0, 1]$.
We introduce and study the concept of cyclicity degree of a finite group $G$. This quantity measures the probability of a random subgroup of $G$ to be cyclic. Explicit formulas are obtained for some particular classes of finite groups. An asymptotic formula and several minimality/maximality results on cyclicity degrees are also inferred.
Slattery (2007) described computational methods to enumerate, construct, and identify finite groups of squarefree order. We generalise Slattery's result to the class of finite groups that have cyclic Sylow subgroups and provide an implementation for the computer algebra system GAP.
We study finite capable $p$-groups $G$ of nilpotency class 2 such that the commutator subgroup $γ_2(G)$ of $G$ is cyclic and the center of $G$ is contained in the Frattini subgroup of $G$.
In this note, we give a new formula for the number of cyclic subgroups of a finite abelian group. This is based on applying the Burnside's lemma to a certain group action. Also, it generalizes the well-known Menon's identity.
Let $G$ be a free-by-cyclic group or a 2-dimensional right-angled Artin group. We provide an algebraic and a geometric characterization for when each aspherical simplicial complex with fundamental group isomorphic to $G$ has minimal volume entropy equal to 0. In the nonvanishing case, we provide a positive lower bound to the minimal volume entropy of an aspherical simplicial complex of minimal dimension for these two classes of groups. Our results rely upon a criterion for the vanishing of the minimal volume entropy for 2-dimensional groups with uniform uniform exponential growth. This criteri…
Denote the sum of element orders in a finite group $G$ by $ψ(G)$ and let $C_n$ denote the cyclic group of order $n$. In this paper, we prove that if $|G|=n$ and $ψ(G)>\frac{13}{21}\,ψ(C_n)$, then $G$ is nilpotent. Moreover, we have $ψ(G)=\frac{13}{21}\,ψ(C_n)$ if and only if $n=6m$ with $(6,m)=1$ and $G\cong S_3\times C_m$. Two interesting consequences of this result are also presented.
We verify the inductive blockwise Alperin weight (BAW) and the inductive Alperin-McKay (AM) conditions introduced by the second author for blocks of finite quasisimple groups with cyclic defect groups. Furthermore we establish a criterion that describes conditions under which the inductive AM condition for blocks with abelian defect groups implies the inductive BAW condition for those blocks.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $α(G)=\frac{|C(G)|}{|G|}$\,, where $C(G)$ denotes the set of cyclic subgroups of $G$. In this short note, we prove that $α(G)\leqα(Z(G))$ and we describe the groups $G$ for which the equality occurs. This gives some sufficient conditions for a finite group to be $4$-abelian or abelian.
The notion of active sum provides an analogue for groups of that of direct sum for abelian groups. One natural question then is which groups are the active sum of cyclic subgroups. Many groups have been found to give a positive answer to this question, while the case of finite metacyclic groups remained unknown. In this note we show that every finite metacyclic group can be recovered as the active sum of a discrete family of cyclic subgroups.
In this note, we classify all finite groups having exactly 6, 7 or 8 cyclic subgroups. This gives a partial answer to the open problem posed by Tarnauceanu (Amer. Math. Monthly, 122 (2015), 275-276). As a consequence of our results, we also obtain an important result concerning with the converse of Lagrange's theorem.
Recent results of Qu and Tuarnauceanu describe explicitly the finite p-groups which are not elementary abelian and have the property that the number of their subgroups is maximal among p-groups of a given order. We complement these results from the bottom level up by determining completely the non-cyclic finite p-groups whose number of subgroups among p-groups of a given order is minimal.
Given a group G, we consider its classifying space for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups. We show for many groups, including for example, one-relator groups, acylindrically hyperbolic groups, 3-manifold groups and CAT(0) cube groups, that they do not admit a finite model for this classifying space unless they are virtually cyclic. This settles a conjecture due to Juan-Pineda and Leary for these classes of groups.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $ψ(G) = \sum_{g \in G} o(g)$, where $o(g)$ denotes the order of $g \in G$. In [M. Herzog, et. al., Two new criteria for solvability of finite groups, J. Algebra, 2018], the authors put forward the following conjecture: \textbf{Conjecture.} \textit{If $G$ is a group of order $n$ and $ψ(G)>211ψ(C_n)/1617 $, where $C_n$ is the cyclic group of order $n$, then $G$ is solvable.} In this paper we prove the validity of this conjecture.
Let $G$ be a finite group, $L_1(G)$ be its poset of cyclic subgroups and consider the quantity $α(G)=\frac{|L_1(G)|}{|G|}$. The aim of this paper is to study the class $\cal{C}$ of finite nilpotent groups having $α(G)=\frac{3}{4}$. We show that if $G$ belongs to this class, then it is a 2-group satisfying certain conditions. Also, we study the appartenance of some classes of finite groups to $\cal{C}$.
This paper is a significant part of a general project aimed to classify all irreducible representations of finite quasi-simple groups over an algebraically closed field, in which the image of at least one element is represented by an almost cyclic matrix. (A square matrix $M$ is called almost cyclic if it is similar to a block-diagonal matrix with two blocks, such that one block is scalar and another block is a matrix whose minimum and characteristic polynomials coincide. Reflections and transvections are examples of almost cyclic matrices. The paper focuses on the Weil representations of fini…
We obtain a classification of the finite two-generated cyclic-by-abelian groups of prime-power order. For that we associate to each such group $G$ a list $\inv(G)$ of numerical group invariants which determines the isomorphism type of $G$. Then we describe the set formed by all the possible values of $\inv(G)$. This allows computer implementations for constructing all the finite-two generated cyclic-by-abelian groups of a given prime-power order, computing the invariants of such a group, and to decide whether two such groups are isomorphic.
A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is called $\mathbb P$-subnormal in $G$ whenever either $H=G$ or there is a chain of subgroups $H=H_0\subset H_1\subset ... \subset H_n=G$ such that $|H_i:H_{i-1}|$ is a prime for all $i$. In this paper, we study the groups in which all primary cyclic subgroups are $\mathbb P$-subnormal.
Let $G$ be a finite group of odd order, $\F$ a finite field of odd characteristic $p$ and $\B$ a finite--dimensional symplectic $\F G$-module. We show that $\B$ is $\F G$-hyperbolic, i.e., it contains a self--perpendicular $\F G$-submodule, iff it is $\F N$-hyperbolic for every cyclic subgroup $N$ of $G$.
A group G is almost cyclic if there is an element x in G, such that for all g in G, there is an element y in G and an integer n with ygy^{-1} = x^n (that is, every element is conjugate to some power of x). W. Ziller asked whether there are finitely-presented almost cyclic groups which are not cyclic in connection with work on closed geodesics. V. Guba constructed an infinite (non-cyclic) finitely generated almost cyclic group. The principal results of this paper are: Solvable almost cyclic groups are cyclic, and one-relator almost cyclic groups are cyclic.
We show, using Wise's equitable sets criterion, that every tubular free by cyclic group acts freely on a CAT(0) cube complex. We also show that these groups have a finite index subgroup satisfying the strongest Tits alternative, which means that every subgroup either surjects a non abelian free group or is torsion free abelian. In particular the Gersten group is the first known group virtually having this property but which is not virtually special nor virtually residually free.
Free products of two residually finite groups with amalgamated retracts are considered. It is proved that a cyclic subgroup of such a group is not finitely separable if, and only if, it is conjugated with a subgroup of a free factor which is not finitely separable in this factor. A similar result is obtained for the case of separability in the class of finite p-groups.
A Schur ring (S-ring) over a group $G$ is called separable if every of its similaritities is induced by isomorphism. We establish a criterion for an S-ring to be separable in the case when the group $G$ is cyclic. Using this criterion, we prove that any S-ring over a cyclic $p$-group is separable and that the class of separable circulant S-rings is closed with respect to duality.
Let $G$ be a finite group and let $c(G)$ be the number of cyclic subgroups of $G$. We study the function $α(G) = c(G)/|G|$. We explore its basic properties and we point out a connection with the probability of commutation. For many families $\mathscr{F}$ of groups we characterize the groups $G \in \mathscr{F}$ for which $α(G)$ is maximal and we classify the groups $G$ for which $α(G) > 3/4$. We also study the number of cyclic subgroups of a direct power of a given group deducing an asymptotic result and we characterize the equality $α(G) = α(G/N)$ when $G/N$ is a symmetric group.
Here we study some algebraic properties of non-cyclic graphs. In this paper we show that $\overlineΓ_G$ is isomorphic to $K_3\cup (n-4)K_1$ or $K_4\cup (n-5)K_1$ if and only if $G$ is isomorphic to $D_8$ or $D_{10}$, respectively. We characterize all groups of order $n$ like $G$ in which $γ(Γ_G)+γ(\overlineΓ_G)\in \{n, n-1, n-2, n-3\}$, where $|Cyc(G)|=1$.
Let $G$ be a finite non-cyclic group. The non-cyclic graph $Γ_G$ of $G$ is the graph whose vertex set is $G\setminus Cyc(G)$, two distinct vertices being adjacent if they do not generate a cyclic subgroup, where $Cyc(G)=\{a\in G: \langle a,b\rangle\ \text{is cyclic for each } b\in G\}$. In this paper, we classify all finite non-cyclic groups $G$ such that $Γ_G$ has (non)orientable genus one.
By studying commensurators of virtually cyclic groups, we prove that every elementary amenable group of finite Hirsch length h and cardinality aleph-n admits a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers of dimension n+h+2. We also provide a criterion for groups that fit into an extension with torsion-free quotient to admit a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers. Finally, we exhibit examples of integral linear groups of type F whose geometric dimension for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups is finite but arbitrarily larger than…
We construct a finitely presented non-amenable group without free non-cyclic subgroups thus providing a finitely presented counterexample to von Neumann's problem. Our group is an extension of a group of finite exponent n >> 1 by a cyclic group, so it satisfies the identity [x,y]^n = 1.
By examining commensurators of virtually cyclic groups, we show that for each natural number n, any locally finite-by-virtually cyclic group of cardinality aleph_n admits a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers of dimension n+3. As a corollary, we prove that every elementary amenable group of finite Hirsch length and cardinality aleph_n admits a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers.
We prove by using simple number-theoretic arguments formulae concerning the number of elements of a fixed order and the number of cyclic subgroups of a direct product of several finite cyclic groups. We point out that certain multiplicative properties of related counting functions for finite Abelian groups are immediate consequences of these formulae.
Let $G$ be a finite group with a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$. We prove that the principal $p$-blocks of $G$ and $N_G(P)$ are perfectly isometric under the assumption $G$ has a cyclic $p$-hyperfocal subgroup.
We show that among all finite groups of any given order, the cyclic group of that order has the maximum number of edges in its power graph. Contains corrections to published version.
We study cyclic finite Galois extensions of the rational function field of the projective line P^{1}(F_q) over a finite field F_q with q elements defined by considering quotient curves by finite subgroups of the projective linear group PGL(2,q), and we enumerate them expressing the count in terms of Stirling numbers.
We give the classification of elements - respectively cyclic subgroups - of finite order of the Cremona group, up to conjugation. Natural parametrisations of conjugacy classes, related to fixed curves of positive genus, are provided.
An element of a Coxeter group W is fully commutative if any two of its reduced decompositions are related by a series of transpositions of adjacent commuting generators. An element of a Coxeter group W is cyclically fully commutative if any of its cyclic shifts remains fully commutative. These elements were studied in Boothby et al.. In particular the authors enumerated cyclically fully commutative elements in all Coxeter groups having a finite number of them. In this work we characterize and enumerate cyclically fully commutative elements according to their Coxeter length in all finite or aff…
