In this article we give a Galois-theoretic characterization of the canonical theta structure. The Galois property of the canonical theta structure translates into certain $p$-adic theta relations which are satisfied by the canonical theta null point of the canonical lift. As an application we give a purely algebraic proof of some 2-adic theta identities which describe the set of theta null points of the canonical lifts of ordinary abelian varieties in characteristic 2. The latter theta relations are suitable for explicit canonical lifting.
Using Shimura's reciprocity law, we calculate the Galois action on the special values of theta functions associated to primitive Dirichlet characters of odd conductor, normalised by the Dedekind eta function, at the point i. As a consequence, we prove some experimental results of Cohen and Zagier and we deduce a partial result on the non-vanishing of these special theta values with prime conductor.
We describe the effect of the differential operators defined by Boecherer-Nagaoka, Flander-Ghitza and Yamauchi on the Galois representations (conjecturally) attached to Siegel modular eigenforms.
Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime, and let $f$ be a cuspidal eigenform of weight at least $2$ and level coprime to $p$ of finite slope $α$. Let $\barρ_f$ denote the mod $p$ Galois representation associated with $f$ and $ω$ the mod $p$ cyclotomic character. Under an assumption on the weight of $f$, we prove that there exists a cuspidal eigenform $g$ of weight at least $2$ and level coprime to $p$ of slope $α+1$ such that $$\barρ_f \otimes ω\simeq \barρ_g,$$ up to semisimplification. The proof uses Hida-Coleman families and the theta operator acting on overconvergent forms. The structure of the reductions…
Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois extension of local or global fields in characteristic $0$ or $p$ with nonabelian Galois group $G$, and let ${\mathfrak B}$ be a $G$-stable fractional ideal of $L$. We show that ${\mathfrak B}$ is free over its associated order in $K[G]$ if and only if it is free over its associated order in the Hopf algebra giving the canonical nonclassical Hopf-Galois structure on the extension.
The Stickelberger elements attached to an abelian extension of number fields conjecturally participate, under certain conditions, in annihilator relations involving higher algebraic K-groups. In [Victor P. Snaith, Stark's conjecture and new Stickelberger phenomena, Canad. J. Math. 58 (2) (2006) 419--448], Snaith introduces canonical Galois modules hoped to appear in annihilator relations generalising and improving those involving Stickelberger elements. In this paper we study the first of these modules, corresponding to the classical Stickelberger element, and prove a connection with the Stark…
We consider the classical theta operator $θ$ on modular forms modulo $p^m$ and level $N$ prime to $p$ where $p$ is a prime greater than 3. Our main result is that $θ$ mod $p^m$ will map forms of weight $k$ to forms of weight $k+2+2p^{m-1}(p-1)$ and that this weight is optimal in certain cases when $m$ is at least 2. Thus, the natural expectation that $θ$ mod $p^m$ should map to weight $k+2+p^{m-1}(p-1)$ is shown to be false. The primary motivation for this study is that application of the $θ$ operator on eigenforms mod $p^m$ corresponds to twisting the attached Galois representations with the …
Let X be a smooth projective curve of positive genus defined over a number field K. Assume given a Galois covering map x from X to the projective line over K and a place v of K. We introduce a local canonical height on the set of K_v-valued points of X associated to x as an integral with logarithmic integrand, generalizing Tate's local Neron function on an elliptic curve. The resulting global height can be viewed as a 'Mahler measure' associated to x. We prove that the local canonical height can be obtained by averaging, and taking a limit, over divisors of higher order Weierstrass points on X…
Let F be a field containing a primitive pth root of unity, and let U be an open normal subgroup of index p of the absolute Galois group G_F of F. Using the Bloch-Kato Conjecture we determine the structure of the cohomology group H^n(U,Fp) as an Fp[G_F/U]-module for all n in N. Previously this structure was known only for n=1, and until recently the structure even of H^1(U,Fp) was determined only for F a local field, a case settled by Borevic and Faddeev in the 1960s. We apply these results to study partial Euler-Poincare characteristics of open subgroups N of the maximal pro-p quotient T of G_…
Let K/Q be Galois and let eta in K* be such that the multiplicative Z[G]-module generated by eta is of Z-rank n.We define the local theta-regulators Delta\_p^theta(eta) in F\_p for the Q\_p-irreducible characters theta of G=Gal(K/Q). Let V\_theta be the theta-irreducible representation. A linear representation L^theta=delta.V\_theta is associated withDelta\_p^theta(eta) whose nullity is equivalent to delta$\ge$1 (Theorem 3.9). Each Delta\_p^theta(eta) yields Reg\_p^theta(eta) modulo p in the factorization $\prod$\_theta (Reg\_p^theta(eta))^phi(1) of Reg\_p^G(eta) := Reg\_p(eta)/p^[K : Q] (norm…
For a prime number $p$, we show that if two certain canonical finite quotients of a finitely generated Bloch-Kato pro-$p$ group $G$ coincide, then $G$ has a very simple structure, i.e., $G$ is a $p$-adic analytic pro-$p$ group. This result has a remarkable Galois-theoretic consequence: if the two corresponding canonical finite extensions $F^{(3)}/F$ and $F^{\{3\}}/F$ of a field $F$ -- with $F$ containing a primitive $p$-th root of unity -- coincide, then $F$ is $p$-rigid. The proof relies only on group-theoretic tools, and on certain properties of Bloch-Kato pro-$p$ groups.
In cyclic, degree 8 extensions of algebraic number fields $N/K$, ambiguous ideals in N are canonical $\mathbb{Z}[C_8]$-modules. Their $\mathbb{Z}[C_8]$-structure is determined here. It is described in terms of indecomposable modules and determined by ramification invariants. Although infinitely many indecomposable $\mathbb{Z}[C_8]$-modules are available (classification by Yakovlev), only 23 appear.
We develop a notion of a `canonical $\mathcal{C}$-henselian valuation' for a class $\mathcal{C}$ of field extensions, generalizing the construction of the canonical henselian valuation of a field. We use this to show that the $p$-adic valuation on a finite extension $F$ of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ can be recovered entirely (or up to some indeterminacy of the residue field) from various small quotients of $G_F$, the absolute Galois group of $F$. In particular, it can be recovered fully from the maximal solvable quotient. We use this to prove several versions of the birational section conjecture for varie…
In the 1930s Chevalley and Weil gave a formula for decomposing the canonical representation on the space of differential forms of the Galois group of a ramified Galois cover of Riemann surfaces. In this article we prove an analogous Chevalley-Weil formula for ramified Galois covers of orbifold curves. We then specialize the formula to the case when the base orbifold curve is the (reduced) modular orbifold. As an application of this latter formula we decompose the canonical representations of modular curves of full, prime level and of Fermat curves of arbitrary exponent.
In this article we compute new theta relations which define the moduli space of abelian surfaces with real multiplication by square root three. We give the locus of square root three abelian surfaces in terms of the canonical coordinates on Mumford's moduli space of abelian surfaces with theta structure. The method that we use to compute the real multiplication theta relations is of purely algebraic nature. It differs from Runge's method and recent work by Gruenewald. We expect that our method generalizes to higher discriminants.
There are two famous Abel Theorems. Most well-known is his description of abelian (analytic) functions on a one dimensional compact complex torus. The other collects together those complex tori, with their prime degree isogenies, into one space. Riemann's generalization of the first features his famous theta functions. His deepest work aimed at extending Abel's second theorem; he died before he fulfilled this. That extension is often pictured on complex higher dimension torii. For Riemann, though, it was to spaces of Jacobians of compact Riemann surfaces, W, of genus g, toward studying functio…
I give another proof of the geometric Satake equivalence from Mirkovic-Vilonen over a separably closed field. Using Galois descent, I obtain a canonical construction of the Galois form of the full $L$-group.
We classify all cubic function fields over any finite field, particularly developing a complete Galois theory which includes those cases when the constant field is missing certain roots of unity. In doing so, we find criteria which allow one to easily read ramification and splitting data from the generating equation, in analogy to the known theory for Artin-Schreier and Kummer extensions. We also describe explicit irreducibility criteria, integral bases, and Galois actions in terms of canonical generating equations.
In this article we give an algorithm for the computation of the number of rational points on the Jacobian variety of a generic ordinary hyperelliptic curve defined over a finite field of cardinality $q$ with time complexity $O(n^{2+o(1)})$ and space complexity $O(n^2)$, where $n=\log(q)$. In the latter complexity estimate the genus and the characteristic are assumed as fixed. Our algorithm forms a generalization of both, the AGM algorithm of J.-F. Mestre and the canonical lifting method of T. Satoh. We canonically lift a certain arithmetic invariant of the Jacobian of the hyperelliptic curve i…
We consider the canonical representation of the absolute Galois group of the rational numbers in the outer automorphism group of the pro-p completion of the fundamental group of the projective line minus 0,1, and infinity. Deligne has conjectured that a certain graded Z_p-Lie algebra arising from this representation becomes a free p-adic Lie algebra on one element in each odd degree starting with 3 when tensored with the Q_p. We construct good choices of these elements and use them to examine the structure of the Z_p-Lie algebra. In particular, we consider how its structure depends upon the re…
We study the properties of Eisenstein-Kronecker numbers, which are related to special values of Hecke $L$-function of imaginary quadratic fields. We prove that the generating function of these numbers is a reduced (normalized or canonical in some literature) theta function associated to the Poincare bundle of an elliptic curve. We introduce general methods to study the algebraic and $p$-adic properties of reduced theta functions for CM abelian varieties. As a corollary, when the prime $p$ is ordinary, we give a new construction of the two-variable $p$-adic measure interpolating special values …
We show that there is a canonical, order preserving map $ψ$ of lattices of subgroups, which maps the lattice $\Sub(A)$ of subgroups of the ideal class group of a galois number field $\K$ into the lattice $\Sub(\KH/\K)$ of subfields of the Hilbert class field. Furthermore, this map is a capitulation map in the sense that all the primes in the classes of $A' \subset A$ capitulate in $ψ(A')$. In particular we have a new, strong version of the generalized Hilbert 94 Theorem, which confirms the result of Myiake and adds more structure to (part) of the capitulation kernel of subfields of $\KH$.
We investigate the nature of divergences in quantum field theory, showing that they are organized in the structure of a certain `` motivic Galois group'', which is uniquely determined and universal with respect to the set of physical theories. The renormalization group can be identified canonically with a one parameter subgroup. The group is obtained through a Riemann-Hilbert correspondence. Its representations classify equisingular flat vector bundles, where the equisingularity condition is a geometric formulation of the fact that in quantum field theory the counterterms are independent of th…
