We investigate the nature of divergences in quantum field theory, showing that they are organized in the structure of a certain `` motivic Galois group'', which is uniquely determined and universal with respect to the set of physical theories. The renormalization group can be identified canonically with a one parameter subgroup. The group is obtained through a Riemann-Hilbert correspondence. Its representations classify equisingular flat vector bundles, where the equisingularity condition is a geometric formulation of the fact that in quantum field theory the counterterms are independent of the choice of a unit of mass. As an algebraic group scheme, it is a semi-direct product by the multiplicative group of a pro-unipotent group scheme whose Lie algebra is freely generated by one generator in each positive integer degree. There is a universal singular frame in which all divergences disappear. When computed as iterated integrals, its coefficients are certain rational numbers that appear in the local index formula of Connes-Moscovici. When working with formal Laurent series over the field of rational numbers, the data of equisingular flat vector bundles define a Tannakian category whose properties are reminiscent of a category of mixed Tate motives.
We establish a precise relation between Galois theory in its motivic form with the mathematical theory of perturbative renormalization (in the minimal subtraction scheme with dimensional regularization). We identify, through a Riemann-Hilbert correspondence based on the Birkhoff decomposition and the t'Hooft relations, a universal symmetry group (the "cosmic Galois group" suggested by Cartier), which contains the renormalization group and acts on the set of physical theories. This group is closely related to motivic Galois theory. We construct a universal singular frame of geometric nature, in…
We show that the level 2 case of the cyclotomic Grothendieck-Teichmüller groups introduced by Enriquez coincides with the motivic Galois group of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}[1/2]$.
In this paper we introduce confluence relations for motivic Euler sums (also called alternating multiple zeta values) and show that all linear relations among motivic Euler sums are exhausted by the confluence relations. This determines all automorphisms of the de Rham fundamental groupoid of $\mathbb{P}^{1}\setminus\{0,\pm1,\infty\}$ coming from the action of the motivic Galois group of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}[1/2]$. Moreover, we also discuss other applications of the confluence relations such as an explicit $\mathbb{Q}$-linear expansion of a given motivic Euler sum by their basis…
Let $m$ be an integer such that $m \geq 7$ and $m \equiv 0,1,7 \mod 8$. We construct strictly compatible systems of representations of $Γ_{\mathbb Q} \to \mathrm{Spin}_m(\overline{\mathbb Q}_l) \xrightarrow{\mathrm{spin}} \mathrm{GL}_N(\overline{\mathbb Q}_l)$ that is potentially automorphic and motivic. As an application, we prove instances of the inverse Galois problem for the $\mathbb F_p$--points of the spin groups. For odd $m$, we compare our examples with the work of A. Kret and S. W. Shin, which studies automorphic Galois representations valued in $\mathrm{Spin}_m$.
Let $L/F$ be a finite Galois extension of number fields with an arbitrary Galois group $G$. We give an explicit description of the kernel of the natural map on motivic tame kernels $H^2_{\mathcal{M}}(o_L, {\bf Z}(i))_{G} {\rightarrow} H^2_{\mathcal{M}}(o_F, {\bf Z}(i))$. Using the link between motivic cohomology and $K$-theory, we deduce genus formulae for all even $K$-groups $K_{2i-2}(o_F)$ of the ring of integers. As a by-product, we also obtain lower bounds for the order of the kernel and cokernel of the functorial map $H^2_{\mathcal{M}}(F, {\bf Z}(i)) \rightarrow H^2_{\mathcal{M}}( L, {\bf…
In the first part of this paper we study the coaction dual to the action of the cosmic Galois group on the motivic lift of the sunrise Feynman integral with generic masses and momenta, and we express its conjugates in terms of motivic lifts of Feynman integrals associated to related Feynman graphs. Only one of the conjugates of the motivic lift of the sunrise, other than itself, can be expressed in terms of motivic lifts of Feynman integrals of subquotient graphs. To relate the remaining conjugates to Feynman integrals we introduce a general tool: subdiving edges of a graph. We show that all m…
Let T be a Tannakian category over a field k of characteristic 0 and π(T) its fundamental group. In this paper we prove that there is a bijection between the otimes-equivalence classes of Tannakian subcategories of T and the normal affine group sub-T-schemes of π(T). We apply this result to the Tannakian category T_1(k) generated by motives of niveau \leq 1 defined over k, whose fundamental group is called the motivic Galois group G_mot(T_1(k)) of motives of niveau \leq 1. We find four short exact sequences of affine group sub-T_1(k)-schemes of G_mot(T_1(k)), correlated one to each other by in…
Pink has given a qualitative answer to the Mumford-Tate conjecture for Drinfeld modules in the 90s. He showed that the image of the v-adic Galois representation is v-adically open in the motivic Galois group for any prime v. In contrast to this result, we provide a family of uniformizable Anderson t-modules for which the Galois representations of their t-adic Tate-modules are "far from" having t-adically open image in their motivic Galois groups. Nevertheless, the image is still Zariski-dense in the motivic Galois group which is in accordance to the Mumford-Tate conjecture. For the proof, we e…
We study Galois descents for categories of mixed Tate motives over $\mathcal{O}_{N}[1/N]$, for $N\in \left\{2, 3, 4, 8\right\}$ or $\mathcal{O}_{N}$ for $N=6$, with $\mathcal{O}_{N}$ the ring of integers of the $N^{\text{th}}$ cyclotomic field, and construct families of motivic iterated integrals with prescribed properties. In particular this gives a basis of honorary multiple zeta values (linear combinations of iterated integrals at roots of unity $μ_{N}$ which are multiple zeta values). It also gives a new proof, via Goncharov's coproduct, of Deligne's results: the category of mixed Tate mot…
We investigate geometric and combinatorial aspects of the mysterious relationship between the action of the motivic Galois group on the motivic fundamental group of the projective line punctured at zero, infinity, and N-th roots of unity, and the geometry of modular manifolds for the congruence subgroup Y(m;N) of GL(m,Z) fixing (0, ... , 0, 1) modulo N. To achieve this, we consider a canonical collection of elements in the image of the motivic Galois Lie algebra, spanning it over Q. These elements are the motivic correlators at N-th roots of unity. We assign to them chains in the complex compu…
Recently S. Laporta published a partial result on the fourth order QED contribution to the electron anomalous magnetic moment $g-2$. This result contains explicit polylogarithmic parts with fourth and sixth roots of unity. In this note we convert Laporta's result into the motivic `$f$ alphabet'. This provides a much shorter expression which makes the Galois structure visible. We conjecture the $Q$ vector spaces of Galois conjugates of the QED $g-2$ up to weight four. The conversion into the $f$ alphabet relies on a conjecture by D. Broadhurst that iterated integrals in certain Lyndon words pro…
In this thesis, following F. Brown's point of view, we look at the Hopf algebra structure of motivic cyclotomic multiple zeta values, which are motivic periods of the fundamental groupoid of $\mathbb{P}^{1} \diagdown \lbrace 0, μ_{N}, \infty \rbrace $. By application of a surjective \textit{period} map (which, under Grothendieck's period conjecture, is an isomorphism), we deduce results (such as generating families, identities, etc.) on cyclotomic multiple zeta values, which are complex numbers. The coaction of this Hopf algebra (explicitly given by a combinatorial formula from A. Goncharov an…
In this paper we use ideas of the non-abelian Iwasawa main conjecture to prove a result about the first Galois cohomology of continuous Galois modules V_p(j) for large Tate-twist j and V_p a Q_p vector space. We show that under a technical hypothesis that H^1(K, V_p(j)) is generated by twists of norm-compatible units in an infinite tower of number fields with elements in V_p(j-1). This confirms a consequence of the non-abelian Iwasawa main conjecture. Using the "Bloch-Kato-conjecture" a similar result is proven for motivic cohomology with finite coefficients.
We construct motivic $\ell$-adic representations of $\GQ$ into exceptional groups of type $E_7,E_8$ and $G_2$ whose image is Zariski dense. This answers a question of Serre. The construction is uniform for these groups and uses the Langlands correspondence for function fields. As an application, we solve new cases of the inverse Galois problem: the finite simple groups $E_{8}(\FF_{\ell})$ are Galois groups over $\QQ$ for large enough primes $\ell$.
Let $F$ be a number field. These notes explore Galois-theoretic, automorphic, and motivic analogues and refinements of Tate's basic result that continuous projective representations $Gal(\bar{F}/F) \to PGL_n(C)$ lift to $GL_n(C)$. We take special interest in the interaction of this result with algebraicity (on the automorphic side) and geometricity (in the sense of Fontaine-Mazur). On the motivic side, we study refinements and generalizations of the classical Kuga-Satake construction. Some auxiliary results touch on: possible infinity-types of algebraic automorphic representations; comparison …
Let $\mathbf{T}$ be a neutral Tannakian category over a field of characteristic zero with unit object $\mathbf{1}$, and equipped with a filtration $W_\cdot$ similar to the weight filtration on mixed motives. Let $M$ be an object of $\mathbf{T}$, and $\underline{\mathfrak{u}}(M)\subset W_{-1}\underline{Hom}(M,M)$ the Lie algebra of the kernel of the natural surjection from the fundamental group of $M$ to the fundamental group of $Gr^WM$. A result of Deligne gives a characterization of $\underline{\mathfrak{u}}(M)$ in terms of the extensions $0\longrightarrow W_pM \longrightarrow M \longrightarr…
We prove the equivalence between the categories of motives of rigid analytic varieties over a perfectoid field $K$ of mixed characteristic and over the associated (tilted) perfectoid field $K^{\flat}$ of equal characteristic. This can be considered as a motivic generalization of a theorem of Fontaine and Wintenberger, claiming that the Galois groups of $K$ and $K^\flat$ are isomorphic. A main tool for constructing the equivalence is Scholze's theory of perfectoid spaces.
Let M be a 1-motive defined over a field of characteristic 0. To M we can associate its motivic Galois group, G_mot(M), which is the geometrical interpretation of the Munford-Tate group of M. We prove that the unipotent radical of the Lie algebra of G_mot(M) is the semi-abelian variety defined by the adjoint action of the semi-simplified of the Lie algebra of G_mot(M) on itself.
We study the action of the Galois group on the pro-l-completion of the fundamental group of P^1 - {0, infinity and N-th roots of unity}. We describe the Lie algebra of the image of the Galois action and relate with the geometry of the modular varieties for GL_m for m = 1,2,3,... This story is the l-adic side of the motivic theory of multiple polylogarithms at roots of unity, which generalize the classical cyclotomy theory.
The torsor P_s=Hom(H_{\DR},H_s) under the motivic Galois group G_s=Aut H_s of the Tannakian category M_k generated by one-motives related by absolute Hodge cycles over a field k with an embedding s into the complex numbers is shown to be determined by its global projection [P_s\to (P_s)/(G_s)^0] to a Gal(\ov k/k)-torsor, and by its localizations (P_s) x_k (k_ξ) at a dense subset of orderings ξof the field k, provided k has virtual cohomological dimension (vcd) one. This result is an application of a recent local-global principle for connected linear algebraic groups over a field k of vcd=1.
We study the depth filtration on multiple zeta values, the motivic Galois group of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}$ and the Grothendieck-Teichmüller group, and its relation to modular forms. Using period polynomials for cusp forms for $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$, we construct an explicit Lie algebra of solutions to the linearized double shuffle equations, which gives a conjectural description of all identities between multiple zeta values modulo $ζ(2)$ and modulo lower depth. We formulate a single conjecture about the homology of this Lie algebra which implies conjectures due to Broadhurst…
We define motivic multiple polylogarithms and prove the double shuffle relations for them. We use this to study the motivic fundamental group of the multiplicative group - {N-th roots of unity} and relate it to geometry of modular varieties. In particular we get new information about the actionof the Galois group on the pro-l completion of the above fundamental group. This paper is the second part of "Multiple polylogarithms and mixed Tate motives" math.AG/0103059
We show that analytically trivial t-motifs satisfy a Tannakian duality, without restrictions on the base field, save for that it be of generic characteristic. We show that the group of components of the t-motivic Galois group coincides with the absolute Galois group of the base field.
Francis Brown used a certain evaluation formula for multiple zeta values proved by Zagier to prove the injectivity of the homomorphism from the Motivic Galois group to the automorphism of fundamental group of projective line deleted three points. In this paper, we prove that any associators satisfies this relation. As a consequence, this relation holds for motivic multiple zeta values which is also proved in Brown's paper. We used certain cohomology theory and Li's method for the computation.
We show that the statement analogous to the Mumford-Tate conjecture for abelian varieties holds for 1-motives on unipotent parts. This is done by comparing the unipotent part of the associated Hodge group and the unipotent part of the image of the absolute Galois group with the unipotent part of the motivic fundamental group. Contains an appendix by P. Deligne. In this version: Minor corrections here and there. The Main result about the image of the Galois representations is now enriched by an adelic statement.
Let $f$ be a cuspidal eigenform of weight two and level $N$, let $p\nmid N$ be a prime at which $f$ is congruent to an Eisenstein series and let $V_f$ denote the $p$-adic Tate module of $f$. Beilinson constructed a class $κ_f\in H^1(\mathbb Q,V_f(1))$ arising from the cup-product of two Siegel units and proved a striking relationship with the first derivative $L'(f,0)$ at the near central point $s=0$ of the $L$-series of $f$, which led him to formulate his celebrated conjecture. In this note we prove two congruence formulae relating the "motivic part" of $L'(f,0) \,(\mathrm{mod} \, p)$ and $L'…
We study the middle convolution of local systems and realize special linear groups as Galois groups over the rationals. In the Appendix to this paper, written jointly with Stefan Reiter, we prove the existence of a new motivic local system with $G_2$-monodromy.
In this paper we describe a connection between realizations of the action of the motivic Galois group on the motivic fundamental groups of Gaussian and Eisenstein elliptic curves punctured at the $\mathfrak{p}$-torsion points, $π_1^{\rm Mot}(E-E[\mathfrak{p}],v_0)$, and the geometry of the Bianchi hyperbolic threefolds $Γ_1(\mathfrak{p})\setminus\mathbb{H}^3$, where $Γ_1(\mathfrak{p})$ is a congruence subgroup of ${\rm GL}_2({\rm End}(E))$. The first instance of such a connection was found by A.Goncharov (arXiv:math/0510310). In particular, we study the Hodge realization of the image of the ab…
Building on work by Dan-Cohen--Wewers, Dan-Cohen [DC], and Brown, we push the computational boundary of our explicit motivic version of Kim's method in the case of the thrice punctured line over an open subscheme of Spec ZZ. To do so, we develop a refined version of the algorithm of [DC] tailored specifically to this case. We also commit ourselves fully to working with the polylogarithmic quotient. This allows us to restrict our calculus with motivic iterated integrals to the so-called depth-one part of the mixed Tate Galois group studied extensively by Goncharov. An application was given in p…
We describe a graded extension of the usual Hecke algebra: it acts in a graded fashion on the cohomology of an arithmetic group $Γ$. Under favorable conditions, the cohomology is freely generated in a single degree over this graded Hecke algebra. From this construction we extract an action of certain $p$-adic Galois cohomology groups on $H^*(Γ, \mathbb{Q}_p)$, and formulate the central conjecture: the motivic $\mathbb{Q}$-lattice inside these Galois cohomology groups preserves $H^*(Γ,\mathbb{Q})$.
This is a report on associators which is based on my talk at the Mathematische Arbeitstagung in Bonn, June 2011. I first recall Drinfeld's definition of associators and explain my (and its related) results in arXiv:math/0702128 and arXiv:0808.0319. Then I explain recent developments on the four pro-unipotent algebraic groups related to associators; the motivic Galois group, the Grothendieck-Teichmuller group, the double shuffle group and the Kashiwara-Vergne group.
Let p be an odd prime and let L/k be a Galois extension of number fields whose Galois group is isomorphic to the dihedral group of order 2p. Let S be a finite set of primes of L which is stable under the action of Gal(L/k). The Lichtenbaum conjecture on special values of the Dedekind zeta function at negative integers, together with Brauer formalism for Artin's L-functions, gives a (conjectural) formula relating orders of motivic cohomology groups of rings of S-integers and higher regulators of S-units of the subextensions of L/k. In analogy with the classical case of special values at 0, we g…
In the study of the arithmetic structure of elliptic modular groups which are the fundamental groups of compactified modular curves, these truncated group algebras and their direct sums are considered to construct elliptic modular motives. Our main result is a new theory of Hecke operators on these motives which gives a congruence relation to the Galois action, and their motivic decomposition. Using our Hecke theory, we show that elliptic modular motives are the direct sums of pure motives over certain number fields. This fact implies a kind of algebraicity on iterated Shimura integrals, i.e.,…
In 1997 Richard Pink has clarified the concept of Hodge structures over function fields in positive characteristic, which today are called Hodge-Pink structures. They form a neutral Tannakian category over the underlying function field. He has defined Hodge realization functors from the uniformizable abelian $t$-modules and $t$-motives of Greg Anderson to Hodge-Pink structures. This allows one to associate with each uniformizable $t$-motive a Hodge-Pink group, analogous to the Mumford-Tate group of a smooth projective variety over the complex numbers. It further enabled Pink to prove the analo…
