In this article we compute new theta relations which define the moduli space of abelian surfaces with real multiplication by square root three. We give the locus of square root three abelian surfaces in terms of the canonical coordinates on Mumford's moduli space of abelian surfaces with theta structure. The method that we use to compute the real multiplication theta relations is of purely algebraic nature. It differs from Runge's method and recent work by Gruenewald. We expect that our method generalizes to higher discriminants.
The main step in numerical evaluation of classical Sl2 (Z) modular forms and elliptic functions is to compute the sum of the first N nonzero terms in the sparse q-series belonging to the Dedekind eta function or the Jacobi theta constants. We construct short addition sequences to perform this task using N + o(N) multiplications. Our constructions rely on the representability of specific quadratic progressions of integers as sums of smaller numbers of the same kind. For example, we show that every generalised pentagonal number c 5 can be written as c = 2a + b where a, b are smaller generalised …
We study quotients of principally polarized abelian varieties with real multiplication by Galois-stable finite subgroups and describe when these quotients are principally polarizable. We use this characterization to provide an algorithm to compute explicit cyclic isogenies from kernel for abelian varieties with real multiplication over finite fields. Our algorithm is polynomial in the size of the finite field as well as the degree of the isogeny and is based on Mumford's theory of theta functions and theta embeddings. Recently, the algorithm has been successfully applied to obtain new results …
Fix an integer $d>0$. In 2008, David and Weston showed that, on average, an elliptic curve over $\mathbf{Q}$ picks up a nontrivial $p$-torsion point defined over a finite extension $K$ of the $p$-adics of degree at most $d$ for only finitely many primes $p$. This paper proves an analogous averaging result for principally polarized abelian surfaces over $\mathbf{Q}$ with real multiplication by $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{5})$ and a level-$\sqrt{5}$ structure. Furthermore, we indicate how the result on abelian surfaces with real multiplication by $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{5})$ relates to the deformation theory of…
It is proved that each lattice with complex multiplication by $f\sqrt{-D}$ corresponds to a pseudo-lattice with real multiplication by $f'\sqrt{D}$, where $f'$ is an integer defined by $f$.
We study infinite families of quadratic and cubic twists of the elliptic curve $E = X_0(27)$. For the family of quadratic twists, we establish a lower bound for the $2$-adic valuation of the algebraic part of the value of the complex $L$-series at $s=1$, and, for the family of cubic twists, we establish a lower bound for the $3$-adic valuation of the algebraic part of the same $L$-value. We show that our lower bounds are precisely those predicted by the celebrated conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.
Using Hecke characters, we construct two infinite families of newforms with complex multiplication, one by $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ and the other by $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-2})$. The values of the $p$-th Fourier coefficients of all the forms in each family can be described by a single formula, which we provide explicitly. This allows us to establish a formula relating the $p$-th Fourier coefficients of forms of different weights, within each family. We then prove congruence relations between the $p$-th Fourier coefficients of these newforms at all odd weights and values coming from two of Zagier's s…
Well-known results of Lagrange and Jacobi prove that the every $m \in \mathbb N$ can be expressed as a sum of four integer squares, and the number $r(m)$ of such representations can be given by an explicit formula in $m$. In this paper, we prove that the only real quadratic number field for which the sum of four squares is universal is $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{5})$. We provide explicit formulas for $r(m)$ for $K= \mathbb Q (\sqrt{2})$ and $K= \mathbb Q(\sqrt{5})$. We then consider the theta series of the sum of four squares over any real quadratic number field, providing explicit upper and lower bound…
We show that the Eigenvariety attached to Hilbert modular forms over a totally real field $F$ is smooth at the points corresponding to certain classical weight one theta series and we give a precise criterion for etaleness over the weight space at those points. In the case where the theta series has real multiplication, we construct a non-classical overconvergent generalised eigenform and compute its Fourier coefficients in terms of $p$-adic logarithms of algebraic numbers. Our approach uses deformations and pseudo-deformations of Galois representations.
It is proved that the Hilbert class field of a real quadratic field ${\Bbb Q}(\sqrt{D})$ modulo a power $m$ of the conductor $f$ is generated by the Fourier coefficients of the Hecke eigenform for a congruence subgroup of level $fD$.
Let $p$ be an unramified prime in a totally real field $L$ such that $h^+(L)=1$. Our main result shows that Hilbert modular newforms of parallel weight two for $Γ_0(p)$ can be constructed naturally, via classical theta series, from modules of isogenies of superspecial abelian varieties with real multiplication on a Hilbert moduli space. This can be viewed as a geometric reinterpretation of the Eichler Basis Problem for Hilbert modular forms.
We outline a method to compute rational models for the Hilbert modular surfaces Y_{-}(D), which are coarse moduli spaces for principally polarized abelian surfaces with real multiplication by the ring of integers in Q(sqrt{D}), via moduli spaces of elliptic K3 surfaces with a Shioda-Inose structure. In particular, we compute equations for all thirty fundamental discriminants D with 1 < D < 100, and analyze rational points and curves on these Hilbert modular surfaces, producing examples of genus-2 curves over Q whose Jacobians have real multiplication over Q.
We use weakly holomorphic modular forms for the Hecke theta group to construct an explicit interpolation formula for Schwartz functions on the real line. The formula expresses the value of a function at any given point in terms of the values of the function and its Fourier transform on the set $\{0, \pm\sqrt{1}, \pm\sqrt{2}, \pm\sqrt{3},\dots\}$.
We present an algorithm that computes the product of two n-bit integers in O(n log n (4\sqrt 2)^{log^* n}) bit operations. Previously, the best known bound was O(n log n 6^{log^* n}). We also prove that for a fixed prime p, polynomials in F_p[X] of degree n may be multiplied in O(n log n 4^{log^* n}) bit operations; the previous best bound was O(n log n 8^{log^* n}).
Let xi be a real number which is neither rational nor quadratic over Q. Based on work of Davenport and Schmidt, Bugeaud and Laurent have shown that, for any real number theta, there exist a constant c>0 and infinitely many non-zero polynomials P in Z[T] of degree at most 2 such that |theta-P(xi)| < c |P|^{-gamma} where gamma=(1+sqrt{5})/2 denotes for the golden ratio and where the norm |P| of P stands for the largest absolute value of its coefficients. In the present paper, we show conversely that there exists a class of transcendental numbers xi for which the above estimates are optimal up to…
A generalized modular relation of the form $F(z, w, α)=F(z, iw,β)$, where $αβ=1$ and $i=\sqrt{-1}$, is obtained in the course of evaluating an integral involving the Riemann $Ξ$-function. It is a two-variable generalization of a transformation found on page $220$ of Ramanujan's Lost Notebook. This modular relation involves a surprising generalization of the Hurwitz zeta function $ζ(s, a)$, which we denote by $ζ_w(s, a)$. While $ζ_w(s, 1)$ is essentially a product of confluent hypergeometric function and the Riemann zeta function, $ζ_w(s, a)$ for $0<a<1$ is an interesting new special function. …
