Hochster established the existence of a commutative noetherian ring $\tilde C$ and a universal resolution $U$ of the form $0\to \tilde C^{e}\to \tilde C^{f}\to \tilde C^{g}\to 0$ such that for any commutative noetherian ring $S$ and any resolution $V$ equal to $0\to S^{e}\to S^{f}\to S^{g}\to 0$, there exists a unique ring homomorphism $\tilde C\to S$ with $V=U\otimes_{\tilde C} S$. In the present paper we assume that $f=e+g$ and we find the minimal resolution of ${\bf K}\otimes \tilde C$ by free $B$-modules, where $\bf K$ is a field of characteristic zero and $B$ is a polynomial ring over $\bf K$. Our techniques are geometric. We use the Bott algorithm and the Representation Theory of the General Linear Group. As a by-product of our work, we resolve a family of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules defined over a determinantal ring.
We derive basic properties of minimal extensions of local rings and their restrictions to subrings. Some applications are included to subrings of truncated polynomial rings.
In this article, we give the explicit minimal free resolution of the associated graded ring of certain affine monomial curves in affine 4-space based on the standard basis theory. As a result, we give the minimal graded free resolution and compute the Hilbert function of the tangent cone of these families.
We give a comparison between the Poincare series of two monomial rings: $R=A/I$ and $R_q=A/I_q$ where $I_q$ is a monomial ideal generated by the $q$'th power of monomial generators of $I$. We compute the Poincare series for a class of monomial rings with minimal Taylor resolution. The paper was produced during Pragmatic 2011.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. The ring $R\times R$ can be viewed as an extension of $R$ via the diagonal map $Δ: R \hookrightarrow R\times R$, given by $Δ(r) = (r, r)$ for all $r\in R$. It is shown that, for any $a, b\in R$, the extension $Δ(R)[(a,b)] \subset R\times R$ is a minimal ring extension if and only if the ideal $<a-b>$ is a maximal ideal of $R$. A complete classification of maximal subrings of $R(+)R$ is also given. The minimal ring extension of a von Neumann regular ring $R$ is either a von Neumann regular ring or the idealization $R(+)R/\mathfrak{m}$ where $\mathfra…
We prove the following result related to the inverse problem for universal deformation rings of group representations: Given a finite field k, denote by W(k) the ring of Witt vectors over k and by K the field of fractions of W(k). If a complete noetherian local ring R is a universal deformation ring of a representation of a finite group over k, then R \otimes_{W(k)} K is a finite étale K-algebra. As a consequence, we obtain explicit examples of characteristic zero complete noetherian local rings that can not be obtained as universal deformation rings of finite group representations. This contr…
Let R be a local Cohen-Macaulay ring with canonical module ω_R. We investigate the following question of Huneke: If the sequence of Betti numbers \{β_i^R(ω_R)\} has polynomial growth, must R be Gorenstein? This question is well-understood when R has minimal multiplicity. We investigate this question for a more general class of rings which we say are homologically of minimal multiplicity. We provide several characterizations of the rings in this class and establish a general ascent and descent result.
We study different types of localisations of a commutative noetherian ring. More precisely, we provide criteria to decide: (a) if a given flat ring epimorphism is a universal localisation in the sense of Cohn and Schofield; and (b) when such universal localisations are classical rings of fractions. In order to find such criteria, we use the theory of support and we analyse the specialisation closed subset associated to a flat ring epimorphism. In case the underlying ring is locally factorial or of Krull dimension one, we show that all flat ring epimorphisms are universal localisations. Moreove…
This paper has two related parts. The first generalizes Hochster's formula on resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings to a colorful version, applicable to any proper vertex-coloring of a simplicial complex. The second part examines a universal system of parameters for Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes, and more generally, face rings of simplicial posets. These parameters have good properties, including being fixed under symmetries, and detecting depth of the face ring. Moreover, when resolving the face ring over these parameters, the shape is predicted, conjecturally, by the colorful …
We show that if $(R, \m)$ is a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and $I$ is an ideal of minimal mixed multiplicity, then $\depth G(I) \geq d- 1$ implies that $\depth F(I) \geq d-1$. We use this to show that if $I$ is a contracted ideal in a two dimensional regular local ring then $\depth R[It]-1= \depth G(I) = \depth F(I)$. We also give an infinite class of ideals where $R[It]$ is Cohen-Macaulay but $F(I)$ is not.
We construct a minimal free resolution of the semigroup ring k[C] in terms of minimal resolutions of k[A] and k[B] when <C> is a numerical semigroup obtained by gluing two numerical semigroups <A> and <B>. Using our explicit construction, we compute the Betti numbers, graded Betti numbers, regularity and Hilbert series of k[C], and prove that the minimal free resolution of k[C] has a differential graded algebra structure provided the resolutions of k[A] and k[B] possess them. We discuss the consequences of our results in small embedding dimensions. Finally, we give an extension of our main res…
In a paper in 2008, Herzog, Hibi and Ohsugi introduced and studied the semigroup ring associated to the set of minimal vertex covers of an unmixed bipartite graph. In this paper we relate the dimension of this semigroup ring to the rank of the Boolean lattice associated to the graph.
Let R be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. In this paper we study the structure of Ulrich $R$-modules mainly in the case where R has minimal multiplicity. We explore generation of Ulrich R-modules, and clarify when the Ulrich R-modules are precisely the syzygies of maximal Cohen-Macaulay R-modules. We also investigate the structure of Ulrich R-modules as an exact category.
In this article, the ring of polynomials is studied in a systematic way through the theory of monoid rings. As a consequence, this study provides natural and canonical approaches in order to find easy and rigorous proofs and methods for many facts on polynomials and formal power series; some of them as sample are treated in this note. Besides the universal properties of the monoid rings and polynomial rings, a universal property for the formal power series rings is also established.
Let $B$ be a reduced local (Noetherian) ring with maximal ideal $M$. Suppose that $B$ contains the rationals, $B/M$ is uncountable and $|B| = |B/M|$. Let the minimal prime ideals of $B$ be partitioned into $m \geq 1$ subcollections $C_1, \ldots ,C_m$. We show that there is a reduced local ring $S \subseteq B$ with maximal ideal $S \cap M$ such that the completion of $S$ with respect to its maximal ideal is isomorphic to the completion of $B$ with respect to its maximal ideal and such that, if $P$ and $Q$ are prime ideals of $B$, then $P \cap S = Q \cap S$ if and only if $P$ and $Q$ are in $C_i…
Let $G$ be a subgroup of the automorphism group of a commutative ring with identity $T$. Let $R$ be a subring of $T$ such that $R$ is invariant under the action by $G$. We show $R^G\subset T^G$ is a minimal ring extension whenever $R\subset T$ is a minimal extension under various assumptions. Of the two types of minimal ring extensions, integral and integrally closed, both of these properties are passed from $R\subset T$ to $R^G\subset T^G$. An integrally closed minimal ring extension is a flat epimorphic extension as well as a normal pair. We show each of these properties also pass from $R\su…
We prove that any affine ring $R$ over a field $k$ has full cosupport, i.e., the cosupport of $R$ is equal to ${\rm Spec}\, R$. Using this fact, we give a complete description of all terms in a minimal pure-injective resolution of $R$, provided that $|k|=\aleph_1$ and ${\rm dim}\, R\geq 2$, or $|k|\geq \aleph_1$ and ${\rm dim}\, R=2$. As a corollary, we obtain a partial answer to a conjecture by Gruson.
We characterize which complete local (Noetherian) rings T containing the rationals are the completion of a countable excellent local ring S. We also discuss the possibilities for the map from the minimal prime ideals of T to the minimal prime ideals of S and we prove some characterization-style results.
Lower bounds on Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity are known for several types of commutative noetherian local rings, and rings with multiplicities which achieve these lower bounds are said to have minimal multiplicity. The first part of this paper gives characterizations of rings of minimal multiplicity in terms of the Ext-algebra of the ring; in particular, we show that minimal multiplicity can be detected via an Ext-algebra which is Gorenstein or Koszul AS-regular. The second part of this paper characterizes rings of minimal multiplicity via a numerical homological invariant introduced by J. Herzo…
Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring with residue field k and assume that it is not Gorenstein. In the minimal injective resolution of R, the injective envelope E of the residue field appears as a summand in every degree starting from the depth of R. The number of copies of E in degree i equals the k-vector space dimension of the cohomology module Ext^i(k,R). These dimensions, known as Bass numbers, form an infinite sequence of invariants of R about which little is known. We prove that it is non-decreasing and grows exponentially if R is Golod, a non-trivial fiber product, or Teter, or…
Let $ R $ be a $ d $-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay (CM) local ring of minimal multiplicity. Set $ S := R/({\bf f}) $, where $ {\bf f} := f_1,\ldots,f_c $ is an $ R $-regular sequence. Suppose $ M $ and $ N $ are maximal CM $ S $-modules. It is shown that if $ \mathrm{Ext}_S^i(M,N) = 0 $ for some $ (d+c+1) $ consecutive values of $ i \geqslant 2 $, then $ \mathrm{Ext}_S^i(M,N) = 0 $ for all $ i \geqslant 1 $. Moreover, if this holds true, then either $ \mathrm{projdim}_R(M) $ or $ \mathrm{injdim}_R(N) $ is finite. In addition, a counterpart of this result for Tor-modules is provided. Furthermore, …
In this short note we give an elementary description of the linear part of the minimal free resolution of a Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex $Δ$. Indeed, the differentials in the linear part are simply a compilation of restriction maps in the simplicial cohomology of induced subcomplexes of $Δ$. Along the way, we also show that if a monomial ideal has at least one generator of degree $2$, then the linear strand of its minimal free resolution can be written using only $\pm 1$ coefficients.
We characterize when the monomial maximal ideal of a simplicial affine semigroup ring has a monomial minimal reduction. When this is the case, we study the Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein properties of the associated graded ring and provide several bounds for the reduction number with respect to the monomial minimal reduction.
For commutative rings, we introduce the notion of a {\em universal grading}, which can be viewed as the "largest possible grading". While not every commutative ring (or order) has a universal grading, we prove that every {\em reduced order} has a universal grading, and this grading is by a {\em finite} group. Examples of graded orders are provided by group rings of finite abelian groups over rings of integers in number fields. We generalize known properties of nilpotents, idempotents, and roots of unity in such group rings to the case of graded orders; this has applications to cryptography. La…
It is shown that every dp-minimal integral domain $R$ is a local ring and for every non-maximal prime ideal $\mathfrak p $ of $R$, the localization $R_{\mathfrak p }$ is a valuation ring and $\mathfrak{p}R_{\mathfrak{p}}=\mathfrak{p}$. Furthermore, a dp-minimal integral domain is a valuation ring if and only if its residue field is infinite or its residue field is finite and its maximal ideal is principal.
The paper describes a duality phenomenon for cohomology theories with the character of Gorenstein rings. For a connective cohomology theory with the p-local integers in degree 0, and coefficient ring R_* Gorenstein of shift 0, this states that for X with R_*(X) torsion, we have R^*(X)=Σ^a Hom( R_*(X), Z/p^{\infty}). A corresponding statement for modules over a commutative Gorenstein ring spectrum is also proved. [Minor typographical and bibliographic changes to the last version.]
