A well-known result by Kemperman describes the structure of those pairs (A,B) of finite subsets of an abelian group satisfying |A+B|\le|A|+|B|-1. We establish a description which is, in a sense, dual to Kemperman's, and as an application sharpen several results due to Deshouillers, Hamidoune, Hennecart, and Plagne.
A classical result of Kemperman gives a complete recursive description of the structure of those subsets $A$ and $B$ of an abelian group that fail to satisfy the triangle inequality, i.e., $|A+B|<|A|+|B|$. In this paper, we achieve the complete description in the case when equality holds: $|A+B|=|A|+|B|$.
Let $Γ=(V,E)$ be a reflexive relation having a transitive group of automorphisms and let $v\in V.$ Let $F$ be a subset of $V$ with $F\cap Γ^-(v)=\{v\}$. (i) If $F$ is finite, then $| Γ(F)\setminus F|\ge |Γ(v)|-1.$ (ii) If $F$ is cofinite, then $| Γ(F)\setminus F|\ge |Γ^- (v)|-1.$ In particular, let $G$ be group, $B$ be a finite subset of $G$ and let $F$ be a finite or a cofinite subset of $G$ such that $F\cap B^{-1}=\{1\}$. Then $| (FB)\setminus F|\ge |B|-1.$ The last result (for $F$ finite), is famous Moser-Scherck-Kemperman-Wehn Theorem. Its extension to cofinite subsets seems new. We give a…
In the present work, we introduce the notion of a hyper-atom and prove their main structure theorem. We then apply the global isoperimetric methodology to give a new proof for Kemperman's structure Theory and a slight improvement.
We obtain critical pair theorems for subsets S and T of an abelian group such that |S+T| < |S|+|T|+1. We generalize some results of Chowla, Vosper, Kemperman and a more recent result due to Rodseth and one of the authors.
Let K \subset L be a field extension. Given K-subspaces A,B of L, we study the subspace spanned by the product set AB = {ab | a \in A, b \in B}. We obtain some lower bounds on the dimension of this subspace and on dim B^n in terms of dim A, dim B and n. This is achieved by establishing linear versions of constructions and results in additive number theory mainly due to Kemperman and Olson.
We introduce the notion of a hyper-atom and prove a basic property of this object. This new method allows to improve several results in the classical critical pair theory including its cornerstone: the Kemperman Structure Theorem.
We introduce the notion of a hyper-atom. One of the main results of this paper is the $\frac{2|G|}3$--Theorem: Let $S$ be a finite generating subset of an abelian group $G$ of order $\ge 2$. Let $T$ be a finite subset of $G$ such that $2\le |S|\le |T|$, $S+T$ is aperiodic, $0\in S\cap T$ and $$ \frac{2|G|+2}3\ge |S+T|= |S|+|T|-1.$$ Let $H$ be a hyper-atom of $S$. Then $S$ and $T$ are $H$--quasi-periodic. Moreover $ϕ(S)$ and $ϕ(T)$ are arithmetic progressions with the same difference, where $ϕ:G\mapsto G/H$ denotes the canonical morphism. This result implies easily the traditional critical pair…
Martin Kneser proved the following addition theorem for every abelian group $G$. If $A,B \subseteq G$ are finite and nonempty, then $|A+B| \ge |A+K| + |B+K| - |K|$ where $K = \{g \in G \mid g+A+B = A+B \}$. Here we give a short proof of this based on a simple intersection union argument.
Let G be a finite Abelian group and A be a subset G\times G of cardinality at least |G|^2/(log log |G|)^c, where c>0 is an absolute constant. We prove that A contains a triple {(k,m), (k+d,m), (k,m+d)}, where d does not equal 0. This theorem is a two-dimensional generalization of Szemeredi's theorem on arithmetic progressions.
A famous result of Freiman describes the structure of finite sets A of integers with small doubling property. If |A + A| <= K|A| then A is contained within a multidimensional arithmetic progression of dimension d(K) and size f(K)|A|. Here we prove an analogous statement valid for subsets of an arbitrary abelian group.
We prove a purity theorem for abelian schemes in arbitrary unramified mixed characteristic (0,p). The case p=2 is completely new and the case p>2 fixes several errors in the literature.
If A is an abelian variety over a number field K, and L is a (possibly infinite) extension of K generated by torsion points of A, then the quotient of A(L) by its torsion subgroup is a free abelian group.
A theorem of Chow concerns homomorphisms of two abelian varieties under a primary field extension base change. In this paper we generalize Chow's theorem to semi-abelian varieties. This contributes to different proofs of a well-known result that every algebraic torus splits over a finite separable field extension. We also obtain the best bound for the degrees of splitting fields of tori.
We prove a general form of the regularity theorem for uniformity norms, and deduce an inverse theorem for these norms which holds for a class of compact nilspaces including all compact abelian groups, and also nilmanifolds; in particular we thus obtain the first non-abelian versions of such theorems. We derive these results from a general structure theorem for cubic couplings, thereby unifying these results with the Host-Kra Ergodic Structure Theorem. A unification of this kind had been propounded as a conceptual prospect by Host and Kra. Our work also provides new results on nilspaces. In par…
We prove new results concerning the additive Galois module structure of certain wildly ramified finite non-abelian extensions of Q. In particular, when K/Q is a Galois extension with Galois group G isomorphic to A4, S4 or A5, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the ring of integers of K to be free over its associated order in the rational group algebra Q[G].
Let K be a number field and A/K be a polarized abelian variety with absolutely trivial endomorphism ring. We show that if the Neron model of A/K has at least one fiber with potential toric dimension one, then for almost all rational primes ell, the Galois group of the splitting field of the ell-torsion of A is GSp_{2g}(Z/ell).
In this short note we present an elementary proof of the Ax-Lindemann-Weierstrass theorem for abelian and semi-abelian varieties. The proof uses ideas of Pila, Ullmo, Yafaev, Zannier and is based on basic properties of sets definable in o-minimal structures. It does not use the Pila-Wilkie counting theorem.
We show that up to potential isogeny, there are only finitely many abelian varieties of dimension $d$ defined over a number field $K$, such that for any finite place $v$ outside a fixed finite set $S$ of places of $K$ containing the archimedean places, it has either good reduction at $v$, or totally bad reduction at $v$ and good reduction over a quadratic extension of the completion of $K$ at $v$.
Given a number field $K$ one associates to it the set $Λ_K$ of Dedekind zeta-functions of finite abelian extensions of $K$. In this short note we present a proof of the following Theorem: for any number field $K$ the set $Λ_K$ determines the isomorphism class of $K$. This means that if for any number field $K'$ the two sets $Λ_K$ and $Λ_{K'}$ coincide, then $K \simeq K'$. As a consequence of this fact we deduce an alternative approach towards the proof of Neukirch-Uchida Theorem for the case of non-normal extensions of number fields.
In this note, we apply Moriwaki's arithmetic height functions to obtain an analogue of Silverman's Specialization Theorem for families of Abelian varieties over $K$, where $K$ is any field finitely generated over ${\Q}$.
Let L/k be a finite Galois extension of number fields with Galois group G. For every odd prime p satisfying certain mild technical hypotheses, we use values of Artin L-functions to construct an element in the centre of the group ring Z_(p)[G] that annihilates the p-part of the class group of L.
We prove a Freiman-type theorem for locally compact abelian groups. If A is a subset of a locally compact abelian group with Haar measure m and m(nA) < n^dm(A) for all n>d log d then we describe A in a way which is tight up to logarithmic factors in d.
We interpret the "explicit formula" in the sense of analytic number theory for the zeta function of an ordinary abelian variety of dimension g over a finite field as a transversal index theorem on a (2g+1)-dimensional Riemannian foliated space. This generalizes a work of Deninger for elliptic curves.
Let A be an abelian variety over a number field k. We show that weak approximation holds in the Weil-Châtelet group of A/k but that it may fail when one restricts to the n-torsion subgroup. This failure is however relatively mild; we show that weak approximation holds outside a finite set of primes which is generically empty. This proves a conjecture of Lang and Tate that can be seen as an analog of the Grunwald-Wang theorem in class field theory. The methods apply, for the most part, to arbitrary finite Galois modules and so may be of interest in their own right.
We compare flat cohomology with crystalline syntomic complexes in two cases: 1) $p$-divisible groups over a separated $\mathbb F_p$-scheme with local finite $p$-bases, 2) semi-abelian schemes over a separated irreducible smooth curve.
In order to compute with $l$--adic sheaves or crystals on a line over $\mathbb{F} _q$ a low-technology alternative to the traditional computation with the Hecke operators on the automorphic side could be helpful. A program which has evolved over the years in our discussions with M. Kontsevich centers around the concept that, in the geometric case, there must exist certain multiplication laws on the Galois--representation side that could be thought of as precursors of the automorphic lifts: non-abelian Abel's theorems, and their restrictions to diagonal, Clausen identities. To a varying extent,…
We prove the local mixing theorem for geodesic flows on abelian covers finite volume hyperbolic surfaces with cusps, which is a continuation of the work of Oh-Pan. We also describe applications to counting problems and the prime geodesic theorem.
A theorem of Grothendieck asserts that over a perfect field k of cohomological dimension one, all non-abelian H^2-cohomology sets of algebraic groups are trivial. The purpose of this paper is to establish a formally real generalization of this theorem. The generalization -- to the context of perfect fields of virtual cohomological dimension one -- takes the form of a local-global principle for the H^2-sets with respect to the orderings of the field. This principle asserts in particular that an element in H^2 is neutral precisely when it is neutral in the real closure with respect to every orde…
Let $G$ be a $σ$-finite abelian group, i.e. $G=\bigcup_{n\geq 1} G_n$ where $(G_n)_{n\geq 1}$ is a non decreasing sequence of finite subgroups. For any $A\subset G$, let $\underline{\mathrm{d}}(A):=\liminf_{n\to\infty}\frac{|A\cap G_n|}{|G_n|}$ be its lower asymptotic density. We show that for any subsets $A$ and $B$ of $G$, whenever $\underline{\mathrm{d}}(A+B)<\underline{\mathrm{d}}(A)+\underline{\mathrm{d}}(B)$, the sumset $A+B$ must be periodic, that is, a union of translates of a subgroup $H\leq G$ of finite index. This is exactly analogous to Kneser's theorem regarding the density of inf…
In 1988 P. Erdös asked if the prime divisors of $x^n -1$ for all $n=1,2, >...$ determine the given integer $x$; the problem was affirmatively answered by Corrales-Rodorigáñez and R. Schoof in 1997 together with its elliptic version. Analogously, K. Yamanoi proved in 2004 that the support of the pull-backed divisor $f^{*}D$ of an ample divisor on an abelian variety $A$ by an algebraically non-degenerate entire holomorphic curve $f: \C \to A$ essentially determines the pair $(A, D)$. By making use of a recent theorem of Noguchi-Winkelmann-Yamanoi in Nevanlinna theory, we here deal with this prob…
We consider higher-dimensional analogues of the classical Brauer-Siegel theorem focusing on the case of abelian varieties over global function fields. We prove such an analogue in the case of constant families of elliptic curves and abelian varieties.
The purpose of this paper is to explore Nevanlinna theory of the entire curve $\exh_A f:=(\exp_Af,f):\C \to A \times \Lie(A)$ associated with an entire curve $f: \C \to \Lie(A)$, where $\exp_A:\Lie(A)\to A$ is an exponential map of a semi-abelian variety $A$. Firstly we give a Nevanlinna theoretic proof to the {\em analytic Ax-Schanuel Theorem} for semi-abelian varieties, which was proved by J. Ax 1972 in the case of formal power series (Ax-Schanuel Theorem). We assume some non-degeneracy condition for $f$ such that the elements of the vector-valued function $f(z)-f(0) \in \Lie(A)\iso \C^n$ ar…
In this paper we generalize the Deuring theorem on a reduction of elliptic curve with complex multiplication. More precisely, for an Abelian variety $A$, arising after reduction of an Abelian variety with complex multiplication by a CM field $K$ over a number field at a pace of good reduction. We establish a connection between a decomposition of the first truncated Barsotti-Tate group scheme $A[p]$ and a decomposition of $p\cO_{K}$ into prime ideals. In particular, we produce these explicit relationships for Abelian varieties of dimensions $1, 2$ and 3.
Abelian covers of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds are ubiquitous. We prove the local mixing theorem of the frame flow for abelian covers of closed hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. We obtain a classification theorem for measures invariant under the horospherical subgroup. We also describe applications to the prime geodesic theorem as well as to other counting and equidistribution problems. Our results are proved for any abelian cover of a homogeneous space $Γ_0\backslash G$ where $G$ is a rank one simple Lie group and $Γ_0<G$ is a convex cocompact Zariski dense subgroup.
Using the Shioda-Tate theorem and an adaptation of Silverman's specialization theorem, we reduce the specialization of Mordell-Weil ranks for abelian varieties over fields finitely generated over infinite finitely generated fields $k$ to the the specialization theorem for Néron-Severi ranks recently proved by Ambrosi in positive characteristic. More precisely, we prove that after a blow-up of the base surface $S$, for all vertical curves $S_x$ of a fibration $S \to U \subseteq \mathbf{P}^1_k$ with $x$ from the complement of a sparse subset of $|U|$, the Mordell-Weil rank of an abelian scheme o…
This paper is a continuation to \cite{Gazaki2017}. For every integer $n\geq 1$, we consider the generalized Galois symbol $K(k;G_1,G_2)/n\xrightarrow{s_n} H^2(k,G_1[n]\otimes G_2[n])$, where $k$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, $G_1,G_2$ are semi-abelian varieties over $k$ and $K(k;G_1,G_2)$ is the Somekawa K-group attached to $G_1, G_2$. Under some mild assumptions, we describe the exact annihilator of the image of $s_n$ under the Tate duality perfect pairing, $H^2(k,G_1[n]\otimes G_2[n])\times H^0(k,Hom(G_1[n]\otimes G_2[n],μ_n))\rightarrow\mathbb{Z}/n$. An important special case is …
The aim of this paper is to prove a theorem of Ax-Lindemann type for complex semi-abelian varieties as an application of a big Picard theorem proved by the author in 1981, and then apply it to prove a theorem of classical Manin-Mumford Conjecture for semi-abelian varieties, which was proved by M. Raynaud 1983, M. Hindry 1988, ....., and Pila-Zannier 2008 by a different method from others, which is most relevant to our's. The present result might be a first instance of a direct connection between the value distribution theory of holomorphic maps and the arithmetic (Diophantine) theory over alge…
