Let G be a finite Abelian group and A be a subset G\times G of cardinality at least |G|^2/(log log |G|)^c, where c>0 is an absolute constant. We prove that A contains a triple {(k,m), (k+d,m), (k,m+d)}, where d does not equal 0. This theorem is a two-dimensional generalization of Szemeredi's theorem on arithmetic progressions.
Szemeredi's regularity lemma is an important tool in graph theory which has applications throughout combinatorics. In this paper we prove an analogue of Szemeredi's regularity lemma in the context of abelian groups and use it to derive some results in additive number theory. One is a structure theorm for sets which are almost sum-free. If A is a subset of [N] which contains just o(N^2) triples (x,y,z) such that x + y = z then A may be written as the union of B and C, where B is sum-free and |C| = o(N). Another answers a question of Bergelson, Host and Kra. If alpha, epsilon > 0, if N > N_0(alp…
We prove a Szemerédi-Trotter type theorem and a sum-product estimate in the setting of finite quasifields. These estimates generalize results of the fourth author, of Garaev, and of Vu. We generalize results of Gyarmati and Sárközy on the solvability of the equations $a + b = cd$ and $ab + 1 = cd$ over a finite field. Other analogous results that are known to hold in finite fields are generalized to finite quasifields.
Green and Tao famously proved in 2005 that any subset of the primes of fixed positive density contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Green had previously shown that in fact any subset of the primes of relative density tending to zero sufficiently slowly contains a 3-term term progression. This was followed by work of Helfgott and de Roton, and Naslund, who improved the bounds on the relative density in the case of 3-term progressions. The aim of this note is to present an analogous result for longer progressions by combining a quantified version of the relative Szemerédi theorem gi…
We obtain a polynomial upper bound in the finite-field version of the multidimensional polynomial Szemerédi theorem for distinct-degree polynomials. That is, if $P_1, ..., P_t$ are nonconstant integer polynomials of distinct degrees and $v_1, ..., v_t$ are nonzero vectors in $\mathbb{F}_p^D$, we show that each subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^D$ lacking a nontrivial configuration of the form $$ x, x + v_1 P_1(y), ..., x + v_t P_t(y)$$ has at most $O(p^{D-c})$ elements. In doing so, we apply the notion of Gowers norms along a vector adapted from ergodic theory, which extends the classical concept of Gow…
Let $A$ be a subset of a finite field $F := \Z/q\Z$ for some prime $q$. If $|F|^δ< |A| < |F|^{1-δ}$ for some $δ> 0$, then we prove the estimate $|A+A| + |A.A| \geq c(δ) |A|^{1+\eps}$ for some $\eps = \eps(δ) > 0$. This is a finite field analogue of a result of Erdos and Szemeredi. We then use this estimate to prove a Szemeredi-Trotter type theorem in finite fields, and obtain a new estimate for the Erdos distance problem in finite fields, as well as the three-dimensional Kakeya problem in finite fields.
We prove a quantitative version of the Polynomial Szemeredi Theorem for difference sets. This result is achieved by first establishing a higher dimensional analogue of a theorem of Sarkozy (the simplest non-trivial case of the Polynomial Szemeredi Theorem asserting that the difference set of any subset of the integers of positive upper density necessarily contains a perfect square) and then applying a simple lifting argument.
An old conjecture of Graham stated that if $n$ is a prime and $S$ is a sequence of $n$ terms from the cyclic group $C_n$ such that all (nontrivial) zero-sum subsequences have the same length, then $S$ must contain at most two distinct terms. In 1976, Erdős and Szemeredi gave a proof of the conjecture for sufficiently large primes $n$. However, the proof was complicated enough that the details for small primes were never worked out. Both in the paper of Erdős and Szemeredi and in a later survey by Erdős and Graham, the complexity of the proof was lamented. Recently, a new proof, valid even for …
In this paper we consider certain local-global principles for Mordell-Weil type groups over number fields like S-units, abelian varieties and algebraic K-theory groups
We survey Colmez's theory and conjecture about the Faltings height and a product formula for the periods of abelian varieties with complex multiplication, along with the function field analog developed by the authors. In this analog, abelian varieties are replaced by Drinfeld modules and $A$-motives. We also explain the necessary background on abelian varieties, Drinfeld modules and $A$-motives, including their cohomology theories and comparison isomorphisms and their theory of complex multiplication.
Lattice rounding in Euclidean space can be viewed as finding the nearest point in the orbit of an action by a discrete group, relative to the norm inherited from the ambient space. Using this point of view, we initiate the study of non-abelian analogs of lattice rounding involving matrix groups. In one direction, we give an algorithm for solving a normed word problem when the inputs are random products over a basis set, and give theoretical justification for its success. In another direction, we prove a general inapproximability result which essentially rules out strong approximation algorithm…
A famous result of Freiman describes the structure of finite sets A of integers with small doubling property. If |A + A| <= K|A| then A is contained within a multidimensional arithmetic progression of dimension d(K) and size f(K)|A|. Here we prove an analogous statement valid for subsets of an arbitrary abelian group.
We study the special value $u=1$ of Artin-Ihara $L$-functions associated to characters of the automorphism group of abelian covers of multigraphs. In particular, we show an annihilation statement analogous to a classical conjecture of Brumer on annihilation of class groups for abelian extensions of number fields and we also calculate the index of an ideal analogous to the classical Stickelberger ideal in algebraic number theory. Along the way, we make some observations about the number of spanning trees in abelian multigraph coverings that may be of independent interest.
We formulate an analogue of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for Abelian schemes with everywhere good reduction over higher dimensional bases over finite fields of characteristic $p$. We prove the prime-to-$p$ part conditionally on the finiteness of the $p$-primary part of the Tate-Shafarevich group or the equality of the analytic and the algebraic rank. If the base is a product of curves, Abelian varieties and K3 surfaces, we prove the prime-to-$p$ part of the conjecture for constant or isoconstant Abelian schemes, in particular the prime-to-$p$ part for (1) relative elliptic curve…
We establish lower bounds for the $p$-divisibility of the quantity $\#\operatorname{Hom}(G,GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q))$, the number of homomorphisms from $G$ to a general linear group, where $G$ is an Abelian $p$-group. This is in analogy to the result of Krattenthaler and Müller \cite{MR3383810} on homomorphisms to symmetric groups.
It is well-known for an elliptic curve with complex multiplication that the existence of a $\mathbb{Q}$-rational model is equivalent to its field of moduli being equal to $\mathbb{Q}$, or its endomorphism ring being the ring of integers of 9 possible fields ($\ast$). Murabayashi and Umegaki proved analogous results for abelian surfaces. For three dimensional CM abelian varieties with rational fields of moduli, Chun narrowed down to a list of 37 possible CM fields. In this paper, we show that his list is exact. By constructing certain Hecke characters that satisfy a theorem of Shimura, we prove…
Pure t-motives were introduced by G. Anderson as higher dimensional generalizations of Drinfeld modules, and as the appropriate analogs of abelian varieties in the arithmetic of function fields. In order to construct moduli spaces for pure t-motives the second author has previously introduced the concept of abelian τ-sheaf. In this article we clarify the relation between pure t-motives and abelian τ-sheaves. We obtain an equivalence of the respective quasi-isogeny categories. Furthermore, we develop the elementary theory of both structures regarding morphisms, isogenies, Tate modules, and loca…
We study analogues of Tate's conjecture on homomorphisms for abelian varieties when the ground field is finitely generated over an algebraic closure of a finite field. Our results cover the case of abelian varieties without nontrivial endomorphisms.
In this note, we apply Moriwaki's arithmetic height functions to obtain an analogue of Silverman's Specialization Theorem for families of Abelian varieties over $K$, where $K$ is any field finitely generated over ${\Q}$.
We consider higher-dimensional analogues of the classical Brauer-Siegel theorem focusing on the case of abelian varieties over global function fields. We prove such an analogue in the case of constant families of elliptic curves and abelian varieties.
Let F be a global field and let S denote a nonempty finite set of primes of F containing the set S' of archimedean primes of F. In this paper we study the Neron S-class group C_{A,F,S} of an abelian variety A defined over F. In the well-known analogy that exists between the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for A over F and Dirichlet's analytic class number formula for the field F (in the number field case), the finite group C_{A,F,S'} (not the Tate-Shafarevich group of A) is a natural analog of the ideal class group of F.
Let $D(G)$ be the Davenport constant of a finite Abelian group $G$. For a positive integer $m$ (the case $m = 1$, is the classical one) let ${\mathsf E}_m(G)$ (or $η_m(G)$, respectively) be the least positive integer $t$ such that every sequence of length $t$ in $G$ contains $m$ disjoint zero-sum sequences, each of length $|G|$ (or of length $\le exp(G)$ respectively). In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is an~Abelian group, then ${\mathsf E}_m(G)=D(G)-1+m|G|$, which generalizes Gao's relation. We investigate also the non-Abelian case. Moreover, we examine the asymptotic behavior of the sequen…
In this paper, we study a (p-adic) geometric analogue for abelian varieties over a function field of characteristic p of the cyclotomic Iwasawa theory and the non-commutative Iwasawa theory for abelian varieties over a number field initiated by Mazur and Coates respectively. We will prove some analogue of the principal results obtained in the case over a number field and we study new phenomena which did not happen in the case of number field case. We propose also a conjecture which might be considered as a counterpart of the principal conjecture in the case over a number field. \par This is a …
The main result of the paper is a reciprocity law which proves that compatible systems of semisimple, abelian mod $p$ representations (of arbitrary dimension) of absolute Galois groups of number fields, arise from Hecke characters. In the last section of the paper analogs for Galois groups of function fields of these results are explored, and a question is raised whose answer will require developments in transcendence theory in characteristic $p$.
