A rainbow subgraph of an edge-coloured graph has all edges of distinct colours. A random d-regular graph with d even, and having edges coloured randomly with d/2 of each of n colours, has a rainbow Hamilton cycle with probability tending to 1 as n tends to infinity, provided d is at least 8.
In this paper we study the randomly edge colored graph that is obtained by adding randomly colored random edges to an arbitrary randomly edge colored dense graph. In particular we ask how many colors and how many random edges are needed so that the resultant graph contains a fixed number of edge disjoint rainbow Hamilton cycles. We also ask when in the resultant graph every pair of vertices is connected by a rainbow path.
A subgraph $H$ of an edge-coloured graph is called rainbow if all of the edges of $H$ have different colours. In 1989, Andersen conjectured that every proper edge-colouring of $K_{n}$ admits a rainbow path of length $n-2$. We show that almost all optimal edge-colourings of $K_{n}$ admit both (i) a rainbow Hamilton path and (ii) a rainbow cycle using all of the colours. This result demonstrates that Andersen's Conjecture holds for almost all optimal edge-colourings of $K_{n}$ and answers a recent question of Ferber, Jain, and Sudakov. Our result also has applications to the existence of transve…
The $k$-rainbow domination problem is studied for regular graphs. We prove that the $k$-rainbow domination number $γ_{rk}(G)$ of a $d$-regular graph for $d\leq k\leq 2d$ is bounded below by $\displaystyle{\left\lceil kn/2d\right\rceil}$, where $n$ is the order of a graph. We determine necessary conditions for regular graphs to attain this bound and find several examples. As an application, we determine exact $k$-rainbow domination numbers for all cubic Cayley graphs over abelian groups.
Let $HP_{n,m,k}$ be drawn uniformly from all $k$-uniform, $k$-partite hypergraphs where each part of the partition is a disjoint copy of $[n]$. We let $HP^{(\k)}_{n,m,k}$ be an edge colored version, where we color each edge randomly from one of $\k$ colors. We show that if $\k=n$ and $m=Kn\log n$ where $K$ is sufficiently large then w.h.p. there is a rainbow colored perfect matching. I.e. a perfect matching in which every edge has a different color. We also show that if $n$ is even and $m=Kn\log n$ where $K$ is sufficiently large then w.h.p. there is a rainbow colored Hamilton cycle in $G^{(n)…
A famous theorem of Dirac states that any graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $n/2$ has a Hamilton cycle. Such graphs are called Dirac graphs. Strengthening this result, we show the existence of rainbow Hamilton cycles in $μn$-bounded colourings of Dirac graphs for sufficiently small $μ>0$.
Given a graph on $n$ vertices and an assignment of colours to the edges, a rainbow Hamilton cycle is a cycle of length $n$ visiting each vertex once and with pairwise different colours on the edges. Similarly (for even $n$) a rainbow perfect matching is a collection of $n/2$ independent edges with pairwise different colours. In this note we show that if we randomly colour the edges of a random geometric graph with sufficiently many colours, then a.a.s. the graph contains a rainbow perfect matching (rainbow Hamilton cycle) if and only if the minimum degree is at least $1$ (respectively, at leas…
An edge-colored graph $G$ is rainbow connected if any two vertices are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connection number of a connected graph $G$, denoted $rc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected. We prove if $G$ is a connected strongly $r$-regular graph and $r\geq 600$, then $rc(G)\leq3$. Specially, there is a constant $c$ such that $rc(G)\leq c$ for any connected strongly regular graph $G$.
An edge colored graph $G$ is rainbow edge connected if any two vertices are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connection of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $rc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected. In this work we study the rainbow connection of the random $r$-regular graph $G=G(n,r)$ of order $n$, where $r\ge 4$ is a constant. We prove that with probability tending to one as $n$ goes to infinity the rainbow connection of $G$ satisfies $rc(G)=O(\log n)$, which is best possible up to a hidden constant.
Let $H_{n,p,r}^{(k)}$ denote a randomly colored random hypergraph, constructed on the vertex set $[n]$ by taking each $k$-tuple independently with probability $p$, and then independently coloring it with a random color from the set $[r]$. Let $H$ be a $k$-uniform hypergraph of order $n$. An $\ell$-Hamilton cycle is a spanning subhypergraph $C$ of $H$ with $n/(k-\ell)$ edges and such that for some cyclic ordering of the vertices each edge of $C$ consists of $k$ consecutive vertices and every pair of adjacent edges in $C$ intersects in precisely $\ell$ vertices. In this note we study the existen…
We prove two results regarding cycles in properly edge-colored graphs. First, we make a small improvement to the recent breakthrough work of Alon, Pokrovskiy and Sudakov who showed that every properly edge-colored complete graph $G$ on $n$ vertices has a rainbow cycle on at least $n - O(n^{3/4})$ vertices, by showing that $G$ has a rainbow cycle on at least $n - O(\log n \sqrt{n})$ vertices. Second, by modifying the argument of Hatami and Shor which gives a lower bound for the length of a partial transversal in a Latin Square, we prove that every properly colored complete graph has a Hamilton …
One of the most famous results in the theory of random graphs establishes that the threshold for Hamiltonicity in the Erdos-Renyi random graph G_{n,p} is around p ~ (log n + log log n) / n. Much research has been done to extend this to increasingly challenging random structures. In particular, a recent result by Frieze determined the asymptotic threshold for a loose Hamilton cycle in the random 3-uniform hypergraph by connecting 3-uniform hypergraphs to edge-colored graphs. In this work, we consider that setting of edge-colored graphs, and prove a result which achieves the best possible first …
In this paper, we develop a new rainbow Hamilton framework, which is of independent interest, settling the problem proposed by Gupta, Hamann, Müyesser, Parczyk, and Sgueglia when $k=3$, and draw the general conclusion for any $k\geq3$ as follows. A $k$-graph system $\textbf{H}=\{H_i\}_{i\in[n]}$ is a family of not necessarily distinct $k$-graphs on the same $n$-vertex set $V$, moreover, a $k$-graph $H$ on $V$ is rainbow if $E(H)\subseteq \bigcup_{i\in[n]}E(H_i)$ and $|E(H)\cap E(H_i)|\leq1$ for $i\in[n]$. We show that given $γ> 0$, sufficiently large $n$ and an $n$-vertex $k$-graph system $\te…
Given an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $d n$ for some fixed $d > 0$, the distribution $G \cup \mathbb{G}(n,p)$ over the supergraphs of $G$ is referred to as a (random) {\sl perturbation} of $G$. We consider the distribution of edge-coloured graphs arising from assigning each edge of the random perturbation $G \cup \mathbb{G}(n,p)$ a colour, chosen independently and uniformly at random from a set of colours of size $r := r(n)$. We prove that such edge-coloured graph distributions a.a.s. admit rainbow Hamilton cycles whenever the edge-density of the random perturbation satisf…
Given a graph $G$ and a subgraph $H$ of $G$, let $rb(G,H)$ be the minimum number $r$ for which any edge-coloring of $G$ with $r$ colors has a rainbow subgraph $H$. The number $rb(G,H)$ is called the rainbow number of $H$ with respect to $G$. Denote $mK_2$ a matching of size $m$ and $B_{n,k}$ a $k$-regular bipartite graph with bipartition $(X,Y)$ such that $|X|=|Y|=n$ and $k\leq n$. In this paper we give an upper and lower bound for $rb(B_{n,k},mK_2)$, and show that for given $k$ and $m$, if $n$ is large enough, $rb(B_{n,k},mK_2)$ can reach the lower bound. We also determine the rainbow number …
Let $H$ be an edge colored hypergraph. We say that $H$ contains a \emph{rainbow} copy of a hypergraph $S$ if it contains an isomorphic copy of $S$ with all edges of distinct colors. We consider the following setting. A randomly edge colored random hypergraph $H\sim \mathcal H_c^k(n,p)$ is obtained by adding each $k$-subset of $[n]$ with probability $p$, and assigning it a color from $[c]$ uniformly, independently at random. As a first result we show that a typical $H\sim \mathcal H^2_c(n,p)$ (that is, a random edge colored graph) contains a rainbow Hamilton cycle, provided that $c=(1+o(1))n$ a…
We consider the following random model for edge-colored graphs. A graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is fixed, and a random subgraph $G_p$ is chosen by letting each edge of $G$ remain independently with probability $p$. Then, each edge of $G_p$ is colored uniformly at random from the set $[n-1]$. A result of Frieze and McKay (Random Structures and Algorithms, 1994) implies that when $G = K_n$ and $p = (2 + ε) \frac{\log n}{n}$ for some constant $ε> 0$, then $G_p$ almost surely contains a rainbow spanning tree. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is a $d$-regular $Ω(n)$-edge-connected graph, then when $p…
Given a graph $G$ and a family $\mathcal{G} = \{G_1,\ldots,G_n\}$ of subgraphs of $G$, a transversal of $\mathcal{G}$ is a pair $(T,ϕ)$ such that $T \subseteq E(G)$ and $ϕ: T \rightarrow [n]$ is a bijection satisfying $e \in G_{ϕ(e)}$ for each $e \in T$. We call a transversal Hamiltonian if $T$ corresponds to the edge set of a Hamiltonian cycle in $G$. We show that, under certain conditions on the maximum degree of $G$ and the minimum degrees of the $G_i \in \mathcal{G}$, for every $\mathcal{G}$ which contains a Hamiltonian transversal, the number of Hamiltonian transversals contained in $\mat…
Let $G_1,...,G_n$ be graphs on the same vertex set of size $n$, each graph with minimum degree $δ(G_i)\ge n/2$. A recent conjecture of Aharoni asserts that there exists a rainbow Hamiltonian cycle i.e. a cycle with edge set $\{e_1,...,e_n\}$ such that $e_i\in E(G_i)$ for $1\leq i \leq n$. This can be viewed as a rainbow version of the well-known Dirac theorem. In this paper, we prove this conjecture asymptotically by showing that for every $\varepsilon>0$, there exists an integer $N>0$, such that when $n>N$ for any graphs $G_1,...,G_n$ on the same vertex set of size $n$ with $δ(G_i)\ge (\frac{…
A path in an edge-colored graph $G$, where adjacent edges may be colored the same, is called a rainbow path if no two edges of the path are colored the same. For a $κ$-connected graph $G$ and an integer $k$ with $1\leq k\leq κ$, the rainbow $k$-connectivity $rc_k(G)$ of $G$ is defined as the minimum integer $j$ for which there exists a $j$-edge-coloring of $G$ such that any two distinct vertices of $G$ are connected by $k$ internally disjoint rainbow paths. Denote by $K_{r,r}$ an $r$-regular complete bipartite graph. Chartrand et al. in "G. Chartrand, G.L. Johns, K.A. McKeon, P. Zhang, The rai…
Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and let $k$ be a fixed positive integer. We denote by $\mathcal G_{\text{$k$-out}}(G)$ the probability space consisting of subgraphs of $G$ where each vertex $v\in V(G)$ randomly picks $k$ neighbors from $G$, independently from all other vertices. We show that if $δ(G)=ω(\log n)$ and $k\geq 2$, then the following holds for every $p=ω(\log n/δ(G))$. Let $H$ be a random graph obtained by keeping each $e\in E(G)$ with probability $p$ independently at random and then coloring its edges independently and uniformly at random with elements from the set $[kn]$. Then,…
Let $Γ_n$ be the complete undirected Cayley graph of the odd cyclic group $Z_n$. Connected graphs whose vertices are rainbow tetrahedra in $Γ_n$ are studied, with any two such vertices adjacent if and only if they share (as tetrahedra) precisely two distinct triangles. This yields graphs $G$ of largest degree 6, asymptotic diameter $|V(G)|^{1/3}$ and almost all vertices with degree: {\bf(a)} 6 in $G$; {\bf(b)} 4 in exactly six connected subgraphs of the $(3,6,3,6)$-semi-regular tessellation; and {\bf(c)} 3 in exactly four connected subgraphs of the $\{6,3\}$-regular hexagonal tessellation. A subgraph of an edge-coloured complete graph is called rainbow if all its edges have different colours. In 1980 Hahn conjectured that every properly edge-coloured complete graph $K_n$ has a rainbow Hamiltonian path. Although this conjecture turned out to be false, it was widely believed that such a colouring always contains a rainbow cycle of length almost $n$. In this paper, improving on several earlier results, we confirm this by proving that every properly edge-coloured $K_n$ has a rainbow cycle of length $n-O(n^{3/4})$. One of the main ingredients of our proof, which is of independent int…
An edge colored graph $G$ is rainbow edge connected if any two vertices are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connectivity of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $rc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected. In this work we study the rainbow connectivity of binomial random graphs at the connectivity threshold $p=\frac{\log n+\om}{n}$ where $\om=\om(n)\to\infty$ and ${\om}=o(\log{n})$ and of random $r$-regular graphs where $r \geq 3$ is a fixed integer. Specifically, we prove that the rainbow connectivity $rc(G)$ …
We prove that every properly edge-colored $n$-vertex graph with average degree at least $100(\log n)^2$ contains a rainbow cycle, improving upon $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ bound due to Tomon. We also prove that every properly colored $n$-vertex graph with at least $10^5 k^2 n^{1+1/k}$ edges contains a rainbow $2k$-cycle, which improves the previous bound $2^{ck^2}n^{1+1/k}$ obtained by Janzer. Our method using homomorphism inequalities and a lopsided regularization lemma also provides a simple way to prove the Erdős--Simonovits supersaturation theorem for even cycles, which may be of independent inte…
A $1-$factorization of a complete graph on $2n$ vertices is said to be $G-$regular if it posseses an automorphism group $G$ acting sharply transitively on the vertex-set. The problem of determining which groups can realize such a situation dates back to a result by Hartman and Rosa (1985) on cyclic groups and, when $n$ is even, the problem is still open. An attempt to obtain a fairly precise description of groups and $1-$factorizations satisfying this symmetry constrain can be done by imposing further conditions. It was recently proved, see Rinaldi (2021) and Mazzuoccolo et al. (2019), that a …
A subgraph of an edge-coloured graph is called rainbow if all its edges have distinct colours. The study of rainbow subgraphs goes back more than two hundred years to the work of Euler on Latin squares and has been the focus of extensive research ever since. Euler posed a problem equivalent to finding properly $n$-edge-coloured complete bipartite graphs $K_{n,n}$ which can be decomposed into rainbow perfect matchings. While there are proper edge-colourings of $K_{n,n}$ without even a single rainbow perfect matching, the theme of this paper is to show that with some very weak additional constra…
Let $G$ be a nontrivial connected graph with an edge-coloring $c: E(G)\rightarrow \{1,2,...,q\},$ $q \in \mathbb{N}$, where adjacent edges may be colored the same. A tree $T$ in $G$ is a $rainbow tree$ if no two edges of $T$ receive the same color. For a vertex subset $S\subseteq V(G)$, a tree that connects $S$ in $G$ is called an $S$-tree. The minimum number of colors that are needed in an edge-coloring of $G$ such that there is a rainbow $S$-tree for each $k$-subset $S$ of $V(G)$ is called $k$-rainbow index, denoted by $rx_k(G)$. In this paper, we first determine the graphs whose 3-rainbow i…
Let $G$ be a nontrivial edge-colored connected graph. An edge-cut $R$ of $G$ is called a rainbow cut if no two edges of it are colored the same. An edge-colored graph $G$ is rainbow disconnected if for every two vertices $u$ and $v$, there exists a $u-v$ rainbow cut. For a connected graph $G$, the rainbow disconnection number of $G$, denoted by $rd(G)$, is defined as the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow disconnected. In this paper, we first solve a conjecture that determines the maximum size of a connected graph $G$ of order $n$ with $rd(G) = k$ for given …
We show how to adjust a very nice coupling argument due to McDiarmid in order to prove/reprove in a novel way results concerning Hamilton cycles in various models of random graph and hypergraphs. In particular, we firstly show that for $k\geq 3$, if $pn^{k-1}/\log n$ tends to infinity, then a random $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices, with edge probability $p$, with high probability (w.h.p.) contains a loose Hamilton cycle, provided that $(k-1)|n$. This generalizes results of Frieze, Dudek and Frieze, and reproves a result of Dudek, Frieze, Loh and Speiss. Secondly, we show that there exis…
A path in an edge-colored graph $G$, where adjacent edges may be colored the same, is a rainbow path if every two edges of it receive distinct colors. The rainbow connection number of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $rc(G)$, is the minimum number of colors that are needed to color the edges of $G$ such that there exists a rainbow path connecting every two vertices of $G$. Similarly, a tree in $G$ is a rainbow~tree if no two edges of it receive the same color. The minimum number of colors that are needed in an edge-coloring of $G$ such that there is a rainbow tree connecting $S$ for each $k$-…
We prove several results on approximate decompositions of edge-coloured quasirandom graphs into rainbow spanning structures. More precisely, we say that an edge-colouring of a graph is locally $\ell$-bounded if no vertex is incident to more than $\ell$ edges of any given colour, and that it is (globally) $g$-bounded if no colour appears more than $g$ times in the colouring. Note that every proper colouring of an $n$-vertex graph is locally $1$-bounded, and (globally) $n/2$-bounded. Our results imply the following: (i) The existence of approximate decompositions of edge-coloured $K_n$ into rain…
Given a $c$-edge-coloured multigraph, a proper Hamiltonian path is a path that contains all the vertices of the multigraph such that no two adjacent edges have the same colour. In this work we establish sufficient conditions for an edge-coloured multigraph to guarantee the existence of a proper Hamiltonian path, involving various parameters as the number of edges, the number of colours, the rainbow degree and the connectivity.
Let $G$ be a nontrivial edge-colored connected graph. An edge-cut $R$ of $G$ is called a {\it rainbow edge-cut} if no two edges of $R$ are colored with the same color. For two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$, if an edge-cut separates them, then the edge-cut is called a {\it $u$-$v$-edge-cut}. An edge-colored graph $G$ is called \emph{strong rainbow disconnected} if for every two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$, there exists a both rainbow and minimum $u$-$v$-edge-cut ({\it rainbow minimum $u$-$v$-edge-cut} for short) in $G$, separating them, and this edge-coloring is called a {\it st…
A $c$-edge-colored multigraph has each edge colored with one of the $c$ available colors and no two parallel edges have the same color. A proper Hamiltonian cycle is a cycle containing all the vertices of the multigraph such that no two adjacent edges have the same color. In this work we establish sufficient conditions for a multigraph to have a proper Hamiltonian cycle, depending on several parameters such as the number of edges and the rainbow degree.
Consider a directed analogue of the random graph process on $n$ vertices, where the $n(n-1)$ edges are ordered uniformly at random and revealed one at a time. It is known that w.h.p.\@ the first digraph in this process with both in-degree and out-degree $\geq q$ has a $[q]$-edge-coloring with a Hamilton cycle in each color. We show that this coloring can be constructed online, where each edge must be irrevocably colored as soon as it appears. In a similar fashion, for the \emph{undirected} random graph process, we present an online $[n]$-edge-coloring algorithm which yields w.h.p.\@ $q$ disjoi…
