We study real Campedelli surfaces up to real deformations and exhibit a number of such surfaces which are equivariantly diffeomorphic but not real deformation equivalent.
We continue our investigation of the connected components of the moduli space of surfaces of general type containing the Burniat surfaces, correcting a mistake in part II. We define the family of extended Burniat surfaces with K_S^2 = 4, resp. 3, and prove that they are a deformation of the family of nodal Burniat surfaces with K_S^2 = 4, resp. 3. We show that the extended Burniat surfaces together with the nodal Burniat surfaces with K_S^2=4 form a connected component of the moduli space. We prove that the extended Burniat surfaces together with the nodal Burniat surfaces with K_S^2=3 form an…
We prove the constancy of the Łojasiewicz exponent in non-degenerate $μ$-constant deformations of surface singularities. This is a positive answer to a question posed by B. Teissier.
We give a bound on the number of isolated, essential singularities of determinantal quartic surfaces in 3-space. We also provide examples of different configurations of real singularities on quartic surfaces with a definite Hermitian determinantal representation, and conjecture an extension of a theorem by Degtyarev and Itenberg.
The article is a slightly extended version of the talk, with the same title, which I gave at the Kinosaki Symposium on Algebraic Geometry in October 2011, and dealing with the classification of complex projective surfaces of general type with vanishing geometric genus, and especially with the moduli spaces of Burniat surfaces.
We show that the Hilbert scheme which parameterises bitangent lines to a general quartic surface is a counterexample to the infinitesimal Torelli claim and is a smooth regular surface with no rational curves and very ample canonical divisor.
The known (explicit) examples of Riemann surfaces not definable over their field of moduli are not real whose field of moduli is a subfield of the reals. In this paper we provide explicit examples of real Riemann surfaces which cannot be defined over the field of moduli.
We prove the standard conjectures for complex projective varieties that are deformations of the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface. The proof involves Verbitsky's theory of hyperholomorphic sheaves and a study of the cohomology algebra of Hilbert schemes of K3 surfaces.
We consider the deformation spaces of some singular product-quotient surfaces $X=(C_1 \times C_2)/G$, where the curves $C_i$ have genus 3 and the group $G$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_4$. As a by-product, we give a new construction of Todorov surfaces with $p_g=1$, $q=0$ and $2\le K^2\le 8$ by using $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothings.
We study real elliptic surfaces and trigonal curves (over a base of an arbitrary genus) and their equivariant deformations. We calculate the real Tate-Shafarevich group and reduce the deformation classification to the combinatorics of a real version of Grothendieck's {\it dessins d'enfants}. As a consequence, we obtain an explicit description of the deformation classes of $M$- and $(M-1)$- (i.e., maximal and submaximal in the sense of the Smith inequality) curves and surfaces.
The purpose of this paper is to prove dimension formulas for $T^1$ and $T^2$ for rational surface singularities. These modules play an important role in the deformation theory of isolated singularities in analytic and algebraic geometry. The first may be identified as the Zariski tangent space of the versal deformation of the singularity; i.e. it is the space of infinitesimal deformations. The second contains the obstruction space -- in all known cases it is the whole obstruction space for rational surface singularities.
A smooth family $φ:\mathcal V\to S$ of surfaces will be called {\em completable} if there is a logarithmic deformation $(\bar {\mathcal V},{\mathcal D})$ over $S$ so that ${\mathcal V}=\bar{\mathcal V}\backslash {\mathcal D}$. Two smooth surfaces $V$ and $V'$ are said to be deformations of each other if there is a completable flat family ${\mathcal V}\to S$ of smooth surfaces over a connected base so that $V$ and $V'$ are fibers over suitable points $s,s'\in S$. This relation generates an equivalence relation called {\em deformation equivalence}. In this paper we give a complete combinatorial …
We investigate the correspondence between three theories of deformations of rational surface singularities: de Jong and van Straten's picture deformations, Kollár's P-resolutions, and Pinkham's smoothings of negative weights. We provide an explicit method for obtaining, from a given deformation in one theory, deformations in other theories that parameterize the same irreducible components of the deformation space of the singularity. We employ the semi-stable minimal model program significantly for this purpose. We prove Kollár conjecture for various sandwiched surface singularities as an appli…
The versal deformation of Stanley-Reisner schemes associated to equivelar triangulations of the torus is studied. The deformation space is defined by binomials and there is a toric smoothing component which I describe in terms of cones and lattices. Connections to moduli of abelian surfaces are considered. The case of the Möbius torus is especially nice and leads to a projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold with Euler number 6.
We determine the base space of the Kuranishi family of some complete intersection in the product of an abelian variety and a projective space. As a consequence we obtain new examples of obstructed irregular surfaces with ample canonical bundle and maximal Albanese dimension.
For a complete, smooth toric variety Y, we describe the graded vector space T_Y^1. Furthermore, we show that smooth toric surfaces are unobstructed and that a smooth toric surface is rigid if and only if it is Fano. For a given toric surface we then construct homogeneous deformations by means of Minkowski decompositions of polyhedral subdivisions, compute their images under the Kodaira-Spencer map, and show that they span T_Y^1.
Working in characteristic two, I classify nonsmooth Enriques surfaces with normal crossing singularities. Using Kato's theory of logarithmic structures, I show that such surfaces are smoothable and lift to characteristic zero, provided they are d-semistable.
We study K3 surfaces over a number field $k$ which are double covers of extremal rational elliptic surfaces. We provide a list of all elliptic fibrations on certain K3 surfaces together with the degree of a field extension over which each genus one fibration is defined and admits a section. We show that the latter depends, in general, on the action of the cover involution on the fibers of the genus 1 fibration.
This paper studies the obstructions to deforming a map from a complex variety to another variety which is an immersion of codimension one. We extend the classical notion of semiregularity of subvarieties to maps between varieties, and show that it largely extends the applicability. Then we apply the main result to several situations. First, we give deformations of non-reduced curves on surfaces in a geometrically controlled way. Also, we give a simple but effective criterion for the vanishing of the obstructions to equisingular deformations of nodal curves on surfaces. Finally, we construct no…
We study the symplectic analogue of log Calabi-Yau surfaces and show that the symplectic deformation classes of these surfaces are completely determined by the homological information.
We illustrate the use of tropical methods by generalizing a formula due to Abramovich and Bertram, extended later by Vakil. Namely, we exhibit relations between enumerative invariants of the Hirzebruch surfaces $Σ_n$ and $Σ_{n+2}$, obtained by deforming the first surface to the latter. Our strategy involves a tropical counterpart of deformations of Hirzebruch surfaces, and tropical enumerative geometry on a tropical surface in three-space.

If $X$ is a rational surface without nonzero holomorphic vector field and $f$ is an automorphism of $X$, we study in several examples the Zariski tangent space of the local deformation space of the pair $(X, f)$.
We will prove that the number of deformation equivalence classes of surfaces homotopy equivalent to a smooth, closed 4-manifold is finite, if the first Betti number is equal to one, and the second Betti number is equal to zero.
We show that a minimal surface of general type has a canonical symplectic structure (unique up to symplectomorphism) which is invariant for smooth deformation. We show that the symplectomorphism type is also invariant for deformations which allow certain normal singularities, provided one remains in the same smoothing component. We use this technique to show that the Manetti surfaces yield examples of surfaces of general type which are not deformation equivalent but are canonically symplectomorphic.
Friedman and Morgan made the "speculation" that deformation equivalence and diffeomorphism should coincide for algebraic surfaces. Counterexamples, for the hitherto open case of surfaces of general type, have been given in the last years by Manetti, by Kharlamov-Kulikov and in my cited article. For the latter much simpler examples, it was shown that there are surfaces $S$ which are not deformation equivalent to their complex conjugate. However, by Seiberg-Witten theory, any (oriented) diffeomorphism of minimal surfaces carries the canonical class K to + K or to - K, and deformation equivalence…
Let M be a compact complex surface which admits a Kaehler metric whose scalar curvature has integral zero; and suppose the fundamental group of M does not contain an Abelian subgroup of finite index. Then if M is blown up at sufficiently many points, the resulting surface M' admits scalar-flat Kaehler metrics.
We present the extended Kuranishi space for Kodaira surface as a non-trivial example to Kontsevich and Barannikov's extended deformation theory. We provide a non-trivial example of Hertling-Manin's weak Frobenius manifold. In addition, we find that Kodaira surface is its own mirror image. Our computation is done in the context of compact nilmanifolds. The calculation of extended deformation and the weak Frobenius structure is based on Merkulov's perturbation method. The approach to relating symplectic structure and complex structure is inspired by Gualtieri's work on generalized complex struct…
This paper uses reconstruction algebras to construct simultaneous resolution of determinantal surfaces. The main new difference to the classical case is that, in addition to the quiver of the reconstruction algebra, certain noncommutative relations, namely those of the canonical algebra of Ringel, are required. All the relations of the reconstruction algebra except the canonical relation are then deformed, and these deformed relations together with variation of the GIT quotient achieve the simultaneous resolution.
By analytic deformations of complex structures, we mean perturbations of the Dolbeault operator. By algebraic deformations of complex structures, we mean deformations of holomorphic glueing data. For complex manifolds there is, infinitesimally, a correspondence between these two types deformations. In this article we argue that an analogous correspondence holds between the analytic and algebraic deformations of a super Riemann surface.
