Friedman and Morgan made the "speculation" that deformation equivalence and diffeomorphism should coincide for algebraic surfaces. Counterexamples, for the hitherto open case of surfaces of general type, have been given in the last years by Manetti, by Kharlamov-Kulikov and in my cited article. For the latter much simpler examples, it was shown that there are surfaces $S$ which are not deformation equivalent to their complex conjugate. However, by Seiberg-Witten theory, any (oriented) diffeomorphism of minimal surfaces carries the canonical class K to + K or to - K, and deformation equivalence implies the existence of a diffeomorphism carrying K to +K. In fact, as observed by a referee, the bulk of the proof was to show that our surfaces have no selfhomeomorphism carrying K to - K (the same for the K-K surfaces). In this note we show that Manetti's surfaces provide indeed a counterexample to the reinforced conjecture, since they are symplectomorphic. Our result is that a surface of general type has a canonical symplectic structure (up to symplectomorphism) which is invariant for deformation and for certain degenerations to normal surfaces. Since moreover no simply connected counterexamples to the conjecture are known, we provide explicit families of 1-connected surfaces, which are obtained by glueing together two fixed manifolds with boundary, are not deformation equivalent, but are homeomorphic under a homeomorphism carrying K to +K. We also give as application the existence of symplectically equivalent, but not deformation equivalent cuspidal plane curves.
We study the symplectic analogue of log Calabi-Yau surfaces and show that the symplectic deformation classes of these surfaces are completely determined by the homological information.
We prove that under certain conditions, the quantum cohomology of a positively monotone compact symplectic manifold is a deformation of the symplectic cohomology of the complement of a simple crossings symplectic divisor. We also prove rigidity results for the skeleton of the divisor complement.
We review recent results and ongoing investigations of the symplectic and Poisson geometry of derived moduli spaces, and describe applications to deformation quantization of such spaces.

Deformation quantization algebroids over a complex symplectic manifold X are locally given by rings of WKB operators, that is, microdifferential operators with an extra central parameter τ. In this paper, we will show that such algebroids are classified by H^2(X;k^*), where k^* is a subgroup of the group of invertible formal Laurent series in τ^-1.
On a complex symplectic manifold, we construct the stack of quantization-deformation modules, that is, (twisted) modules of microdifferential operators with an extra central parameter, a substitute to the lack of homogeneity. We also quantize involutive submanifolds of contact manifolds.
We show that a minimal surface of general type has a canonical symplectic structure (unique up to symplectomorphism) which is invariant for smooth deformation. We show that the symplectomorphism type is also invariant for deformations which allow certain normal singularities, provided one remains in the same smoothing component. We use this technique to show that the Manetti surfaces yield examples of surfaces of general type which are not deformation equivalent but are canonically symplectomorphic.
We recover a 4-dimensional wreath product X as a transversal slice to a nilpotent orbit in sp_6. By using deformations of Springer resolutions, we construct a symplectic deformation of symplectic resolutions of X.
We prove that two projective symplectic resolutions of $\cit^{2n}/G$ are connected by Mukai flops in codimension 2 for a finite sub-group $G < \Sp(2n)$. It is also shown that two projective symplectic resolutions of $\cit^4/G$ are deformation equivalent.
We prove unobstructed deformations for compact Kaehlerian even-dimensional Poisson manifolds whose Poisson tensor degenerates along a divisor with mild singularities. Examples include Hilbert schemes of del Pezzo surfaces.
The notion of a holomorphically symplectic manifold can be generalized to the singular one. This paper studies the birational contraction maps between symplectic varieties, and then describes the deformation of a symplectic variety which has a symplectic resolution. Some examples are also included.
We shall prove that any small deformation of a Q-factorial projective symplectic variety with terminal singularities is locally rigid; in other words, it preserves the singularity. In particular, many singular symplectic moduli of semi-stable sheaves on K3 have no smoothings via deformations. As an application of the result, we also prove that the smootheness is preserved under a flop in our symplectic case. We conjecture that a projective symplectic variety has a smoothing by a flat deformation if and only if it has a crepant (symplectic) resolution. This conjecture would be true if the minim…
We introduce the $2$-nodal spherical deformation of certain singular fibers of genus $2$ fibrations, and use such deformations to construct various examples of simply connected minimal symplectic $4$-manifolds with small topology. More specifically, we construct new exotic minimal symplectic $4$-manifolds homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to ${\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#6({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$, ${\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#7({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$, and $3{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}\#k({\overline{\mathbb{CP}}^{2}})$ for $k=16, 17, 18, 19$ using combinations of such deformations, symplectic blowups, and (…
We show that the space of first-order deformations of an orthogonal (resp. symplectic) sheaf over a smooth projective scheme is the first hypercohomology space of a complex which is naturally constructed out of the orthogonal (resp. symplectic) sheaf. We also provide an obstruction theory of these objects whose target is the second hypercohomology space of this complex.
We shall prove that the Poisson deformation functor of an affine (singular) symplectic variety is unobstructed. As a corollary, we prove the following result. Theorem: For an affine symplectic variety $X$ with a good $C^*$-action (where its natural Poisson structure is positively weighted), the following are equivalent (1) $X$ has a crepant projective resolution. (2) $X$ has a smoothing by a Poisson deformation.
For a complex projective manifold Gromov-Witten invariants can be constructed either algebraically or symplectically. Using the versions of Gromov-Witten theory by Behrend and Fantechi on the algebraic side and by the author on the symplectic side, we prove that both points of view give the same results. A similar statement has been obtained independently by Li and Tian using their definitions of algebraic and symplectic Gromov-Witten invariants (alg-geom/9712035).
We establish a connection between smooth symplectic resolutions and symplectic deformations of a (possibly singular) affine Poisson variety. In particular, let V be a finite-dimensional complex symplectic vector space and G\subset Sp(V) a finite subgroup. Our main result says that the so-called Calogero-Moser deformation of the orbifold V/G is, in an appropriate sense, a versal Poisson deformation. That enables us to determine the algebra structure on the rational cohomology H^*(X) of any smooth symplectic resolution X \to V/G (multiplicative McKay correspondence). We prove further that if G i…
We generalize Voisin's theorem on deformations of pairs of a symplectic manifold and a Lagrangian submanifold to the case of Lagrangian normal crossing subvarieties. Partial results are obtained for arbitrary Lagrangian subvarieties. We apply our results to the study of singular fibers of Lagrangian fibrations.
Motivated by the study of hyperkahler structures in moduli problems and hyperkahler implosion, we initiate the study of non-reductive hyperkahler and algebraic symplectic quotients with an eye towards those naturally tied to projective geometry, like cotangent bundles of blow-ups of linear arrangements of projective space. In the absence of a Kempf-Ness theorem for non-reductive quotients, we focus on constructing algebraic symplectic analogues of additive quotients of affine spaces, and obtain hyperkahler structures on large open subsets of these analogues by comparison with reductive analogu…
In the present paper we prove that finite symplectic groups of automorphisms of manifolds of k3^[n] type can be obtained by deforming natural morphisms arising from K3 surfaces if and only if they satisfy a certain numerical condition.
We give an equivalence of triangulated categories between the derived category of finitely generated representations of symplectic reflection algebras associated with wreath products (with parameter t=0) and the derived category of coherent sheaves on a crepant resolution of the spectrum of the centre of these algebras.
We prove the standard conjectures for complex projective varieties that are deformations of the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface. The proof involves Verbitsky's theory of hyperholomorphic sheaves and a study of the cohomology algebra of Hilbert schemes of K3 surfaces.
Unfortunately, some proofs in the first version of this paper were incorrect. In this revised version, some minor gaps are fixed, one serious mistake found. The main theorem is now claimed only under a restrictive technical assumption. This invalidates the application to quotient singularities by the Weyl group of type $G_2$. Everything else still stands (in particular, the claim that every symplectic resolution is semismall).
We study moduli spaces of meromorphic connections (with arbitrary order poles) over Riemann surfaces together with the corresponding spaces of monodromy data (involving Stokes matrices). Natural symplectic structures are found and described both explicitly and from an infinite dimensional viewpoint (generalising the Atiyah-Bott approach). This enables us to give an intrinsic symplectic description of the isomonodromic deformation equations of Jimbo, Miwa and Ueno, thereby putting the existing results for the six Painleve equations and Schlesinger's equations into a uniform framework.
This is a local version of math.AG/0506534. We shall deal with the deformation of a convex symplectic variety $X$ instead of a projective one. The usual deformation does not work well in the convex case. Instead, we regard $X$ as a Poisson scheme and study its Poisson deformation. One of the application is the following: Let $Y$ be an affine symplectic variety, and assume that $Y$ has two $Q$-factorial crepant terminalizations $X$ and $X'$. If $X$ is non-singular, then $X'$ is non-singular, too. Moreover, when $Y$ has a good $C^*$-action, $X$ and $X'$ have the same kind of singularities.
In this paper we provide generalisations of Pfaffian formulas for the degeneracy loci classes in the algebraic cobordism of symplectic/odd orthogonal Grassmann bundles.
In this article we explore compactifications of cluster varieties of finite type in complex dimension two. Cluster varieties can be viewed as the spec of a ring generated by theta functions and a compactification of such varieties can be given by a grading on that ring, which can be described by positive polytopes [17]. In the examples we exploit, the cluster variety can be interpreted as the complement of certain divisors in del Pezzo surfaces. In the symplectic viewpoint, they can be described via almost toric fibrations over $\R^2$ (after completion). Once identifying them as almost toric m…
We investigate the Poisson geometry of the Marsden-Weinstein reductions of the moment map associated to the cotangent bundle of the space of representations of a quiver. We show that the stratification by representation type equals the stratification by symplectic leaves. The deformed symplectic quotient singularities - spectra of centres of symplectic reflection algebras associated to a wreath product - are shown to be isomorphic to reductions of a certain quiver. This establishes a method to calculate when these deformations are smooth. Furthermore, the isomorphism identifies symplectic leav…
We study the deformation theory of rational curves on primitive symplectic varieties and show that if the rational curves cover a divisor, then, as in the smooth case, they deform along their Hodge locus in the universal locally trivial deformation. As applications, we extend Markman's deformation invariance of prime exceptional divisors along their Hodge locus to this singular framework and provide existence results for uniruled ample divisors on primitive symplectic varieties which are locally trivial deformations of any moduli space of semistable objects on a projective $K3$ or fibers of th…
Let X be a Hyperkähler variety deformation equivalent to the Hilbert square on a K3 surface and let f be an involution preserving the symplectic form. We prove that the fixed locus of f consists of 28 isolated points and 1 K3 surface, moreover the anti-invariant lattice of the induced involution on H^2(X,Z) is isomorphic to E_8(-2). Finally we prove that any couple consisting of one such variety and a symplectic involution on it can be deformed into a couple consisting of the Hilbert square of a K3 surface and the involution induced by a Nikulin involution on the K3 surface.
We give a systematic presentation of the stability theory in the non-algebraic Kaehlerian geometry. We introduce the concept of "energy complete Hamiltonian action". To an energy complete Hamiltonian action of a reductive group G on a complex manifold one can associate a G-equivariant maximal weight function and prove a Hilbert criterion for semistability. In other words, for such actions, the symplectic semistability and analytic semistability conditions are equivalent.
We describe the minimal number of critical points and the minimal number $s$ of singular fibres for a non isotrivial fibration of a surface $S$ over a curve $B$ of genus $1$, constructing a fibration with $s=1$ and irreducible singular fibre with $4$ nodes. Then we consider the associated factorizations in the mapping class group and in the symplectic group. We describe explicitly which products of transvections on homologically independent and disjoint circles are a commutator in the Symplectic group $Sp (2g, \mathbb{Z})$.
Let $X$ be a compact complex manifold with trivial canonical bundle and satisfying the $\partial\bar{\partial}$-Lemma. We show that the Kuranishi space of $X$ is a smooth universal deformation and that small deformations enjoy the same properties as $X$. If, in addition, $X$ admits a complex symplectic form, then the local Torelli theorem holds and we obtain some information about the period map. We clarify the structure of such manifolds a little by showing that the Albanese map is a surjective submersion.
This paper is concerned with non-symplectic involutions of irreducible symplectic manifolds of $K3^{[n]}$-type. We will give a criterion for deformation equivalence and use this to give a lattice-theoretic description of all deformation types. While moduli spaces of $K3^{[n]}$-type manifolds with non-symplectic involutions are not necessarily Hausdorff, we will construct quasi-projective moduli spaces for a certain well-behaved class of such pairs.
The known counterexamples to the global Torelli theorem for higher-dimensional hyperkahler manifolds are provided by birational manifolds. We address the question whether two birational hyperkahler manifolds (i.e. irreducible symplectic) manifolds always define non-separated points in the moduli space of marked manifolds. An affirmative answer is given for the cases of Mukai's elementary transformations and birational correspondences which are isomorphic in codimension two. The techniques are applied to show that the moduli spaces of rank two sheaves on a K3 surface are deformation equivalent …
We lay down an elementary yet fundamental lemma concerning a finite algebraicness property of a smooth map from an Azumaya/matrix manifold with a fundamental module to a smooth manifold. This gives us a starting point to build a synthetic (synonymously, $C^{\infty}$-algebraic) symplectic geometry and calibrated geometry that are both tailored to and guided by D-brane phenomena in string theory and along the line of our previous works D(11.1) (arXiv:1406.0929 [math.DG]) and D(11.2) (arXiv:1412.0771 [hep-th]).
We prove that any ample class on a primitive symplectic variety that is locally trivial deformation of O'Grady's singular 6 dimensional example is proportional to the first Chern class of a uniruled divisor. This result answers a question of Lehn, Mongardi and Pacienza, extending their result for primitive symplectic varieties of this deformation type.
We study modules over the algebroid stack $\W[\stx]$ of deformation quantization on a complex symplectic manifold $\stx$ and recall some results: construction of an algebra for $\star$-products, existence of (twisted) simple modules along smooth Lagrangian submanifolds, perversity of the complex of solutions for regular holonomic $\W[\stx]$-modules, finiteness and duality for the composition of ``good'' kernels. As a corollary, we get that the derived category of good $\W[\stx]$-modules with compact support is a Calabi-Yau category. We also give a conjectural Riemann-Roch type formula in this …
We prove that every $0$-shifted symplectic structure on a derived Artin $n$-stack admits a curved $A_{\infty}$ deformation quantisation. The classical method of quantising smooth varieties via quantisations of affine space does not apply in this setting, so we develop a new approach. We construct a map from DQ algebroid quantisations of unshifted symplectic structures on a derived Artin $n$-stack to power series in de Rham cohomology, depending only on a choice of Drinfeld associator. This gives an equivalence between even power series and certain involutive quantisations, which yield anti-inv…
We study how Gromov-Witten invariants of projective 3-folds transform under a standard flop and a small extremal transition in the algebro-geometric setting from the recent development of algebraic relative Gromov-Witten theory and its applications. This gives an algebro-geometric account of Witten's wall-crossing formula for correlation functions of the descendant nonlinear sigma model in adjacent geometric phases of a gauge linear sigma model and of the symplectic approach in an earlier work of An-Min Li and Yongbin Ruan on the same problem. A terse account from the stringy and the symplecti…
We classify filtered quantizations of conical symplectic singularities and use this to show that all filtered quantizations of symplectic quotient singularities are spherical Symplectic reflection algebras of Etingof and Ginzburg. We further apply our classification and a classification of filtered Poisson deformations obtained by Namikawa to establish a version of the Orbit method for semisimple Lie algebras. Namely, we produce a natural map from the set of adjoint orbits in a semisimple Lie algebra to the set of primitive ideals in the universal enveloping algebra. We show that the map is in…
Let $X$ be a hyperkähler variety, and assume that $X$ admits a non-symplectic automorphism $σ$ of order $k>{1\over 2}\dim X$. Bloch's conjecture predicts that the quotient $X/<σ>$ should have trivial Chow group of $0$-cycles. We verify this for Fano varieties of lines on certain cubic fourfolds having an order $3$ non-symplectic automorphism.
In 1995, Dan Guan constructed examples of non-Kahler, simply-connected holomorphically symplectic manifolds. An alternative construction, using the Hilbert scheme of Kodaira-Thurston surface, was given by F. Bogomolov. We investigate topology and deformation theory of Bogomolov-Guan manifolds and show that it is similar to that of hyperkahler manifolds. We prove the local Torelli theorem, showing that holomorphically symplectic deformations of BG-manifolds are unobstructed, and the corresponding period map is locally a diffeomorphism. Using the local Torelli theorem, we prove the Fujiki formul…
Let $X$ be a hyperkähler variety, and assume $X$ has a non-symplectic automorphism $σ$ of order $>{1\over 2}\dim X$. Bloch's conjecture predicts that the quotient $X/<σ>$ should have trivial Chow group of $0$-cycles. We verify this for Fano varieties of lines on certain special cubic fourfolds having an order $3$ non--symplectic automorphism.
We introduce a notion of volume for an l-adic local system over an algebraic curve and, under some conditions, give a symplectic form on the rigid analytic deformation space of the corresponding geometric local system. These constructions can be viewed as arithmetic analogues of the volume and the Chern-Simons invariants of a representation of the fundamental group of a 3-manifold which fibers over the circle and of the symplectic form on the character varieties of a Riemann surface. We show that the absolute Galois group acts on the deformation space by conformal symplectomorphisms which exte…
We give a short review of the algebraic procedure known as deformation quantisation, which replaces a commutative algebra with a non-commutative algebra. We use this framework to examine how the objects known as wavefunctions, as known in the quantum curve literature, arise from deformation quantisation. We give an example in terms of the planar conic $-y+x^2+2 xy + y^2$, and construct an associated wavefunction. We also give an example of the symplectic reduction of a wavefunction, following a procedure from Kontsevich and Soibelman arXiv:1701.09137.
We formulate a notion of $E_{-1}$ quantisation of $(-2)$-shifted Poisson structures on derived algebraic stacks, depending on a flat right connection on the structure sheaf, as solutions of a quantum master equation. We then parametrise $E_{-1}$ quantisations of $(-2)$-shifted symplectic structures by constructing a map to power series in de Rham cohomology. For derived schemes, we show that these quantisations give rise to classes in Borel--Moore homology, and for a large class of examples we show that the classes are closely related to Borisov--Joyce invariants.
We formulate a notion of $E_0$ quantisation of $(-1)$-Poisson structures on derived Artin $N$-stacks, and construct a map from $E_0$ quantisations of $(-1)$-shifted symplectic structures to power series in de Rham cohomology. For a square root of the dualising line bundle, this gives an equivalence between even power series and self-dual quantisations. In particular, there is a canonical quantisation of any such square root, which localises to recover the perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles on derived DM stacks, thus giving a form of derived categorification of Donaldson--Thomas invariants.
We study the deformations of a holomorphic symplectic manifold $M$, not necessarily compact, over a formal ring. We show (under some additional, but mild, assumptions on $M$) that the coarse deformation space exists and is smooth, finite-dimensional and naturally embedded into $H^2(M)$. For a holomorphic symplectic manifold $M$ which satisfies $H^1(M,{\cal O}_M) = H^2(M,{\cal O}_M)=0$, the coarse moduli of formal deformations is isomorphic to $\Spec\C[[t_1, ..., t_n]]$, where $t_1$, ... $t_n$ are coordinates in $H^2(M)$. This revised version contains one minor improvement: exposition in Subsec…
