We show that Haefliger's differentiable (6,3)-knot bounds, in 6-space, a 4-manifold (a Seifert surface) of arbitrarily prescribed signature. This implies, according to our previous paper, that the Seifert surface has been prolonged in a prescribed direction near its boundary. This aspect enables us to understand a resemblance between Ekholm-Szucs' formula for the Smale invariant and Boechat-Haefliger's formula for Haefliger knots. As a consequence, we show that an immersion of the 3-sphere in 5-space can be regularly homotoped to the projection of an embedding in 6-space if and only if its Smale invariant is even. We also correct a sign error in our previous paper: "A geometric formula for Haefliger knots" [Topology 43 (2004) 1425-1447].
We show that for the spaces of spherical embeddings modulo immersions $\bar{Emb}(S^n,S^{n+q})$ and long embeddings modulo immersions $\bar{Emb}_{\partial}(D^n,D^{n+q})$, the set of connected components is isomorphic to $π_{n+1}(SG,SG_q)$ for $q\geq 3$. As a consequence, we show that all the terms of the long exact sequence of the triad $(SG;SO,SG_q)$ have a geometric meaning relating to spherical embeddings and immersions.
Using spinning we analyze in a geometric way Haefliger's smoothly knotted (4k-1)-spheres in the 6k-sphere. Consider the 2-torus standardly embedded in the 3-sphere, which is further standardly embedded in the 6-sphere. At each point of the 2-torus we have the normal disk pair: a 4-dimensional disk and a 1-dimensional proper sub-disk. We consider an isotopy (deformation) of the normal 1-disk inside the normal 4-disk, by using a map from the 2-torus to the space of long knots in 4-space, first considered by Budney. We use this isotopy in a construction called spinning about a submanifold introdu…
We work in the smooth category. Let $N$ be a closed connected orientable 4-manifold with torsion free $H_1$, where $H_q:=H_q(N;Z)$. Our main result is a complete readily calculable classification of embeddings $N\to R^7$, up to the equivalence relation generated by isotopy and embedded connected sum with embeddings $S^4\to R^7$. Such a classification was already known only for $H_1=0$ by the work of Boéchat, Haefliger and Hudson from 1970. Our classification involves the Boéchat-Haefliger invariant $\varkappa(f)\in H_2$, Seifert bilinear form $λ(f):H_3\times H_3\to Z$ and $β$-invariant $β(f)$ …
In this paper we study the Haefliger invariant for long embeddings $\mathbb{R}^{4k-1}\hookrightarrow\mathbb{R}^{6k}$ in terms of the self-intersections of their projections to $\mathbb{R}^{6k-1}$, under the condition that the projection is a generic long immersion $\mathbb{R}^{4k-1}\looparrowright\mathbb{R}^{6k-1}$. We define the notion of "crossing changes" of the embeddings at the self-intersections and describe the change of the isotopy classes under crossing changes using the linking numbers of the double point sets in $\mathbb{R}^{4k-1}$. This formula is a higher-dimensional analogue to t…
The geometric Hopf invariant of a stable map F is a stable Z_2-equivariant map h(F) such that the stable Z_2-equivariant homotopy class of h(F) is the primary obstruction to F being homotopic to an unstable map. In this paper we express the geometric Hopf invariant of the Umkehr map F of an immersion f:M^m \to N^n in terms of the double point set of f. We interpret the Smale-Hirsch-Haefliger regular homotopy classification of immersions f in the metastable dimension range 3m<2n-1 (when a generic f has no triple points) in terms of the geometric Hopf invariant.
We develop a new approach to the classical problem on isotopy classification of embeddings of manifolds into Euclidean spaces. This approach involves studying of a new embedding invariant, of almost-embeddings and of smoothing, as well as explicit constructions of embeddings. Using this approach we obtain complete concrete classification results below the metastable dimension range, i.e. where the configuration spaces invariant of Haefliger-Wu is incomplete. Note that all known complete concrete classification results, except for the Haefliger classification of links and smooth knots, can be o…
Let K be the space of long j-knots in R^n. In this paper we introduce a graph complex D and a linear map I from D to the de Rham complex of K via configuration space integral, and prove that (1) when both n>j>=3 are odd, the map I is a cochain map if restricted to graphs with at most one loop component, (2) when n-j>=2 is even, the map I is a cochain map if restricted to tree graphs, and (3) when n-j >=3 is odd, the map I added a correction term produces a (2n-3j-3)-cocycle of K which gives a new formulation of the Haefliger invariant when n=6k, j=4k-1 for some k.
We work in the smooth category. If there are knotted embeddings S^n\to R^m, which often happens for 2m<3n+4, then no concrete complete description of embeddings of n-manifolds into R^m up to isotopy was known, except for disjoint unions of spheres. Let N be a closed connected orientable 3-manifold. Our main result is the following description of the set Emb^6(N) of embeddings N\to R^6 up to isotopy. The Whitney invariant W : Emb^6(N) \to H_1(N;Z) is surjective. For each u \in H_1(N;Z) the Kreck invariant η_u : W^{-1}u \to Z_{d(u)} is bijective, where d(u) is the divisibility of the projection …
We answer a question posed by Fielder in [1] concerning two notions of crossing number for algebraic knots $K$ under Hopf fibration, one topological, denoted $h(K)$, the other coming from the realization of such knots around complex singularities, denoted $C_{alg}(K)$. We show that $C_{alg}(K)-h(K)$ can be arbitrarily large. We also give an upper bound for $h$ of some families of knots such as torus knots $T(2,n)$, twist knots and their mirror images.
We consider diagrams of links in $S^2$ obtained by projection from $S^3$ with the Hopf map and the minimal crossing number for such diagrams. Knots admitting diagrams with at most one crossing are classified. Some properties of these knots are exhibited. In particular, we establish which of these knots are algebraic and, for such knots, give an answer to a problem posed by Fiedler.
Using Hirasawa-Murasugi's classification of fibered Montesinos knots we classify the L-space Montesinos knots, providing further evidence towards a conjecture of Lidman-Moore that L-space knots have no essential Conway spheres. In the process, we classify the fibered Montesinos knots whose open books support the tight contact structure on $S^3$. We also construct L-space knots with arbitrarily large tunnel number and discuss the question of whether L-space knots admit essential tangle decompositions in the context of satellite operations and tunnel number.
The fundamental problem of knot theory is to know whether two knots are equivalent or not. As a tool to prove that two knots are different, mathematicians have developed various invariants. Knots invariants are just functions that can be computed from the knot and depend only on the topology of the knot. Here we describe quantum invariants, a powerful family of invariants related to the celebrated Yang-Baxter equation.
A handlebody-knot is a handlebody embedded in the 3-sphere. We establish a uniform method to construct invariants for handlebody-links. We introduce the category $\mathcal{T}$ of handlebody-tangles and present it by generators and relations. The result tells us that every functor on $\mathcal{T}$ that gives rise to invariants is derived from what we call a quantum-commutative quantum-symmetric algebra in the target category. The example of such algebras of our main concern is finite-dimensional unimodular Hopf algebras. We investigate how those Hopf algebras give rise to handlebody-knot invari…
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the categorical structure for a method of defining quantum invariants of knots, links and three-manifolds. These invariants can be defined in terms of right integrals on certain Hopf algebras. We call such an invariant of 3-manifolds a Hennings invariant. The work reported in this paper has its background in previous work of the authors. The present paper gives an abstract description of these structures and shows how the Hopf algebraic image of a knot lies in the center of the corresponding Hopf algebra. The paper also shows how all the axiomatic proper…

We use the terms, knot product and local move, as defined in the text of the paper. Let $n$ be an integer$\geqq3$. Let $\mathcal S_n$ be the set of simple spherical $n$-knots in $S^{n+2}$. Let $m$ be an integer$\geqq4$. We prove that the map $j:\mathcal S_{2m}\to\mathcal S_{2m+4}$ is bijective, where $j(K)=K\otimes$Hopf, and Hopf denotes the Hopf link. Let $J$ and $K$ be 1-links in $S^3$. Suppose that $J$ is obtained from $K$ by a single pass-move, which is a local-move on 1-links. Let $k$ be a positive integer. Let $P\otimes^kQ$ denote the knot product $P\otimes\underbrace{Q\otimes...\otimes …
We consider arrow diagrams of links in $S^3$ and define $k$-moves on such diagrams, for any $k\in\mathbb N$. We study the equivalence classes of links in $S^3$ up to $k$-moves. For $k=2$, we show that any two knots are equivalent, whereas it is not true for links. We show that the Jones polynomial at a $k$-th primitive root of unity is unchanged by a $k$-move, when $k$ is odd. It is multiplied by $-1$, when $k$ is even. It follows that, for any $k\ge 5$, there are infinitely many classes of knots modulo $k$-moves. We use these results to study the Hopf crossing number. In particular, we show t…
We prove that the rank of knot Floer homology detects the Hopf links, and generalize this result further to classify the links of the second smallest knot Floer homology. We also prove a knot Floer homology analog of arXiv:1910.04246v1 [math.GT] and give a partial answer to when the equality holds in the rank inequality between the knot Floer homology of a link and its sublinks.
By using the notion of a rigid R-matrix in a monoidal category and the Reshetikhin--Turaev functor on the category of tangles, we review the definition of the associated invariant of long knots. In the framework of the monoidal categories of relations and spans over sets, by introducing racks associated with pointed groups, we illustrate the construction and the importance of consideration of long knots. Else, by using the restricted dual of algebras and Drinfeld's quantum double construction, we show that to any Hopf algebra $H$ with invertible antipode, one can associate a universal long kno…
We propose a new non-commutative generalization of the representation variety and the character variety of a knot group. Our strategy is to reformulate the construction of the algebra of functions on the space of representations in terms of Hopf algebra objects in a braided category (braided Hopf algebra). The construction works under the assumption that the algebra is braided commutative. The resulting knot invariant is a module with a coadjoint action. Taking the coinvariants yields a new quantum character variety that may be thought of as an alternative to the skein module. We give concrete…
This paper studies rotational virtual knot theory and its relationship with quantum link invariants. Every quantum link invariant for classical knots and links extends to an invariant of rotational virtual knots and links. The paper sets up the background virtual knot theory, defines rotational virtual knot theory, studies an extension of the bracket polynomial and the Manturov parity bracket for rotationals. We give examples of links that are not detected by the bracket polynomial but are detected by the extended parity bracket. Then the general frameworks for oriented and unoriented quantum …
In this paper, we study on knots and closed incompressible surfaces in the 3-sphere via Morse functions. We show that both of knots and closed incompressible surfaces can be isotoped into a "related Morse position" simultaneously. As an application, we have following results. *Smallness of Montesinos tangles with length two and Kinoshita's theta curve *Classification of closed incompressible and meridionally incompressible surfaces in 2-bridge theta-curve and handcuff graph complements and the complements of links which admit Hopf tangle decompositions.
We prove the following: Let $2p + 1$ be no less than 5 and $p$ be a natural number. Let $K$ and $J$ be closed, oriented, $(2p+1)$-dimensional connected, $(p-1)$-connected, simple submanifolds of the standard $(2p+3)$-sphere. Then $K$ is equivalent to $J$ if and only if a Seifert matrix associated with a simple Seifert hypersurface for $K$ is $(-1)^p$-$S$-equivalent to that for $J$. We also discuss the $2p+1=3$ case. This result implies one of our main results: Let $μ$ be a natural number. A 1-link $A$ is pass-move equivalent to a 1-link $B$ if and only if the knot product of $A$ and $μ$ copies…
In GT/0006019 oriented quantum algebras were motivated and introduced in a natural categorical setting. Invariants of knots and links can be computed from oriented quantum algebras, and this includes the Reshetikhin-Turaev theory for Ribbon Hopf algebras. Here we continue the study of oriented quantum algebras from a more algebraic perspective, and develop a more detailed theory for them and their associated invariants.
We construct a cubical CW-complex CK(M^3) whose rational cohomology algebra contains Vassiliev invariants of knots in the 3-manifold M^3. We construct \bar{CK}(R^3) by attaching cells to CK(R^3) for every degenerate 1-singular and 2-singular knot, and we show that π_1(\bar{CK}(R^3))=1 and π_2(\bar{CK}(R^3))=Z. We give conditions for Vassiliev invariants to be nontrivial in cohomology. In particular, for R^3 we show that v_2 uniquely generates H^2(CK,D), where D is the subcomplex of degenerate singular knots. More generally, we show that any Vassiliev invariant coming from the Conway polynomial…
Using elementary equalities between various cables of the unknot and the Hopf link, we prove the Wheels and Wheeling conjectures of [Bar-Natan, Garoufalidis, Rozansky and Thurston, arXiv:q-alg/9703025] and [Deligne, letter to Bar-Natan, January 1996, http://www.ma.huji.ac.il/~drorbn/Deligne/], which give, respectively, the exact Kontsevich integral of the unknot and a map intertwining two natural products on a space of diagrams. It turns out that the Wheeling map is given by the Kontsevich integral of a cut Hopf link (a bead on a wire), and its intertwining property is analogous to the computa…
Three new knot invariants are defined using cocycles of the generalized quandle homology theory that was proposed by Andruskiewitsch and Graña. We specialize that theory to the case when there is a group action on the coefficients. First, quandle modules are used to generalize Burau representations and Alexander modules for classical knots. Second, 2-cocycles valued in non-abelian groups are used in a way similar to Hopf algebra invariants of classical knots. These invariants are shown to be of quantum type. Third, cocycles with group actions on coefficient groups are used to define quandle co…
Link/knot invariants are series with integer coefficients, and it is a long-standing problem to get them positive and possessing cohomological interpretation. Constructing positive "superpolynomials" is not straightforward, especially for colored invariants. A simpler alternative is a multi-parametric generalization of the character expansion, which leads to colored "hyperpolynomials". The third construction involves branes on resolved conifolds, which gives rise to still another family of invariants associated with composite representations. We revisit this triality issue in the simple case o…
Let $L$ be an oriented link with an alternating diagram $D$. It is known that $L$ is a fibered link if and only if the surface $R$ obtained by applying Seifert's algorithm to $D$ is a Hopf plumbing. Here, we call $R$ a Hopf plumbing if $R$ is obtained by successively plumbing finite number of Hopf bands to a disk. In this paper, we discuss its extension so that we show the following theorem. Let $R$ be a Seifert surface obtained by applying Seifert's algorithm to an almost alternating diagrams. Then $R$ is a fiber surface if and only if $R$ is a Hopf plumbing. We also show that the above theor…
This paper is a memory of the work and influence of Vaughan Jones. It is an exposition of the remarkable breakthroughs in knot theory and low dimensional topology that were catalyzed by his work. The paper recalls the inception of the Jones polynomial and the author's discovery of the bracket polynomial model for the Jones polynomial. We then describe some of the developments in knot theory that were inspired by the Jones polynomial and involve variations and generalizations of this invariant. The paper is written in the form of a personal odyssey and with the intent to show different mathemat…
A bottom tangle is a tangle in a cube consisting only of arc components, each of which has the two endpoints on the bottom line of the cube, placed next to each other. We introduce a subcategory B of the category of framed, oriented tangles, which acts on the set of bottom tangles. We give a finite set of generators of B, which provides an especially convenient way to generate all the bottom tangles, and hence all the framed, oriented links, via closure. We also define a kind of "braided Hopf algebra action" on the set of bottom tangles. Using the universal invariant of bottom tangles associat…
By twisted quantum invariants we mean polynomial invariants of knots in the three-sphere endowed with a representation of the fundamental group into the automorphism group of a Hopf algebra $H$. These are obtained by the Reshetikhin-Turaev construction extended to the $\mathrm{Aut}(H)$-twisted Drinfeld double of $H$, provided $H$ is finite dimensional and $\mathbb{N}^m$-graded. We show that the degree of these polynomials is bounded above by $2g(K)\cdot d(H)$ where $g(K)$ is the Seifert genus of a knot $K$ and $d(H)$ is the top degree of the Hopf algebra. When $H$ is an exterior algebra, our t…
We compute the invariants for a class of knots and links in arbitrary representations in $S^3/\mathbb{Z}_p$ in the large $k$ (level), large $N$ (rank) limit, keeping $N/(k+N)=λ$ fixed, in $U(N)$ and $Sp(N)$ Chern-Simons theories. Using the relation between the saddle point description and collective field theory, we first find that the invariants for the Hopf link and unknot are given by the on shell collective field theory action. We next show that the results of these two invariants can be used to compute the invariants of other torus knots and links. We also discuss the large $N$ phase stru…
In this paper we construct a new basis for the cyclotomic completion of the center of the quantum $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ in terms of the interpolation Macdonald polynomials. Then we use a result of Okounkov to provide a dual basis with respect to the quantum Killing form (or Hopf pairing). The main applications are: 1) cyclotomic expansions for the $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ Reshetikhin--Turaev link invariants and the universal $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ knot invariant; 2) an explicit construction of the unified $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ invariants for integral homology 3-spheres using universal Kirby colors. These results …
