Each loop $ψ$ in the group $\text{Ham}(M)$ of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a symplectic manifold $M$ determines a fibration $E$ on $S^2$, whose coupling class \cite{G-L-S} is denoted by $c$. If $VTE$ is the vertical tangent bundle of $E$, we relate the characteristic number $\int_E c_1(VTE)c^n$ with the Maslov index of the linearized flow $ψ_{t*}$ and the Chern class $c_1(TM)$. We give the value of this characteristic number for loops of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms of Hirzebruch surfaces.
We develop notions of twisted spinor bundle and twisted pre-quantum bundle on quasi-Hamiltonian G-spaces. The main result of this paper is that we construct a Dirac operator with index given by positive energy representation of loop group. This generalizes the quantization of Hamiltonian $G$-spaces to quasi-Hamiltonian G-spaces.
We construct a minimax selector for eventually quadratic hamiltonians on cotangent bundles. We use it to give a relation between Hofer's energy and Mather's action minimizing function. We also study the local flatness of the set of twist maps.
In this paper, for a variety of nonholonomic (reducible) Hamiltonian systems, we first give to various distributional Hamiltonian systems, by analyzing carefully the dynamics and structures of the nonholonomic Hamiltonian systems. Secondly, we derive precisely the geometric constraint conditions of the induced distributional two-form for the nonholonomic dynamical vector field, which are called the Type I and Type II of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Thirdly, we generalize the above results for the nonholonomic reducible Hamiltonian systems with symmetries, as well as with momentum maps, and prove…
We show that the Hamiltonian action satisfies the Palais-Smale condition over a "mixed regularity" space of loops in cotangent bundles, namely the space of loops with regularity $H^s$, $s\in (\frac 12, 1)$, in the base and $H^{1-s}$ in the fiber direction. As an application, we give a simplified proof of a theorem of Hofer-Viterbo on the existence of closed characteristic leaves for certain contact type hypersufaces in cotangent bundles.
We show that the existence of noncontractible periodic orbits for compactly supported time-dependent Hamiltonian on the disk cotangent bundle of a Finsler manifold provided that the Hamiltonian is sufficiently large over the zero section. We generalize the BPS capacities and earlier constructions of Weber (2006 Duke Math. J. 133, 527-568) and other authors Biran et al (2003 Duke Math. J. 119, 65-118) to the Finsler setting. We then obtain a number of applications including: (1) generalizing the main theorem of Xue (2017 J. Symplectic Geom. 15, 905-936) to the Lie group setting, (2) preservatio…
We prove that on the twisted cotangent bundle of a closed manifold with an exact magnetic form, a Hamiltonian system of a time-dependent Tonelli Hamiltonian function possesses infinitely many brake orbits. More precisely, by applying Legendre transform we show that there are infinitely many symmetric orbits of the dual Euler-Lagrange system on the configuration space. This result contains an assertion for the existence of infinitely many symmetric orbits of Tonelli Euler-Lagrange systems given by G. Lu at the end of [Lu09a, Remark 6.1]. In this paper, we will present a complete proof of this a…
For many classes of symplectic manifolds, the Hamiltonian flow of a function with sufficiently large variation must have a fast periodic orbit. This principle is the base of the notion of Hofer-Zehnder capacity and some other symplectic invariants and leads to numerous results concerning existence of periodic orbits of Hamiltonian flows. Along these lines, we show that given a negatively curved manifold M, a neigbhourhood U of M in the cotangent bundle, a sufficiently small magnetic field and a non-trivial free homotopy class of loops, then the magnetic flow of a Hamiltonian with big enough va…
We propose a novel approach to contact Hamiltonian mechanics which, in contrast to the one dominating in the literature, serves also for non-trivial contact structures. In this approach Hamiltonians are no longer functions on the contact manifold M itself but sections of a line bundle over M or, equivalently, 1-homogeneous functions on a certain GL(1,R)-principal bundle P\to M which is equipped with a homogeneous symplectic form ω. In other words, our understanding of contact geometry is that it is not an `odd-dimensional cousin' of symplectic geometry but rather a part of the latter, namely `…

Let $M$ be a closed manifold and consider the Hamiltonian flow associated to an autonomous Tonelli Hamiltonian $H:T^*M\rightarrow \mathbb R$ and a twisted symplectic form. In this paper we study the existence of contractible periodic orbits for such a flow. Our main result asserts that if $M$ is not aspherical, then contractible periodic orbits exist for almost all energies above the maximum critical value of $H$.
In this paper, some of formulations of Hamilton-Jacobi equations for Hamiltonian system and regular reduced Hamiltonian systems are given. At first, an important lemma is proved, and it is a modification for the corresponding result of Abraham and Marsden in [1], such that we can prove two types of geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theorem for a Hamiltonian system on the cotangent bundle of a configuration manifold, by using the symplectic structure and dynamical vector field. Then these results are generalized to the regular reducible Hamiltonian system with symmetry and momentum map, by using the re…
Let $LG$ be the loop group of a compact, connected Lie group $G$. We show that the tangent bundle of any proper Hamiltonian $LG$-space $\mathcal{M}$ has a natural completion $\overline{T}\mathcal{M}$ to a strongly symplectic $LG$-equivariant vector bundle. This bundle admits an invariant compatible complex structure within a natural polarization class, defining an $LG$-equivariant spinor bundle $\mathsf{S}_{\overline{T}\mathcal{M}}$, which one may regard as the Spin$_c$-structure of $\mathcal{M}$. We describe two procedures for obtaining a finite-dimensional version of this spinor module. In o…
We prove the Conley conjecture for cotangent bundles of oriented, closed manifolds, and Hamiltonians which are quadratic at infinity, i.e., we show that such Hamiltonians have infinitely many periodic orbits. For the conservative systems, similar results have been proved by Lu and Mazzucchelli using convex Hamiltonians and Lagrangian methods. Our proof uses Floer homological methods from Ginzburg's proof of the Conley Conjecture for closed symplectically aspherical manifolds.
Let $π: P\to B$ be a locally trivial fiber bundle over a connected CW complex $B$ with fiber equal to the closed symplectic manifold $(M,\om)$. Then $π$ is said to be a symplectic fiber bundle if its structural group is the group of symplectomorphisms $\Symp(M,\om)$, and is called Hamiltonian if this group may be reduced to the group $\Ham(M,\om)$ of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms. In this paper, building on prior work by Seidel and Lalonde, McDuff and Polterovich, we show that these bundles have interesting cohomological properties. In particular, for many bases $B$ (for example when $B$ is a…
We prove a reduction theorem for the tangent bundle of a Poisson manifold $(M, π)$ endowed with a pre-Hamiltonian action of a Poisson Lie group $(G, π_G)$. In the special case of a Hamiltonian action of a Lie group, we are able to compare our reduction to the classical Marsden-Ratiu reduction of $M$. If the manifold $M$ is symplectic and simply connected, the reduced tangent bundle is integrable and its integral symplectic groupoid is the Marsden-Weinstein reduction of the pair groupoid $M \times \bar{M}$.
In this paper, we prove homological stability of symplectomorphisms and extended hamiltonians of surfaces made discrete. We construct an isomorphism from the stable homology group of symplectomorphisms and extended Hamiltonians of surfaces to the homology of certain infinite loop spaces. We use these infinite loop spaces to study characteristic classes of surface bundles whose holonomy groups are area preserving, in particular we give a homotopy theoretic proof of the Kotschick-Morita theorem.
We give a construction of Piunikhin--Salamon--Schwarz isomorphism between the Morse homology and the Floer homology generated by Hamiltonian orbits starting at the zero section and ending at the conormal bundle. We also prove that this isomorphism is natural in the sense that it commutes with the isomorphisms between the Morse homology for different choices of the Morse function and the Floer homology for different choices of the Hamiltonian. We define a product on the Floer homology and prove triangle inequality for conormal spectral invariants with respect to this product.
Using the framework of quasi-Hamiltonian actions, we compute the obstruction to prequantization for the moduli space of flat ${\rm PU}(p)$-bundles over a compact orientable surface with prescribed holonomies around boundary components, where $p>2$ is prime.
Viterbo has conjectured that any Lagrangian in the unit co-disc bundle of a torus which is Hamiltonian isotopic to the zero-section satisfies a uniform bound on its spectral norm; a recent result by Shelukhin showed that this is indeed the case. The modest goal of this note is to explore two natural generalisations of the above geometric setting in which the bound of the spectral norm fails: first, passing to Legendrian isotopies in the contactisation of the unit co-disc bundle (Hamiltonian isotopies lift to Legendrian isotopies) and, second, considering Hamiltonian isotopies but after modifyi…
Consider the cotangent bundle of a closed Riemannian manifold and an almost complex structure close to the one induced by the Riemannian metric. For Hamiltonians which grow for instance quadratically in the fibers outside of a compact set, one can define Floer homology and show that it is naturally isomorphic to singular homology of the free loop space. We review the three isomorphisms constructed by Viterbo (1996), Salamon-Weber (2003) and Abbondandolo-Schwarz (2004). The theory is illustrated by calculating Morse and Floer homology in case of the euclidean n-torus. Applications include exist…
In lines 8-11 of \cite[pp. 2977]{Lu} we wrote: "For integer $m\ge 3$, if $M$ is $C^m$-smooth and $C^{m-1}$-smooth $L:\R\times TM\to\R$ satisfies the assumptions (L1)-(L3), then the functional ${\cal L}_τ$ is $C^2$-smooth, bounded below, satisfies the Palais-Smale condition, and all critical points of it have finite Morse indexes and nullities (see \cite[Prop.4.1, 4.2]{AbF} and \cite{Be})." However, as proved in \cite{AbSc1} the claim that ${\cal L}_τ$ is $C^2$-smooth is true if and only if for every $(t,q)$ the function $v\mapsto L(t,q,v)$ is a polynomial of degree at most 2. So the arguments …
For a class of closed manifolds N, we construct a family of functions on the Hamiltonian group G of the cotangent bundle T*N. These restrict to homogeneous quasi-morphisms on the subgroup generated by Hamiltonians with support in a given cotangent ball bundle. The family is parametrized by the first real cohomology of N, and in the case N=T^n, it coincides with Viterbo's symplectic homogenization operator. These functions have applications to the algebraic and geometric structure of G and its subgroups, to symplectic rigidity, and to Aubry-Mather and weak KAM theory.
Given a Lie group $G$, we elaborate the dynamics on $T^*T^*G$ and $T^*TG$, which is given by a Hamiltonian, as well as the dynamics on the Tulczyjew symplectic space $TT^*G$, which may be defined by a Lagrangian or a Hamiltonian function. As the trivializations we adapted respect the group structures of the iterated bundles, we exploit all possible subgroup reductions (Poisson, symplectic or both) of higher order dynamics.
In this paper, the Conley conjecture, which were recently proved by Franks and Handel \cite{FrHa} (for surfaces of positive genus), Hingston \cite{Hi} (for tori) and Ginzburg \cite{Gi} (for closed symplectically aspherical manifolds), is proved for $C^1$-Hamiltonian systems on the cotangent bundle of a $C^3$-smooth compact manifold $M$ without boundary, of a time 1-periodic $C^2$-smooth Hamiltonian $H:\R\times T^\ast M\to\R$ which is strongly convex and has quadratic growth on the fibers. Namely, we show that such a Hamiltonian system has an infinite sequence of contractible integral periodic …
Making use of the extended flux homomorphism on the group of symplectomorphisms of a closed oriented surface of genus at least 2, we introduce new characteristic classes of foliated surface bundles with symplectic, equivalently area-preserving, total holonomy. These characteristic classes are stable with respect to the genus and we show that they are highly non-trivial. We also prove that the second homology of the group of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms equipped with the discrete topology is very large.
We examine open books with powers of fibered Dehn twists as monodromy. The resulting contact manifolds can be thought of as Boothby-Wang orbibundles over symplectic orbifolds. Using the mean Euler characteristic of equivariant symplectic homology we can distinguish these contact manifolds and hence show that some fibered Dehn twists are not symplectically isotopic to the identity relative to the boundary. This complements results of Biran and Giroux.
We prove several results on symplectic varieties with a Hamiltonian action of a reductive group having invariant Lagrangian subvarieties. Our main result states that the images of the moment maps of a Hamiltonian variety and of the cotangent bundle over an invariant Lagrangian subvariety coincide. This implies that the complexity and rank of the Lagrangian subvariety are equal to the half of the corank and to the defect of the Hamiltonian variety, respectively. This result generalizes a theorem of Panyushev on the complexity and rank of a conormal bundle. A simple elementary proof of this theo…
