Let $π: P\to B$ be a locally trivial fiber bundle over a connected CW complex $B$ with fiber equal to the closed symplectic manifold $(M,\om)$. Then $π$ is said to be a symplectic fiber bundle if its structural group is the group of symplectomorphisms $\Symp(M,\om)$, and is called Hamiltonian if this group may be reduced to the group $\Ham(M,\om)$ of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms. In this paper, building on prior work by Seidel and Lalonde, McDuff and Polterovich, we show that these bundles have interesting cohomological properties. In particular, for many bases $B$ (for example when $B$ is a sphere, a coadjoint orbit or a product of complex projective spaces) the rational cohomology of $P$ is the tensor product of the cohomology of $B$ with that of $M$. As a consequence the natural action of the rational homology $H_k(\Ham(M))$ on $H_*(M)$ is trivial for all $M$ and all $k > 0$.
Added: The erratum makes a small change to Theorem 1.1 concerning the characterization of Hamiltonian bundles.
We show that every de Rham cohomology class on the total space of a symplectic fiber bundle with closed Lefschetz fibers, admits a Poisson harmonic representative in the sense of Brylinski. The proof is based on a new characterization of closed Lefschetz manifolds.
We give detailed descriptions of gluing pseudoholomorphic maps in symplectic geometry, especially in the presence of an obstruction bundle. The main motivation is to try to compare the symplectic and enumerative invariants of algebraic manifolds. These descriptions can also be used to enumerate rational curves with high-order degeneracies of local nature in projective spaces.
Let E be the total space of a locally trivial torus bundle over the surface Σ_g of genus g>1. Using the Seiberg--Witten theory and spectral sequences we prove that E carries a symplectic structure if and only if the homology class of the fiber [T^2] is nonzero in H_2(E,R).
We construct a family version of symplectic Floer cohomology for magnetic cotangent bundles, without any restrictions on the magnetic form, using the dissipative method for compactness introduced in \cite{Groman2015}. As an application, we deduce that if $N$ is a closed manifold and $ σ$ is a magnetic form that is not weakly exact, then the $ π_1$-sensitive Hofer-Zehnder capacity of any compact set in the magnetic cotangent bundle determined by $ σ$ is finite.
We prove that symplectic cohomology for open convex symplectic manifolds is invariant when the symplectic form undergoes deformations which may be non-exact and non-compactly supported, provided one uses the correct local system of coefficients in Floer theory. As a sample application beyond the Liouville setup, we describe in detail the symplectic cohomology for disc bundles in the twisted cotangent bundle of surfaces, and we deduce existence results for periodic magnetic geodesics on surfaces. In particular, we show the existence of geometrically distinct orbits by exploiting properties of t…
In this paper, we compute the embedded contact homology (ECH) capacities of the disk cotangent bundles $D^*S^2$ and $D^*\mathbb{R} P^2$. We also find sharp symplectic embeddings into these domains. In particular, we compute their Gromov widths. In order to do that, we explicitly calculate the ECH chain complexes of $S^*S^2$ and $S^* \mathbb{R} P^2$ using a direct limit argument on the action inspired by Bourgeois's Morse-Bott approach and ideas from Nelson-Weiler's work on the ECH of prequantization bundles. Moreover, we use integrable systems techniques to find explicit symplectic embeddings.…
We describe how the result in [1] extends to prove the existence of a Serre type spectral sequence converging to the symplectic homology SH_*(M) of an exact Sub-Liouville domain M in a cotangent bundle T*N. We will define a notion of a fiber-wise symplectic homology SH_*(M,q) for each point q in N, which will define a graded local coefficient system on N. The spectral sequence will then have page two isomorphic to the homology of N with coefficients in this graded local system.
Let $V$ be a bounded domain with smooth boundary in $\R^n$, and $D^*V$ denote its disc cotangent bundle. We compute symplectic homology of $D^*V$, in terms of relative homology of loop spaces on the closure of $V$. We use this result to show that Floer-Hofer capacity of $D^*V$ is between $2r(V)$ and $2(n+1)r(V)$, where $r(V)$ denotes inradius of $V$. As an application, we study periodic billiard trajectories on $V$.
We study symplectic rigidity phenomena for fibers in cotangent bundles of Riemann surfaces. Our main result can be seen as a generalization to open Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus of work of Eliashberg and Polterovich on the Nearby Lagrangian Conjecture for $T^* \mathbb{R}^2$. As a corollary, we answer a strong version in dimension $2n=4$ of a question of Eliashberg about linking of Lagrangian disks in $T^* \mathbb{R}^n$, which was previously answered by Ekholm and Smith in dimensions $2n \geq 8$.
For a smooth map $f:X^4\toΣ^2$ that is locally modeled by holomorphic maps, the domain is shown to admit a symplectic structure that is symplectic on some regular fiber, if and only if $f^*[Σ]\ne0$. If so, the space of symplectic forms on $X$ that are symplectic on all fibers is nonempty and contractible. The cohomology classes of these forms vary with the maximum possible freedom on the reducible fibers, subject to the obvious constraints. The above results are derived via an analogous theorem for locally holomorphic maps $f:X^{2n}\to Y^{2n-2}$ with $Y$ symplectic.
We construct open symplectic manifolds which are convex at infinity ("Liouville manifolds") and which are diffeomorphic, but not symplectically isomorphic, to cotangent bundles T^*S^{n+1}, for any n+1 \geq 3. These manifolds are constructed as total spaces of Lefschetz fibrations, where the fibre and all but one of the vanishing cycles are fixed. We show that almost any choice of the last vanishing cycle leads to a nonstandard symplectic structure (those choices which yield standard T^*S^{n+1} can be exactly determined). The Corrigendum changes the statement and proof of Lemma 1.1 in the origi…
In this paper, we prove the existence of certain symplectic conifold transitions on all $CP^{1}$-bundles over symplectic 4--manifolds, which generalizes Smith, Thomas and Yau's examples of symplectic conifold transitions on trivial $CP^{1}$-bundles over Kähler surfaces. Our main result is to determine the diffeomorphism types of such symplectic conifold transitions of $CP^{1}$-bundles. In particular, this implies that in the case of trivial $CP^{1}$-bundles over projective surfaces, Smith, Thomas and Yau's examples of symplectic conifold transitions are diffeomorphic to Kähler 3--folds.
We consider certain type of fiber bundles with odd dimensional compact contact base, exact symplectic fibers, and the structure group contained in the group of exact symplectomorphisms of the fiber. We call such fibrations "contact symplectic fibrations". By a result of Hajduk-Walczak, some of these admit contact structures which are "compatible" (in a certain sense) with the corresponding fibration structures. We show that this result can be extended to get a compatible contact structure on any contact symplectic fibration, and also that isotopic contact structures on the base produce isotopi…
In this note we complete the discussion of minimality of symplectic fiber sums. We find, that for fiber sums along spheres the minimality of the sum is determined by the cases discussed by M. Usher and one additional case: If the sum is the result of the rational blow-down of a symplectic -4-sphere in X, then it is non-minimal if X contains a certain configuration of exceptional spheres in relation to this -4-sphere.
This article addresses the problem of developing an extension of the Marsden- Weinstein reduction process to symplectic Lie algebroids, and in particular to the case of the symplectic cover of a fiberwise linear Poisson structure, whose reduction process is the analogue to cotangent bundle reduction in the context of Lie algebroids.
We prove that if a closed oriented 4-manifold X fibers over a 2- or 3-dimensional manifold, in most cases all of its virtual Betti numbers are infinite. In turn, we show that a closed oriented 4-manifold X which is not a tower of torus bundles and fibering over a 2- or 3-dimensional manifold does not admit a torsion symplectic canonical class, nor is of Kodaira dimension zero.
We study Reeb dynamics on prequantization circle bundles and the filtered (equivariant) symplectic homology of prequantization line bundles, aka negative line bundles, with symplectically aspherical base. We define (equivariant) symplectic capacities, obtain an upper bound on their growth, prove uniform instability of the filtered symplectic homology and touch upon the question of stable displacement. We also introduce a new algebraic structure on the positive (equivariant) symplectic homology capturing the free homotopy class of a closed Reeb orbit -- the linking number filtration -- and use …
We describe Lefschetz-Bott fibrations on complex line bundles over symplectic manifolds explicitly. As an application, we construct more than one strong symplectic filling of the link of the $A_{k}$-type singularity. In the appendix, we show that the total space of a Lefschetz-Bott fibration over the unit disk serves as a strong symplectic filling of a contact manifold compatible with an open book induced by the fibration.
In a previous article, we introduced a reduction procedure for locally conformally symplectic manifolds at any regular value of the momentum mapping. We use this construction to prove an analogue of a well-known theorem in the symplectic setting about the reduction of cotangent bundles.
We show that there exist symplectic structures on a $\mathbb CP^1$-bundle over $\mathbb CP^2$ that do not admit a compatible Kähler structure. These symplectic structures were originally constructed by Tolman and they have a Hamiltonian $\mathbb T^2$-symmetry. Tolman's manifold was shown to be diffeomorphic to a $\mathbb CP^1$-bundle over $\mathbb CP^{2}$ by Goertsches, Konstantis, and Zoller. The proof of our result relies on Mori theory, and on classical facts about holomorphic vector bundles over $\mathbb CP^{2}$.
We use Menke's JSJ-type decomposition theorem for symplectic fillings to reduce the classification of strong and exact symplectic fillings of virtually overtwisted torus bundles to the same problem for tight lens spaces. For virtually overtwisted structures on elliptic or parabolic torus bundles, this gives a complete classification. For virtually overtwisted structures on hyperbolic torus bundles, we show that every strong or exact filling arises from a filling of a tight lens space via round symplectic 1-handle attachment, and we give a condition under which distinct tight lens space filling…
We give a method to lift $(2,0)$-tensors fields on a manifold $M$ to build symplectic forms on $TM$. Conversely, we show that any symplectic form $\Om$ on $TM$ is symplectomorphic, in a neighborhood of the zero section, to a symplectic form built naturally from three $(2,0)$-tensor fields associated to $\Om$.
We define Symplectic cohomology groups for a class of symplectic fibrations with closed symplectic base and convex at infinity fiber. The crucial geometric assumption on the fibration is a negativity property reminiscent of negative curvature in complex vector bundles. When the base is symplectically aspherical we construct a spectral sequence of Leray-Serre type converging to the Symplectic cohomology groups of the total space, and we use it to prove new cases of the Weinstein conjecture.
We consider circle bundles over compact three-manifolds with symplectic total spaces. We show that the base of such a space must be irreducible or the product of the two-sphere with the circle. We then deduce that such a bundle admits a symplectic form if and only if it admits one that is invariant under the circle action in three special cases: namely if the base is Seifert fibered, has vanishing Thurston norm, or if the total space admits a Lefschetz fibration.
In this paper, we study strong symplectic fillability and Stein fillability of some tight contact structures on negative parabolic and negative hyperbolic torus bundles over the circle. For the universally tight contact structure with twisting $π$ in $S^1$-direction on a negative parabolic torus bundle, we completely determine its strong symplectic fillability and Stein fillability. For the universally tight contact structure with twisting $π$ in $S^1$-direction on a negative hyperbolic torus bundle, we give a necessary condition for it being strongly symplectically fillable. For the virtually…
We study weak versus strong symplectic fillability of some tight contact structures on torus bundles over the circle. In particular, we prove that almost all of these tight contact structures are weakly, but not strongly symplectically fillable. For the 3-torus this theorem was established by Eliashberg.
We examine the structure of the cotangent bundle $T^{*}X$ of an algebraic variety $X$ acted on by a reductive group $G$ from the viewpoint of equivariant symplectic geometry. In particular, we construct an equivariant symplectic covering of $T^{*}X$ by the cotangent bundle of a certain variety of horospheres in $X$, and integrate the invariant collective motion on $T^{*}X$. These results are based on a "local structure theorem" describing the action of a certain parabolic in $G$ on an open subset of $X$, which is interesting by itself.
We define contact fiber bundles and investigate conditions for the existence of contact structures on the total space of such a bundle. The results are analogous to minimal coupling in symplectic geometry. The two applications are construction of K-contact manifolds generalizing Yamazaki's fiber join construction and a cross-section theorem for contact moment maps
In this note we discuss the effect of the symplectic sum along spheres in symplectic four-manifolds on the Kodaira dimension of the underlying symplectic manifold. We find that the Kodaira dimension is non-decreasing. Moreover, we are able to obtain precise results on the structure of the manifold obtained from the blow down of an embedded symplectic -4-sphere.
In this survey we describe an interplay between Procesi bundles on symplectic resolutions of quotient singularities and Symplectic reflection algebras. Procesi bundles were constructed by Haiman and, in a greater generality, by Bezrukavnikov and Kaledin. Symplectic reflection algebras are deformations of skew-group algebras defined in complete generality by Etingof and Ginzburg. We construct and classify Procesi bundles, prove an isomorphism between spherical Symplectic reflection algebras, give a proof of wreath Macdonald positivity and of localization theorems for cyclotomic Rational Cheredn…
Symplectic torus bundles $ξ:T^{2}\to E\to B$ are classified by the second cohomology group of $B$ with local coefficients $H_{1}(T^{2})$. For $B$ a compact, orientable surface, the main theorem of this paper gives a necessary and sufficient condition on the cohomology class corresponding to $ξ$ for $E$ to admit a symplectic structure compatible with the symplectic bundle structure of $ξ$ : namely, that it be a torsion class. The proof is based on a group-extension-theoretic construction of J. Huebschmann (Sur les premieres differentielles de la suite spectrale cohomologique d'une extension de …
Given a projective sequence of Banach bundles, each one provided with a of weak symplectic form, we look for conditions under which, the corresponding sequence of weak symplectic forms gives rise to weak symplectic form on the projective limit bundle. Then we apply this results to the tangent bundle of a projective limit of Banach manifolds. This naturally leads to ask about conditions under which the Darboux Theorem is also true on the projective limit of Banach manifolds. We will give some necessary and some sufficient conditions so that such a result is true. Then we discuss why, in general…
The purpose of this note is to present a construction of an infinite family of symplectic tori T_{p} representing an arbitrary multiple of the homology class of the fiber of an elliptic surface E(n), for n > 2, such that, for i \neq j, there is no orientation-preserving diffeomorphism between (E(n),T_{i}) and (E(n),T_{j}). In particular, these tori are mutually nonisotopic. This complements previous results of Fintushel and Stern, showing in particular the existence of such phenomenon for a primitive class.
We give sufficient conditions for the existence of a Dirac structure on the total space of a Poisson fiber bundle endowed with a compatible connection. We also show that Cartan and Cartan-Hannay-Berry connections give rise to coupling Dirac structures.
A locally conformally symplectic (LCS) form is an almost symplectic form $ω$ such that a closed one-form $θ$ exists with $dω=θ\wedgeω$. A fiber bundle with LCS fiber $(F, ω,θ)$ is called LCS if the transition maps are diffeomorphisms of $F$ preserving $ω$ (and hence $θ$). In this paper, we find conditions for the total space of an LCS fiber bundle to admit an LCS form which restricts to the LCS form of the fibers. This is done by using the coupling form introduced by Sternberg and Weinstein, \cite{gls}, in the symplectic case. The construction is related to an adapted Hamiltonian action called…
Symplectic 4-manifolds with Kodaira dimension zero can be viewed as symplectic Calabi-Yau surfaces. We are able to completely determine their Betti numbers by proving two general results on quaternionic vector bundles.
For a class of closed manifolds N, we construct a family of functions on the Hamiltonian group G of the cotangent bundle T*N. These restrict to homogeneous quasi-morphisms on the subgroup generated by Hamiltonians with support in a given cotangent ball bundle. The family is parametrized by the first real cohomology of N, and in the case N=T^n, it coincides with Viterbo's symplectic homogenization operator. These functions have applications to the algebraic and geometric structure of G and its subgroups, to symplectic rigidity, and to Aubry-Mather and weak KAM theory.
In this note we study the contact geometry of symplectic divisors. We show the contact structure induced on the boundary of a divisor neighborhood is invariant under toric and interior blow-ups and blow-downs. We also construct an open book decomposition on the boundary of a concave divisor neighborhood and apply it to the study of universally tight contact structures of contact torus bundles.
Let M be the total space of a negative line bundle over a closed symplectic manifold. We prove that the quotient of quantum cohomology by the kernel of a power of quantum cup product by the first Chern class of the line bundle is isomorphic to symplectic cohomology. We also prove this for negative vector bundles and the top Chern class. We explicitly calculate the symplectic and quantum cohomologies of O(-n) over P^m. For n=1, M is the blow-up of C^{m+1} at the origin and symplectic cohomology has rank m. The symplectic cohomology vanishes if and only if the first Chern class of the line bundl…
This paper is essentially made of the three preprints arXiv:1212.5818, arXiv:1311.0187, arXiv:1603.07876 gathered in a single text, with simplified proofs. We recall several results of the microlocal theory of sheaves of Kashiwara-Schapira and apply them to study the symplectic geometry of cotangent bundles. We explain how we can recover the Gromov nonsqueezing theorem, the Gromov-Eliashberg rigidity theorem, the existence of graph selectors, we prove a three cusps conjecture about curves on the sphere and we recover more recent results on the topology of exact Lagrangian submanifolds of cotan…
Branched covers of orbit cylinders are the basic examples of holomorphic curves studied in symplectic field theory. Since all curves with Fredholm index one can never be regular for any choice of cylindrical almost complex structure, we generalize the obstruction bundle technique of Taubes for determining multiple cover contributions from Gromov-Witten theory to the case of moduli spaces with boundary. Our result proves that the differential in rational symplectic field theory and contact homology is strictly decreasing with respect to the natural action filtration.
We prove a stability result for volume forms on fiber bundles with compact base and noncompact fibers. This generalizes the classical results of Moser and Greene--Shiohama, and recent work by the authors.
We show that, for any two orientable smooth open 4-manifolds $X_0,X_1$ which are homeomorphic, their cotangent bundles $T^*X_0,T^*X_1$ are symplectomorphic with their canonical symplectic structure. In particular, for any smooth manifold $R$ homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^4$, the standard Stein structure on $T^*R$ is Stein homotopic to the standard Stein structure on $T^*\mathbb{R}^4 = \mathbb{R}^8$. We use this to show that any exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$ embeds in the standard symplectic $\mathbb{R}^8$ as a Lagrangian submanifold. As a corollary, we show that $\mathbb{R}^8$ has uncountably many smoot…
We prove that a compact 4-manifold which supports a circle-invariant fat SO(3)-bundle is diffeomorphic to either S^4 or CP^2-bar. The proof involves studying the resulting Hamiltonian circle action on an associated symplectic 6-manifold. Applying our result to the twistor bundle of Riemannian 4-manifolds shows that S^4 and CP^2-bar are the only 4-manifolds admitting circle-invariant metrics solving a certain curvature inequality. This can be seen as an analogue of Hsiang-Kliener's theorem that only S^4 and CP^2 admit circle-invariant metrics of positive sectional curvature.
