Rational double points are the simplest surface singularities. In this essay we will be mainly concerned with the geometry of the exceptional set corresponding to the resolution of a rational double point. We will derive the classification of rational double points in terms of Dynkin diagrams.
A Fano manifold $X$ with nef tangent bundle is of flag-type if it has the same type of elementary contractions as a complete flag manifold. In this paper we present a method to associate a Dynkin diagram $\mathcal{D}(X)$ with any such $X$, based on the numerical properties of its contractions. We then show that $\mathcal{D}(X)$ is the Dynkin diagram of a semisimple Lie group. As an application we prove that Campana-Peternell conjecture holds when $X$ is a flag-type manifold whose Dynkin diagram is $A_n$ ($X$ is shown to be the complete flag in $\mathbb{P}^n$).
We classify normal supersingular K3 surfaces Y with total Milnor number 20 in characteristic p, where p is an odd prime that does not divide the discriminant of the Dynkin type of the rational double points on Y.
We consider the Berglund-Hübsch transpose of a bimodal invertible polynomial and construct a triangulated category associated to the compactification of a suitable deformation of the singularity. This is done in such a way that the corresponding Grothendieck group with the (negative) Euler form can be described by a graph which corresponds to the Coxeter-Dynkin diagram with respect to a distinguished basis of vanishing cycles of the bimodal singularity.
We enumerate the number of staircase diagrams over classically finite $E$-type Dynkin diagrams, extending the work of Richmond and Slofstra (Staircase Diagrams and Enumeration of smooth Schubert varieties) and completing the enumeration of staircase diagrams over finite type Dynkin diagrams. The staircase diagrams are in bijection to smooth and rationally smooth Schubert varieties over $E$-type thereby giving an enumeration of these varieties.
With the help of Lusztig's canonical basis, we study local intersection cohomology of the Zariski closures of orbits of representations of a quiver of type A, D or E. In particular, we characterize the rationally smooth orbits and prove that orbit closures are smooth if and only if they are rationally smooth. This provides an analogue of theorems of V. Deodhar, and J. Carrell and D. Peterson on Schubert varieties.
Let $V$ be a complex vector space on which a finite group $G$ acts by linear transformations. Let $W = V \oplus V^*$ be the sum of $V$ with its dual $V^*$. We prove that if the quotient $W/G$ admits a smooth crepant resolution, then the subgroup $G \subset Aut V$ is generated by complex reflections. We also obtain some results on the structure of smooth crepant resolutions of the quotients $W/G$, where $W$ is a symplectic vector space, and $G \subset Aut W$ is a finite group of symplectic linear transformations of the vector space $W$.
Fourteen kinds of triangle singularities with modality one in Arnold's classification list are discussed. We consider which kinds of combinations of rational double points can appear on small deformation fibers of the singularities. We show that possible combinations of rational double points can be described by a unique principle from the view point of Dynkin graphs.
We treat nine of fourteen triangle singularities in Arnold's classification list of singularities. We consider what kind of combinations of rational double points can appear on their small deformation fibers. We show their combinations are described by a simple priciple using Dynkin graphs.
The theory of Hitchin systems is something like a "global theory of Lie groups", where one works over a Riemann surface rather than just at a point. We'll describe how one can take this analogy a few steps further by attempting to make precise the class of rich geometric objects that appear in this story (including the non-compact case), and discuss their classification, outlining a theory of "Dynkin diagrams" as a step towards classifying some examples of such objects.
For a group $H$ and a non empty subset $Γ\subseteq H$, the commuting graph $G=\mathcal{C}(H,Γ)$ is the graph with $Γ$ as the node set and where any $x,y \in Γ$ are joined by an edge if $x$ and $y$ commute in $H$. We prove that any simple graph can be obtained as a commuting graph of a Coxeter group, solving the realizability problem in this setup. In particular we can recover every Dynkin diagram of ADE type as a commuting graph. Thanks to the relation between the ADE classification and finite subgroups of $\SL(2,\C)$, we are able to rephrase results from the {\em McKay correspondence} in term…
Let M and N be two representations of an extended Dynkin quiver such that the orbit O_N of N is contained in the orbit closure \bar{O_M} and has codimension two. We show that the pointed variety $(\bar{O_M},N)$ is smoothly equivalent to a simple surface singularity of type A_n, or to the cone over a rational normal curve.
Motivated by the enhanced gauge symmetry phenomenon of the physics literature and mirror symmetry, this paper constructs an action of an Artin group on the derived category of coherent sheaves of a smooth quasiprojective threefold containing a configuration of ruled surfaces described by a finite type Dynkin diagram. The action extends over deformations of the threefold via a compatible action of the corresponding reflection group on the base of its deformation space. All finite type Dynkin diagrams are realized.
Any irreducible Dynkin diagram $Δ$ is obtained from an irreducible Dynkin diagram $Δ_h$ of type $\mathrm{ADE}$ by folding via graph automorphisms. For any simple complex Lie group $G$ with Dynkin diagram $Δ$ and compact Riemann surface $Σ$, we give a Lie-theoretic construction of families of quasi-projective Calabi-Yau threefolds together with an action of graph automorphisms over the Hitchin base associated to the pair $(Σ, G)$ . These give rise to Calabi-Yau orbifolds over the same base. Their intermediate Jacobian fibration, constructed in terms of equivariant cohomology, is isomorphic to t…
We study the partial resolutions of singularities related to Hilbert schemes of points on an affine space. Consider a quotient of a vector space $V$ by an action of a finite group $G$ of linear transforms. Under some additional assumptions, we prove that the partial desingularization of Hilbert type is smooth only if the action of $G$ is generated by complex reflections. This is used to study the subvarieties of a Hilbert scheme of a complex torus. We show that any subvariety of a generic deformation of a Hilbert scheme of a torus is birational to a quotient of another torus by an action of a …
The author, and independently De Concini, conjectured that the monodromy of the Casimir connection of a simple Lie algebra g is described by the quantum Weyl group operators of the quantum group U_h(g). The aim of this paper, and of its sequel [TL4], is to prove this conjecture. The proof relies upon the use of quasi-Coxeter algebras, which are to generalised braid groups what Drinfeld's quasitriangular quasibialgebras are to the Artin braid groups B_n. Using an appropriate deformation cohomology, we reduce the conjecture to the existence of a quasi-Coxeter, quasitriangular quasibialgebra stru…
Gabrielov numbers describe certain Coxeter-Dynkin diagrams of the 14 exceptional unimodal singularities and play a role in Arnold's strange duality. In a previous paper, the authors defined Gabrielov numbers of a cusp singularity with an action of a finite abelian subgroup $G$ of ${\rm SL}(3,\CC)$ using the Gabrielov numbers of the cusp singularity and data of the group $G$. Here we consider a crepant resolution $Y \to \CC^3/G$ and the preimage $Z$ of the image of the Milnor fibre of the cusp singularity under the natural projection $\CC^3 \to \CC^3/G$. Using the McKay correspondence, we compu…
A normal projective complex surface is called a rational homology projective plane if it has the same Betti numbers with the complex projective plane $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$. It is known that a rational homology projective plane with quotient singularities has at most 5 singular points. So far all known examples have at most 4 singular points. In this paper, we prove that a rational homology projective plane $S$ with quotient singularities such that $K_S$ is nef has at most 4 singular points except one case. The exceptional case comes from Enriques surfaces with a configuration of 9 smooth ra…
Let $G$ be a reductive group defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ such that the Dynkin diagram of $G$ is the disjoint union of diagrams of types $G_{2}, F_{4}, E_{6}, E_{7}, E_{8}$. We show that the degree $3$ unramified cohomology of the classifying space of $G$ is trivial. In particular, combined with articles by Merkurjev \cite{Mer17} and the author \cite{Baek}, this completes the computations of degree $3$ unramified cohomology and reductive invariants for all split semisimple groups of a homogeneous Dynkin type.
Let Y be a normal projective variety and p a morphism from X to Y, which is a projective holomorphic symplectic resolution. Namikawa proved that the Kuranishi deformation spaces Def(X) and Def(Y) are both smooth, of the same dimension, and p induces a finite branched cover f from Def(X) to Def(Y). We prove that f is Galois. We proceed to calculate the Galois group G, when X is simply connected, and its holomorphic symplectic structure is unique, up to a scalar factor. The singularity of Y is generically of ADE-type, along every codimension 2 irreducible component B of the singular locus, by Na…
Folding of ADE-Dynkin diagrams according to graph automorphisms yields irreducible Dynkin diagrams of ABCDEFG-types. This folding procedure allows to trace back the properties of the corresponding simple Lie algebras or groups to those of ADE-type. In this article, we implement the techniques of folding by graph automorphisms for Hitchin integrable systems. We show that the fixed point loci of these automorphisms are isomorphic as algebraic integrable systems to the Hitchin systems of the folded groups away from singular fibers. The latter Hitchin systems are isomorphic to the intermediate Jac…
