Motivated by the enhanced gauge symmetry phenomenon of the physics literature and mirror symmetry, this paper constructs an action of an Artin group on the derived category of coherent sheaves of a smooth quasiprojective threefold containing a configuration of ruled surfaces described by a finite type Dynkin diagram. The action extends over deformations of the threefold via a compatible action of the corresponding reflection group on the base of its deformation space. All finite type Dynkin diagrams are realized.
In this article we prove a fundamental inequality between Artin-Mazur heights and Yobuko heights of certain proper log smooth schemes of Cartier type over a fine log scheme whose underlying scheme is the spectrum of a perfect field $κ$ of characteristic $p>0$. We also prove that the cohomologies of Witt-sheaves of them are finitely generated ${\cal W}(κ)$-modules if the Yobuko heights of them are finite. As an application, we prove that the $p$-primary torsion parts of the Chow groups of codimension $2$ of proper smooth threefolds over $κ$ is of finite cotype if the Yobuko heights of them are …
We consider the structure of the derived categories of coherent sheaves on Fano threefolds with Picard number 1 and describe a strange relation between derived categories of different threefolds. In the Appendix we discuss how the ring of algebraic cycles of a smooth projective variety is related to the Grothendieck group of its derived category.
We construct $S$-linear semiorthogonal decompositions of derived categories of smooth Fano threefold fibrations $X/S$ with relative Picard rank $1$ and rational geometric fibers and discuss how the structure of components of these decompositions is related to rationality properties of $X/S$.
We consider the derived category of an Artin-Mumford quartic double solid blown-up at ten ordinary double points. We show that it has a semi-orthogonal decomposition containing the derived category of the Enriques surface of a Reye congruence. This answers affirmatively a conjecture by Ingalls and Kuznetsov.
The main propose of this paper is to show that Bridgeland's moduli space of perverse point sheaves for certain flopping contractions gives the flops, and the Fourier-Mukai transform given by the birational correspondence of the flop is an equivalence between bounded derived categories.
We construct an equivalence between the derived category of sheaves on an elliptic threefold without a section and a derived category of twisted sheaves (modules over an Azumaya algebra) on any small resolution of its relative Jacobian.
In this sequel of arXiv:1211.5294 and arXiv:1211.5948, we develop an adic formalism for étale cohomology of Artin stacks and prove several desired properties including the base change theorem. In addition, we define perverse t-structures on Artin stacks for general perversity, extending Gabber's work on schemes. Our results generalize results of Laszlo and Olsson on adic formalism and middle perversity. We continue to work in the world of $\infty$-categories in the sense of Lurie, by enhancing all the derived categories, functors, and natural transformations to the level of $\infty$-categories…
We establish a formula for computing the unramified Brauer group of tame conic bundle threefolds in characteristic 2. The formula depends on the arrangement and residue double covers of the discriminant components, the latter being governed by Artin-Schreier theory (instead of Kummer theory in characteristic not 2). We use this to give new examples of threefold conic bundles defined over the integers that are not stably rational over the complex numbers.
This paper contains some applications of Fourier-Mukai techniques to the birational geometry of threefolds. In particular, we prove that birational Calabi-Yau threefolds have equivalent derived categories. To do this we show how flops arise naturally as moduli spaces of perverse coherent sheaves.
We show that the projectivization of the exceptional rank 2 vector bundle on an arbitrary smooth V14 Fano threefold after a certain natural flop turns into the projectivization of an instanton vector bundle on a smooth cubic threefold. And vice versa, starting from a smooth cubic threefold with an instanton vector bundle of charge 2 on it we reconstruct V14 threefold. Relying on the geometric properties of the above correspondence we prove that the orthogonals to the exceptional pairs in the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on a smooth V14 threefold and on the corresponding cubic…

We describe an infinite set of smooth projective threefolds that have equivalent derived categories but are not isomorphic, contrary to a conjecture of Kawamata. These arise as blow-ups of $\mathbb P^3$ at various configurations of 8 points, which are related by Cremona transformations.
We generalise the techniques of arXiv:0908.1963 to describe derived deformations in simplicial categories. This allows us to consider deformation problems with higher automorphisms, such as chain complexes (which have homotopies) and stacks (which have 2-automorphisms). We also give a general approach for studying deformations of diagrams.
A powerful tool of investigation of Fano varieties is provided by exceptional collections in their derived categories. Proving the fullness of such a collection is generally a nontrvial problem, usually solved on a case-by-case basis, with the aid of a deep understanding of the underlying geometry. Likewise, when an exceptional collection is not full, it is not straightforward to determine whether its "residual" category, i.e., its right orthogonal, is the derived category of a variety. We show how one can use the existence of Bridgeland stability condition these residual categories (when they…
Using a relative version of Auslander's formula, we give a functorial approach to show that the bounded derived category of every Artin algebra admits a categorical resolution. This, in particular, implies that the bounded derived categories of Artin algebras of finite global dimension determine bounded derived categories of all Artin algebras. Hence, this paper can be considered as a typical application of functor categories, introduced in representation theory by Auslander, to categorical resolutions.
We prove the elliptic transformation law of Jacobi forms for the generating series of Pandharipande--Thomas invariants of an elliptic Calabi--Yau 3-fold over a reduced class in the base. This proves part of a conjecture by Huang, Katz, and Klemm. For the proof we construct an involution of the derived category and use wall-crossing methods. We express the generating series of PT invariants in terms of low genus Gromov--Witten invariants and universal Jacobi forms. As applications we prove new formulas and recover several known formulas for the PT invariants of $\mathrm{K3} \times E$, abelian 3…
We remove the global quotient presentation input in the theory of windows in derived categories of smooth Artin stacks of finite type. As an application, we use existing results on flipping of strata for wall-crossing of Gieseker semi-stable torsion-free sheaves of rank two on rational surfaces to produce semi-orthogonal decompositions relating the different moduli stacks. The complementary pieces of these semi-orthogonal decompositions are derived categories of products of Hilbert schemes of points on the surface.
The goal of this paper is to give an explicit description of the triangulated categories of Tate and Artin-Tate motives with finite coefficients Z/m over a field K containing a primitive m-root of unity as the derived categories of exact categories of filtered modules over the absolute Galois group of K with certain restrictions on the successive quotients. This description is conditional upon (and its validity is equivalent to) certain Koszulity hypotheses about the Milnor K-theory/Galois cohomology of K. This paper also purports to explain what it means for an arbitrary nonnegatively graded …
We discuss a relation between the structure of derived categories of smooth projective varieties and their birational properties. We suggest a possible definition of a birational invariant, the derived category analogue of the intermediate Jacobian, and discuss its possible applications to the geometry of prime Fano threefolds and cubic fourfolds.
We reprove the Lefschetz trace formula for stacks (in the context of derived categories and the six operations for stacks developed by Laszlo and Olsson), and give the meromorphic continuation of L-series (in particular, zeta functions) of Artin stacks over a finite field. We also give an upper bound for the weights of the cohomology groups of stacks, and an "independence of l" result for a certain class of quotient stacks.
We prove that the dg category of perfect complexes on a smooth, proper Deligne-Mumford stack over a field of characteristic zero is geometric in the sense of Orlov, and in particular smooth and proper. On the level of triangulated categories, this means that the derived category of perfect complexes embeds as an admissible subcategory into the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth, projective variety. The same holds for a smooth, projective, tame Artin stack over an arbitrary field.
We show that some hypergeometric monodromy groups in Sp(4,Z) split as free or amalgamated products and hence by cohomological considerations give examples of Zariski dense, non-arithmetic monodromy groups of real rank 2. In particular, we show that the monodromy of the natural quotient of the Dwork family of quintic threefolds in P^{4} splits as Z*Z/5. As a consequence, for a smooth quintic threefold X we show that a certain group of autoequivalences of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves is an Artin group of dihedral type.
We develop a general theory which enables the computation of the Picard group of a symmetric monoidal triangulated category, equipped with a weight structure, in terms of the Picard group of the associated heart. As an application, we compute the Picard group of several categories of motivic nature - mixed Artin motives, mixed Artin-Tate motives, motivic spectra, noncommutative mixed Artin motives, noncommutative mixed motives of central simple algebras, noncommutative mixed motives of separable algebras - as well as the Picard group of the derived categories of symmetric ring spectra.
We generalize a classical result about the genus of curves in projective space by Gruson and Peskine to principally polarized abelian threefolds of Picard rank one. The proof is based on wall-crossing techniques for ideal sheaves of curves in the derived category. In the process, we obtain bounds for Chern characters of other stable objects such as rank two sheaves. The argument gives a proof for projective space as well. In this case these techniques also indicate an approach for a conjecture by Hartshorne and Hirschowitz and we prove first steps towards it.
We propose a construction of a tensor exact category F_X^m of Artin-Tate motivic sheaves with finite coefficients Z/m over an algebraic variety X (over a field K of characteristic prime to m) in terms of etale sheaves of Z/m-modules over X. Among the objects of F_X^m, in addition to the Tate motives Z/m(j), there are the cohomological relative motives with compact support M_cc^m(Y/X) of varieties Y quasi-finite over X. Exact functors of inverse image with respect to morphisms of algebraic varieties and direct image with compact supports with respect to quasi-finite morphisms of varieties Y\to …
This paper suggests a new approach to questions of rationality of threefolds based on category theory. Following M. Ballard, D. Favero, L. Katzarkov (ArXiv:1012.0864) and D. Favero, L. Katzarkov (Noether--Lefschetz Spectra and Algebraic cycles, in preparation) we enhance constructions from A. Kuznetsov (arXiv:0904.4330) by introducing Noether--Lefschetz spectra --- an interplay between Orlov spectra (C. Oliva, Algebraic cycles and Hodge theory on generalized Reye congruences, Compos. Math. 92, No. 1 (1994) 1--22) and Hochschild homology. The main goal of this paper is to suggest a series of in…
We prove that two general Enriques surfaces defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from $2$ are isomorphic if their Kuznetsov components are equivalent. We apply the same techniques to give a new simple proof of a conjecture by Ingalls and Kuznetsov relating the derived categories of the blow-up of general Artin\textendash Mumford quartic double solids and of the associated Enriques surfaces. This paper originated from one of the problem sections at the workshop \emph{Semiorthogonal decompositions, stability conditions and sheaves of categories}, Université de T…
Let G be a finite group of automorphisms of a nonsingular complex threefold M such that the canonical bundle omega_M is locally trivial as a G-sheaf. We prove that the Hilbert scheme Y=GHilb M parametrising G-clusters in M is a crepant resolution of X=M/G and that there is a derived equivalence (Fourier- Mukai transform) between coherent sheaves on Y and coherent G-sheaves on M. This identifies the K theory of Y with the equivariant K theory of M, and thus generalises the classical McKay correspondence. Some higher dimensional extensions are possible.
This is the second paper in a series. In part I we developed deformation theory of objects in homotopy and derived categories of DG categories. Here we extend these (derived) deformation functors to an appropriate bicategory of artinian DG algebras and prove that these extended functors are pro-representable in a strong sense.
This is the first paper in a series. We develop a general deformation theory of objects in homotopy and derived categories of DG categories. Namely, for a DG module $E$ over a DG category we define four deformation functors $\Def ^{\h}(E)$, $\coDef ^{\h}(E)$, $\Def (E)$, $\coDef (E)$. The first two functors describe the deformations (and co-deformations) of $E$ in the homotopy category, and the last two - in the derived category. We study their properties and relations. These functors are defined on the category of artinian (not necessarily commutative) DG algebras.
This is the fourth (and last) prepublication version of a book on derived categories, that will be published by Cambridge University Press. The purpose of the book is to provide solid foundations for the theory of derived categories, and to present several applications of this theory in commutative and noncommutative algebra. The emphasis is on constructions and examples, rather than on axiomatics. Here are the topics covered in the book: - A review of standard facts on abelian categories. - Differential graded algebra (DG rings, DG modules, DG categories and DG functors). - Triangulated categ…
Let X be a scheme, and let G be an affine group scheme acting on X. Under reasonable hypotheses on X and G, we construct a t-structure on the derived category of G-equivariant coherent sheaves that in many ways resembles the perverse coherent t-structure, but which incorporates additional information from the G-action. Under certain circumstances, this t-structure, called the "staggered t-structure," has an artinian heart, and its simple objects are particularly easy to describe. We also exhibit two small examples in which the staggered t-structure is better-behaved than the perverse coherent …
A noncommutative deformation of a quadric surface is usually described by a three-dimensional cubic Artin-Schelter regular algebra. In this paper we show that for such an algebra its bounded derived category embeds into the bounded derived category of a commutative deformation of the Hilbert scheme of two points on the quadric. This is the second example in support of a conjecture by Orlov. Based on this example, we formulate an infinitesimal version of the conjecture, and provide some evidence in the case of smooth projective surfaces.
We show that Braun-Chuang-Lazarev's derived quotient prorepresents a naturally defined noncommutative derived deformation functor. Given a noncommutative partial resolution of a Gorenstein algebra, we show that the associated derived quotient controls part of its dg singularity category. We use a recent result of Hua and Keller to prove a recovery theorem, which can be thought of as providing a solution to a derived enhancement of a conjecture made by Donovan and Wemyss about the birational geometry of threefold flops.
We define a particular class of topological field theories associated to open strings and prove the resulting D-branes and open strings form the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves. This derivation is a variant of some ideas proposed recently by Douglas. We then argue that any 0-brane on any Calabi-Yau threefold must become unstable along some path in the Kahler moduli space. As a byproduct of this analysis we see how the derived category can be invariant under a birational transformation between Calabi-Yaus.
In this article we introduce the categories of noncommutative (mixed) Artin motives. In the pure world, we start by proving that the classical category AM(k) of Artin motives (over a base field k) can be characterized as the largest category inside Chow motives which fully-embeds into noncommutative Chow motives. Making use of a refined bridge between pure motives and noncommutative pure motives we then show that the image of this full embedding, which we call the category NAM(k) of noncommutative Artin motives, is invariant under the different equivalence relations and modification of the sym…
If Y,Z are three-dimensional smooth varieties related by a flop, then Bondal and Orlov conjectured that the derived categories of coherent sheaves on Y and Z are equivalent. This conjecture was recently proved by Bridgeland. Our aim in this paper is to give a partially new proof of Bridgeland's result using non-commutative rings. The new proof also covers some mild singular and higher dimensional situations (including the one in the recent paper by Chen: ``Flops and Equivalences of derived Categories for Threefolds with only Gorenstein Singularities'').
We study certain 'weights' for triangulated categories endowed with $t$-structures. Our results axiomatize and describe in detail the relations between the Chow weight structure (introduced in a preceding paper), the (conjectural) motivic t-structure for Voevodsky's motives, and the conjectural weight filtration for them. This picture becomes non-conjectural when restricted to the derived categories of 1-motives (over a smooth base) and of Artin-Tate motives over number fields; other examples include Beilinson's derived category of graded polarizable mixed Hodge complexes and Saito's derived c…
