Some rapidly convergent formulae for special values of the Riemann zeta function are given. We obtain a generating function formula for zeta(4n+3) which generalizes Apery's series for zeta(3), and appears to give the best possible series relations of this type, at least for n<12. The formula reduces to a finite but apparently non-trivial combinatorial identity. The identity is equivalent to an interesting new integral evaluation for the central binomial coefficient. We outline a new technique for transforming and summing certain infinite series. We also derive a beautiful formula which provides strange evaluations of a large new class of non-terminating hypergeometric series. Our main results are shown to be equivalent. At the time this article was submitted for publication back in 1996, these results were only conjectures, but they have subsequently been proved as a result of work due to Gert Almkvist and Andrew Granville.
We document the discovery of two generating functions for the Riemann zeta values zeta(2n+2), analogous to earlier work for zeta(2n+1) and zeta(4n+3). This continues work initiated by Koecher and pursued further by Borwein, Bradley and others.
We discuss some aspects of the search for identities using computer algebra and symbolic methods. The focus is on so-called Apery-like formulae for special values of the Riemann Zeta function. Much work lays ahead in formally proving and properly classifying many of the identities we have uncovered.
This monograph is intended to be considered as my habilitation (D.Sc.) thesis; because of that and as everything has already appeared in English, it is performed exclusively in Russian. The monograph comprises a detailed introduction and seven chapters that represent part of my work influenced by Apéry's proof from 1978 of the irrationality of $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3)$, the values of Riemann's zeta function. Chapter 1 is about "at least one of the four numbers $ζ(5)$, $ζ(7)$, $ζ(9)$ and $ζ(11)$ is irrational" (based in part on arXiv:math.NT/0206176). Chapter 2 explains a connection between the general…
The idea to use classical hypergeometric series and, in particular, well-poised hypergeometric series in diophantine problems of the values of the polylogarithms has led to several novelties in number theory and neighbouring areas of mathematics. Here we present a systematic approach to derive second-order polynomial recursions for approximations to some values of the Lerch zeta function, depending on the fixed (but not necessarily real) parameter $α$ satisfying the condition $\Re(α)<1$. Substituting $α=0$ into the resulting recurrence equations produces the famous recursions for rational appr…
In this paper we derive rapidly converging series for Catalan's constant and for Apéry's constant. The method may be easily generalised to produce new series representations for other values of the Riemann zeta function and the Dirichlet beta function.
In this paper we establish a new summation method by expanding $\prod_{k}(1-\frac{z}{a_{k}})^{-1}$ with two approaches: the Taylor expansion and the infinite partial fraction decomposition. Here we focus on the case when $a_{k}$ is arithmetic sequence. By this summation we obtain many equalities involve Hurwitz zeta function and Gammma function.
In this paper we obtain as our main result new class of formulae expressing correlation integrals of the third-order in $Z$ on disconnected sets $\mathring{G}_1(x),\mathring{G}_2(y)$ by means of an autocorrelative sum of the second order in $Z$. Moreover, the distance of the sets $\mathring{G}_1(x),\mathring{G}_2(y)$ from the set of arguments of autocorrelative sum is extremely big, namely $\sim Aπ(T),\ T\to\infty$, where $π(T)$ is the prime-counting function.
We present several formulae for the large-$t$ asymptotics of the modified Hurwitz zeta function $ζ_1(x,s),x>0,s=σ+it,0<σ\leq1,t>0,$ which are valid to all orders. In the case of $x=0$, these formulae reduce to the asymptotic expressions recently obtained for the Riemann zeta function, which include the classical results of Siegel as a particular case.
We find and prove relationships between Riemann zeta values and central binomial sums. We also investigate alternating binomial sums (also called Apéry sums). The study of non-alternating sums leads to an investigation of different types of sums which we call multiple Clausen values. The study of alternating sums leads to a tower of experimental results involving polylogarithms in the golden ratio. In the non-alternating case, there is a strong connection to polylogarithms of the sixth root of unity, encountered in the 3-loop Feynman diagrams of {\tt hep-th/9803091} and subsequently in hep-ph/…
In this sequel to our recent note it is shown, in a unified manner, by making use of some basic properties of certain special functions, such as the Hurwitz zeta function, Lerch zeta function and Legendre chi function, that the values of all derivatives of four trigonometric functions at rational multiples of $π$ can be expressed in closed form as simple finite sums involving the Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. In addition, some particular cases are considered.
In this paper, we provide explicit upper and lower bounds for the argument of the Riemann zeta-function and its antiderivatives in the critical strip under the assumption of the Riemann hypothesis. This extends the previously known bounds for these quantities on the critical line (and sharpens the error terms in such estimates). Our tools come not only from number theory, but also from Fourier analysis and approximation theory. An important element in our strategy is the ability to solve a Fourier optimization problem with constraints, namely, the problem of majorizing certain real-valued even…
Conditionally on the Riemann Hypothesis we obtain bounds of the correct order of magnitude for the 2k-th moment of the Riemann zeta-function for all positive real k < 2.181. This provides for the first time an upper bound of the correct order of magnitude for some k > 2; the case of k = 2 corresponds to a classical result of Ingham. We prove our result by establishing a connection between moments with k > 2 and the so-called "twisted fourth moment". This allows us to appeal to a recent result of Hughes and Young. Furthermore we obtain a point-wise bound for |zeta(1/2 + it)|^{2r} (with 0 < r < …
The main purpose of this paper is to show some relations between the Riemann zeta function and the generalized Bernoulli polynomials of level $m$. Our approach is based on the use of Fourier expansions for the periodic generalized Bernoulli functions of level $m$, as well as quadrature formulae of Euler-Maclaurin type. Some illustrative examples involving such relations are also given.
New proofs of the duplication formulae for the gamma and the Barnes double gamma functions are derived using the Hurwitz zeta function. Concise derivations of Gauss's multiplication theorem for the gamma function and a corresponding one for the double gamma function are also reported. This paper also refers to some connections with the Stieltjes constants.
We establish a series of integral formulae involving the Hurwitz zeta function. Applications are given to integrals of Bernoulli polynomials, log Gamma(q) and log sin(q).
We establish a series of indefinite integral formulae involving the Hurwitz zeta function and other elementary and special functions related to it, such as the Bernoulli polynomials, ln sin (πq), ln Gamma(q) and the polygamma functions. Many of the results are most conveniently formulated in terms of a family of functions A_k(q):=k zeta'(1-k,q), where k is a natural number, and a family of polygamma functions of negative order, whose properties we study in some detail.
On the one hand the Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein functions have been extended in such a way that they are closely related to the Riemann and other zeta functions. On the other hand the Fourier transform representation of the gamma and generalized gamma functions proved useful in deriving various integral formulae for these functions. In this paper we use the Fourier transform representation of the extended functions to evaluate integrals of products of these functions. In particular we evaluate some integrals containing the Riemann and Hurwitz zeta functions, which had not been evaluated befo…
In this shortnote, a series expansion technique introduced recently by Dancs and He for generating Euler-type formulae for odd zeta values $\:ζ{(2 k +1)}$, $ζ{(s)}$ being the Riemann zeta function and $k$ a positive integer, is modified in a manner to furnish the even zeta values $ ζ{(2k)}$. As a result, I find an elementary proof of $\sum_{n=1}^\infty{1/{n^2}} = {π^2/6}$, as well as a recurrence formula for $ζ{(2k)}$ from which it follows that the ratio ${ζ{(2k)} / π^{2k}}$ is a rational number, without making use of Euler's formula and Bernoulli numbers.
We use exact WKB analysis to derive some concrete formulae in singular quantum perturbation theory, for Schrödinger eigenvalue problems on the real line with polynomial potentials of the form $(q^M + g q^N)$, where $N>M>0$ even, and $g>0$. Mainly, we establish the $g \to 0$ limiting forms of global spectral functions such as the zeta-regularized determinants and some spectral zeta functions.
