Let X be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension d. It is classical that ample line bundles on X satisfy many beautiful geometric, cohomological, and numerical properties that render their behavior particularly tractable. By contrast, examples due to Cutkosky and others have led to the common impression that the linear series associated to non-ample divisors are in general mired in pathology.
However starting with fundamental work of Fujita, Nakayama, and Tsuji, it has recently become apparent that arbitrary effective (or "big") divisors in fact display a surprising number of properties analogous to those of ample line bundles. The key is to study the properties in question from an asymptotic perspective. At the same time, many interesting questions and open problems remain.
The purpose of the present expository note is to give an invitation to this circle of ideas. In the hope that this informal overview might serve as a jumping off point for the technical literature in the area, we sketch many examples but provide no proofs. We focus on one particular invariant -- the "volume" of a line bundle -- that measures the rate of growth of the number of sections of powers of the bundle in question.
We consider degenerations of complex projective Calabi--Yau varieties and study the singularities of $L^2$, Quillen and BCOV metrics on Hodge and determinant bundles. The dominant and subdominant terms in the expansions of the metrics close to non-smooth fibers are shown to be related to well-known topological invariants of singularities, such as limit Hodge structures, vanishing cycles and log-canonical thresholds. We also describe corresponding invariants for more general degenerating families in the case of the Quillen metric.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive affine algebraic group defined over $\mathbb C$, and let $Γ$ be a cocompact lattice in $G$. We prove that any invariant bundle on $G/Γ$ is semistable.
Given a compact Kähler manifold, Geometric Invariant Theory is applied to construct analytic GIT-quotients that are local models for a classifying space of (poly)stable holomorphic vector bundles containing the coarse moduli space of stable bundles as an open subspace. For local models invariant generalized Weil-Petersson forms exist on the parameter spaces, which are restrictions of symplectic forms on smooth ambient spaces. If the underlying Kähler manifold is of Hodge type, then the Weil-Petersson form on the moduli space of stable vector bundles is known to be the Chern form of a certain d…
We introduce several families of filtrations on the space of vector bundles over a smooth projective variety. These filtrations are defined using the large k asymptotics of the kernel of the Dolbeault Dirac operator on a bundle twisted by the kth power of an ample line bundle. The filtrations measure the failure of the bundle to admit a holomorphic structure. We study compatibility under the Chern isomorphism of these filtrations with the Hodge filtration on cohomology.
We generalize the work of Jian Song to compute the alpha invariant of any (nef and big) toric line bundle in terms of the associated polytope. We use the analytic version of the computation of the log canonical threshold of monomial ideals to give the log canonical threshold of any non-negatively curved singular hermitian metric on the line bundle, and deduce the alpha invariant from this.
We produce an equality between the Gromov-Witten invariants of the moduli space M of rank two odd degree stable vector bundles over a Riemann surface $Σ$ and the Donaldson invariants of the algebraic surface $Σ\times P^1$. We discuss on to how extent the Quantum cohomology of M determines its Gromow-Witten invariants. Finally we find the isomorphism between the usual cohomology and the Quantum cohomology for the moduli space M over a Riemann surface of genus g=3.
The holomorphic invariants introduced by Futaki as obstruction to the asymptotic Chow semistability are studied by an algebraic-geometric point of view and are shown to be the Mumford weights of suitable line bundles on the Hilbert scheme. These invariants are calculated in two special cases. The first is a projective bundle over a curve of genus at least two, and it is shown that it is asymptotically Chow polystable (with every polarization) if and only the underlying vector bundle is slope polystable. This proves a conjecture of Morrison with the extra assumption that the involved polarizati…
Let $E$ be a holomorphic vector bundle. Let $θ$ be a Higgs field, that is a holomorphic section of $End(E)\otimesΩ^{1,0}_X$ satisfying $θ^2=0$. Let $h$ be a pluriharmonic metric of the Higgs bundle $(E,θ)$. The tuple $(E,θ,h)$ is called a harmonic bundle. Let $X$ be a complex manifold, and $D$ be a normal crossing divisor of $X$. In this paper, we study the harmonic bundle $(E,θ,h)$ over $X-D$. We regard $D$ as the singularity of $(E,θ,h)$, and we are particularly interested in the asymptotic behaviour of the harmonic bundle around $D$. We will see that it is similar to the asymptotic behaviou…
Let $X$ be a smooth irreducible projective curve with an involution $σ$. A vector bundle $E$ over $X$ is called anti-invariant if there exists an isomorphism $σ^*E\rightarrow E^*$. In this paper, we give a construction of the moduli spaces of anti-invariant vector bundles over $X$.
We suggest an effective procedure to calculate numerical invariants for rank two bundles over blown-up surfaces. We study the moduli spaces M_j of bundles on the blown-up plane splitting over the exceptional divisor as O(j)+O(-j). We use the numerical invariants to give a topological decomposition of M_j.
Given a smooth projective complex curve $X$ with an involution $σ$, we study the Hitchin systems for the locus of anti-invariant (resp. invariant) stable vector bundles over $X$ under $σ$. Using these integrable systems and the theory of the nilpotent cone, we study the irreducibility of these loci. The anti-invariant locus can be thought of as a generalisation of Prym varieties to higher rank.
We define the Gromov-Witten invariants for the parabolic bundles over an orbifold $C$ in various situation. Those bring us to refine this notion to get an accurate computation of the number of maximal subbundles of a sufficiently general parabolic bundle by means of the Intriligator-Varfa formula.
We prove a canonical identifications of the spaces of generalized theta functions on the moduli spaces of anti-invariant vector bundles in the ramified case and the conformal blocks associated to twisted Kac-Moody affine algebras.
Using Hitchin's parameterization of the Hitchin-Teichmüller component of the $SL(n,\mathbb{R})$ representation variety, we study the asymptotics of certain families of representations. In fact, for certain Higgs bundles in the $SL(n,\mathbb{R})$-Hitchin component, we study the asymptotics of the Hermitian metric solving the Higgs bundle equations. This analysis is used to estimate the asymptotics of the corresponding family of flat connections as we scale the differentials by a real parameter. We consider Higgs fields that have only one holomorphic differential $q_n$ of degree $n$ or $q_{n-1}$…
We extend the concept of Segre's Invariant to vector bundles on a surface $X$. For $X=\mathbb{P}^2$ we determine what numbers can appear as the Segre Invariant of a rank $2$ vector bundle with given Chern's classes. The irreducibility of strata with fixed Segre's invariant is proved and its dimensions are computed. Finally, we present applications to the Brill-Noether's Theory for rank $2$ vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^2.$
We define a categorical birational invariant for minimal geometrically rational surfaces with a conic bundle structure over a perfect field via components of a natural semiorthogonal decomposition. Together with the similar known result on del Pezzo surfaces, this provides a categorical birational invariant for geometrically rational surfaces.
If $ D \in X$ is a curve with multiple points in a surface, a parabolic bundle defined on $(X;D)$ away from the singularities can be extended in several ways to a parabolic bundle on a resolution of singularities. We investigate the possible parabolic Chern classes for these extensions.
In this paper, we study questions of Demailly and Matsumura on the asymptotic behavior of dimensions of cohomology groups for high tensor powers of (nef) pseudo-effective line bundles over non-necessarily projective algebraic manifolds. By generalizing Siu's $\partial\overline{\partial}$-formula and Berndtsson's eigenvalue estimate of $\overline{\partial}$-Laplacian and combining Bonavero's technique, we obtain the following result: given a holomorphic pseudo-effective line bundle $(L, h_L)$ on a compact Hermitian manifold $(X,ω)$, if $h_L$ is a singular metric with algebraic singularities, th…
The purpose of this paper is first to give an asymptotic formula for the holomorphic analytic torsion forms of a fibration associated with increasing powers of a given line bundle. Secondly, we generalize this formula, thanks to the theory of Toeplitz operators, in the case where the powers of the line bundle is replaced by the direct image of powers of a line bundle on a bigger manifold. In both cases we have to make fiberwise positivity assumption on the line bundle. This results are the family versions of the results of Bimsut and Vasserot on the asymptotic of the holomorphic torsion.
For any simple Lie algebra, a positive integer, and tuple of compatible weights, the conformal blocks bundle is a globally generated vector bundle on the moduli space of pointed rational curves. We classify all $S_n$-invariant vector bundles of conformal blocks for $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ which have rank one. We show that the cone generated by their base point free first Chern classes is polyhedral, generated by level one divisors.
In this paper, we compute the dimensions of the 1st and 2nd cohomology groups of all the pluricanonical bundles for Hirzebruch surfaces, and the dimensions of the 1st and 2nd cohomology groups of the second pluricanonical bundles for a blow-up of a projective plane along finite many distinct points. Both of them give examples showing that the higher cohomology of the pluricanonical bundle is not deformation invariant.
We study stable vector bundles over the modular curve X(p) corresponding to the principal congruence subgroup of the modular group of prime level p which are invariant with respect to its automorphism group.
We construct canonical heights of subvarieties for dynamical system of several morphisms associated with line bundles defined over a number field, and study some of their properties. We also construct invariant currents for such systems over $\mathbb{C}$.
We use certain special prehomogeneous representations of algebraic groups in order to construct aCM vector bundles, possibly Ulrich, on certain families of hypersurfaces. Among other results, we show that a general cubic hypersurface of dimension seven admitsan indecomposable Ulrich bundle of rank nine, and that a general cubic fourfold admits an unsplit aCM bundle of rank six.
For a semisimple real Lie group $G$, we study topological properties of moduli spaces of polystable parabolic $G$-Higgs bundles over a Riemann surface with a divisor of finitely many distinct points. For a split real form of a complex simple Lie group, we compute the dimension of apparent parabolic Teichm{ü}ller components. In the case of isometry groups of classical Hermitian symmetric spaces of tube type, we provide new topological invariants for maximal parabolic $G$-Higgs bundles arising from a correspondence to orbifold Higgs bundles. Using orbifold cohomology we count the least number of…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of tame harmonic bundles. First of all, we prove a local freeness of the prolongation by an increasing order. Then we obtain the polarized mixed twistor structure. As one of the applications, we obtain the norm estimate of holomorphic or flat sections by weight filtrations of the monodromies. As other application, we establish the correspondence of semisimple regular holonomic $D$-modules and polarizable pure imaginary pure twistor $D$-modules through a tame pure imaginary harmonic bundles, which is a conjecture of Sabbah. Then the regular holonomic version of…
In this note, we investigate the Chern classes of flat bundles in the arithmetic Deligne Cohomology, introduced by Green-Griffiths, Asakura-Saito. We show nontriviality of the Chern classes in some cases and the proof also indicates that generic flat bundles (in its moduli space) can be expected to have nontrivial classes, which is in contrast with some Gauss-Manin systems.
Parabolic Higgs bundles can be described in terms of decorated swamps, which we studied in a recent paper. This description induces a notion of stability of parabolic Higgs bundles depending on a parameter, and we construct their moduli space inside the moduli space of decorated swamps. We then introduce asymptotic stability of decorated swamps in order to study the behavior of the stability condition as one parameter approaches infinity. The main result is the existence of a constant, such that stability with respect to parameters greater than this constant is equivalent to asymptotic stabili…
We study the Saito-Ikeda infinitesimal invariant of the ccle defined by curves in their jacobians using rank (k+1) vector bundles and we give a criterion for which the higher cycle class map is not trivial. When k=2, this turns out to be strictly linked to the Petri map for vector bundles: an explicit construction on a curve of genus g>9 shows the existence of a non trivial element in the higher Griffiths group.
This survey intends to present the basic notions of Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT) through its paradigmatic application in the construction of the moduli space of holomorphic vector bundles. Special attention is paid to the notion of stability from different points of view and to the concept of maximal unstability, represented by the Harder-Narasimhan filtration and, from which, correspondences with the GIT picture and results derived from stratifications on the moduli space are discussed.
In this article we study asymptotic slopes of strongly semistable vector bundles on a smooth projective surface. A connection between asymptotic slopes and strong restriction theorem of a strongly semistable vector bundle is shown. We also give an equivalent criterion of strong semistability of a vector bundle in terms of its asymptotic slopes under some assumptions on the surface and on the bundle.
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface. Let $(E,θ)$ be a stable Higgs bundle of degree $0$ on $X$. Let $h_{\det(E)}$ denote a flat metric of the determinant bundle $\det(E)$. For any $t>0$, there exists a unique harmonic metric $h_t$ of $(E,θ)$ such that $\det(h_t)=h_{\det(E)}$. We prove that if the Higgs bundle is induced by a line bundle on the normalization of the spectral curve, then the sequence $h_t$ is convergent to the naturally defined decoupled harmonic metric at the speed of the exponential order. We also obtain a uniform convergence for such a family of Higgs bundles.
Let $(E,\overline{\partial}_E,θ)$ be a stable Higgs bundle of degree $0$ on a compact connected Riemann surface. Once we fix the flat metric $h_{\det(E)}$ on the determinant of $E$, we have the harmonic metrics $h_t$ $(t>0)$ for the stable Higgs bundles $(E,\overline{\partial}_E,tθ)$ such that $\det(h_t)=h_{\det(E)}$. We study the behaviour of $h_t$ when $t$ goes to $\infty$. First, we show that the Hitchin equation is asymptotically decoupled under the assumption that the Higgs field is generically regular semisimple. We apply it to the study of the so called Hitchin WKB-problem. Second, we s…
Given a submanifold Z inside X, let Y be the blow-up of X along Z. When the normal bundle of Z in X is convex with a minor assumption, we prove that genus-zero GW-invariants of Y with cohomology insertions from X, are identical to GW-invariants of X. Under the same hypothesis, a vanishing theorem is also proved. An example to which these two theorems apply is when the normal bundle is generated by global sections. These two main theorems do not hold for arbitrary blow-ups, and counter-examples are included.
This paper, the last in a series of three, studies vector bundles on an elliptic surface whose determinant has odd intersection number with a general fiber and uses this study to calculate certain coefficients of Donaldson polynomials.
In [LP] the authors defined symplectic "Local Gromov-Witten invariants" associated to spin curves and showed that the GW invariants of a Kahler surface X with p_g>0 are a sum of such local GW invariants. This paper describes how the local GW invariants arise from an obstruction bundle (in the sense of Taubes) over the space of stable maps into curves. Together with the results of [LP], this reduces the calculation of the GW invariants of complex surfaces to computations in the GW theory of curves.
In this note we prove a new explicit formula for the invariants of moduli spaces of twisted Higgs bundles over P^1 and we relate these invariants to the invariants of moduli spaces of representations of some infinite symmetric quiver. The formula can be easily implemented for computations and it is in agreement with the existing conjectures for the invariants of twisted Higgs bundles over curves. Results of this note were presented in Oberwolfach in May 2014.
We use the tropical geometry approach to compute absolute and relative Gromov-Witten invariants of complex surfaces which are $\CC P^1$-bundles over an elliptic curve. We also show that the tropical multiplicity used to count curves can be refined by the standard Block-Göttsche refined multiplicity to give tropical refined invariants. We then give a concrete algorithm using floor diagrams to compute these invariants along with the associated interpretation as operators acting on some Fock space. The floor diagram algorithm allows one to prove the piecewise polynomiality of the relative invaria…
Suppose N is an affine SL(2,R)-invariant submanfold of the moduli space of pairs (M,w) where M is a curve, and w is a holomorphic 1-form on M. We show that the Forni bundle of N (i.e. the maximal SL(2,R)-invariant isometric subbundle of the Hodge bundle of N) is always flat and is always orthogonal to the tangent space of N. As a corollary, it follows that the Hodge bundle of N is semisimple.
In this paper we study the moduli space of representations of a surface group (i.e., the fundamental group of a closed oriented surface) in the real symplectic group Sp(2n,R). The moduli space is partitioned by an integer invariant, called the Toledo invariant. This invariant is bounded by a Milnor-Wood type inequality. Our main result is a count of the number of connected components of the moduli space of maximal representations, i.e. representations with maximal Toledo invariant. Our approach uses the non-abelian Hodge theory correspondence proved in a companion paper arXiv:0909.4487 [math.D…
The zeroth line bundle cohomology on Calabi-Yau three-folds encodes information about the existence of flop transitions and the genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants. We illustrate this claim by studying several Picard number 2 Calabi-Yau three-folds realised as complete intersections in products of projective spaces. Many of these manifolds exhibit certain symmetries on the Picard lattice which preserve the zeroth cohomology.
If a finite group acts holomorphically on a pair (X,L), where X is a complex projective manifold and L a line bundle on it, for every k the space of holomorphic global section of the k-th power of L splits equivariantly according to the irreducible representations of G. We consider the asymptotic growth of these summands, under various positivity conditions on L. The methods apply also to the context of almost complex quantization.
A symplectic bundle over an algebraic curve has a natural invariant $\sLag$ determined by the maximal degree of its Lagrangian subbundles. This can be viewed as a generalization of the classical Segre invariants of a vector bundle. We give a sharp upper bound on $\sLag$ which is analogous to the Hirschowitz bound on the classical Segre invariants. Furthermore, we study the stratifications induced by $\sLag$ on moduli spaces of symplectic bundles, and get a full picture for the case of rank four.
To each connected component in the space of semisimple representations from the orbifold fundamental group of the base orbifold of a Seifert fibered homology 3-sphere into the Lie group U(2,1), we associate a real number called the "orbifold Toledo invariant." For each such orbifold, there exists an elliptic surface over it, called a Dolgachev surface. Using the theory of Higgs bundles on these Dolgachev surfaces, we explicitly compute all values taken on by the orbifold Toledo invariant.
We prove a simple equivalence between the virtual count of rational curves in the total space of an anti-nef line bundle and the virtual count of rational curves maximally tangent to a smooth section of the dual line bundle. We conjecture a generalization to direct sums of line bundles.
It was proved by Fan--Lee and Fan that the absolute Gromov--Witten invariants of two projective bundles $\mathbb P(V_i)\rightarrow X$ are identified canonically when the total Chern classes $c(V_1)=c(V_2)$ for two bundles $V_1$ and $V_2$ over a smooth projective variety $X$. In this note we show that for the two projective completions $\mathbb P(V_i\oplus\mathcal O)$ of $V_i$ and their infinity divisors $\mathbb P(V_i)$, the relative Gromov--Witten invariants of $(\mathbb P(V_i\oplus\mathcal O),\mathbb P(V_i))$ are identified canonically when $c(V_1)=c(V_2)$.
An orthogonal bundle over a curve has an isotropic Segre invariant determined by the maximal degree of a Lagrangian subbundle. This invariant, and the induced stratifications on moduli spaces of orthogonal bundles, were studied for bundles of even rank in [4]. In this paper, we obtain analogous results for bundles of odd rank. We obtain a sharp upper bound on the isotropic Segre invariant. We show the irreducibility of the induced strata on the moduli spaces of orthogonal bundles of odd rank, and compute their dimensions. As a key ingredient of the proofs, we study the correspondence between L…
This paper is the first in a series of three devoted to the smooth classification of simply connected elliptic surfaces. The method is to compute some coefficients of Donaldson polynomials of $SO(3)$ invariants whose second Stiefel-Whitney class is transverse to the unique primitive class $κ$ such that a positive multiple of $κ$ is the class of a general fiber on the surface. In this paper, we collect preliminary results on elliptic surfaces and vector bundles and give the general outline of the argument.
In this paper we characterize the rank two vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^2$ which are invariant under the actions of the parabolic subgroups $G_p:=\mathrm{Stab}_p(\mathrm{PGL}(3))$ fixing a point in the projective plane, $G_L:=\mathrm{Stab}_L(\mathrm{PGL}(3))$ fixing a line, and when $p\in L$, the Borel subgroup $\mathbf{B} = G_p \cap G_L$ of $\mathrm{PGL}(3)$. Moreover, we prove that the geometrical configuration of the jumping locus induced by the invariance does not, on the other hand, characterize the invariance itself. Indeed, we find infinite families that are almost uniform but not almo…
