A complete characterization of two functions $f(x,y)$ and $g(x,y)$ in the $(f,g)$-inversion is presented. As an application to the theory of hypergeometric series, a general bibasic summation formula determined by $f(x,y)$ and $g(x,y)$ as well as four arbitrary sequences is obtained which unifies Gasper and Rahman's, Chu's and Macdonald's bibasic summation formula. Furthermore, an alternative proof of the $(f,g)$-inversion derived from the $(f,g)$-summation formula is presented. A bilateral $(f,g)$-inversion containing Schlosser's bilateral matrix inversion as a special case is also obtained.
In [Electron. J. Combin. 10 (2003), #R10], the author presented a new basic hypergeometric matrix inverse with applications to bilateral basic hypergeometric series. This matrix inversion result was directly extracted from an instance of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation theorem, and involves two infinite matrices which are not lower-triangular. The present paper features three different multivariable generalizations of the above result. These are extracted from Gustafson's A_r and C_r extensions and of the author's recent A_r extension of Bailey's 6-psi-6 summation formula. By combi…
Using matrix inversion and determinant evaluation techniques we prove several summation and transformation formulas for terminating, balanced, very-well-poised, elliptic hypergeometric series.
We present a new matrix inverse with applications in the theory of bilateral basic hypergeometric series. Our matrix inversion result is directly extracted from an instance of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation theorem, and involves two infinite matrices which are not lower-triangular. We combine our bilateral matrix inverse with known basic hypergeometric summation theorems to derive, via inverse relations, several new identities for bilateral basic hypergeometric series.
Using Krattenthaler's operator method, we give a new proof of Warnaar's recent elliptic extension of Krattenthaler's matrix inversion. Further, using a theta function identity closely related to Warnaar's inversion, we derive summation and transformation formulas for elliptic hypergeometric series of Karlsson-Minton-type. A special case yields a particular summation that was used by Warnaar to derive quadratic, cubic and quartic transformations for elliptic hypergeometric series. Starting from another theta function identity, we derive yet different summation and transformation formulas for el…
By some hypergeometric summation theorems, the authors establish a series of new infinite summation formulas involving generalized harmonic numbers related to Riemann-Zeta function, with three different patterns.
We generalize Dahmen-Micchelli deconvolution formula for Box splines with parameters. Our proof is based on identities for Poisson summation of rational functions with poles on hyperplanes.
We prove a general alternate circular summation formula of theta functions, which implies a great deal of theta-function identities. In particular, we recover several identities in Ramanujan's Notebook from this identity. We also obtain two formulaes for $(q;q)_\infty^{2n}$.
In this note, we make a correction of the imaginary transformation formula of Chan and Liu's circular formula of theta functions. We also get the imaginary transformation formulaes for a type of generalized cubic theta functions.
In this paper, by use of matrix inversions, we establish a general $q$-expansion formula of arbitrary formal power series $F(z)$ with respect to the base $$\left\{z^n\frac{(az:q)_n}{(bz:q)_n}\bigg|n=0,1,2\cdots\right\}.$$ Some concrete expansion formulas and their applications to $q$-series identities are presented, including Carlitz's $q$-expansion formula, a new partial theta function identity and a coefficient identity of Ramanujan's ${}_1ψ_1$ summation formula as special cases.
Inspired by the recent work on $q$-congruences and the quadratic summation formula of Rahman, we provide some new $q$-supercongruences. By taking $q\to 1$ in one of our results, we obtain a new Ramanujan-type supercongruence, which has the same right-hand side as Van Hamme's (G.2) supercongruence for $p\equiv 1 \pmod 4$. We also formulate some related challenging conjectures on supercongruences and $q$-supercongruences.
In terms of the difference operators, we establish several curious transformation and summation formulas for basic hypergeometric series. When the parameters are specified, they produce $q$-analogues of Ramanujan's three series for 1/$π$ and other eleven nice $π$-formulas. Meanwhile, $q$-analogues of three beautiful series for $ζ(3)$ are also given in the same way.
By using contiguous relations for basic hypergeometric series, we give simple proofs of Bailey's $_4ϕ_3$ summation, Carlitz's $_5ϕ_4$ summation, Sears' $_3ϕ_2$ to $_5ϕ_4$ transformation, Sears' ${}_4ϕ_3$ transformations, Chen's bibasic summation, Gasper's split poised $_{10}ϕ_9$ transformation, Chu's bibasic symmetric transformation. Along the same line, finite forms of Sylvester's identity, Jacobi's triple product identity, and Kang's identity are also obtained.
We show that several terminating summation and transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series can be proved in a straightforward way. Along the same line, new finite forms of Jacobi's triple product identity and Watson's quintuple product identity are also proved.
In 2017, He [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 145 (2017), 501--508] established two spuercongruences on truncated hypergeometric series and further proposed two related conjectures. Subsequently, Liu [Results Math. 72 (2017), 2057--2066] extended He's formulas and confirmed the second conjecture. However, the first conjecture is still open up to now. With the help of the creative microscoping method and the Chinese remainder theorem for coprime polynomials, we derive several $q$-supercongruences modulo the fourth and fifth powers of a cyclotomic polynomial from Gasper and Rahman's summation formula for …
We compute the number of all rhombus tilings of a hexagon with sides $a,b+1,c,a+1,b,c+1$, of which the central triangle is removed, provided $a,b,c$ have the same parity. The result is a product of four numbers, each of which counts the number of plane partitions inside a given box. The proof uses nonintersecting lattice paths and a new identity for Schur functions, which is proved by means of the minor summation formula of Ishikawa and Wakayama. A symmetric generalization of this identity is stated as a conjecture.
In terms of the derivative operator and three hypergeometric series identities, several interesting summation formulas involving generalized harmonic numbers are established.
Combining the derivative operator with a binomial sum from the telescoping method, we establish a family of summation formulas involving generalized harmonic numbers.
By means of the derivative operator and Chu-Vandermonde convolution, four families of summation formulas involving harmonic numbers with even or odd indexes are established.
We generalize a terminating summation formula to a unilateral nonterminating, and further, a bilateral summation formula by a property of analytic functions. The unilateral one is proved to be a $q$-analogue of a $_4F_3$-summation formula. And, an identity unifying Jacobi's triple product identity and the quintuple product identity is obtained as a special case of the bilateral one.
In terms of the analytic continuation method, we give the united proofs for three $q$-extensions of Dougall's $_2H_2$ summation formula. Some related results are also discussed in this paper.
In this note, we present a simple summation formula for $k$-bonacci numbers. The derivation consists in obtaining the generating function of such numbers, and noting that its evaluation at a particular value yields a formula generalizing a known expression for Fibonacci numbers.
In 2009, the first author proved the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula on hook lengths for integer partitions by using an identity of Macdonald in the framework of type $\widetilde A$ affine root systems, and conjectured that some summations over the set of all partitions of size $n$ are always polynomials in $n$. This conjecture was generalized and proved by Stanley. Recently, Pétréolle derived two Nekrasov-Okounkov type formulas for $\widetilde C$ and $\widetilde C\,\check{}$ which involve doubled distinct and self-conjugate partitions. Inspired by all those previous works, we establish the polynomi…
In this paper we introduce the so-called truncated very-well-poised $_6ψ_6$ series and set up an explicit recurrence relation for it by means of the classical Abel lemma on summation by parts. This new recurrence relation implies an elementary proof of Bailey's well-known $_6ψ_6$ summation formula.
Plane partitions have been widely studied in Mathematics since MacMahon. See, for example, the works by Andrews, Macdonald, Stanley, Sagan and Krattenthaler. The Schur process approach, introduced by Okounkov and Reshetikhin, and further developed by Borodin, Corwin, Corteel, Savelief and Vuletić, has been proved to be a powerful tool in the study of various kinds of plane partitions. The exact enumerations of ordinary plane partitions, shifted plane partitions and cylindric partitions could be derived from two summation formulas for Schur processes, namely, the open summation formula and the …
Noam Elkies and Everett Howe independently noticed a certain elegant product formula for the multiple integral \int_R \prod_{1 \le i < j \le k} (x_j-x_i) dx_1 \cdots dx_k, where the region $R$ is the set of $k$-tuples satisfying $0 < x_1 < \cdots < x_k < 1$. Later this formula turned out to be a special case of a formula of Selberg. We prove an apparently different generalization \int_R \det\left(x_i^{a_j-1}\right)dx_1 \cdots dx_k = {\prod_{1 \le i<j \le k}(a_j-a_i)\over \prod_{1 \le i \le k} a_i \prod_{1 \le i<j \le k} (a_j+a_i)}. The key tool is a limiting form of a remarkable identity of Ok…
The initial purpose of this paper is to provide a combinatorial proof of the minor summation formula of Pfaffians based on the lattice path method. There we related Plücker relations with the minor summation formula of Pfaffians to simplify its proof by lattice paths. The second aim is to find a various applications of the minor summation formula. First we studied a variant of the Sundquist formula established in J. Alg. Combin. {\bf 5} (1996). Next we gave a simple proof of Kawanaka's formula concerning a $q$-series identity involving Schur functions in Osaka J. Math. {\bf 36} (1999). We also…
The Euler-MacLaurin summation formula relates a sum of a function to a corresponding integral, with a remainder term. The remainder term has an asymptotic expansion, and for a typical analytic function, it is a divergent (Gevrey-1) series. Under some decay assumptions of the function in a half-plane (resp. in the vertical strip containing the summation interval), Hardy (resp. Abel-Plana) prove that the asymptotic expansion is a Borel summable series, and give an exact Euler-MacLaurin summation formula. Using a mild resurgence hypothesis for the function to be summed, we give a Borel summable t…
From two q-summation formulas we deduce certain series expansion formulas involving the q-gamma function. With these formulas we can give q-analogues of series expansions for certain constants.
We give new proofs for certain bilateral basic hypergeometric summation formulas using the symmetries of the corresponding series. In particular, we present a proof for Bailey's $_3ψ_3$ summation formula as an application. We also prove a multiple series analogue of this identity by considering hyperoctahedral group symmetries of higher ranks.
A multidimensional generalization of Bailey's very-well-poised bilateral basic hypergeometric ${}_6ψ_6$ summation formula and its Dougall type ${}_5H_5$ hypergeometric degeneration for $q\to 1$ is studied. The multiple Bailey sum amounts to an extension corresponding to the case of a nonreduced root system of certain summation identities associated to the reduced root systems that were recently conjectured by Aomoto and Ito and proved by Macdonald. By truncation, we obtain multidimensional analogues of the very-well-poised unilateral (basic) hypergeometric Rogers ${}_6ϕ_5$ and Dougall ${}_5F_4…
In the open problem session of the FPSAC'03, R.P.Stanley gave an open problem. The purpose of this paper is to give a proof of this open problem. At the end of this paper we present certain corollaries involving the Big Schur functions and some polynomials arising from the Macdonald polynomials, which generalize Stanley's open problem.
Using some properties of the gamma function and the well-known Gauss summation formula for the classical hypergeometric series, we prove a four-parameter series expansion formula, which can produce infinitely many Ramanujan type series for $1/π$.
Using a property of the q-shifted factorial, an identity for q-binomial coefficients is proved, which is used to derive the formulas for the q-binomial coefficient for negative arguments. The result is in agreement with an earlier paper about the normal binomial coefficient for negative arguments. Some new q-binomial summation identities are derived, and the formulas for negative arguments transform some of these summation identities into each other. One q-binomial summation identity is transformed into a new q-binomial summation identity.
For the Möbius spheres $S^{q,p}$, we give alternative elementary proofs of the recursive formulas for GJMS-operators and $Q$-curvatures due to the first author [Geom. Funct. Anal. 23, (2013), 1278-1370; arXiv:1108.0273]. These proofs make essential use of the theory of hypergeometric series.
In 1990, Spieß\, gave some identities of harmonic numbers including the types of $\sum_{\ell=1}^n\ell^k H_\ell$, $\sum_{\ell=1}^n\ell^k H_{n-\ell}$ and $\sum_{\ell=1}^n\ell^k H_\ell H_{n-\ell}$. In this paper, we derive several formulas of hyperharmonic numbers including $\sum_{\ell=0}^{n} {\ell}^{p} h_{\ell}^{(r)} h_{n-\ell}^{(s)}$ and $\sum_{\ell=0}^n \ell^{p}(h_{\ell}^{(r)})^{2}$. Some more formulas of generalized hyperharmonic numbers are also shown.
Using a general $q$-summation formula, we derive a generating function for the $q$-Hahn polynomials, which is used to give a complete proof of the orthogonality relation for the $q$-Hahn polynomials. A new proof of the orthogonality relation for the big $q$-Jacobi polynomials is also given. A simple evaluation of the Nassrallah-Rahman integral is derived by using this summation formula. A new $q$-beta integral formula is established, which includes the Nassrallah-Rahman integral as a special case. The $q$-summation formula also allows us to recover several strange $q$-series identities.
We show that several classical bilateral summation and transformation formulas have semi-finite forms. We obtain these semi-finite forms from unilateral summation and transformation formulas. Our method can be applied to derive Ramanujan's $_1ψ_1$ summation, Bailey's $_2ψ_2$ transformations, and Bailey's $_6ψ_6$ summation.
We derive an explicit sum formula for symmetric Macdonald polynomials. Our expression contains multiple sums over the symmetric group and uses the action of Hecke generators on the ring of polynomials. In the special cases $t=1$ and $q=0$, we recover known expressions for the monomial symmetric and Hall-Littlewood polynomials, respectively. Other specializations of our formula give new expressions for the Jack and $q$-Whittaker polynomials.
Chu has recently shown that the Abel lemma on summations by parts can serve as the underlying relation for Bailey's ${}_6ψ_6$ bilateral summation formula. In other words, the Abel lemma spells out the telescoping nature of the ${}_6ψ_6$ sum. We present a systematic approach to compute Abel pairs for bilateral and unilateral basic hypergeometric summation formulas by using the $q$-Gosper algorithm. It is demonstrated that Abel pairs can be derived from Gosper pairs. This approach applies to many classical summation formulas.
In the previous paper (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 120, 2013, 1263--1284) H. Tagawa and the two authors proposed an algebraic method to compute certain Pfaffians whose form resemble to Hankel determinants associated with moment sequences of the classical orthogonal polynomials. At the end of the paper they offered several conjectures. In this work we employ a completely different method to evaluate this type of Pfaffians. The idea is to apply certain de Bruijn type formula and convert the evaluation of the Pfaffians to the certain Selberg type integrals. This approach works not only for Pfaffian…
