We consider the reaction-diffusion equation \[ T_t = T_{xx} + f(T) \] on $\bbR$ with $T_0(x) \equiv χ_{[-L,L]} (x)$ and $f(0)=f(1)=0$. In 1964 Kanel' proved that if $f$ is an ignition non-linearity, then $T\to 0$ as $t\to\infty$ when $L<L_0$, and $T\to 1$ when $L>L_1$. We answer the open question of relation of $L_0$ and $L_1$ by showing that $L_0=L_1$. We also determine the large time limit of $T$ in the critical case $L=L_0$, thus providing the phase portrait for the above PDE with respect to a 1-parameter family of initial data. Analogous results for combustion and bistable non-linearities are proved as well.
We investigate the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for the Fast Diffusion Equation $u_t=Δu^m$, posed in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, in the exponent range $m_s=(N-2)_+/(N+2)<m<1$. It is known that bounded positive solutions extinguish in a finite time $T>0$, and also that they approach a separate variable solution $u(t,x)\sim (T-t)^{1/(1-m)}S(x)$, as $t\to T^-$. It has been shown recently that $v(x,t)=u(t,x)\,(T-t)^{-1/(1-m)}$ tends to $S(x)$ as $t\to T^-$, uniformly in the relative error norm. Starting from this result, we investigate the fine asymptotic behaviour and prove …
We propose a weak solution theory for the sharp interface limit of the Cahn-Hilliard reaction model, a variational PDE for lithium-ion batteries. An essential feature of this model is the use of Butler-Volmer kinetics for lithium-ion insertion, which arises as a Robin-type boundary condition relating the flux of the chemical potential to the reaction rate, itself a nonlinear function of the chemical potential and the ion concentration. To pass through the nonlinearity as interface width vanishes, we introduce solution concepts at the diffuse and sharp interface level describing dynamics princi…
The phenomenon of finite time extinction of bounded and non-negative solutions to the diffusion equation with strong absorption $$\partial_t u-Δu^m+|x|^σu^q=0, \qquad (t,x)\in(0,\infty)\times\mathbb{R}^N,$$ with $m\geq1$, $q\in(0,1)$ and $σ>0$, is addressed. Introducing the critical exponent $σ^* := 2(1-q)/(m-1)$ for $m>1$ and $σ_*=\infty$ for $m=1$, extinction in finite time is known to take place for $σ\in [0,σ^*)$ and an alternative proof is provided therein. When $m>1$ and $σ\ge σ^*$, the occurrence of finite time extinction is proved for a specific class of initial conditions, thereby sup…
We focus on the (sharp) threshold phenomena arising in some reaction-diffusion equations supplemented with some compactly supported initial data. In the so-called ignition and bistable cases, we prove the first sharp quantitative estimate on the (sharp) threshold values. Furthermore, numerical explorations allow to conjecture some refined estimates. Last we provide related results in the case of a degenerate monostable nonlinearity "not enjoying the hair trigger effect". The dynamics of a reaction-diffusion-advection benthic-drift population model that links changes in the flow regime and habitat availability with population dynamics is studied. In the model, the stream is divided into drift zone and benthic zone, and the population is divided into two interacting compartments, individuals residing in the benthic zone and individuals dispersing in the drift zone. The benthic population growth is assumed to be of strong Allee effect type. The influence of flow speed and individual transfer rates between zones on the population persistence and extinction is cons…
We study the large time behaviour of the reaction-diffsuion equation $\partial_t u=Δu +f(u)$ in spatial dimension $N$, when the nonlinear term is bistable and the initial datum is compactly supported. We prove the existence of a Lipschitz function $s^\infty$ of the unit sphere, such that $u(t,x)$ converges uniformly in $\mathbb{R}^N$, as $t$ goes to infinity, to $U_{c_*}\bigg(|x|-c_*t + \frac{N-1}{c_*} \mathrm{ln}t + s^\infty\Big(\frac{x}{|x|}\Big)\bigg)$, where $U_{c*}$ is the unique 1D travelling profile. This extends earlier results that identified the locations of the level sets of the sol…
We study the Cauchy problem for nonlocal reaction diffusion equations with bistable nonlinearity in 1D spatial domain and investigate the asymptotic behaviors of solutions with a one-parameter family of monotonically increasing and compactly supported initial data. We show that for small values of the parameter the corresponding solutions decay to 0, while for large values the related solutions converge to 1 uniformly on compacts. Moreover, we prove that the transition from extinction (converging to 0) to propagation (converging to 1) is sharp. Numerical results are provided to verify the theo…
We consider a nonlocal parabolic equation describing the dynamics of a population structured by a spatial position and a phenotypic trait, submitted to dispersion , mutations and growth. The growth term may be of the Fisher-KPP type but may also be subject to an Allee effect which can be weak (non-KPP monostable nonlinearity, possibly degenerate) or strong (bistable nonlinearity). The type of growth depends on the value of a variable $θ$ : the Allee threshold, which is considered here as an evolutionary trait. After proving the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem, we study the long time behav…
It is well-known and classical result that spectrally stable traveling waves of a general reaction-diffusion system in one spatial dimension are asymptotically stable with exponential relaxation rates. In a series of works in the 1990's, the authors have considered plane traveling waves for such systems and they have succeeded in showing asymptotic stability for such objects. Interestingly, the (estimates for the) relaxation rates that they have exhibited, are all algebraic and dimension dependent. It was heuristically argued that as the spectral gap closes in dimensions $n\geq 2$, algebraic r…
We consider in this paper a diffusion-convection reaction equation in one space dimension. The main assumptions are about the reaction term, which is monostable, and the diffusivity, which changes sign once or twice; then, we deal with a forward-backward parabolic equation. Our main results concern the existence of globally defined traveling waves, which connect two equilibria and cross both regions where the diffusivity is positive and regions where it is negative. We also investigate the monotony of the profiles and show the appearance of sharp behaviours at the points where the diffusivity …
Stationary solutions of the Fisher-KPP equation with general nonlinear diffusion and arbitrary reactional kinetic orders terms are characterized. Such stationary (separatrix-like) solutions disjoint the blow-up solutions from those showing extinction. In addition a criterion for general parameter values is presented, which allows determining the blow-up or vanishing character of the solutions.
The open question, which seems to be also the final part, in terms of studying the Cauchy problem for the weakly coupled system of damped wave equations or reaction-diffusion equations, is so far known as the sharp lifespan estimates in the critical case. In this paper, we mainly investigate lifespan estimates for solutions to the weakly coupled system of semilinear damped wave equations in the critical case. By using a suitable test function method associated with nonlinear differential inequalities, we catch upper bound estimates for the lifespan. Moreover, we establish polynomial-logarithmi…
In this paper we investigate the dynamical properties of a spatially periodic reaction-diffusion system {whose reaction terms are of hybrid nature in the sense that they are partly competitive and partly cooperative depending on the value of the solution. This class of problems includes various biologically relevant models and in particular many models focusing on the Darwinian evolution of species. We start by studying the principal eigenvalue of the associated differential operator and establishing a minimal speed formula for linear monotone systems. In particular, we show that the generaliz…
We study transition fronts for one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations with compactly perturbed ignition-monostable reactions. We establish an almost sharp condition on reactions which characterizes the existence and non-existence of fronts. In particular, we prove that a strong inhomogeneity in the reaction prevents formation of transition fronts, while a weak inhomogeneity gives rise to a front. Our work extends results and methods introduced by J. Nolen, J.M. Roquejoffre, L. Ryzhik, and A. Zlatoš.

Using pointwise semigroup techniques, we establish sharp rates of decay in space and time of a perturbed reaction diffusion front to its time-asymptotic limit. This recovers results of Sattinger, Henry and others of time-exponential convergence in weighted $L^p$ and Sobolev norms, while capturing the new feature of spatial diffusion at Gaussian rate. Novel features of the argument are a point-wise Green function decomposition reconciling spectral decomposition and short-time Nash-Aronson estimates and an instantaneous tracking scheme similar to that used in the study of stability of viscous sh…
We show that long time solution dynamic for general reaction-advection-diffusion equations with KPP reactions is virtually linear in the following sense. Its leading order depends on the non-linear reaction only through its linearization at $u=0$, and it can also be recovered for general initial data by instead solving the PDE for restrictions of the initial condition to unit cubes on $\bbR^d$ (the latter means that non-linear interaction of these restricted solutions has only lower order effects on the overall solution dynamic). The result holds under a uniform bound on the advection coeffici…
We prove existence and uniqueness of the branch of the so-called \emph{anomalous eternal solutions} in exponential self-similar form for the subcritical fast-diffusion equation with a weighted reaction term $$ \partial_tu=Δu^m+|x|^σu^p, $$ posed in $\real^N$ with $N\geq3$, where $$ 0<m<m_c=\frac{N-2}{N}, \qquad p>1, $$ and the critical value for the weight $$ σ=\frac{2(p-1)}{1-m}. $$ The branch of exponential self-similar solutions behaves similarly as the well-established anomalous solutions to the pure fast diffusion equation, but without a finite time extinction or a finite time blow-up, an…
This paper aims to explore the temporal-spatial spreading and asymptotic behaviors of West Nile virus by a reaction-advection-diffusion system with free boundaries, especially considering the impact of advection term on the extinction and persistence of West Nile virus. We define the spatial-temporal risk index $R^{F}_{0}(t)$ with the advection rate and the general basic disease reproduction number $R^D_0$ to get the vanishing-spreading dichotomy regimes of West Nile virus. We show that there exists a threshold value $μ^{*}$ of the advection rate, and obtain the threshold results of it. When t…
In this paper, we propose and analyze a reaction-diffusion susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) epidemic patch model. The individuals are assumed to reside in different patches, where they are able to move inside and among the patches. The movement of individuals inside the patches is descried by diffusion terms, and the movement pattern among patches is modeled by an essentially nonnegative matrix. We define a basic reproduction number $\mathcal{R}_0$ for the model and show that it is a threshold value for disease extinction versus persistence. The monotone dependence of $\mathcal{R}_0$ on …
In current paper, we put forward a reaction-diffusion system for West Nile virus in spatial heterogeneous and time almost periodic environment with free boundaries to investigate the influences of the habitat differences and seasonal variations on the propagation of West Nile virus. The existence, uniqueness and regularity estimates of the global solution for this disease model are given. Focused on the effects of spatial heterogeneity and time almost periodicity, we apply the principal Lyapunov exponent $λ(t)$ with time $t$ to get the initial infected domain threshold $L^*$ to analyze the lon…
