We construct open domains in Euclidean 3-space which do not admit complete properly immersed minimal surfaces with an annular end. These domains can not be smooth by a recent result of Martin and Morales
We prove that there are no minimal hypersurfaces properly immersed in any region of the Euclidean space bounded by unstable minimal cones. We also prove the analogous result for $r$-minimal hypersurfaces.
We show that the image of a nonconstant conformal harmonic map $\mathbb C\to \mathbb R^3$, not necessarily proper and possibly with branch points, intersects every properly embedded nonflat minimal surface of bounded curvature in $\mathbb R^3$. The same holds if $\mathbb C$ is replaced by any open conformal surface without nonconstant bounded subharmonic functions.
We obtain a Bernstein type result for entire two dimensional minimal graphs in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$, which extends a previous one due to L. Ni. Moreover, we provide a characterization for complex analytic curves.
In 1996, Nadirashvili used Runge's theorem to produce a complete minimal disc inside a ball in R^3. In this paper we generalize the techniques used by Nadirashvili to obtain new examples of complete minimal surfaces inside a ball in R^3, with the conformal structure of an annulus.
Consider a strictly convex bounded regular domain $C$ of $\R^3$. For any arbitrary finite topological type we find a compact Riemann surface $\mathcal{M}$, an open domain $M\subset \mathcal{M}$ with the fixed topological type, and a conformal complete proper minimal immersion $X:M\to C$ which can be extended to a continuous map $X:\overline{M}\to \overline{C}$.
We study compact stable embedded minimal surfaces whose boundary is given by two collections of closed smooth Jordan curves in close planes of Euclidean 3-space. Our main result is a classification of these minimal surfaces, under certain natural geometric asymptotic constraints, in terms of certain associated varifolds which can be enumerated explicitely. One consequence of this result is the uniqueness of the area minimizing examples. Another is the asymptotic nonexistence of stable compact embedded minimal surfaces of positive genus bounded by two convex curves in parallel planes.
Consider a sequence of minimal varieties M_i in a Riemannian manifold N such that the boundary measures are uniformly bounded on compact sets. Let Z be the set of points at which the areas of the M_i blow up. We prove that Z behaves in some ways like a minimal variety without boundary: in particular, it satisfies the same maximum and barrier principles that a smooth minimal submanifold satisfies. For suitable open subsets W of N, this allows one to show that if the areas of the M_i are uniformly bounded on compact subsets of W, then the areas are in fact uniformly bounded on all compact subset…
Following Riemann's idea, we prove the existence of a minimal disk in Euclidean space bounded by three lines in generic position and with three helicoidal ends of angles less than $π$. In the case of general angles, we prove that there exist at most four such minimal disks, we give a sufficient condition of existence in terms of a system of three equations of degree 2, and we give explicit formulas for the Weierstrass data in terms of hypergeometric functions. Finally, we construct constant-mean-curvature-one trinoids in hyperbolic space by the method of the conjugate cousin immersion.
In this paper we find approximate solutions of certain Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problems for minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and null holomorphic curves in $\mathbb{C}^n$ for any $n\ge 3$. With this tool in hand we construct complete conformally immersed minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ which are normalized by any given bordered Riemann surface and have Jordan boundaries. We also furnish complete conformal proper minimal immersions from any given bordered Riemann surface to any smoothly bounded, strictly convex domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$ which extend continuously up to the boundary; f…
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain with convex boundary in a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant. We prove a lower bound of the first eigenvalue of the weighted Laplacian for closed embedded $f$-minimal hypersurfaces contained in $Ω$. Using this estimate, we prove a compactness theorem for the space of closed embedded $f$-minimal surfaces with the uniform upper bounds of genus and diameter in a complete $3$-manifold with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant and admitting an exhaustion by bounded doma…
Enneper's wire, the image of the circle of radius $R$ under Enneper's surface, bounds exactly three minimal surfaces for $R$ between 1 and $\sqrt 3$, and these three surfaces depend continuously on $R$. The other two surfaces (besides Enneper's surface) are absolute minima of area among disk-type surfaces bounded by Enneper's wire. These surfaces each have a unique horizontal tangent plane, whose height can be computed from $R$, and they are invariant under reflections in the planes $x_1=0$ and $x_2 = 0$. These two surfaces have positive second variation of area, and depend continuously on $R$…
Given a closed Riemannian manifold of dimenion less than eight, we prove a compactness result for the space of closed, embedded minimal hypersurfaces satisfying a volume bound and a uniform lower bound on the first eigenvalue of the stability operator. When the latter assumption is replaced by a uniform lower bound on the p-th Jacobi eigenvalue for p greater or equal than 2 one gains strong convergence to a smooth limit submanifold away from at most p-1 points.
Given a compact 3-manifold N without boundary, we prove that for a bumpy metric of positive scalar curvature the space of minimal surfaces having a uniform upper bound on the Morse index is always finite unless the manifold itself contains an embedded minimal RP^2. In particular, we derive a generic finiteness result whenever N does not contain a copy of RP^3 in its prime decomposition. We discuss the obstructions to any further generalization of such a result. When the metric g is required to be (scalar positive and) strongly bumpy (meaning that all closed, immersed minimal surfaces do not ha…
For any closed Riemannian three-manifold, we prove that for any sequence of closed embedded minimal surfaces with uniformly bounded index, the genus can only grow at most linearly with respect to the area.
We prove a compactness result for minimal hypersurfaces with bounded index and volume, which can be thought of as an extension of the compactness theorem of Choi-Schoen (Invent. Math. 1985) to higher dimensions.
We prove a version of the strong half-space theorem between the classes of recurrent minimal surfaces and complete minimal surfaces with bounded curvature of $\mathbb{R}^{3}_{\raisepunct{.}}$ We also show that any minimal hypersurface immersed with bounded curvature in $M\times \R_+$ equals some $M\times \{s\}$ provided $M$ is a complete, recurrent $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with $\text{Ric}_M \geq 0$ and whose sectional curvatures are bounded from above. For $H$-surfaces we prove that a stochastically complete surface $M$ can not be in the mean convex side of a $H$-surface $N$ embedd…
We prove a structural theorem that provides a precise local picture of how a sequence of closed embedded minimal hypersurfaces with uniformly bounded index (and volume if the ambient dimension is greater than three) in a Riemannian manifold of dimension at most seven, can degenerate. Loosely speaking, our results show that embedded minimal hypersurfaces with bounded index behave qualitatively like embedded stable minimal hypersurfaces, up to controlled errors. Several compactness/finiteness theorems follows our local picture.
For any $Λ>0$, let $\mathcal{M}_{n,Λ}$ denote the space containing all locally Lipschitz minimal graphs of dimension $n$ and of arbitrary codimension $m$ in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+m}$ with uniformly bounded 2-dilation $Λ$ of their graphic functions. In this paper, we show that this is a natural class to extend structural results known for codimension one. In particular, we prove that any tangent cone $C$ of $M\in\mathcal{M}_{n,Λ}$ at infinity has multiplicity one. This enables us to get a Neumann-Poincar$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$ inequality on stationary indecomposable components of $C$. A c…
Let (M,g) be a non-compact and complete Riemannian manifold with minimal horospheres and infinite injectivity radius. We prove that bounded functions on (M,g) satisfying the mean-value property are constant. We extend thus a result of A. Ranjan and H. Shah who proved a similar result for bounded harmonic functions on harmonic manifolds with minimal horospheres.
We show that immersed minimal surfaces of $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ with bounded curvature and proper self intersections are proper. We also show that the restriction of the immersing map to a wide component is always proper. When the immersing map is injective the whole surface is a wide component. Prior to these results it was only known that injectively immersed minimal surfaces with bounded curvature were proper.
We investigate complete minimal hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $% \ {R}^{4}$, with Gauss-Kronecker curvature identically zero. We prove that, if $f:M^{3}\to {R}^{4}$ is a complete minimal hypersurface with Gauss-Kronecker curvature identically zero, nowhere vanishing second fundamental form and scalar curvature bounded from below, then $f(M^{3})$ splits as a Euclidean product $L^{2}\times {R}$, where $L^{2}$ is a complete minimal surface in $ {R}^{3}$ with Gaussian curvature bounded from below.
We give a uniform and elementary treatment of many classical and new triply periodic minimal surfaces in Euclidean space, based on a Schwarz-Christoffel formula for periodic polygons in the plane. Our surfaces share the property that vertical symmetry planes cut them into simply connected pieces.
We prove, under a certain boundedness condition at infinity on the $(\bar{X}^{\top}, \bar{X}^{\bot})$-component of the second fundamental form, the vanishing of the essential spectrum of a complete minimal $\bar{X}$-bounded and $\bar{X}$-properly immersed submanifold on a Riemannian manifold endowed with a strongly convex vector field $\bar{X}$. The same conclusion also holds for any complete minimal $h$-bounded and $h$-properly immersed submanifold that lies in a open set of a Riemannian manifold $\oM$ supporting a nonnegative strictly convex function $h$. This extends a recent result of Bess…
Let $(M^{n+1},g,e^{-f}dμ)$ be a complete smooth metric measure space with $2\leq n\leq 6$ and Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant. We prove a smooth compactness theorem for the space of complete embedded $f$-minimal hypersurfaces in $M$ with uniform upper bounds on $f$-index and weighted volume. As a corollary, we obtain a smooth compactness theorem for the space of embedded self-shrinkers in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with $2\leq n\leq 6$. We also prove some estimates on the $f$-index of $f$-minimal hypersurfaces, and give a conformal structure of $f$-minimal surface with…
A 7-dimensional area-minimizing embedded hypersurface $M$ will in general have a discrete singular set. The same is true if $M$ is stable, or has bounded index, provided $H^6(sing M) = 0$. We show that if $M_i$ are a sequence of such minimal hypersurfaces which are minimizing, stable, or have bounded index, then $M_i$ can limit to a singular $M$ with only very controlled geometry, topology, and singular set. We show one can always "parameterize" a subsequence $i'$ with controlled bi-Lipschitz maps $ϕ_{i'}$ taking $ϕ_{i'}(M_{1'}) = M_{i'}$. As a consequence, we prove the space of smooth, closed…
We prove qualitative estimates on the total curvature of closed minimal hypersurfaces in closed Riemannian manifolds in terms of their index and area, restricting to the case where the hypersurface has dimension less than seven. In particular, we prove that if we are given a sequence of closed minimal hypersurfaces of bounded area and index, the total curvature along the sequence is quantised in terms of the total curvature of some limit surface, plus a sum of total curvatures of complete properly embedded minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean space - all of which are finite. Thus, we obtain qual…
We give two characterizations of varieties whose universal cover is a bounded symmetric domain without ball factors in terms of the existence of a holomorphic endomorphism \s of the tensor product T\otimes T' of the tangent bundle T with the cotangent bundle T'. To such a curvature type tensor \s one associates the first Mok characteristic cone S, obtained by projecting on T the intersection of ker (\s) with the space of rank 1 tensors. The simpler characterization requires that the projective scheme associated to S be a finite union of projective varieties of given dimensions and codimensions…
We relate the positivity of the curvature term in the Weitzenbock formula for the Laplacian on p-forms on a complete manifold to the existence of bounded and $L^2$ harmonic forms. In the case where the manifold is the universal cover of a compact manifold, we obtain topological and geometric information about the compact manifold. For example, we show that a compact manifold cannot admit one metric with pinched negative curvature and another metric with positive Weitzenbock term on two-forms. Many of these results can be thought of as differential form analogues of Myers' theorem. We also give…
We show that a properly immersed minimal hypersurface in M x R_+ equals some M x {c} when M is a complete, recurrent n-dimensional Riemannian manifold with bounded curvature. If on the other hand, M has nonnegative Ricci curvature with curvature bounded below, the same result holds for any positive entire minimal graph over M.
We prove that the supremum of principal curvatures of a minimal embedded disc in hyperbolic three-space spanning a quasicircle in the boundary at infinity is estimated in a sublinear way by the norm of the quasicircle in the sense of universal Teichmüller space, if the quasicircle is sufficiently close to being the boundary of a totally geodesic plane. As a by-product we prove that there is a universal constant C independent of the genus such that if the Teichmüller distance between the ends of a quasi-Fuchsian manifold $M$ is at most C, then $M$ is almost-Fuchsian. The main ingredients of the…
We show that if a closed manifold M admits an F-structure (possibly of rank 0) then its minimal entropy vanishes. In particular, this is the case if M admits a non-trivial circle action. As a corollary we obtain that the simplicial volume of a colsed manifold admitting an F-structure is zero. We also show that if M admits an F-structure then it collapses with curvature bounded from below. This is turn implies that M collapses with bounded scalar curvature or, equivalently, its Yamabe invariant is non-negative. We show that F-structures of rank zero appear rather frequently:every compact comple…
We study the minimal surface equation in the Heisenberg space, Nil_3. A geometric proof of non existence of minimal graphs over non convex, bounded and unbounded domains is achieved (our proof holds in the Euclidean space as well). We solve the Dirichlet problem for the minimal surface equation over bounded and unbounded convex domains, taking bounded, piecewise continuous boundary value. We are able to construct a Scherk type minimal surface and we use it as a barrier to construct non trivial minimal graphs over a wedge of angle between π/2 ,and πtaking non negative continuous boundary data, …
