We discuss the structure of positive definite kernels in terms of operator models. In particular, we introduce two models, one of Hessenberg type and another one that we call near triangular. These models produce parametrizations of the kernels and we describe the combinatorial nature of these parametrizations in terms of lattice paths of Dyck and Lukasiewicz type.
Convolution is an important tool in the construction of positive definite kernels on a manifold. This contribution provides conditions on an $L^2$-positive definite and zonal kernel on the unit sphere of $\mathbb{C}^q$ in order that the kernel can be recovered as a generalized convolution root of an equally positive definite and zonal kernel.
We present a necessary and sufficient condition for the strict positive definiteness of a real, continuous, isotropic and positive definite kernel on a two-point compact homogeneous space. The characterization adds to others previously obtained by D. Chen at all (2003) in the case in which the space is a sphere of dimension at least 2 and Menegatto at all (2006) in the case in which the space is the unit circle. As an application, we use the characterization to improve upon a recent result on the differentiability of positive definite kernels on the spaces.
In this note we refine the notion of conditionally negative definite kernels to the notion of conditionally strictly negative definite kernels and study its properties. We show that the class of these kernels carries some surprising rigidity, in particular, the word metric function on Coxeter groups is conditionally strictly negative definite if and only if the group is a free product of a number of copies of $\mathbb{Z}_2$'s and that the class of conditionally strictly negative definite kernels on a finite set is a one-parameter perturbation of the class of strictly positive definite kernels …
Hilbert-Schmidt independence criterion and distance covariance are methods to describe independence of random variables using either the Kronecker product of positive definite kernels or the Kronecker product of conditionally negative definite kernels. In this paper we generalize both methods by providing an independence criteria using a new concept, of positive definite independent kernels. We provide a characterization of the radial kernels that are positive definite independent on all Euclidean spaces and we present several examples.
We investigate the notion of conditionally positive definite in the context of Hilbert $C^*$-modules and present a characterization of the conditionally positive definiteness in terms of the usual positive definiteness. We give a Kolmogorov type representation of conditionally positive definite kernels in Hilbert $C^*$-modules. As a consequence, we show that a $C^*$-metric space $(S, d)$ is $C^*$-isometric to a subset of a Hilbert $C^*$-module if and only if $K(s,t)=-d(s,t)^2$ is a conditionally positive definite kernel. We also present a characterization of the order $K'\leq K$ between condit…
We study classes of reproducing kernels $K$ on general domains; these are kernels which arise commonly in machine learning models; models based on certain families of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. They are the positive definite kernels $K$ with the property that there are countable discrete sample-subsets $S$; i.e., proper subsets $S$ having the property that every function in $\mathscr{H}\left(K\right)$ admits an $S$-sample representation. We give a characterizations of kernels which admit such non-trivial countable discrete sample-sets. A number of applications and concrete kernels are …
We consider a kernel based harmonic analysis of "boundary," and boundary representations. Our setting is general: certain classes of positive definite kernels. Our theorems extend (and are motivated by) results and notions from classical harmonic analysis on the disk. Our positive definite kernels include those defined on infinite discrete sets, for example sets of vertices in electrical networks, or discrete sets which arise from sampling operations performed on positive definite kernels in a continuous setting. Below we give a summary of main conclusions in the paper: Starting with a given p…
It is shown that a positive (bounded linear) operator on a Hilbert space with trivial kernel is unitarily equivalent to a Hankel operator that satisfies double positivity condition if and only if it is non-invertible and has simple spectrum (that is, if this operator admits a cyclic vector). More generally, for an arbitrary positive (bounded linear) operator A on a Hilbert space H with trivial kernel the collection V(A) of all linear isometries V from H into H such that AV is positive as well is investigated. In particular, operators A such that V(A) contains a pure isometry with a given defic…
We introduce a method to construct general multivariate positive definite kernels on a nonempty set $X$ that employs a prescribed bounded completely monotone function and special multivariate functions on $X$.\ The method is consistent with a generalized version of Aitken's integral formula for Gaussians.\ In the case where $X$ is a cartesian product, the method produces nonseparable positive definite kernels that may be useful in multivariate interpolation.\ In addition, it can be interpreted as an abstract multivariate generalization of the well-established Gneiting's model for constructing …
We present a characterization for a positive definite operator valued kernel to be universal or $C_{0}$-universal, and apply these characterizations to a family of operator valued kernels that are shown to be well behaved. Later, we obtain a characterization for an operator valued differentiable kernel to be $C^{q}$-universal and $C_{0}^{q}$-universal. In order to obtain such characterization and examples we generalize some well known results concerning the structure of differentiable kernels to the operator valued context. On the examples is given an emphasis on the radial kernels on Euclidea…
We give two new global and algorithmic constructions of the reproducing kernel Hilbert space associated to a positive definite kernel. We further present ageneral positive definite kernel setting using bilinear forms, and we provide new examples. Our results cover the case of measurable positive definite kernels, and we give applications to both stochastic analysisand metric geometry and provide a number of examples.
We study the positive-definiteness of a family of $L^2(\mathbf{R})$ integral operators with kernel $K_{t, a}(x, y) = (1 + (x - y)^2 + a(x^2 + y^2)^t)^{-1}$, with $t > 0$ and $a > 0$. When $0 < t \le 1$, the known theory of positive-definite kernels ensures that the operator is positive-definite; when $t > 1$, constructions disprove positive-definiteness for many $(t, a)$-pairs.
We study representations of positive definite kernels $K$ in a general setting, but with view to applications to harmonic analysis, to metric geometry, and to realizations of certain stochastic processes. Our initial results are stated for the most general given positive definite kernel, but are then subsequently specialized to the above mentioned applications. Given a positive definite kernel $K$ on $S\times S$ where $S$ is a fixed set, we first study families of factorizations of $K$. By a factorization (or representation) we mean a probability space $\left(B,μ\right)$ and an associated stoc…
With view to applications in stochastic analysis and geometry, we introduce a new correspondence for positive definite kernels (p.d.) $K$ and their associated reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. With this we establish two kinds of factorizations: (i) Probabilistic: Starting with a positive definite kernel $K$ we analyze associated Gaussian processes $V$. Properties of the Gaussian processes will be derived from certain factorizations of $K$, arising as a covariance kernel of $V$. (ii) Geometric analysis: We discuss families of measure spaces arising as boundaries for $K$. Our results entail an …
This work is motivated by the frequent occurrence of boundary value problems with various boundary conditions in the modeling of some problems in engineering and physical science. Here we propose a new technique to force the positive definite kernels such as some radial basis functions to satisfy the boundary conditions exactly. It can improve the applications of existing methods based on positive definite kernels and radial basis functions especially the pseudospectral radial basis function method for handling the differential equations with more complicated boundary conditions. The proposed …
We establish a duality for two factorization questions, one for general positive definite (p.d) kernels $K$, and the other for Gaussian processes, say $V$. The latter notion, for Gaussian processes is stated via Ito-integration. Our approach to factorization for p.d. kernels is intuitively motivated by matrix factorizations, but in infinite dimensions, subtle measure theoretic issues must be addressed. Consider a given p.d. kernel $K$, presented as a covariance kernel for a Gaussian process $V$. We then give an explicit duality for these two seemingly different notions of factorization, for p.…
We give a new proof of a classical result which provides a one-to-one correspondence between positive definite radial kernels on a homogeneous tree and finite Borel measures on the interval $[-1,1]$. Our methods allow us to find a new characterisation in terms of positive trace-class operators on $\ell_2$. Furthermore, we extend both characterisations to finite products of homogeneous trees. The proof relies on a formula for the norm of radial Schur multipliers, in the spirit of Haagerup--Steenstrup--Szwarc, and a variation of the Hamburger moment problem.
The aim of the paper is to give a full characterization of functions f from I into the real line R (where I is an interval in R that satisfies certain natural conditions) such that for any I-valued positive definite kernel K defined on an arbitrary set X the kernel formed by composing f with K is positive definite as well.
Given a fixed sigma-finite measure space $\left(X,\mathscr{B},ν\right)$, we shall study an associated family of positive definite kernels $K$. Their factorizations will be studied with view to their role as covariance kernels of a variety of stochastic processes. In the interesting cases, the given measure $ν$ is infinite, but sigma-finite. We introduce such positive definite kernels $K\left(\cdot,\cdot\right)$ with the two variables from the subset of the sigma-algebra $\mathscr{B}$, sets having finite $ν$ measure. Our setting and results are motivated by applications. The latter are covered …
The aim of this paper is to present a unified framework in the setting of Hilbert $C^*$-modules for the scalar- and vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces and $C^*$-valued reproducing kernel spaces. We investigate conditionally negative definite kernels with values in the $C^*$-algebra of adjointable operators acting on a Hilbert $C^*$-module. In addition, we show that there exists a two-sided connection between positive definite kernels and reproducing kernel Hilbert $C^*$-modules. Furthermore, we explore some conditions under which a function is in the reproducing kernel module and …

The main purpose of our paper is a new approach to design of algorithms of Kaczmarz type in the framework of operators in Hilbert space. Our applications include a diverse list of optimization problems, new Karhunen-Loève transforms, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for digital images. A key feature of our algorithms is our use of recursive systems of projection operators. Specifically, we apply our recursive projection algorithms for new computations of PCA probabilities and of variance data. For this we also make use of specific reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, factorization for kern…
A certain kernel (sometimes called the Pick kernel) associated to Schur functions on the disk is always positive semi-definite. A generalization of this fact is well-known for Schur functions on the polydisk. In this article, we show that the Pick kernel on the polydisk has a great deal of structure beyond being positive semi-definite. It can always be split into two kernels possessing certain shift invariance properties.
In this paper, we specify what functions induce the bounded composition operators on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) associated with an analytic positive definite function defined on $\mathbf{R}^d$. We prove that only affine transforms can do so in a pretty large class of RKHS. Our result covers not only the Paley-Wiener space on the real line, studied in previous works, but also much more general RKHSs corresponding to analytic positive definite functions where existing methods do not work. Our method only relies on an intrinsic properties of the RKHSs, and we establish a connection…
We study functions f : (a,b) ---> R on open intervals in R with respect to various kinds of positive and negative definiteness conditions. We say that f is positive definite if the kernel f((x + y)/2) is positive definite. We call f negative definite if, for every h > 0, the function e^{-hf} is positive definite. Our first main result is a Lévy--Khintchine formula (an integral representation) for negative definite functions on arbitrary intervals. For (a,b) = (0,\infty) it generalizes classical results by Bernstein and Horn. On a symmetric interval (-a,a), we call f reflection positive if it i…

We explore the connection between Hilbertian metrics and positive definite kernels on the real line. In particular, we look at a well-known characterization of translation invariant Hilbertian metrics on the real line by von Neumann and Schoenberg (1941). Using this result we are able to give an alternate proof of Bochner's theorem for translation invariant positive definite kernels on the real line (Rudin, 1962).
We consider the class $Ψ_d$ of continuous functions $ψ\colon [0,π] \to \mathbb{R}$, with $ψ(0)=1$ such that the associated isotropic kernel $C(ξ,η)= ψ(θ(ξ,η))$ ---with $ξ,η\in \mathbb{S}^d$ and $θ$ the geodesic distance--- is positive definite on the product of two $d$-dimensional spheres $\mathbb{S}^d$. We face Problems 1 and 3 proposed in the essay Gneiting (2013b). We have considered an extension that encompasses the solution of Problem 1 solved in Fiedler (2013), regarding the expression of the $d$-Schoenberg coefficients of members of $Ψ_d$ as combinations of $1$-Schoenberg coefficients. …
Starting with the correspondence between positive definite kernels on the one hand and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHSs) on the other, we turn to a detailed analysis of associated measures and Gaussian processes. Point of departure: Every positive definite kernel is also the covariance kernel of a Gaussian process. Given a fixed sigma-finite measure $μ$, we consider positive definite kernels defined on the subset of the sigma algebra having finite $μ$ measure. We show that then the corresponding Hilbert factorizations consist of signed measures, finitely additive, but not automatically…
We present new classes of positive definite kernels on non-standard spaces that are integrally strictly positive definite or characteristic. In particular, we discuss radial kernels on separable Hilbert spaces, and introduce broad classes of kernels on Banach spaces and on metric spaces of strong negative type. The general results are used to give explicit classes of kernels on separable $L^p$ spaces and on sets of measures.
An abstract Pick interpolation theorem for a family of positive semi-definite kernels on a set $X$ is formulated. The result complements those in \cite{Ag} and \cite{AMbook} and will subsequently be applied to Pick interpolation on distinguished varieties \cite{JKM}.
A class of negative definite kernels is defined in terms of measure spaces. Using this concept, property (T) for a countable group $\G$ is characterized in terms of measure preserving actions of $\G$, as follows. If a set $S$ is translated a finite amount by any fixed element of $\G$, then there is a uniform bound on how far $S$ is translated.
In a general context of positive definite kernels $k$, we develop tools and algorithms for sampling in reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathscr{H}$ (RKHS). With reference to these RKHSs, our results allow inference from samples; more precisely, reconstruction of an "entire" (or global) signal, a function $f$ from $\mathscr{H}$, via generalized interpolation of $f$ from partial information obtained from carefully chosen distributions of sample points. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for configurations of point-masses $δ_{x}$ of sample-points $x$ to have finite norm relative to the…
We show that total multiplicities of negative and positive spectra of a self-adjoint Hankel operator $H$ with kernel $h(t)$ and of an operator of multiplication by some real function $s(x)$ coincide. In particular, $\pm H\geq 0$ if and only if $\pm s(x)\geq 0$. The kernel $h(t)$ and its "sign-function" $s(x)$ are related by an explicit formula. An expression of $h(t)$ in terms of $s(x)$ leads to an exponential representation of $h(t)$. Our approach directly applies to various classes of Hankel operators. In particular, for Hankel operators of finite rank, we find an explicit formula for the to…
With view to applications, we establish a correspondence between two problems: (i) the problem of finding continuous positive definite extensions of functions $F$ which are defined on open bounded domains $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}$, on the one hand; and (ii) spectral theory for elliptic differential operators acting on $Ω$, (constant coefficients.) A novelty in our approach is the use of a reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathscr{H}_{F}$ computed directly from $\left(Ω,F\right)$, as well as algorithms for computing relevant orthonormal bases in $\mathscr{H}_{F}$.
Let $(X,μ)$ be a strictly-positive Borel measure space. We show that the modes of convergence in a reproducing kernel Hilbert (RKHS) space, pointwise, weak and strong are all equivalents. From this we describe some important consequences such as an association with positive operators and positive definite kernels and a compact embedding condition for a RKHS in $L^{2}(X,μ)$.
It has been recently shown that if $K$ is a sesqui-analytic scalar valued non-negative definite kernel on a domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb C^m$, then the function $\big(K^2\partial_i\bar{\partial}_j\log K\big )_{i,j=1}^ m,$ is also a non-negative definite kernel on $Ω$. In this paper, we discuss two consequences of this result. The first one strengthens the curvature inequality for operators in the Cowen-Douglas class $B_1(Ω)$ while the second one gives a relationship of the reproducing kernel of a submodule of certain Hilbert modules with the curvature of the associated quotient module.
We show that, for positive definite kernels, if specific forms of regularity (continuity, Sn-differentiability or holomorphy) hold locally on the diagonal, then they must hold globally on the whole domain of positive-definiteness. This local-to-global propagation of regularity is constructively shown to be a consequence of the algebraic structure induced by the non-negativity of the associated bilinear forms up to order 5. Consequences of these results for topological groups and for positive definite and exponentially convex functions are explored.
This work presents a parametrized family of distances, namely the Alpha Procrustes distances, on the set of symmetric, positive definite (SPD) matrices. The Alpha Procrustes distances provide a unified formulation encompassing both the Bures-Wasserstein and Log-Euclidean distances between SPD matrices. We show that the Alpha Procrustes distances are the Riemannian distances corresponding to a family of Riemannian metrics on the manifold of SPD matrices, which encompass both the Log-Euclidean and Wasserstein Riemannian metrics. This formulation is then generalized to the set of positive definit…
The geometry of spaces with indefinite inner product, known also as Krein spaces, is a basic tool for developing Operator Theory therein. In the present paper we establish a link between this geometry and the algebraic theory of *-semigroups. It goes via the positive definite functions and related to them reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. Our concern is in describing properties of elements of the semigroup which determine shift operators which serve as Pontryagin fundamental symmetries
We give explicit transforms for Hilbert spaces associated with positive definite functions on $\mathbb{R}$, and positive definite tempered distributions, incl., generalizations to non-abelian locally compact groups. Applications to the theory of extensions of p.d. functions/distributions are included. We obtain explicit representation formulas for positive definite tempered distributions in the sense of L. Schwartz, and we give applications to Dirac combs and to diffraction. As further applications, we give parallels between Bochner's theorem (for continuous p.d. functions) on the one hand, an…
