We prove an almost sure invariance principle that is valid for general classes of nonuniformly expanding and nonuniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems. Discrete time systems and flows are covered by this result. In particular, the result applies to the planar periodic Lorentz flow with finite horizon. Statistical limit laws such as the central limit theorem, the law of the iterated logarithm, and their functional versions, are immediate consequences.
Let $T \colon M \to M$ be a nonuniformly expanding dynamical system, such as logistic or intermittent map. Let $v \colon M \to \mathbb{R}^d$ be an observable and $v_n = \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} v \circ T^k$ denote the Birkhoff sums. Given a probability measure $μ$ on $M$, we consider $v_n$ as a discrete time random process on the probability space $(M, μ)$. In smooth ergodic theory there are various natural choices of $μ$, such as the Lebesgue measure, or the absolutely continuous $T$-invariant measure. They give rise to different random processes. We investigate relation between such processes. We sh…
We provide a systematic approach for deducing statistical limit laws via martingale-coboundary decomposition, for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems with slowly contracting and expanding directions. In particular, if the associated return time function is square-integrable, then we obtain the central limit theorem, the weak invariance principle, and an iterated version of the weak invariance principle.
We prove the almost sure invariance principle with rate $o(n^{\varepsilon})$ for every $\varepsilon > 0$ for Hölder continuous observables on nonuniformly expanding and nonuniformly hyperbolic transformations with exponential tails. Examples include Gibbs-Markov maps with big images, Axiom A diffeomorphisms, dispersing billiards and a class of logistic and Hénon maps. The best previously proved rate is $O(n^{1/4} (\log n)^{1/2} (\log \log n)^{1/4})$. As a part of our method, we show that nonuniformly expanding transformations are factors of Markov shifts with simple structure and natural metri…
We consider weak invariance principles (functional limit theorems) in the domain of a stable law. A general result is obtained on lifting such limit laws from an induced dynamical system to the original system. An important class of examples covered by our result are Pomeau-Manneville intermittency maps, where convergence for the induced system is in the standard Skorohod J_1 topology. For the full system, convergence in the J_1 topology fails, but we prove convergence in the M_1 topology.
For a large class of quickly mixing dynamical systems, we prove that the error in the almost sure approximation with a Brownian motion is of order O((log n)^a) with a $\ge$ 2. Specifically, we consider nonuniformly expanding maps with exponential and stretched exponential decay of correlations, with one-dimensional H{ö}lder continuous observables.
In this paper, we consider the convergence rate with respect to Wasserstein distance in the invariance principle for deterministic nonuniformly hyperbolic systems, where both discrete time systems and flows are included. Our results apply to uniformly hyperbolic systems and large classes of nonuniformly hyperbolic systems including intermittent maps, Viana maps, finite horizon planar periodic Lorentz gases and others. Furthermore, as a nontrivial application to homogenization problem, we investigate the $\mathcal{W}_2$-convergence rate of a fast-slow discrete deterministic system to a stochast…
We prove an almost sure invariance principle (approximation by d-dimensional Brownian motion) for vector-valued Holder observables of large classes of nonuniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems. These systems include Axiom~A diffeomorphisms and flows as well as systems modelled by Young towers with moderate tail decay rates. In particular, the position variable of the planar periodic Lorentz gas with finite horizon approximates a 2-dimensional Brownian motion.
We prove a fiberwise almost sure invariance principle for random piecewise expanding transformations in one and higher dimensions using recent developments on martingale techniques.

We prove vector-valued almost sure invariance principle (VASIP) for nonstationary dynamical systems, under assumptions of correlation decay and variance growth. Applications include VASIP for non-stationary (non)uniformly expanding dynamical systems, quenched VASIP for random dynamical systems. In particular, VASIP is satisfied for corresponding stationary dynamical systems.
We establish almost sure invariance principles, a strong form of approximation by Brownian motion, for non-stationary time-series arising as observations on dynamical systems. Our examples include observations on sequential expanding maps, perturbed dynamical systems, non-stationary sequences of functions on hyperbolic systems as well as applications to the shrinking target problem in expanding systems.
We establish almost sure invariance principles (ASIP), a strong form of approximation by Brownian motion, for non-stationary time series arising as observations on sequential maps possessing an indifferent fixed point. These transformations are obtained by perturbing the slope in the Pomeau-Manneville map. Quenched ASIP for random compositions of these maps is also obtained.
We obtain the first results on convergence rates in the Prokhorov metric for the weak invariance principle (functional central limit theorem) for deterministic dynamical systems. Our results hold for uniformly expanding/hyperbolic (Axiom A) systems, as well as nonuniformly expanding/hyperbolic systems such as dispersing billiards, Henon-like attractors, Viana maps and intermittent maps. As an application, we obtain convergence rates for deterministic homogenization in multiscale systems.
We investigate a wide class of two-dimensional hyperbolic systems with singularities, and prove the almost sure invariance principle (ASIP) for the random process generated by sequences of dynamically Hölder observables. The observables could be unbounded, and the process may be non-stationary and need not have linearly growing variances. Our results apply to Anosov diffeomorphisms, Sinai dispersing billiards and their perturbations. The random processes under consideration are related to the fluctuation of Lyapunov exponents, the shrinking target problem, etc.
In this paper we deal with a large class of dynamical systems having a version of the spectral gap property. Our primary class of systems comes from random dynamics, but we also deal with the deterministic case. We show that if a random dynamical system has a fiberwise spectral gap property as well as an exponential decay of correlations in the base, then, developing on Gouëzel's approach, the system satisfies the almost sure invariance principle. The result is then applied to uniformly expanding random systems like those studied by Denker and Gordin and Mayer, Skorulski, and Urbański.
We prove the one-dimensional almost sure invariance principle with essentially optimal rates for slowly (polynomially) mixing deterministic dynamical systems, such as Pomeau-Manneville intermittent maps, with Hölder continuous observables. Our rates have form $o(n^γL(n))$, where $L(n)$ is a slowly varying function and $γ$ is determined by the speed of mixing. We strongly improve previous results where the best available rates did not exceed $O(n^{1/4})$. To break the $O(n^{1/4})$ barrier, we represent the dynamics as a Young-tower-like Markov chain and adapt the methods of Berkes-Liu-Wu and Cu…
The theorem of Shannon-McMillan-Breiman states that for every generating partition on an ergodic system of finite entropy the exponential decay rate of the measure of cylinder sets equals the metric entropy almost everywhere. In addition the measure of $n$-cylinders is in various settings known to be lognormally distributed in the limit. In this paper the logarithm of the measure of $n$-cylinder, the information function, satisfies the almost sure invariance principle in the case in which the measure is $β$-mixing. We get a similar result for the recurrence time. Previous results are due to Ph…
We prove a quenched almost sure invariance principle for certain classes of random distance expanding dynamical systems which do not necessarily exhibit uniform decay of correlations.
We prove the almost sure invariance principle for stationary R^d--valued processes (with dimension-independent very precise error terms), solely under a strong assumption on the characteristic functions of these processes. This assumption is easy to check for large classes of dynamical systems or Markov chains, using strong or weak spectral perturbation arguments.
We extend the spectral approach of S. Gouëzel for the vector-valued almost sure invariance principle (ASIP) to certain classes of non-stationary sequences with a weaker control over the behavior of the covariance matrices, assuming only linear growth. Then we apply this extension to obtain a quenched vector-valued ASIP for random perturbations of a fixed Anosov diffeomorphism as well as random perturbations of a billiard map associated to the periodic Lorentz gas. We also consider certain classes of random piecewise expanding maps.
We prove almost sure invariance principle, a strong form of approximation by Brownian motion, for non-autonomous holomorphic dynamical systems on complex projective space $\Bbb{P}^k$ for Hölder continuous and DSH observables.
We obtain a quenched vector-valued almost sure invariance principle (ASIP) for random expanding on average cocycles. This is achieved by combining the adapted version of Gouëzel's approach for establishing ASIP and the recent construction of the so-called adapted norms, which in some sense eliminate the non-uniformity of the decay of correlations. For real-valued observables, we also show that the martingale approximation technique is applicable in our setup, and that it yields the ASIP with better error rates. Finally, we present an example showing the necessity of a scaling condition, answer…
We consider two classes of piecewise expanding maps $T$ of $[0,1]$: a class of uniformly expanding maps for which the Perron-Frobenius operator has a spectral gap in the space of bounded variation functions, and a class of expanding maps with a neutral fixed point at zero. In both cases, we give a large class of unbounded functions $f$ for which the partial sums of $f\circ T^i$ satisfy an almost sure invariance principle. This class contains piecewise monotonic functions (with a finite number of branches) such that: - For uniformly expanding maps, they are square integrable with respect to the…
Let $f$ be an holomorphic endomorphism of $\mathbb{P}^k$ and $μ$ be its measure of maximal entropy. We prove an Almost Sure Invariance Principle for the systems $(\mathbb{P}^k,f,μ)$. Our class $\cal{U}$ of observables includes the Hölder functions and unbounded ones which present analytic singularities. The proof is based on a geometric construction of a Bernoulli coding map $ω: (Σ, s, ν) \to (\mathbb{P}^k,f,μ)$. We obtain the invariance principle for an observable $ψ$ on $(\mathbb{P}^k,f,μ)$ by applying Philipp-Stout's theorem for $χ= ψ\circ ω$ on $(Σ, s, ν)$. The invariance principle implies…
We prove a vector-valued almost sure invariance principle for some classes of time dependent non-uniformly distance expanding dynamical systems. The models we have in mind are certain sequential versions of the smooth non-uniformly distance expanding maps considered in \cite{castro} and \cite{Vara}, as well as certain types of sequences of covering maps. Our results rely on the theory of complex projective metrics which was developed in \cite{Rug}, together with the spectral methods of Gouëzel \cite{GO}. A big advantage in applying the theory of complex cones here is that it also yields additi…
Understanding the statistical properties of the aperiodic planar Lorentz gas stands as a grand challenge in the theory of dynamical systems. Here we study a greatly simplified but related model, proposed by Arvind Ayyer and popularized by Joel Lebowitz, in which a scatterer configuration on the torus is randomly updated between collisions. Taking advantage of recent progress in the theory of time-dependent billiards on the one hand and in probability theory on the other, we prove a vector-valued almost sure invariance principle for the model. Notably, the configuration sequence can be weakly d…
In this paper we show how to apply classical probabilistic tools for partial sums $\sum_{j=0}^{n-1}φ\circτ^j$ generated by a skew product $τ$, built over a sufficiently well mixing base map and a random expanding dynamical system. Under certain regularity assumptions on the observable $φ$, we obtain a central limit theorem (CLT) with rates, a functional CLT, an almost sure invariance principle (ASIP), a moderate deviations principle, several exponential concentration inequalities and Rosenthal type moment estimates for skew products with $α, ϕ$ or $ψ$ mixing base maps and expanding on the aver…
We give general conditions for the central limit theorem and weak convergence to Brownian motion (the weak invariance principle / functional central limit theorem) to hold for observables of compact group extensions of nonuniformly expanding maps. In particular, our results include situations where the central limit theorem would fail, and anomalous behaviour would prevail, if the compact group were not present. This has important consequences for systems with noncompact Euclidean symmetry and provides the rigorous proof for a conjecture made in our paper: A Huygens principle for diffusion and…
In this paper, we present two almost sure global well-posedness (GWP) results for the energy supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) on the unit ball of $\Bbb R^3$ using two different approaches. First, for the NLS with algebraic nonlinearities with the subcritical initial data, we show the almost sure global well-posedness and the invariance of the underlying measures, and establish controls on the growth of Sobolev norms of the solutions. This global result is based on a deterministic local theory and a probabilistic globalization. Second, for the NLS with generic power nonlinear…
We obtain quenched almost sure invariance principle (with convergence rate) for Random Young Tower. We apply our result to i.i.d perturbations of non-uniformly expanding maps. In particular, we answer one open question in \cite{BBM}.
We prove a log average almost-sure invariance principle (log asip) for renewal processes with positive i.i.d. gaps in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law with $0<α<1$. Dynamically, this means that renewal and Mittag-Leffler paths are forward asymptotic in the scaling flow, up to a time average. This strengthens the almost-sure invariance principle in log density we proved in {FisherTalet2011}. The scaling flow is a Bernoulli flow on a probability space. We study a second flow, the increment flow, transverse to the scaling flow, which preserves an infinite invariant measure constructe…
We show that for almost every map in a transversal one-parameter family of piecewise expanding unimodal maps the Birkhoff sum of suitable observables along the forward orbit of the turning point satisfies the law of iterated logarithm. This result will follow from an almost sure invariance principle for the Birkhoff sum, as a function on the parameter space. Furthermore, we obtain a similar result for general one-parameter families of piecewise expanding maps on the interval.
We answer the question of Aaronson about the relative complexity of Random Walks in Random Sceneries driven by either aperiodic two dimensional random walks, two-dimensional Simple Random walk, or by aperiodic random walks in the domain of attraction of the Cauchy distribution. A key step is proving that the range of the random walk satisfies the Fölner property almost surely.
We start by reviewing recent probabilistic results on ergodic sums in a large class of (non-uniformly) hyperbolic dynamical systems. Namely, we describe the central limit theorem, the almost-sure convergence to the gaussian and other stable laws, and large deviations. Next, we describe a new branch in the study of probabilistic properties of dynamical systems, namely concentration inequalities. They allow to describe the fluctuations of very general observables and to get bounds rather than limit laws. We end up with two sections: one gathering various open problems, notably on random dynamica…
In this paper, we investigate annealed and quenched limit theorems for random expanding dynamical systems. Making use of functional analytic techniques and more probabilistic arguments with martingales, we prove annealed versions of a central limit theorem, a large deviation principle, a local limit theorem, and an almost sure invariance principle. We also discuss the quenched central limit theorem, dynamical Borel-Cantelli lemmas, Erdös-Rényi laws and concentration inequalities.
We consider a large class of piecewise expanding maps T of [0,1] with a neutral fixed point, and their associated Markov chain Y_i whose transition kernel is the Perron-Frobenius operator of T with respect to the absolutely continuous invariant probability measure. We give a large class of unbounded functions f for which the partial sums of f\circ T^i satisfy both a central limit theorem and a bounded law of the iterated logarithm. For the same class, we prove that the partial sums of f(Y_i) satisfy a strong invariance principle. When the class is larger, so that the partial sums of f\circ T^i…
Following recent work of Chernov, Markarian, and Zhang, it is known that the billiard map for dispersing billiards with zero angle cusps has slow decay of correlations with rate 1/n. Since the collisions inside a cusp occur in quick succession, it is reasonable to expect a much faster decay rate in continuous time. In this paper we prove that the flow is rapid mixing: correlations decay faster than any polynomial rate. A consequence is that the flow admits strong statistical properties such as the almost sure invariance principle, even though the billiard map does not. The techniques in this p…
In this paper we obtain an almost sure invariance principle for convergent sequences of either Anosov diffeomorphisms or expanding maps on compact Riemannian manifolds and prove an ergodic stability result for such sequences. The sequences of maps need not correspond to typical points of a random dynamical system. The methods in the proof rely on the stability of compositions of hyperbolic dynamical systems. We introduce the notion of sequential conjugacies and prove that these vary in a Lipschitz way with respect to the generating sequences of dynamical systems. As a consequence, we prove sta…
We consider a partially hyperbolic set $K$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$ whose tangent space splits as $T_K M=E^{cu}\oplus E^{s}$, for which the centre-unstable direction $E^{cu}$ expands non-uniformly on some local unstable disk. We show that under these assumptions $f$ induces a Gibbs-Markov structure. Moreover, the decay of the return time function can be controlled in terms of the time typical points need to achieve some uniform expanding behavior in the centre-unstable direction. As an application of the main result we obtain certain rates for decay of correlations, large deviations, an al…
We prove that every geometric Lorenz attractor has superpolynomial decay of correlations with respect to the unique SRB measure. Moreover, we prove the Central Limit Theorem and Almost Sure Invariance Principle for the time-1 map of the flow of geometric Lorenz attractors. In particular, our results apply to the classical Lorenz attractor.
