Let G be a compact connected Lie group, and (M,ω) a Hamiltonian G-space with proper moment map μ. We give a surjectivity result which expresses the K-theory of the symplectic quotient M//G in terms of the equivariant K-theory of the original manifold M, under certain technical conditions on μ. This result is a natural K-theoretic analogue of the Kirwan surjectivity theorem in symplectic geometry. The main technical tool is the K-theoretic Atiyah-Bott lemma, which plays a fundamental role in the symplectic geometry of Hamiltonian G-spaces. We discuss this lemma in detail and highlight the differences between the K-theory and rational cohomology versions of this lemma.
We also introduce a K-theoretic version of equivariant formality and prove that when the fundamental group of G is torsion-free, every compact Hamiltonian G-space is equivariantly formal. Under these conditions, the forgetful map K_{G}^{*}(M) \to K^{*}(M) is surjective, and thus every complex vector bundle admits a stable equivariant structure. Furthermore, by considering complex line bundles, we show that every integral cohomology class in H^{2}(M;\Z) admits an equivariant extension in H_{G}^{2}(M;\Z).
Let G be a compact Lie group and LG its associated loop group. The main result of this manuscript is a surjectivity theorem from the equivariant K-theory of a Hamiltonian LG-space onto the integral K-theory of its Hamiltonian LG-quotient. Our result is a K-theoretic analogue of previous work in rational Borel-equivariant cohomology of Bott, Tolman, and Weitsman. Our proof techniques differ from that of Bott, Tolman, and Weitsman in that they explicitly use the Borel construction, which we do not have at our disposal in equivariant K-theory; we instead directly construct G-equivariant homotopy …
Consider the holomorphic Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group $K$ on a compact Kähler manifold $M$ with a moment map $Φ: M\rightarrow \mathfrak{k}^*$. Assume that $0$ is a regular value of the moment map. Weitsman raised the question of what we can say about the cohomology of the Kähler quotient $M_0:=Φ^{-1}(0)/K$ if all the ordinary cohomology of $M$ is of type $(p, p)$. In this paper, using the Cartan-Chern-Weil theory we show that in the above context there is a natural surjective Kirwan map from an equivariant version of the Dolbeault cohomology of $M$ onto the Dolbeault cohomology of…
This paper uses Morse-theoretic techniques to compute the equivariant Betti numbers of the space of semistable rank two degree zero Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface, a method in the spirit of Atiyah and Bott's original approach for semistable holomorphic bundles. This leads to a natural proof that the hyperkähler Kirwan map is surjective for the non-fixed determinant case.
Consider the Hamiltonian action of a torus on a compact twisted generalized complex manifold $M$. We first observe that Kirwan injectivity and surjectivity hold for ordinary equivariant cohomology in this setting. Then we prove that these two results hold for the twisted equivariant cohomology as well.
Let $T$ be a compact torus and $(M,ω)$ a Hamiltonian $T$-space. We give a new proof of the $K$-theoretic analogue of the Kirwan surjectivity theorem in symplectic geometry by using the equivariant version of the Kirwan map introduced in one of R. Goldin's papers. We compute the kernel of this equivariant Kirwan map, and hence give a computation of the kernel of the Kirwan map. As an application, we find the presentation of the kernel of the Kirwan map for the $T$-equivariant $K$-theory of flag varieties $G/T$ where $G$ is a compact, connected and simply-connected Lie group. In the last section…
Let $M$ be a compact, connected symplectic manifold with a Hamiltonian action of a compact $n$-dimensional torus $T$. Suppose that $M$ is equipped with an anti-symplectic involution $σ$ compatible with the $T$-action. The real locus of $M$ is the fixed point set $M^σ$ of $σ$. Duistermaat introduced real loci, and extended several theorems of symplectic geometry to real loci. In this paper, we extend another classical result of symplectic geometry to real loci: the Kirwan surjectivity theorem. In addition, we compute the kernel of the real Kirwan map. These results are direct consequences of te…
A polynomial assignment for a continuous action of a compact torus $T$ on a topological space $X$ assigns to each $p\in X$ a polynomial function on the Lie algebra of the isotropy group at $p$ in such a way that a certain compatibility condition is satisfied. The space ${\mathcal{A}}_T(X)$ of all polynomial assignments has a natural structure of an algebra over the polynomial ring of ${\rm Lie}(T)$. It is an equivariant homotopy invariant, canonically related to the equivariant cohomology algebra. In this paper we prove various properties of ${\mathcal{A}}_T(X)$ such as Borel localization, a C…
We study the Morse theory of the Yang-Mills-Higgs functional on the space of pairs $(A,Φ)$, where $A$ is a unitary connection on a rank 2 hermitian vector bundle over a compact Riemann surface, and $Φ$ is a holomorphic section of $(E, d_A")$. We prove that a certain explicitly defined substratification of the Morse stratification is perfect in the sense of $\G$-equivariant cohomology, where $\G$ denotes the unitary gauge group. As a consequence, Kirwan surjectivity holds for pairs. It also follows that the twist embedding into higher degree induces a surjection on equivariant cohomology. This …
We develop notions of twisted spinor bundle and twisted pre-quantum bundle on quasi-Hamiltonian G-spaces. The main result of this paper is that we construct a Dirac operator with index given by positive energy representation of loop group. This generalizes the quantization of Hamiltonian $G$-spaces to quasi-Hamiltonian G-spaces.
We study the poset of Hamiltonian tori for polygon spaces. We determine some maximal elements and give examples where maximal Hamiltonian tori are not all of the same dimension.
Consider a $2n$-dimensional symplectic vector space $E$ over an arbitrary field $\mathbb{F}$. Given a contraction map $f: \wedge^n E \rightarrow \wedge^{n-2} E$ such that the Lagrangian--Grassmannian $L(n,2n)=G(n,2n)\cap{\mathbb P}(\ker f)$, where $\wedge^r E$ denotes the $r$-th exterior power of $E$ and ${\mathbb P}(\ker f)$ is the projectivization of $\ker f$. In this paper, for a symplectic vector space $E$ of dimension $n=6$, we prove that the surjectivity of the contraction map $f:\wedge^{6} E \rightarrow \wedge^{4} E$ depends on the characteristic of the base field and we calculate the c…
In their 2007 paper, Jarvis, Kaufmann, and Kimura defined the full orbifold $K$-theory of an orbifold ${\mathfrak X}$, analogous to the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology of ${\mathfrak X}$ in that it uses the obstruction bundle as a quantum correction to the multiplicative structure. We give an explicit algorithm for the computation of this orbifold invariant in the case when ${\mathfrak X}$ arises as an abelian symplectic quotient. Our methods are integral $K$-theoretic analogues of those used in the orbifold cohomology case by Goldin, Holm, and Knutson in 2005. We rely on the $K$-theoretic Kirwa…
This paper develops the pre-quantization of Lie group-valued moment maps, and establishes its equivalence with the pre-quantization of infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian loop group spaces.
We prove a formula for twisted Duistermaat-Heckman distributions associated to a Hamiltonian $LG$-space. The terms of the formula are localized at the critical points of the norm-square of the moment map, and can be computed in cross-sections. Our main tools are the theory of quasi-Hamiltonian $G$-spaces, as well as the Hamiltonian cobordism approach to norm-square localization introduced recently by Harada and Karshon.
We discuss BFV deformation quantization of singular symplectic quotient spaces in the special case of linear Hamiltonian torus actions. In particular, we show that the Koszul complex on the moment map of an effective linear Hamiltonian torus action is acyclic. We rephrase the nonpositivity condition of Arms, Gotay and Jennings for linear Hamiltonian torus actions. It follows that reduced spaces of such actions admit continuous star products.
We study the prequantization of quasi-presymplectic groupoids and their Hamiltonian spaces using $S^1$-gerbes. We give a geometric description of the integrality condition. As an application, we study the prequantization of the quasi-Hamiltonian $G$-spaces of Alekseev--Malkin--Meinrenken.
Let K be a simple and simply connected compact Lie group. We call a (twisted) quasi-Hamiltonian K-manifold M a quasi-Hamiltonian model space if it is multiplicity free and its momentum map is surjective. We explicitly identify the subgroups of the Lie algebra of the maximal torus of K, which, by F. Knop's classification of multiplicity free quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds, are in one-to-one correspondence with the isomorphism classes of quasi-Hamiltonian model K-spaces.
