We investigate the close connection between metastability of the reversible diffusion process X defined by the stochastic differential equation dX_t=-\nabla F(X_t) dt+\sqrt2εdW_t,\qquad ε>0, and the spectrum near zero of its generator -L_ε\equiv εΔ-\nabla F\cdot\nabla, where F:R^d\to R and W denotes Brownian motion on R^d. For generic F to each local minimum of F there corresponds a metastable state. We prove that the distribution of its rescaled relaxation time converges to the exponential distribution as ε\downarrow 0 with optimal and uniform error estimates. Each metastable state can be viewed as an eigenstate of L_ε with eigenvalue which converges to zero exponentially fast in 1/ε. Modulo errors of exponentially small order in 1/εthis eigenvalue is given as the inverse of the expected metastable relaxation time. The eigenstate is highly concentrated in the basin of attraction of the corresponding trap.
This article considers a class of metastable non-reversible diffusion processes whose invariant measure is a Gibbs measure associated with a Morse potential. In a companion paper [32], we proved the Eyring-Kramers formula for the corresponding class of metastable diffusion processes. In this article, we further develop this result by proving that a suitably time-rescaled metastable diffusion process converges to a Markov chain on the deepest metastable valleys. This article is also an extension of [45], which considered the same problem for metastable reversible diffusion processes. Our proof …
In this article, we perform quantitative analyses of metastable behavior of an interacting particle system known as the inclusion process. For inclusion processes, it is widely believed that the system nucleates the condensation of particles because of the attractive nature of the interaction mechanism. The metastable behavior of the inclusion processes corresponds to the movement of the condensate on a suitable time scale, and the computation of the corresponding time scale and the characterization of the scaling limit of the condensate motion are the main problems in the study of metastabili…
In this article, we prove the Eyring-Kramers formula for non-reversible metastable diffusion processes that have a Gibbs invariant measure. Our result indicates that non-reversible processes exhibit faster metastable transitions between neighborhoods of local minima, compared to the reversible process considered in [Bovier, Eckhoff, Gayrard, and Klein, J. Eur. Math. Soc. 6: 399-424, 2004]. Therefore, by adding non-reversibility to the model, we can indeed accelerate the metastable transition. Our proof is based on the potential theoretic approach to metastability through accurate estimation of…
We present two variational formulae for the capacity in the context of non-selfadjoint elliptic operators. The minimizers of these variational problems are expressed as solutions of boundary-value elliptic equations. We use these principles to provide a sharp estimate for the transition times between two different wells for non-reversible diffusion processes. This estimate permits to describe the metastable behavior of the system.
We prove the metastable behavior of reversible Markov processes on finite state spaces under minimal conditions on the jump rates. To illustrate the result we deduce the metastable behavior of the Ising model with a small magnetic field at very low temperature.
We study a large class of reversible Markov chains with discrete state space and transition matrix $P_N$. We define the notion of a set of {\it metastable points} as a subset of the state space $\G_N$ such that (i) this set is reached from any point $x\in \G_N$ without return to x with probability at least $b_N$, while (ii) for any two point x,y in the metastable set, the probability $T^{-1}_{x,y}$ to reach y from x without return to x is smaller than $a_N^{-1}\ll b_N$. Under some additional non-degeneracy assumption, we show that in such a situation: \item{(i)} To each metastable point corres…
We study the condensation regime of the finite reversible inclusion process, i.e., the inclusion process on a finite graph $S$ with an underlying random walk that admits a reversible measure. We assume that the random walk kernel is irreducible and its reversible measure takes maximum value on a subset of vertices $S_\star\subset S$. We consider initial conditions corresponding to a single condensate that is localized on one of those vertices and study the metastable (or tunneling) dynamics. We find that, if the random walk restricted to $S_\star$ is irreducible, then there exists a single tim…
Consider a sequence of continuous-time Markov chains $(X^{(n)}_t:t\ge 0)$ evolving on a fixed finite state space $V$. Let $I_n$ be the level two large deviations rate functional for $X^{(n)}_t$, as $t\to\infty$. Under a hypothesis on the jump rates, we prove that $I_n$ can be written as $I_n = I^{(0)} \,+\, \sum_{1\le p\le q} (1/θ^{(p)}_n) \, I^{(p)}$ for some rate functionals $I^{(p)}$. The weights $θ^{(p)}_n$ correspond to the time-scales at which the sequence of Markov chains $X^{(n)}_t$ exhibit a metastable behavior, and the zero level sets of the rate functionals $I^{(p)}$ identify the me…
We consider non-reversible random walks evolving on a potential field in a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^d$. We describe the complete metastable behavior of the random walk among the landscape of valleys, and we derive the Eyring-Kramers formula for the mean transition time from a metastable set to a stable set.
Random sampling of large Markov matrices with a tunable spectral gap, a nonuniform stationary distribution, and a nondegenerate limiting empirical spectral distribution (ESD) is useful. Fix $c>0$ and $p>0$. Let $A_n$ be the adjacency matrix of a random graph following $\mathrm{G}(n, p/n)$, known as the Erdős-Rényi distribution. Add $c/n$ to each entry of $A_n$ and then normalize its rows. It is shown that the resulting Markov matrix has the desired properties. Its ESD weakly converges in probability to a symmetric nondegenerate distribution, and its extremal eigenvalues, other than 1, fall in …
We propose a new definition of metastability of Markov processes on countable state spaces. We obtain sufficient conditions for a sequence of processes to be metastable. In the reversible case these conditions are expressed in terms of the capacity and of the stationary measure of the metastable states.
This paper originally showed a lower bound on mixing time for a non-reversible Markov chain in terms of its largest non-trivial eigenvalue, and used this to re-derive some generalizations of results of Fan Chung. However, the paper has been withdrawn because I have been made aware that the lower bound was previously known.
We consider a simple but important class of metastable discrete time Markov chains, which we call perturbed Markov chains. Basically, we assume that the transition matrices depend on a parameter $\varepsilon$, and converge as $\varepsilon$. We further assume that the chain is irreducible for $\varepsilon$ but may have several essential communicating classes when $\varepsilon$. This leads to metastable behavior, possibly on multiple time scales. For each of the relevant time scales, we derive two effective chains. The first one describes the (possibly irreversible) metastable dynamics, while th…
In this work, we analyse the metastability of non-reversible diffusion processes $$dX_t=\boldsymbol{b}(X_t)dt+\sqrt h\,dB_t$$ on a bounded domain $Ω$ when $\mathbf{b}$ admits the decomposition $\mathbf{b}=-(\nabla f+\mathbf{\ell})$ and $\nabla f \cdot \mathbf{\ell}=0$. In this setting, we first show that, when $h\to 0$, the principal eigenvalue of the generator of $(X_t)_{t\ge 0}$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary $\partialΩ$ of $Ω$ is exponentially close to the inverse of the mean exit time from $Ω$, uniformly in the initial conditions $X_0=x$ within the compacts of $Ω$. The …
We study metastability and mixing time for a non-reversible probabilistic cellular automaton. With a suitable choice of the parameters, we first show that the stationary distribution is close in total variation to a low temperature Ising model. Then we prove that both the mixing time and the time to exit a metastable state grow polynomially in the size of the system, while this growth is exponential in reversible dynamics. In this model, non-reversibility, parallel updatings and a suitable choice of boundary conditions combine to produce an efficient dynamical stability.
We consider small perturbations of a dynamical system on the one-dimensional torus. We derive sharp estimates for the pre-factor of the stationary state, we examine the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the pre-factor, we compute the capacities between disjoint sets, and we prove the metastable behavior of the process among the deepest wells following the martingale approach. We also present a bound for the probability that a Markov process hits a set before some fixed time in terms of the capacity of an enlarged process.
We study the spectrum of the semiclassical Witten Laplacian $Δ_{f}$ associated to a smooth function $f$ on ${\mathbb R}^d$. We assume that $f$ is a confining Morse--Bott function. Under this assumption we show that $Δ_{f}$ admits exponentially small eigenvalues separated from the rest of the spectrum. Moreover, we establish Eyring-Kramers formula for these eigenvalues. Our approach is based on microlocal constructions of quasimodes near the critical submanifolds.
Suppose X and Y are two independent irreducible Markov chains on n states. We consider the intersection time, which is the first time their trajectories intersect. We show for reversible and lazy chains that the total variation mixing time is always upper bounded by the expected intersection time taken over the worst starting states. For random walks on trees we show the two quantities are equivalent. We obtain an expression for the expected intersection time in terms of the eigenvalues for reversible and transitive chains. For such chains we also show that it is up to constants the geometric …
We prove an upper bound on the total variation mixing time of a finite Markov chain in terms of the absolute spectral gap and the number of elements in the state space. Unlike results requiring reversibility or irreducibility, this bound is finite whenever the chain converges. The dependence on the number of elements means that the new bound cannot capture the behavior of rapidly mixing chains; but an example shows that such dependence is necessary. We also provide a sharpened result for reversible chains that are not necessarily irreducible. The proof of the general bound exploits a connectio…
Motivated by the study of the metastable stochastic Ising model at subcritical temperature and in the limit of a vanishing magnetic field, we extend the notion of ($κ$, $λ$)-capacities between sets, as well as the associated notion of soft-measures, to the case of overlapping sets. We recover their essential properties, sometimes in a stronger form or in a simpler way, relying on weaker hypotheses. These properties allow to write the main quantities associated with reversible metastable dynamics, e.g. asymptotic transition and relaxation times, in terms of objects that are associated with two-…
We proposed in \cite{bl2} a new approach to prove the metastable behavior of reversible dynamics based on potential theory and local ergodicity. In this article we extend this theory to nonreversible dynamics based on the Dirichlet principle proved in \cite{gl2}.
In this paper we consider a finite state time discrete Markov chain that mimics the behaviour of solutions of the stochastic differential equation $dX=-U'(X)dt+εdL$, where $U$ is a multi-well potential with $n\geq 2$ local minima and L is a symmetric α-stable Lévy process (Lévy flights process). We investigate the spectrum of the generator of this Markov chain in the limit $ε\to 0$ and localize the top n eigenvalues $λ^ε_1,\dots, λ^ε_n$. These eigenvalues turn out to be of the same algebraic order $O(ε^α)$ and are well separated from the rest of the spectrum by a spectral gap. We also determin…
On the Kemeny time for continuous-time reversible and irreversible Markov processes with applications to stochastic resetting and to conditioning towards forever-survival
Let $(X_t)$ be a discrete time Markov chain on a general state space. It is well-known that if $(X_t)$ is aperiodic and satisfies a drift and minorization condition, then it converges to its stationary distribution $π$ at an exponential rate. We consider the problem of computing upper bounds for the distance from stationarity in terms of the drift and minorization data. Baxendale showed that these bounds improve significantly if one assumes that $(X_t)$ is reversible with nonnegative eigenvalues (i.e. its transition kernel is a self-adjoint operator on $L^2(π)$ with spectrum contained in $[0,1…
We consider the problem of metastability for stochastic reversible dynamics with exponentially small transition probabilities. We generalize previous results in several directions. We give an estimate of the spectral gap of the transition matrix and of the mixing time of the associated dynamics in terms of the maximal stability level. These model-independent results hold in particular for a large class of Probabilistic Cellular Automata (PCA), which we then focus on. We consider the PCA in a finite volume, at small and fixed magnetic field, and in the limit of vanishing temperature. This model…
We study stability of the eigenvalues of the generator of a one dimensional reversible diffusion process satisfying some natural conditions. The proof is based on Stein's method. In particular, these results are applied to the Normal distribution (via the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process), to Gamma distributions (via the Laguerre process) and to Beta distributions (via Jacobi process).
The second largest eigenvalue of a transition matrix $P$ has connections with many properties of the underlying Markov chain, and especially its convergence rate towards the stationary distribution. In this paper, we give an asymptotic upper bound for the second eigenvalue when $P$ is the transition matrix of the simple random walk over a random directed graph with given degree sequence. This is the first result concerning the asymptotic behavior of the spectral gap for sparse non-reversible Markov chains with an unknown stationary distribution. An immediate consequence of our result is a proo…
In this paper, we are concerned with long-time behavior of Euler-Maruyama schemes associated with a range of regime-switching diffusion processes. The key contributions of this paper lie in that existence and uniqueness of numerical invariant measures are addressed (i) for regime-switching diffusion processes with finite state spaces by the Perron-Frobenius theorem if the "averaging condition" holds, and, for the case of reversible Markov chain, via the principal eigenvalue approach provided that the principal eigenvalue is positive; (ii) for regime-switching diffusion processes with countable…
In this contribution, we extend the methodology proposed in Abry and Didier (2017) to obtain the first joint estimator of the real parts of the Hurst eigenvalues of $n$-variate OFBM. The procedure consists of a wavelet regression on the log-eigenvalues of the sample wavelet spectrum. The estimator is shown to be consistent for any time reversible OFBM and, under stronger assumptions, also asymptotically normal starting from either continuous or discrete time measurements. Simulation studies establish the finite sample effectiveness of the methodology and illustrate its benefits compared to uni…
We show bounds on total variation and $L^{\infty}$ mixing times, spectral gap and magnitudes of the complex valued eigenvalues of a general (non-reversible non-lazy) Markov chain with a minor expansion property. This leads to the first known bounds for the non-lazy simple and max-degree walks on a (directed) graph, and even in the lazy case they are the first bounds of the optimal order. In particular, it is found that within a factor of two or four, the worst case of each of these mixing time and eigenvalue quantities is a walk on a cycle with clockwise drift.
We consider stochastic networks with pairwise transition rates of the exponential form where the temperature T is a small parameter. Such networks arise in physics and chemistry and serve as mathematically tractable models of complex systems. Typically, such networks contain large numbers of states and widely varying pairwise transition rates. We present a methodology for spectral analysis and clustering of such networks that takes advance of the small parameter T and consists of two steps: (1) computing zero-temperature asymptotics for eigenvalues and the collection of quasi-invariant sets, a…
This article examines large time behaviour of finite state mean-field interacting particle systems. Our first main result is a sharp estimate (in the exponential scale) on the time required for convergence of the empirical measure process of the $N$-particle system to its invariant measure; we show that when time is of the order of $\exp\{NΛ\}$ for a suitable constant $Λ\geq 0$, the process has mixed well and it is close to its invariant measure. We then obtain large-$N$ asymptotics of the second largest eigenvalue of the generator associated with the empirical measure process when it is rever…

We prove an Eyring-Kramers law for the small eigenvalues and mean first-passage times of a metastable Markovian jump process which is invariant under a group of symmetries. Our results show that the usual Eyring-Kramers law for asymmetric processes has to be corrected by a factor computable in terms of stabilisers of group orbits. Furthermore, the symmetry can produce additional Arrhenius exponents and modify the spectral gap. The results are based on representation theory of finite groups.
