The second largest eigenvalue of a transition matrix $P$ has connections with many properties of the underlying Markov chain, and especially its convergence rate towards the stationary distribution. In this paper, we give an asymptotic upper bound for the second eigenvalue when $P$ is the transition matrix of the simple random walk over a random directed graph with given degree sequence. This is the first result concerning the asymptotic behavior of the spectral gap for sparse non-reversible Markov chains with an unknown stationary distribution. An immediate consequence of our result is a proof of the Alon conjecture for directed regular graphs. Our result is based on a variation of the trace method introduced by Bordenave (2015).
We consider the generalised PageRank walk on a digraph $G$, with refresh probability $α$ and resampling distribution $λ$. We analyse convergence to stationarity when $G$ is a large sparse random digraph with given degree sequences, in the limit of vanishing $α$. We identify three scenarios: when $α$ is much smaller than the inverse of the mixing time of $G$ the relaxation to equilibrium is dominated by the simple random walk and displays a cutoff behaviour; when $α$ is much larger than the inverse of the mixing time of $G$ on the contrary one has pure exponential decay with rate $α$; when $α$ …
We prove that the reverse characteristic polynomial $\det(I_n - zA_n)$ of a random $n \times n$ matrix $A_n$ with iid $\mathrm{Bernoulli}(d/n)$ entries converges in distribution towards the random infinite product $\prod_{\ell = 1}^\infty(1-z^\ell)^{Y_\ell}$ where $Y_\ell$ are independent $\mathrm{Poisson}(d^\ell/\ell)$ random variables. We show that this random function is a Poisson analog of more classical Gaussian objects such as the Gaussian holomorphic chaos. As a byproduct, we obtain new simple proofs of previous results on the asymptotic behaviour of extremal eigenvalues of sparse Erdős…
We prove the first eigenvalue repulsion bound for sparse random matrices. As a consequence, we show that these matrices have simple spectrum, improving the range of sparsity and error probability from the work of the second author and Vu. As an application of our tail bounds, we show that for sparse Erdős--Rényi graphs, weak and strong nodal domains are the same, answering a question of Dekel, Lee, and Linial.
We study the task of clustering in directed networks. We show that using the eigenvalue/eigenvector decomposition of the adjacency matrix is simpler than all common methods which are based on a combination of data regularization and SVD truncation, and works well down to the very sparse regime where the edge density has constant order. Our analysis is based on a Master Theorem describing sharp asymptotics for isolated eigenvalues/eigenvectors of sparse, non-symmetric matrices with independent entries. We also describe the limiting distribution of the entries of these eigenvectors; in the task …

Random directed graphs $D(n,p)$ undergo a phase transition around the point $p = 1/n$, and the width of the transition window has been known since the works of Luczak and Seierstad. They have established that as $n \to \infty$ when $p = (1 + μn^{-1/3})/n$, the asymptotic probability that the strongly connected components of a random directed graph are only cycles and single vertices decreases from 1 to 0 as $μ$ goes from $-\infty$ to $\infty$. By using techniques from analytic combinatorics, we establish the exact limiting value of this probability as a function of $μ$ and provide more propert…
We consider the adjacency operator $A$ of the Linial-Meshulam model $X(d,n,p)$ for random $d-$dimensional simplicial complexes on $n$ vertices, where each $d-$cell is added independently with probability $p\in[0,1]$ to the complete $(d-1)$-skeleton. We consider sparse random matrices $H$, which are generalizations of the centered and normalized adjacency matrix $\mathcal{A}:=(np(1-p))^{-1/2}\cdot(A-\mathbb{E}\left[A\right])$, obtained by replacing the Bernoulli$(p)$ random variables used to construct $A$ with arbitrary bounded distribution $Z$. We obtain bounds on the expected Schatten norm of…
We study a variant of the sparse PCA (principal component analysis) problem in the "hard" regime, where the inference task is possible yet no polynomial-time algorithm is known to exist. Prior work, based on the low-degree likelihood ratio, has conjectured a precise expression for the best possible (sub-exponential) runtime throughout the hard regime. Following instead a statistical physics inspired point of view, we show bounds on the depth of free energy wells for various Gibbs measures naturally associated to the problem. These free energy wells imply hitting time lower bounds that corrobor…
