Under a complex technical condition, similar to such used in extreme value theory, we find the rate q(ε)^{-1} at which a stochastic process with stationary increments ξshould be sampled, for the sampled process ξ(\lfloor\cdot /q(ε)\rfloor q(ε)) to deviate from ξby at most ε, with a given probability, asymptotically as ε\downarrow0. The canonical application is to discretization errors in computer simulation of stochastic processes.
We describe two classes of Gaussian self-similar random fields: with strictly stationary rectangular increments and with mild stationary rectangular increments. We find explicit spectral and moving average representations for the fields with strictly stationary rectangular increments and characterize fields with mild stationary rectangular increments by the properties of covariance functions of their Lamperti transformations as well as in terms of their spectral densities. We establish that both classes contain not only fractional Brownian sheets and we provide corresponding examples. As a by-…
Our purpose is to investigate properties for processes with stationary and independent increments under $G$-expectation. As applications, we prove the martingale characterization to $G$-Brownian motion and present a decomposition for generalized $G$-Brownian motion.
We consider anisotropic self-similar random fields, in particular, the fractional Brownian sheet. This Gaussian field is an extension of fractional Brownian motion. We prove some properties of covariance function for self-similar fields with rectangular increments. Using Lamperti transformation we obtain properties of covariance function for the corresponding stationary fields. We present an example of a Gaussian self-similar field with stationary rectangular increments that is not a fractional Brownian sheet.
Stationary stochastic processes with independent increments, of which the Poisson process is a prominent example, are widely used to describe real world events. With the basic assumption that a counting process is stationary and has independent increments, here I derive two integral equations to capture the time evolution of any such process. In order to solve these two integral equations explicitly, I need to introduce one more restriction condition. For sake of simplicity, I have imposed the Poisson condition on the two equations and successfully reproduced the renown Poisson results. The me…
Let $W_t$ be a standard Brownian motion. It is well-known that the Langevin equation $d U_t = -θU_td t + d W_t$ defines a stationary process called Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. Furthermore, Langevin equation can be used to construct other stationary processes by replacing Brownian motion $W_t$ with some other process $G$ with stationary increments. In this article we prove that the converse also holds and all continuous stationary processes arise from a Langevin equation with certain noise $G=G_θ$. Discrete analogies of our results are given and applications are discussed.
We extend the notion of the associated random walk and the Wald martingale in random walks where the increments are independent and identically distributed to the more general case of stationary ergodic increments. Examples are given where the increments are Markovian or Gaussian, and an application in queueing is considered.
A new family of stable processes indexed by metric spaces with stationary increments are introduced. They are special cases of a new family of set-indexed stable processes with Chentsov representation. At the heart of the representation, a result on the so-called measure definite kernels is of independent interest. A limit theorem for set-indexed processes is also established.
This paper studies the problem of equivalence of Gaussian measures induced by Gaussian random fields (GRFs) with stationary increments and proves a sufficient condition for the equivalence in terms of the behavior of the spectral measures at infinity. The main results extend those of Stein (2004), Van Zanten (2007, 2008) and are applicable to a rich family of nonstationary space-time models with possible anisotropy behavior.
We study a class of self-similar processes with stationary increments belonging to higher order Wiener chaoses which are similar to Hermite processes. We obtain an almost sure wavelet-like expansion of these processes. This allows us to compute the pointwise and local Hölder regularity of sample paths and to analyse their behaviour at infinity. We also provide some results on the Hausdorff dimension of the range and graphs of multidimensional anisotropic self-similar processes with stationary increments defined by multiple Wiener integrals.
Mixed moving average processes appear in the ergodic decomposition of stationary symmetric α-stable (SαS) processes. They correspond to the dissipative part of "deterministic" flows generating SαS processes (Rosinski, 1995). Along these lines we study stationary increment and self-similar SαS processes. Since the classes of stationary increment and self-similar processes can be embedded into the class of stationary processes by the Masani and Lamperti transformations, respectively, we characterize these classes of SαS processes in terms of nonsingular flows and the related cocycles. We illustr…
We characterize the finite variation property for stationary increment mixed moving averages driven by infinitely divisible random measures. Such processes include fractional and moving average processes driven by Levy processes, and also their mixtures. We establish two types of zero-one laws for the finite variation property. We also consider some examples to illustrate our results.
We study the Langevin equation with stationary-increment Gaussian noise. We show the strong consistency and the asymptotic normality with Berry--Esseen bound of the so-called alternative estimator of the mean reversion parameter. The conditions and results are stated in terms of the variance function of the noise. We consider both the case of continuous and discrete observations. As examples we consider fractional and bifractional Ornstein--Uhlenbeck processes. Finally, we discuss the maximum likelihood and the least squares estimators.
Given a Gaussian stationary increment processes with spectral density, we show that a Wick-Ito integral with respect to this process can be naturally obtained using Hida's white noise space theory. We use the Bochner-Minlos theorem to associate a probability space to the process, and define the counterpart of the S-transform in this space. We then use this transform to define the stochastic integral and prove an associated Ito formula.
In this paper we obtain new limit theorems for variational functionals of high frequency observations of stationary increments Lévy driven moving averages. We will see that the asymptotic behaviour of such functionals heavily depends on the kernel, the driving Lévy process and the properties of the functional under consideration. We show the "law of large numbers" for our class of statistics, which consists of three different cases. For one of the appearing limits, which we refer to as the ergodic type limit, we also prove the associated weak limit theory, which again consists of three differe…
In this paper we study the self-similar processes with stationary increments in a discrete-time setting. Different from the continuous-time case, it is shown that the scaling function of such a process may not take the form of a power function $b(a)=a^H$. More precisely, its scaling function can belong to one of three types, among which one type is degenerate, one type has a continuous-time counterpart, while the other type is new and unique for the discrete-time setting. We then focus on this last type of processes, construct two classes of examples, and prove a special spectral representatio…
The paper deals with the regression model $X_t = θt + B_t$, $t\in[0, T ]$, where $B=\{B_t, t\geq 0\}$ is a centered Gaussian process with stationary increments. We study the estimation of the unknown parameter $θ$ and establish the formula for the likelihood function in terms of a solution to an integral equation. Then we find the maximum likelihood estimator and prove its strong consistency. The results obtained generalize the known results for fractional and mixed fractional Brownian motion.
We derive a functional limit theorem for the partial maxima process based on a long memory stationary $α$-stable process. The length of memory in the stable process is parameterized by a certain ergodic-theoretical parameter in an integral representation of the process. The limiting process is no longer a classical extremal Fréchet process. It is a self-similar process with $α$-Fréchet marginals, and it has stationary max-increments, a property which we introduce in this paper. The functional limit theorem is established in the space $D[0,\infty)$ equipped with the Skorohod $M_1$-topology; in …
In this paper we study the local times of vector-valued Gaussian fields that are `diagonally operator-self-similar' and whose increments are stationary. Denoting the local time of such a Gaussian field around the spatial origin and over the temporal unit hypercube by $Z$, we show that there exists $λ\in(0,1)$ such that under some quite weak conditions, $\lim_{n\rightarrow +\infty}\frac{\sqrt[n]{\mathbb{E}(Z^n)}}{n^λ}$ and $\lim_{x\rightarrow +\infty}\frac{-\log \mathbb{P}(Z>x)}{x^{\frac{1}λ}}$ both exist and are strictly positive (possibly $+\infty$). Moreover, we show that if the underlying G…
We present a proof of the almost sure existence, uniqueness and coalescence of directed semi-infinite geodesics in planar growth models that is based on properties of an increment-stationary version of the growth process. The argument is developed in the context of the exponential corner growth model. It uses coupling, planar monotonicity, and properties of the stationary growth process to derive the existence of Busemann functions, which in turn control geodesics. This soft approach is in some situations an alternative to the much-applied 20-year-old arguments of C. Newman and co-authors. Alo…
We propose a method based on probabilistic arguments to study the convexity of the autocorrelation function of processes associated with a single server queue. To illustrate the power of the method we apply it in two cases: to the workload process seen by the customers of a GI/GI/1 queue, and to the workload process of a fluid queue fed by a general Lévy process.
The aim of this paper is to present a result of discrete approximation of some class of stable self-similar stationary increments processes. The properties of such processes were intensively investigated, but little is known on the context in which such processes can arise. To our knowledge, discretisation and convergence theorems are available only in the case of stable Lévy motions and fractional Brownian motions. This paper yields new results in this direction. Our main result is the convergence of the random rewards schema, which was firstly introduced by Cohen and Samorodnitsky, and that …
In this paper we consider the distribution of the location of the path supremum in a fixed interval for self-similar processes with stationary increments. To this end, a point process is constructed and its relation to the distribution of the location of the path supremum is studied. Using this framework, we show that the distribution has a spectral-type representation, in the sense that it is always a mixture of a special group of absolutely continuous distributions, plus point masses on the two boundaries. Bounds on the value and the derivatives of the density function are established. We fu…
For a given centered Gaussian process with stationary increments $\{X(t), t\geq 0\}$ and $c>0$, let $$ W_γ(t)=X(t)-ct-γ\inf_{0\leq s\leq t}\left(X(s)-cs\right), \quad t\geq 0$$ denote the $γ$-reflected process, where $γ\in (0,1)$. This process is introduced in the context of risk theory to model surplus process that include tax payments of loss-carry forward type.In this contribution we derive asymptotic approximations of both the ruin probability and the joint distribution of first and last passage times given that ruin occurs. We apply our findings to the cases with $X$ being the multiplex f…
In this paper we present some new limit theorems for power variations of stationary increment Lévy driven moving average processes. Recently, such asymptotic results have been investigated in [Ann. Probab. 45(6B) (2017), 4477--4528, Festschrift for Bernt Øksendal, Stochastics 81(1) (2017), 360--383] under the assumption that the kernel function potentially exhibits a singular behaviour at $0$. The aim of this work is to demonstrate how some of the results change when the kernel function has multiple singularity points. Our paper is also related to the article [Stoch. Process. Appl. 125(2) (201…
In this paper we present some new limit theorems for power variation of $k$th order increments of stationary increments Lévy driven moving averages. In this infill sampling setting, the asymptotic theory gives very surprising results, which (partially) have no counterpart in the theory of discrete moving averages. More specifically, we will show that the first order limit theorems and the mode of convergence strongly depend on the interplay between the given order of the increments, the considered power $p>0$, the Blumenthal-Getoor index $β\in (0,2)$ of the driving pure jump Lévy process $L$ a…
We show that $\mathbb{P} ( \ell_X(0,T] \leq 1)=(c_X+o(1))T^{-(1-H)}$, where $\ell_X$ is the local time measure at $0$ of any recurrent $H$-self-similar real-valued process $X$ with stationary increments that admits a sufficiently regular local time and $c_X$ is some constant depending only on $X$. A special case is the Gaussian setting, i.e. when the underlying process is fractional Brownian motion, in which our result settles a conjecture by Molchan [Commun. Math. Phys. 205, 97-111 (1999)] who obtained the upper bound $1-H$ on the decay exponent of $\mathbb{P} ( \ell_X(0,T] \leq 1)$. Our appr…
In this article we characterise discrete time stationary fields by difference equations involving stationary increment fields and self-similar fields. This gives connections between stationary fields, stationary increment fields and, through Lamperti transformation, self-similar fields. Our contribution is a natural generalisation of recently proved results covering the case of stationary processes.
Properties of arrival times are studied for a Cox process with independent (and stationary) increments. Under a reasonable setting the directing random measure is shown to take over independent (and stationary) increments of the process, from which the sets of arrival times and their numbers in disjoint intervals are proved to be independent (and stationary). Moreover, we derive the exact joint distribution of these quantities with Gamma random measure, whereas for a general random measure the method of calculation is presented. Based on the derived properties we consider prediction problems f…
We consider the problem of optimal estimation of the linear functional $A_Nξ=\sum_{k=0}^Na(k)ξ(k)$ depending on the unknown values of a stochastic sequence $ξ(m)$ with stationary increments from observations of the sequence $ξ(m)+η(m)$ at points of the set $\mathbb{Z}\setminus\{0,1,2,\ldots,N\}$, where $η(m)$ is a stationary sequence uncorrelated with $ξ(m)$. We propose formulas for calculating the mean square error and the spectral characteristic of the optimal linear estimate of the functional in the case of spectral certainty, where spectral densities of the sequences are exactly known. We …
In this paper we present some new limit theorems for power variation of $k$th order increments of stationary increments Lévy driven moving averages. In the infill asymptotic setting, where the sampling frequency converges to zero while the time span remains fixed, the asymptotic theory gives very surprising results, which (partially) have no counterpart in the theory of discrete moving averages. More specifically, we will show that the first order limit theorems and the mode of convergence strongly depend on the interplay between the given order of the increments, the considered power $p>0$, t…
This paper considers an approximation usually used when implementing Ramaswami's recursion for the stationary distribution of the M/G/1-type Markov chain. The approximation is called the level-increment-truncation approximation because it truncates level increment at a given threshold. The main contribution of this paper is to present a geometric convergence formula of the level-wise difference between the respective stationary distributions of the original M/G/1-type Markov chain and its LI truncation approximation under the assumption that the level-increment distribution is light-tailed.
This paper considers the level-increment (LI) truncation approximation of M/G/1-type Markov chains. The LI truncation approximation is useful for implementing the M/G/1 paradigm, which is the framework for computing the stationary distribution of M/G/1-type Markov chains. The main result of this paper is a subgeometric convergence formula for the total variation distance between the original stationary distribution and its LI truncation approximation. Suppose that the equilibrium level-increment distribution is subexponential, and that the downward transition matrix is rank one. We then show t…
We study the behavior of independent and stationary increments jump processes as they approach fixed thresholds. The exact crossing time is unavailable because the real-time information about successive jumps is unknown. Instead, the underlying process $A(t)$ is observed only upon a third-party independent point process ${τ_n}$. The observed time series ${A(τ_n)}$ presents crude, delayed data. The crossing is first observed upon one of the observations, denoted $τ_ν$. We develop and further explore a new technique to revive the real-time paths of $A(t)$ for all $t$ belonging to an interval bef…
Studying sample path behaviour of stochastic fields/processes is a classical research topic in probability theory and related areas such as fractal geometry. To this end, many methods have been developed since a long time in Gaussian frames. They often rely on some underlying "nice" Hilbertian structure, and can also require finiteness of moments of high order. Therefore, they can hardly be transposed to frames of heavy-tailed stable probability distributions. However, in the case of some linear non-anticipative moving average stable fields/processes, such as the linear fractional stable sheet…
In this paper we present some limit theorems for power variation of Lévy semi-stationary processes in the setting of infill asymptotics. Lévy semi-stationary processes, which are a one-dimensional analogue of ambit fields, are moving average type processes with a multiplicative random component, which is usually referred to as volatility or intermittency. From the mathematical point of view this work extends the asymptotic theory investigated in [14], where the authors derived the limit theory for $k$th order increments of stationary increments Lévy driven moving averages. The asymptotic resul…
We study the persistence probability for processes with stationary increments. Our results apply to a number of examples: sums of stationary correlated random variables whose scaling limit is fractional Brownian motion, random walks in random sceneries, random processes in Brownian scenery, and the Matheron-de Marsily model in Z^2 with random orientations of the horizontal layers. Using a new approach, strongly related to the study of the range, we obtain an upper bound of optimal order in the general case and improved lower bounds (compared to previous literature) for many processes.
We determine the variance-optimal hedge when the logarithm of the underlying price follows a process with stationary independent increments in discrete or continuous time. Although the general solution to this problem is known as backward recursion or backward stochastic differential equation, we show that for this class of processes the optimal endowment and strategy can be expressed more explicitly. The corresponding formulas involve the moment, respectively, cumulant generating function of the underlying process and a Laplace- or Fourier-type representation of the contingent claim. An examp…
The problem of optimal estimation of linear functionals constructed from the unobserved values of a stochastic sequence with periodically stationary increments based on observations of the sequence with stationary noise is considered. For sequences with known spectral densities, we obtain formulas for calculating values of the mean square errors and the spectral characteristics of the optimal estimates of the functionals. Formulas that determine the least favorable spectral densities and the minimax-robust spectral characteristics of the optimal linear estimates of functionals are proposed in …
We study stochastic sequences $ξ(k)$ with periodically stationary generalized multiple increments of fractional order which combines cyclostationary, multi-seasonal, integrated and fractionally integrated patterns. We solve the filtering problem for linear functionals constructed from unobserved values of a stochastic sequence $ξ(k)$ based on observations with the periodically stationary noise sequence. For sequences with known matrices of spectral densities, we obtain formulas for calculating values of the mean square errors and the spectral characteristics of the optimal estimates of the fun…
In this paper we study solutions to multivariate stochastic delay differential equations (MSDDEs) which have stationary increments, and we show that this modeling framework is in many ways similar to the discrete-time cointegrated VAR model. In particular, we observe that an MSDDE can always be written in an error correction form and, under suitable conditions, we argue that a process with stationary increments is a solution to the MSDDE if and only if it admits a certain Granger type representation. As a direct implication of these results we obtain a complete characterization of the set of c…
We introduce stochastic sequences $ζ(k)$ with periodically stationary generalized multiple increments of fractional order which combines cyclostationary, multi-seasonal, integrated and fractionally integrated patterns. We solve the problem of optimal estimation of linear functionals constructed from unobserved values of stochastic sequences $ζ(k)$ based on their observations at points $ k<0$. For sequences with known spectral densities, we obtain formulas for calculating values of the mean square errors and the spectral characteristics of the optimal estimates of functionals. Formulas that det…
A function $f=f_T$ is called least energy approximation to a function $B$ on the interval $[0,T]$ with penalty $Q$ if it solves the variational problem $$ \int_0^T \left[ f'(t)^2 + Q(f(t)-B(t)) \right] dt \searrow \min. $$ For quadratic penalty the least energy approximation can be found explicitly. If $B$ is a random process with stationary increments, then on large intervals $f_T$ also is close to a process of the same class and the relation between the corresponding spectral measures can be found. We show that in a long run (when $T\to \infty$) the expectation of energy of optimal approxima…
Orey suggested the definition of some index for Gaussian processes with stationary increments which determines various properties of the sample paths of this process. We give an extension of the definition of the Orey index for a second order stochastic processes which may not have stationary increments and estimate the Orey index for Gaussian process from discrete observations of its sample paths.
In this paper we present a general mathematical construction that allows us to define a parametric class of $H$-sssi stochastic processes (self-similar with stationary increments), which have marginal probability density function that evolves in time according to a partial integro-differential equation of fractional type. This construction is based on the theory of finite measures on functional spaces. Since the variance evolves in time as a power function, these $H$-sssi processes naturally provide models for slow and fast anomalous diffusion. Such a class includes, as particular cases, fract…
This paper develops a generalization of Brownian motion with stationary, autocorrelated increments as a tractable model for problems in business and finance. We show that any real continuous Gaussian Markov process with stationary increments and smooth covariance function is characterized by three parameters quantifying drift, volatility, and autocorrelations. We model a queue as a functional of a process defined by those characteristics and derive its transient distribution conditional on its history.
We study moderate deviations in the exponential corner growth model, both in the bulk setting and the increment-stationary setting. The main results are sharp right-tail bounds on the last-passage time and the exit point of the increment-stationary process. The arguments utilize calculations with the stationary version and a moment generating function identity due to E. Rains, for which we give a short probabilistic proof. As applications of the deviation bounds, we derive upper bounds on the speed of distributional convergence in the Busemann function and competition interface limits.
Let $X=\{X(t),t\in {\mathbb{R}}^N\}$ be a centered Gaussian random field with stationary increments and $X(0)=0$. For any compact rectangle $T\subset {\mathbb{R}}^N$ and $u\in {\mathbb{R}}$, denote by $A_u=\{t\in T:X(t)\geq u\}$ the excursion set. Under $X(\cdot)\in C^2({\mathbb{R}}^N)$ and certain regularity conditions, the mean Euler characteristic of $A_u$, denoted by ${\mathbb{E}}\{φ(A_u)\}$, is derived. By applying the Rice method, it is shown that, as $u\to\infty$, the excursion probability ${\mathbb{P}}\{\sup_{t\in T}X(t)\geq u\}$ can be approximated by ${\mathbb{E}}\{φ(A_u)\}$ such tha…
We develop importance sampling based efficient simulation techniques for three commonly encountered rare event probabilities associated with random walks having i.i.d. regularly varying increments; namely, 1) the large deviation probabilities, 2) the level crossing probabilities, and 3) the level crossing probabilities within a regenerative cycle. Exponential twisting based state-independent methods, which are effective in efficiently estimating these probabilities for light-tailed increments are not applicable when the increments are heavy-tailed. To address the latter case, more complex and …
We consider a class of self-similar, continuous Gaussian processes that do not necessarily have stationary increments. We prove a version of the Breuer-Major theorem for this class, that is, subject to conditions on the covariance function, a generic functional of the process increments converges in law to a Gaussian random variable. The proof is based on the Fourth Moment Theorem. We give examples of five non-stationary processes that satisfy these conditions.
With $X^*$ denoting a random variable with the $X$-size bias distribution, what are all distributions for $X$ such that it is possible to have $X^*=X+Y$, $Y\geq 0$, with $X$ and $Y$ {\em independent}? We give the answer, due to Steutel \cite{steutel}, and also discuss the relations of size biasing to the waiting time paradox, renewal theory, sampling, tightness and uniform integrability, compound Poisson distributions, infinite divisibility, and the lognormal distributions.
