We study the existence of the (thermodynamic) limit of the scaled cumulant-generating function L_n(z)=|W_n|^{-1}\logE\exp{z|Ξ\cap W_n|} of the empirical volume fraction |Ξ\cap W_n|/|W_n|, where |\cdot| denotes the d-dimensional Lebesgue measure. Here Ξ=\bigcup_{i\ge1}(Ξ_i+X_i) denotes a d-dimensional Poisson grain model (also known as a Boolean model) defined by a stationary Poisson process Π_λ=\sum_{i\ge1}δ_{X_i} with intensity λ>0 and a sequence of independent copies Ξ_1,Ξ_2,... of a random compact set Ξ_0. For an increasing family of compact convex sets {W_n, n\ge1} which expand unboundedly in all directions, we prove the existence and analyticity of the limit lim_{n\to\infty}L_n(z) on some disk in the complex plane whenever E\exp{a|Ξ_0|}<\infty for some a>0. Moreover, closely connected with this result, we obtain exponential inequalities and the exact asymptotics for the large deviation probabilities of the empirical volume fraction in the sense of Cramér and Chernoff.
We study the concentration of the norm of a random vector $Y$ uniformly sampled in the centered zero cell of two types of stationary and isotropic random mosaics in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for large dimensions $n$. For a stationary and isotropic Poisson-Voronoi mosaic, $Y$ has a radial and log-concave distribution, implying that ${|Y|}/{\mathbb{E}(|Y|^2)^{\frac{1}{2}}}$ approaches one for large $n$. Assuming the cell intensity of the random mosaic scales like $e^{n ρ_n}$, where $\lim_{n \to \infty} ρ_n = ρ$, $|Y|$ is on the order of $\sqrt{n}$ for large $n$. For the Poisson-Voronoi mosaic, we show that…
Let $[\mathcal{P}]$ be the points of a Poisson process on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and $F$ a probability distribution with support on the non-negative integers. Models are formulated for generating translation invariant random graphs with vertex set $[\mathcal{P}]$ and iid vertex degrees with distribution $F$, and the length of the edges is analyzed. The main result is that finite mean for the total edge length per vertex is possible if and only if $F$ has finite moment of order $(d+1)/d$.
The simple Lévy Poisson process and scaled forms are explicitly constructed from partial sums of independent and identically distributed random variables and from sums of non-stationary independent random variables. For the latter, the weak limits are scaled Poisson processes. The method proposed here prepares generalizations to dependent data, to associated data in the first place.
We construct a pair of related diffusions on a space of interval partitions of the unit interval $[0,1]$ that are stationary with the Poisson-Dirichlet laws with parameters (1/2,0) and (1/2,1/2) respectively. These are two particular cases of a general construction of such processes obtained by decorating the jumps of a spectrally positive Lévy process with independent squared Bessel excursions. The processes of ranked interval lengths of our partitions are members of a two parameter family of diffusions introduced by Ethier and Kurtz (1981) and Petrov (2009). The latter diffusions are continu…
Stationary stochastic processes with independent increments, of which the Poisson process is a prominent example, are widely used to describe real world events. With the basic assumption that a counting process is stationary and has independent increments, here I derive two integral equations to capture the time evolution of any such process. In order to solve these two integral equations explicitly, I need to introduce one more restriction condition. For sake of simplicity, I have imposed the Poisson condition on the two equations and successfully reproduced the renown Poisson results. The me…
In earlier stages in the introduction to asymptotic methods in probability theory, the weak convergence of sequences $(X_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of Binomial of random variables (\textit{rv}'s) to a Poisson law is classical and easy-to prove. A version of such a result concerning sequences $(Y_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of negative binomial \textit{rv}'s also exists. In both cases, $X_n$ and $Y_n-n$ are by-row sums $S_n[X]$ and $S_n[Y]$ of arrays of Bernoulli \textit{rv}'s and corrected geometric \textit{rv}'s respectively. When considered in the general frame of asymptotic theorems of by-row sums of \textit{rv}'s of…
We show that there is no cyclically monotone stationary matching of two independent Poisson processes in dimension $d=2$. The proof combines the harmonic approximation result from \cite{GHO} with local asymptotics for the two-dimensional matching problem for which we give a new self-contained proof using martingale arguments.
We investigate joint temporal and contemporaneous aggregation of N independent copies of strictly stationary INteger-valued AutoRegressive processes of order 1 (INAR(1)) with random coefficient $α\in(0,1)$ and with idiosyncratic Poisson innovations. Assuming that $α$ has a density function of the form $ψ(x) (1 - x)^β$, $x \in (0,1)$, with $β\in(-1,\infty)$ and $\lim_{x\uparrow 1} ψ(x) = ψ_1 \in (0,\infty)$, different limits of appropriately centered and scaled aggregated partial sums are shown to exist for $β\in(-1,0]$ in the so-called simultaneous case, i.e., when both $N$ and the time scale …
We introduce diffusions on a space of interval partitions of the unit interval that are stationary with the Poisson-Dirichlet laws with parameters $(α,0)$ and $(α,α)$. The construction has two steps. The first is a general construction of interval partition processes obtained previously, by decorating the jumps of a Lévy process with independent excursions. Here, we focus on the second step, which requires explicit transition kernels and what we call pseudo-stationarity. This allows us to study processes obtained from the original construction via scaling and time-change. In a sequel paper, we…
We give a pathwise construction of a two-parameter family of purely-atomic-measure-valued diffusions in which ranked masses of atoms are stationary with the Poisson-Dirichlet$(α,θ)$ distributions, for $α\in (0,1)$ and $θ\ge 0$. This resolves a conjecture of Feng and Sun (2010). We build on our previous work on $(α,0)$- and $(α,α)$-interval partition evolutions. Indeed, we first extract a self-similar superprocess from the levels of stable processes whose jumps are decorated with squared Bessel excursions and distinct allelic types. We complete our construction by time-change and normalisation …
We prove a formula for the speed of distance stationary random sequences. A particular case is the classical formula for the largest Lyapunov exponent of an i.i.d. product of two by two matrices in terms of a stationary measure on projective space. We apply this result to Poisson-Delaunay random walks on Riemannian symmetric spaces. In particular, we obtain sharp estimates for the asymptotic behavior of the speed of hyperbolic Poisson-Delaunay random walks when the intensity of the Poisson point process goes to zero. This allows us to prove that a dimension drop phenomena occurs for the harmon…
We derive mixing properties for a broad class of Poisson count time series satisfying a certain contraction condition. Using specific coupling techniques, we prove absolute regularity at a geometric rate not only for stationary Poisson-GARCH processes but also for models with an explosive trend. We provide easily verifiable sufficient conditions for absolute regularity for a variety of models including classical (log-)linear models. Finally, we illustrate the practical use of our results for hypothesis testing.
This paper studies the subgeometric convergence of the stationary distribution in taking the infinite-level limit of a finite-level M/G/1-type Markov chain, that is, in letting the upper boundary level go to infinity. This study is performed through the fundamental deviation matrix, which is a block-decomposition-friendly solution for the Poisson equation of the deviation matrix. The fundamental deviation matrix yields a difference formula for the respective stationary distributions of the finite-level chain and the corresponding infinite-level chain. The difference formula plays a crucial rol…
We study large communication networks of the mean-field type. The input flows to the nodes of the network are supposed to be stationary and with low rate. We show that such a network is ergodic, i.e. it goes to the stationary state, which does not depend on the initial state of the network. This is in contrast with the high load regime, when the large time behavior of the network might depend on its initial state. Our technique is based on the coupling construction, which couples two Non-Linear Markov Processes.
This paper introduces a new asymptotic regime for simplifying stochastic models having non-stationary effects, such as those that arise in the presence of time-of-day effects. This regime describes an operating environment within which the arrival process to a service system has an arrival intensity that is fluctuating rapidly. We show that such a service system is well approximated by the corresponding model in which the arrival process is Poisson with a constant arrival rate. In addition to the basic weak convergence theorem, we also establish a first order correction for the distribution of…
Let P := {X_i,i >= 1} be a stationary Poisson point process in R^d, {C_i,i >= 1} be a sequence of i.i.d. random sets in R^d, and {Y_i^t; t \geq 0, i >= 1} be i.i.d. {0,1}-valued continuous time stationary Markov chains. We define the Markov-Poisson-Boolean model C_t := {Y_i^t(X_i + C_i), i >= 1}. C_t represents the coverage process at time t. We first obtain limit laws for k-coverage of an area at an arbitrary instant. We then obtain the limit laws for the k-coverage seen by a particle as it moves along a one-dimensional path.
Main characteristics of stationary anisotropic Poisson processes of cylinders (dilated k-dimensional flats) in d-dimensional Euclidean space are studied. Explicit formulae for the capacity functional, the covariance function, the contact distribution function, the volume fraction, and the intensity of the surface area measure are given which can be used directly in applications.
Consider the max-stable process $η(t) = \max_{i\in\mathbb N} U_i \rm{e}^{\langle X_i, t\rangle - κ(t)}$, $t\in\mathbb{R}^d$, where $\{U_i, i\in\mathbb{N}\}$ are points of the Poisson process with intensity $u^{-2}\rm{d} u$ on $(0,\infty)$, $X_i$, $i\in\mathbb{N}$, are independent copies of a random $d$-variate vector $X$ (that are independent of the Poisson process), and $κ: \mathbb{R}^d \to \mathbb{R}$ is a function. We show that the process $η$ is stationary if and only if $X$ has multivariate normal distribution and $κ(t)-κ(0)$ is the cumulant generating function of $X$. In this case, $η$ i…
We observe stationary random tessellations $X=\{Ξ_n\}_{n\ge1}$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ through a convex sampling window $W$ that expands unboundedly and we determine the total $(k-1)$-volume of those $(k-1)$-dimensional manifold processes which are induced on the $k$-facets of $X$ ($1\le k\le d-1$) by their intersections with the $(d-1)$-facets of independent and identically distributed motion-invariant tessellations $X_n$ generated within each cell $Ξ_n$ of $X$. The cases of $X$ being either a Poisson hyperplane tessellation or a random tessellation with weak dependences are treated separately. In …
Motivated by applications that involve setting proper staffing levels for multi-server queueing systems with batch arrivals, we present a thorough study of the queue-length process $\{Q(t); t \geq 0\}$, departure process $\{D(t); t \geq 0\}$, and the workload process $\{W(t); t \geq 0\}$ associated with the M$_{t}^{B_{t}}$/G$_{t}$/$\infty$ queueing system. With two fundamental assumptions of (non-stationary) Poisson arrivals and infinitely many servers, we otherwise maintain a highly general model, in which the service duration and batch size distributions may depend on time and, moreover, whe…
The intrinsic volumes induced by a stationary Poisson k-flat process inside a compact and convex sampling window are considered. Using techniques from stochastic analysis, more precisely calculus with multiple stochastic integrals and a Wiener-Ito chaos expansion of Poisson functionals, all moments and cumulants, exact and asymptotic, are calculated in terms of a family of integral-geometric functionals. Moreover, univariate central limit theorems as well as Berry-Esseen-type inequalities are shown and a multidimensional limit theorem is concluded.
Given a stationary and isotropic Poisson hyperplane process and a convex body $K$ in ${\mathbb R}^d$, we consider the random polytope defined by the intersection of all closed halfspaces containing $K$ that are bounded by hyperplanes of the process not intersecting $K$. We investigate how well the expected mean width of this random polytope approximates the mean width of $K$ if the intensity of the hyperplane process tends to infinity.
We show that random walk on a stationary random graph with positive anchored expansion and exponential volume growth has positive speed. We also show that two families of random triangulations of the hyperbolic plane, the hyperbolic Poisson Voronoi tessellation and the hyperbolic Poisson Delaunay triangulation, have 1-skeletons with positive anchored expansion. As a consequence, we show that the simple random walks on these graphs have positive speed. We include a section of open problems and conjectures on the topics of stationary geometric random graphs and the hyperbolic Poisson Voronoi tes…
We consider a stationary Poisson hyperplane process with given directional distribution and intensity in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. Generalizing the zero cell of such a process, we fix a convex body $K$ and consider the intersection of all closed halfspaces bounded by hyperplanes of the process and containing $K$. We study how well these random polytopes approximate $K$ (measured by the Hausdorff distance) if the intensity increases, and how this approximation depends on the directional distribution in relation to properties of $K$.
Stationary Poisson processes of lines in the plane are studied whose directional distributions are concentrated on $k \ge 3$ equally spread directions. The random lines of such processes decompose the plane into a collection of random polygons, which form a so-called Poisson line tessellation. The focus of this paper is to determine the proportion of triangles in such tessellations, or equivalently, the probability that the typical cell is a triangle. As a by-product, a new deviation of Miles' classical result for the isotropic case is obtained by an approximation argument.
We study a parametric class of isotropic but not necessarily stationary Poisson hyperplane tessellations in n-dimensional Euclidean space. Our focus is on the volume of the zero cell, i.e. the cell containing the origin. As a main result, we obtain an explicit formula for the variance of the volume of the zero cell in arbitrary dimensions. From this formula we deduce the asymptotic behaviour of the volume of the zero cell as the dimension goes to infinity.
The Gärtner-Ellis condition for the square of an asymptotically stationary Gaussian process is established. The same limit holds for the conditional distri-bution given any fixed initial point, which entails weak multiplicative ergodicity. The limit is shown to be the Laplace transform of a convolution of Gamma distributions with Poisson compound of exponentials. A proof based on Wiener-Hopf factorization induces a probabilistic interpretation of the limit in terms of a regression problem.
We consider a planar Poisson process and its associated Voronoi map. We show that there is a proper coloring with 6 colors of the map which is a deterministic isometry-equivariant function of the Poisson process. As part of the proof we show that the 6-core of the corresponding Delaunay triangulation is empty. Generalizations, extensions and some open questions are discussed.
This paper deals with Poisson processes on an arbitrary measurable space. Using a direct approach, we derive formulae for moments and cumulants of a vector of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals with respect to the compensated Poisson process. Second, a multivariate central limit theorem is shown for a vector whose components admit a finite chaos expansion of the type of a Poisson U-statistic. The approach is based on recent results of Peccati et al.\ combining Malliavin calculus and Stein's method, and also yields Berry-Esseen type bounds. As applications, moment formulae and central limit theorems…
Let $\mathfrak{m}$ be a random tessellation in $\mathbf{R}^d$ observed in a bounded Borel subset $W$ and $f(\cdot)$ be a measurable function defined on the set of convex bodies. To each cell $C$ of $\mathfrak{m}$ we associate a point $z(C)$ which is the nucleus of $C$. Applying $f(\cdot)$ to all the cells of $\mathfrak{m}$, we investigate the order statistics of $f(C)$ over all cells $C\in\mathfrak{m}$ with nucleus in $\mathbf{W}_ρ=ρ^{1/d}W$ when $ρ$ goes to infinity. Under a strong mixing property and a local condition on $\mathfrak{m}$ and $f(\cdot)$, we show a general theorem which reduces …
We are concerned with scaling limits of the solutions to stochastic differential equations with stationary coefficients driven by Poisson random measures and Brownian motions. We state an annealed convergence theorem, in which the limit exhibits a diffusive or superdiffusive behavior, depending on the integrability properties of the Poisson random measure
We study measures on random partitions, arising from condensing stochastic particle systems with stationary product distributions. We provide fairly general conditions on the stationary weights, which lead to Poisson-Dirichlet statistics of the condensed phase in the thermodynamic limit. The Poisson-Dirichlet distribution is known to be the unique reversible measure of split-merge dynamics for random partitions, which we use to characterize the limit law. We also establish concentration results for the macroscopic phase, using size-biased sampling techniques and the equivalence of ensembles to…
We show that a large class of stationary continuous-time regenerative processes are finitarily isomorphic to one another. The key is showing that any stationary renewal point process whose jump distribution is absolutely continuous with exponential tails is finitarily isomorphic to a Poisson point process. We further give simple necessary and sufficient conditions for a renewal point process to be finitarily isomorphic to a Poisson point process. This improves results and answers several questions of Soo and of Kosloff and Soo.
We consider Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm applied to a random input and study the growth of the bottom rows of the corresponding Young diagrams. We prove multidimensional Poisson limit theorem for the resulting Plancherel growth process. In this way we extend the result of Aldous and Diaconis to more than just one row. This result can be interpreted as convergence of the multi-line Hammersley process to its stationary distribution which is given by a collection of independent Poisson point processes.
We study a stable partial matching $τ$ of the (possibly randomized) $d$-dimensional lattice with a stationary determinantal point process $Ψ$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with intensity $α>1$. For instance, $Ψ$ might be a Poisson process. The matched points from $Ψ$ form a stationary and ergodic (under lattice shifts) point process $Ψ^τ$ with intensity $1$ that very much resembles $Ψ$ for $α$ close to $1$. On the other hand $Ψ^τ$ is hyperuniform and number rigid, quite in contrast to a Poisson process. We deduce these properties by proving more general results for a stationary point process $Ψ$, whose so…
The paper considers the stationary Poisson Boolean model with spherical grains and proposes a family of nonparametric estimators for the radius distribution. These estimators are based on observed distances and radii, weighted in an appropriate way. They are ratio-unbiased and asymptotically consistent for growing observation window. It is shown that the asymptotic variance exists and is given by a fairly explicit integral expression. Asymptotic normality is established under a suitable integrability assumption on the weight function. The paper also provides a short discussion of related estim…
