We introduce two new binary operations with combinatorial species; the arithmetic product and the modified arithmetic product. The arithmetic product gives combinatorial meaning to the product of Dirichlet series and to the Lambert series in the context of species. It allows us to introduce the notion of multiplicative species, a lifting to the combinatorial level of the classical notion of multiplicative arithmetic function. Interesting combinatorial constructions are introduced; cloned assemblies of structures, hyper-cloned trees, enriched rectangles, etc. Recent research of Cameron, Gewurz and Merola, about the product action in the context of oligomorphic groups, motivated the introduction of the modified arithmetic product. By using the modified arithmetic product we obtain new enumerative results. We also generalize and simplify some recent results of Canfield, and Pittel, related to the enumerations of tuples of partitions with restricted meet.
In this note we generalize the convolution formula for the Tutte polynomial of Kook-Reiner-Stanton and Etienne-Las Vergnas to a more general setting that includes both arithmetic matroids and delta-matroids. As corollaries, we obtain new proofs of two positivity results for pseudo-arithmetic matroids and a combinatorial interpretation of the arithmetic Tutte polynomial at infinitely many points in terms of arithmetic flows and colorings. We also exhibit connections with a decomposition of Dahmen-Micchelli spaces and lattice point counting in zonotopes.
Let $d_S$ denote the arithmetic density of a subset $S \subseteq \mathbb N$. We derive a power series in $q\in \mathbb C$, $|q|<1$, with coëfficients related to integer partitions and integer compositions, that yields $1/d_S$ in the limit as $q\to 1$ radially.
A split graph is a graph whose vertices can be partitioned into a clique and a stable set. We investigate the combinatorial species of split graphs, providing species-theoretic generalizations of enumerative results due to Bína and Přibil (2015), Cheng, Collins, and Trenk (2016), and Collins and Trenk (2018). In both the labeled and unlabeled cases, we give asymptotic results on the number of split graphs, of unbalanced split graphs, and of bicolored graphs, including proving the conjecture of Cheng, Collins, and Trenk (2016) that almost all split graphs are balanced.
We prove a multivariate Lagrange-Good formula for functionals of uncountably many variables and investigate its relation with inversion formulas using trees. We clarify the cancellations that take place between the two aforementioned formulas and draw connections with similar approaches in a range of applications.
We give a purely combinatorial proof for a two-fold generalization of van der Waerden-Brauer's theorem and Hindman's theorem. We also give tower bounds for a finite version of it.
We study a two-species PASEP, in which there are two types of particles, "heavy" and "light," hopping right and left on a one-dimensional lattice of $n$ cells with open boundaries. In this process, only the "heavy" particles can enter on the left of the lattice and exit from the right of the lattice. In the bulk, any transition where a heavier particle type swaps places with an adjacent lighter particle type is possible. We generalize combinatorial results of Corteel and Williams for the ordinary PASEP by defining a combinatorial object which we call a rhombic alternative tableau that gives a …
We introduce integral structure types as a categorical analogue of virtual combinatorial species. Integral structure types then categorify power series with possibly negative coefficients in the same way that combinatorial species categorify power series with non-negative rational coefficients. The notion of an operator on combinatorial species naturally extends to integral structure types, and in light of their `negativity' we define the notion of the commutator of two operators on integral structure types. We then extend integral structure types to the setting of stuff types as introduced by…
We investigate arithmetic, geometric and combinatorial properties of symmetric edge polytopes. We give a complete combinatorial description of their facets. By combining Gröbner basis techniques, half-open decompositions and methods for interlacing polynomials we provide an explicit formula for the $h^\ast$-polynomial in case of complete bipartite graphs. In particular, we show that the $h^\ast$-polynomial is $γ$-positive and real-rooted. This proves Gal's conjecture for arbitrary flag unimodular triangulations in this case, and, beyond that, we prove a strengthing due to Nevo and Petersen (20…
Arithmetic functions in Number Theory meet the Sprague-Grundy function from Combinatorial Game Theory. We study a variety of 2-player games induced by standard arithmetic functions, such as Euclidian division, divisors, remainders and relatively prime numbers, and their negations.
Generalizing the famous Bernstein-Kushnirenko Theorem, Khovanskii proved in 1978 a combinatorial formula for the arithmetic genus of the compactification of a generic complete intersection associated to a family of lattice polytopes. Recently, an analogous combinatorial formula, called the discrete mixed volume, was introduced by Bihan and shown to be nonnegative. By making a footnote of Khovanskii in his paper explicit, we interpret this invariant as the (motivic) arithmetic genus of the non-compact generic complete intersection associated to the family of lattice polytopes.

Construction of phylogenetic trees and networks for extant species from their characters represents one of the key problems in phylogenomics. While solution to this problem is not always uniquely defined and there exist multiple methods for tree/network construction, it becomes important to measure how well the constructed networks capture the given character relationship across the species. In the current study, we propose a novel method for measuring the specificity of a given phylogenetic network in terms of the total number of distributions of character states at the leaves that the networ…
Quite recently, the first author investigated vanishing coefficients of the arithmetic progressions in several $q$-series expansions. In this paper, we further study the signs of coefficients in two $q$-series expansions and establish some arithmetic relations for several $q$-series expansions by means of Ramanujan's theta functions. We obtain the 5-dissections of these two $q$-series and give combinatorial interpretations for these dissections. Moreover, we obtain four $q$-series identities involving the aforementioned $q$-series, two of which were proved by Kim and Toh via modular forms.
We prove results describing the structure of a Chow ring associated to a product of graphs, which arises from the Gross-Schoen desingularization of a product of regular proper semi-stable curves over discrete valuation rings. By the works of Johannes Kolb and Shou-Wu Zhang, this ring controls the behavior of the non-Archimedean height pairing on products of smooth proper curves over non-Archimedean fields. We provide a complete description of the degree map, and prove vanishing results affirming a conjecture of Kolb, which, combined with his work, leads to an analytic formula for the arithmeti…
