We study the problem of best approximations of a vector $α\in{\mathbb R}^n$ by rational vectors of a lattice $Λ\subset {\mathbb R}^n$ whose common denominator is bounded. To this end we introduce successive minima for a periodic lattice structure and extend some classical results from geometry of numbers to this structure. This leads to bounds for the best approximation problem which generalize and improve former results.
This paper provides a formula for the minimal relations and the Frobenius number of a numerical semigroup minimally generated by three pairwise coprime positive integers.
Gallagher's theorem is a sharpening and extension of the Littlewood conjecture that holds for almost all tuples of real numbers. We provide a fibre refinement, solving a problem posed by Beresnevich, Haynes and Velani in 2015. Hitherto, this was only known on the plane, as previous approaches relied heavily on the theory of continued fractions. Using reduced successive minima in lieu of continued fractions, we develop the structural theory of Bohr sets of arbitrary rank, in the context of diophantine approximation. In addition, we generalise the theory and result to the inhomogeneous setting. …
We study a variant of a problem considered by Dinaburg and Sinai on the statistics of the minimal solution to a linear Diophantine equation. We show that the signed ratio between the Euclidean norms of the minimal solution and the coefficient vector is uniformly distributed modulo one. We reduce the problem to an equidistribution theorem of Anton Good concerning the orbits of a point in the upper half-plane under the action of a Fuchsian group.
The Hurwitz chain gives a sequence of pairs of Farey approximations to an irrational real number. Minkowski gave a criterion for a number to be algebraic by using a certain generalization of the Hurwitz chain. We apply Minkowski's generalization (the Minkowski chain) to give criteria for a real linear form to be either badly approximable or singular. We also give a variant of Dirichlet's approximation theorem for a real linear form that produces a whole basis of approximating integral vectors rather than a single one. This result holds if and only if the form is badly approximable. The proofs …
We show that Mahler's classification of real numbers $ζ$ with respect to the growth of the sequence $(w_{n}(ζ))_{n\geq 1}$ is equivalently induced by certain natural assumptions on the decay of the sequence $(λ_{n}(ζ))_{n\geq 1}$ concerning simultaneous rational approximation. Thereby we obtain a much clearer picture on simultaneous approximation to successive powers of a real number in general. Another variant of the Mahler classification concerning uniform approximation by algebraic numbers is shown as well. Our method has several applications to classic exponents of Diophantine approximatio…
We generalize the construction of Roy's Fibonacci type numbers to the case of a Sturmian recurrence and we determine the classical exponents of approximation $ω_2(ξ)$, $\widehatω_2(ξ)$, $λ_2(ξ)$, $\widehatλ_2(ξ)$ associated with these real numbers. This also extends similar results established by Bugeaud and Laurent in the case of Sturmian continued fractions. More generally we provide an almost complete description of the combined graph of parametric successive minima functions defined by Schmidt and Summerer in dimension two for such Sturmian type numbers. As a side result we obtain new info…
Recently, W. M. Schmidt and L. Summerer introduced a new theory which allowed them to recover the main known inequalities relating the usual exponents of Diophantine approximation to a point in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and to discover new ones. They first note that these exponents can be computed in terms of the successive minima of a parametric family of convex bodies attached to the given point. Then they prove that the $n$-tuple of these successive minima can in turn be approximated up to bounded difference by a function from a certain class. In this paper, we show that the same is true within a sma…
In this article, we study the relation between lattice basis and successive minima and give an estimate for the measure-theoretical distribution of successive minima. As consequences, we also discuss some logarithm laws associated to higher sucessive minima.
In a series of recent papers, W. M. Schmidt and L. Summerer developed a new theory by which they recover all major generic inequalities relating exponents of Diophantine approximation to a point in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and find new ones. Given a point in $\mathbb{R}^n$, they first show how most of its exponents of Diophantine approximation can be computed in terms of the successive minima of a parametric family of convex bodies attached to that point. Then they prove that these successive minima can in turn be approximated by a certain class of functions which they call $(n,γ)$-systems. In this way…
Let $K$ and $K'$ be arithmetically equivalent number fields, both of degree $d$. We prove that $K$ and $K'$ have the same successive minima, up to a constant depending only on $d$. We give examples showing that one cannot expect equality.
The main result of this paper is an inequality relating the lattice point enumerator of a 3-dimensional, 0-symmetric convex body and its successive minima. This is an example of generalization of Minkowski's theorems on successive minima, where the volume is replaced by the discrete analogue, the lattice point enumerator. This problem is still open in higher dimensions, however, we introduce a stronger conjecture that shows a possibility of proof by induction on the dimension.
We prove two generalizations of Furstenberg's Diophantine result regarding density of an orbit of an irrational point in the one-torus under the action of multiplication by a non-lacunary multiplicative semi-group of $\mathbb{N}$. We show that for any sequences $\{a_{n} \},\{b_{n} \}\subset\mathbb{Z}$ for which the quotients of successive elements tend to $1$ as $n$ goes to infinity, and any infinite sequence $\{c_{n} \}$, the set $\{a_{n}b_{m}c_{k}x : n,m,k\in\mathbb{N} \}$ is dense modulo $1$ for every irrational $x$. Moreover, by ergodic-theoretical methods, we prove that if $\{a_{n} \},\{b…
We generalise M. M. Skriganov's notion of weak admissibility for lattices to include standard lattices occurring in Diophantine approximation and algebraic number theory, and we prove estimates for the number of lattice points in sets such as aligned boxes. Our result improves on Skriganov's celebrated counting result if the box is sufficiently distorted, the lattice is not admissible, and, e.g., symplectic or orthogonal. We establish a criterion under which our error term is sharp, and we provide examples in dimensions $2$ and $3$ using continued fractions. We also establish a similar countin…
Consider the vanishing locus of a real analytic function on $\mathbb{R}^n$ restricted to $[0,1]^n$. We bound the number of rational points of bounded height that approximate this set very well. Our result is formulated and proved in the context of o-minimal structure which give a general framework to work with sets mentioned above. It complements the theorem of Pila-Wilkie that yields a bound of the same quality for the number of rational points of bounded height that lie on a definable set. We focus our attention on polynomially bounded o-minimal structures, allow algebraic points of bounded …
We establish a new connection between metric Diophantine approximation and the parametric geometry of numbers by proving a variational principle facilitating the computation of the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of many sets of interest in Diophantine approximation. In particular, we show that the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the set of singular $m\times n$ matrices are both equal to $mn \big(1-\frac1{m+n}\big)$, thus proving a conjecture of Kadyrov, Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss, and Margulis (preprint 2014) as well as answering a question of Bugeaud, Cheung, and Chevallier (preprint 2016…
Let $B$ be a Borel set in $\mathbb E^{d}$ with volume $V(B)=\infty$. It is shown that almost all lattices $L$ in $\mathbb E^{d}$ contain infinitely many pairwise disjoint $d$-tuples, that is sets of $d$ linearly independent points in $B$. A consequence of this result is the following: let $S$ be a star body in $\mathbb E^{d}$ with $V(S)=\infty$. Then for almost all lattices $L$ in $\mathbb E^{d}$ the successive minima $λ_{1}(S,L),..., λ_{d}(S,L)$ of $S$ with respect to $L$ are 0. A corresponding result holds for most lattices in the Baire category sense. A tool for the latter result is the sem…
We establish new inequalities involving classical exponents of Diophantine approximation. This allows for improving on the work of Davenport, Schmidt and Laurent concerning the maximum value of the exponent $\hatλ_{n}(ζ)$ among all real transcendental $ζ$. In particular we refine the estimation $\hatλ_{n}(ζ)\leq \lceil n/2\rceil^{-1}$ due to M. Laurent by $\hatλ_{n}(ζ)\leq \hat{w}_{\lceil n/2\rceil}(ζ)^{-1}$ for all $n\geq 1$, and for even $n$ we replace the bound $2/n$ for $\hatλ_{n}(ζ)$ first found by Davenport and Schmidt by roughly $\frac{2}{n}-\frac{1}{2n^{3}}$, which provides the current…
Binary quadratic Diophantine equations are of interest from the viewpoint of computational complexity theory. They contain as special cases many examples of natural problems apparantly occupying intermediate stages in the P-NP hierarchy, i.e. problems neither known to be polynomial time or NP-complete. Let L(F) denote the length of the binary encoding of the coefficients of a binary quadratic diophantine equation F(x_1, x_2)=0. This paper shows there is a certificate of length polynomial in L(F) that such an equation has an integer solution (resp. positive integer solution) when one exists. Th…
Our aim is to find a complex continued fraction algorithm finding all the best Diophantine approximations to a complex number. Using the sequence of minimal vectors in a two dimensional lattice over Gaussian integers, we obtain an algorithm defined on a submanifold of the space of unimodular two dimensional Gauss lattices. This submanifold is transverse to the diagonal flow. Thanks to the correspondence between minimal vectors and best Diophantine approximations, the algorithm finds all the best approximations to a complex number. A byproduct of the algorithm is the best constant for the compl…
Given a toric metrized R-divisor on a toric variety over a global field, we give a formula for the essential minimum of the associated height function. Under suitable positivity conditions, we also give formulae for all the successive minima. We apply these results to the study, in the toric setting, of the relation between the successive minima and other arithmetic invariants like the height and the arithmetic volume. We also apply our formulae to compute the successive minima for several families of examples, including weighted projective spaces, toric bundles and translates of subtori.
Within the study of parametric geometry of numbers W. Schmidt and L. Summerer introduced so-called regular graphs. Roughly speaking the successive minima functions for the classical simultaneous Diophantine approximation problem have a very special pattern if the vector $\underlineζ$ induces a regular graph. The regular graph is in particular of interest due to a conjecture by Schmidt and Summer concerning classic approximation constants. This paper aims to provide several new results on the behavior of the successive minima functions for the regular graph. Moreover, we improve the best known …
Given an arithmetic surface and a positive hermitian line bundle over it, we bound the successive minima of the lattice of global sections of this line bundle. Our method combines a result of C.Voisin on secant varieties of projective curves with previous work by the author on the arithmetic analog of the Kodaira vanishing theorem. The paper also includes a result of A.Granville on the divisibility properties of binomial coefficients in a given line of Pascal's triangle.
In this article we introduce the notion of badly approximable matrices of higher order using higher sucessive minima in $\mathbb R^d$. We prove that for order less than $d$, they have Lebesgue measure zero and the gaps between them still have full Hausdorff dimension.
In this paper we consider the problem of counting algebraic numbers $α$ of fixed degree $n$ and bounded height $Q$ such that the derivative of the minimal polynomial $P_α(x)$ of $α$ is bounded, $|P_α'(α)| < Q^{1-v}$. This problem has many applications to the problems of the metric theory of Diophantine approximation. We prove that the number of $α$ defined above on the interval $\left(-\frac12, \frac12\right)$ doesn't exceed $c_1(n)Q^{n+1-\frac{1}{7}v}$ for $Q>Q_0(n)$ and $1.4 \le v \le \frac{7}{16}(n+1)$. Our result is based on an improvement to the lemma on the order of zero approximation by…
We compute the successive minima of the projective toric variety $X_\cA$ associated to a finite set $ \cA \subset \Z^n$. As a consequence of this computation and of the results of S.-W. Zhang on the distribution of small points, we derive estimates for the height of the subvariety $X_\cA$ and of the $\cA$-resultant. These estimates allow us to obtain an arithmetic analogue of the Bezout-Kushnirenko's theorem concerning the number of solutions of a system of polynomial equations. As an application of this result, we improve the known estimates for the height of the polynomials in the sparse Nul…
Let $X$ be a normal and geometrically integral projective variety over a global field $K$ and let $\overline{D}$ be an adelic Cartier divisor on $X$. We prove a conjecture of Chen, showing that the essential minimum $ζ_{\mathrm{ess}}(\overline{D})$ of $\overline{D}$ equals its asymptotic maximal slope under mild positivity assumptions. As an application, we see that $ζ_{\mathrm{ess}}(\overline{D})$ can be read on the Okounkov body of the underlying divisor $D$ via the Boucksom--Chen concave transform. This gives a new interpretation of Zhang's inequalities on successive minima and a criterion …
This text is devoted to simultaneous approximation to $ξ$ and $ξ^2$ by rational numbers with the same denominator, where $ξ$ is a non-quadratic real number. We focus on an exponent $β_0(ξ)$ that measures the quality of such approximations (when they are exceptionally good). We prove that $β_0$ takes the same set of values as a combinatorial quantity that measures the abundance of palindrome prefixes in an infinite word $w$. This allows us to give a precise exposition of Roy's palindrome prefix method. The main tools we use are Davenport-Schmidt's sequence of minimal points and Roy's bracket op…
Lattices defined as modules over algebraic rings or orders have garnered interest recently, particularly in the fields of cryptography and coding theory. Whilst there exist many attempts to generalise the conditions for LLL reduction to such lattices, there do not seem to be any attempts so far to generalise stronger notions of reduction such as Minkowski, HKZ and BKZ reduction. Moreover, most lattice reduction methods for modules over algebraic rings involve applying traditional techniques to the embedding of the module into real space, which distorts the structure of the algebra. In this pap…
Let $λ_k$ denote the $k$-th successive minimum of a lattice $L$. We study properties of the lengths of certain bases of $L$. If $v_1, \dots v_n$ is a basis which is reduced in the sense of Minkowski we show that $\lvert v_k \rvert^2 \leq \frac{k}{4} λ_{k}^2$ for $k = 6, 7$, confirming a conjecture of Schürmann, and obtaining the first improvement of a classical bound by Van der Waerden. We construct a sequences of lattices where $\lvert v_n \rvert$ is significantly longer than the longest vector in a Korkin-Zolotarev reduced basis, answering a question of Schürmann. In an appendix joint with L…
Let $L$ be a full-rank lattice in $\mathbb R^d$ and write $L^+$ for the semigroup of all vectors with nonnegative coordinates in $L$. We call a basis $X$ for $L$ positive if it is contained in $L^+$. There are infinitely many such bases, and each of them spans a conical semigroup $S(X)$ consisting of all nonnegative integer linear combinations of the vectors of $X$. Such $S(X)$ is a sub-semigroup of $L^+$, and we investigate the distribution of the gaps of $S(X)$ in $L^+$, i.e. the points in $L^+ \setminus S(X)$. We describe some basic properties and counting estimates for these gaps. Our main…
Slopes of an adelic vector bundle exhibit a behaviour akin to successive minima. Comparisons between the two amount to a Siegel lemma. Here we use Zhang's version for absolute minima over the algebraic numbers. We prove a Minkowski-Hlawka theorem in this context. We also study the tensor product of two hermitian bundles bounding both its absolute minimum and maximal slope, thus improving an estimate of Chen. We further include similar inequalities for exterior and symmetric powers, in terms of some lcm of multinomial coefficients.
Minkowski's second theorem on successive minima asserts that the volume of a 0-symmetric convex body K over the covolume of a lattice Λcan be bounded above by a quantity involving all the successive minima of K with respect to Λ. We will prove here that the number of lattice points inside K can also accept an upper bound of roughly the same size, in the special case where K is an ellipsoid. Whether this is also true for all K unconditionally is an open problem, but there is reasonable hope that the inductive approach used for ellipsoids could be extended to all cases.
In this short note we give incremental algorithms for the following lattice problems: finding a basis of a lattice, computing the successive minima, and determining the orthogonal decomposition. We prove an upper bound for the number of update steps for every insertion order. For the determination of the orthogonal decomposition we efficiently implement an argument due to Kneser.
We give a precise estimate for the number of lattice points in certain bounded subsets of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ that involve `hyperbolic spikes' and occur naturally in multiplicative Diophantine approximation. We use Wilkie's o-minimal structure $\mathbb{R}_{\exp}$ and expansions thereof to formulate our counting result in a general setting. We give two different applications of our counting result. The first one establishes nearly sharp upper bounds for sums of reciprocals of fractional parts, and thereby sheds light on a question raised by Lê and Vaaler, extending previous work of Widmer and of t…
Let $L$ be a lattice of full rank in $n$-dimensional real space. A vector in $L$ is called $i$-sparse if it has no more than $i$ nonzero coordinates. We define the $i$-th successive sparsity level of $L$, $s_i(L)$, to be the minimal $s$ so that $L$ has $s$ linearly independent $i$-sparse vectors, then $s_i(L) \leq n$ for each $1 \leq i \leq n$. We investigate sufficient conditions for $s_i(L)$ to be smaller than $n$ and obtain explicit bounds on the sup-norms of the corresponding linearly independent sparse vectors in~$L$. This result can be viewed as a partial sparse analogue of Minkowski's s…
